We ordered two for the table and I ordered another to go! Still tasted good at home. Bun bo hue was packed with flavor and comes with blood and pig knuckles. We go to Bale in Dorchester for the best Banh Mi's in all of Boston every year around this time. We decided to dine in for lunch prior to getting our sandwiches and this place has good reviews and their social media page looked appealing. Parking is tough in this part of Dorchester, but not impossible. Be careful as there are many sketchy people here, lock your car doors, keep valuables out of sight. The place looked clean and sizeable inside. The waitresses were all pretty friendly and made a point to explain which veggie dishes went with which order. They also had digital checkout experiences options upon paying for your order. The food here is good. The bun bo hue was tasty. Broth was garlicky and full of flavor. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the meat portions were adequate. There was a piece of pig blood (tastes like nothing to me) which I've not had in this dish from other places before. There was a cut of pig feet/knuckles which was interesting (tasted bland - had to dip in sauce). Overall, it was a 8/10 rating for me. The other dishes looked tasty and the family didn't complain about them. Pricing is about what you'd expect. The noodle dishes were between $16-$18, so a family of 4 can dine in and spend around $90 including tip, unless you get drinks and apps etc. What you need to know: This place specializes in noodle soups. If you're looking for the typical pork chop rice plate or dry vermicelli noodles dish, you won't find it here! I was disappointed to figure this out at the place. The food is still delicious, but if you are bringing a crowd that may need some variety, you may want to reconsider. We had the bahn it , which are the steamed sticky rice dumplings, and the banh mi bo kho, which is a beef stew with banh mi bread. I loved the steamed sticky rice dumplings. They were chewy and the pork and shrimp filling inside complemented the chewy texture. Their homemade fish sauce was sweet and salty and paired well with the dumplings. I was a fan. The bo kho was also aromatic, but was missing the star anise-y flavor I typically expect from a bo kho. There was an ample amount of meat that was both tender and juicy. These were the off cuts, but they tasted premium. I also liked the pieces of tendon. The bread went perfectly with the broth. It was crunchy and soaked in that tasty broth. The short rib Bun Bo Hue was very good, the Pho was OK (kind of expensive) and the rice roll appetizer was fine but had a big issue. I'm giving a relatively high review because *my* dish was really good (the BBH). I came with ~6 people, so got to try some more dishes than just my own. First, we had the rice roll appetizer - it was fine - I wish there were a few more of each of the items next to the rolls since we were sharing, but that's our fault for not ordering more. However, there was a big issue - the spam-ish pink meat *still had the plastic wrap on it*! We weren't sure if it was an edible rice paper or something at first, but it was definitely just plastic wrap, and at least one of our party ate the plastic before we realized. I ordered the short rib BBH and they were able to make it less spicy (I am weak), and this dish was delicious. No complaints about it - the meat was tender, the noodles were great, and the soup was very flavorful. They gave plenty of bean sprouts and herbs, and overall it was great. A friend recommended Gao after we ran around M Street Beach and Castle Island and it was an elite post-run lunch. I wish I had multiple stomach so I could try more items but there's always next time. Our server took our order within a few minutes after we sat down and I got banh cuon and bun bo bap & cha cua, with a iced limenaid to wash it all down. I took a sip of the limenaid and it was incredibly refreshing- I knew instantly that I've never had a better limenaid. This made me even more excited for the food to come and first up was the banh cuon which had mushrooms and pork inside and came with ham, herbs and a spring roll. The texture of the rice roll was perfect, it was thin but held together when picked up and the ingredients tasted very fresh and vibrant. I would've been very happy with just that but shortly after the bowl noodle soup came over. The steaming bowl of noodle soup took over my all my senses and I was quickly engulfed by the beefy aroma. It came with seafood meatballs, miscellaneous pieces of beef and a combination of herbs and noodles. The broth was beefy but not heavy at all, balanced out by herbs and a hint of seafood. I am so happy I found this place - it's now one of my favorite spots in Dorchester! Now, I've only been once and can only speak to one dish, but it was AMAZING. I know this is more of a noodle soup place, but I ordered the Bánh cuốn (rice rolls) as a meal and it was unforgettable. The Bánh cuốn is on the appetizer menu and it's $12.99. When I ordered it, they asked if I wanted 3 or 4 and I chose 3, so I'm not sure if there is a higher price for 4 or what it is, but 3 was plenty filling. These are made fresh and in house and the rice rolls are so soft and silky. The rice rolls are filled with pork and mushroom, and they come topped with crispy shallots and sides of Vietnamese ham, Vietnamese fermented pork, a crispy spring roll, and veggies (bean sprouts, cucumber, and herbs). All of that for $12.99 is an amazing find especially with todays prices. It also comes with a side of fish sauce - I chose the less spicy often, and it was tangy, sweet, and a perfect accompaniment to the food. And while it looks so pretty, I added all of the sauce, mixed it up, and had it like a mixed rice roll salad. There was plenty of filling, the meats were a nice hit of extra protein, and the spring roll was so delicious and crispy. We ordered a Nam Vang Hu Tieu and a Bun Mam. After ~20 mins, we still hadn't received any water, so we requested for some. They forgot about the waters until we followed up with them after seeing a table behind us promptly get theirs. After another ~20 mins, we finally got some food--first the Nam Vang, and then a Bo Kho Hu Tiu. We notified them that we ordered a Bun Mam and not a Bo Kho, and they say they could switch the Bo Kho for a Bun Mam. However, at this point, we were ravenous and impatient. We decided to keep the Bo Kho and continue to wait for our actual order of Bun Mam. As a result of this whole fiasco, we asked if any discount could be given. They initially said no, to which we then requested for other compensation. They ended up bringing out our receipt that stated a $5 discount on our order. Upon closer inspection though, the receipt also noted a Guava Jasmine Tea. An item which we didn't order, another mishap... . After they corrected it, we were finally able to enjoy our meal. It has a smaller menu focused on specific dishes and doing them well versus the standard menu of rice plate, pho, vermicelli, and a handful of specials that are just fine. We were recently recommended to try this Vietnamese restaurant that recently opened on Dot Ave. You know it's the real deal when the entire restaurant consists only of Vietnamese-speaking families. This spot has a fairly limited menu with items I do not commonly see ordered at most other Vietnamese restaurants in the Boston area. (I.e. Hu Tiu Nam Vang Noodle and the Bun Bo Hue Dac Biet being the top 2 entrees on their menu, and they also serve items with snails, pork liver, pork intestines, and pork knuckle to name a few, but not limited to these.) The service was quick, and the food came out within a reasonable time. There is also a decent number of tables inside the restaurant so we didn't have trouble getting a table on a Friday night. There is also street parking available on side streets. As for the food, there is a dry and also a wet version of Hu Tiu Nam Vang Noodle. We ordered the dry version, which comes with a small soup broth on the side for you to dip or lightly pour over your noodles. It also comes with a dark colored savory soy sauce-like sauce that you can dip into as well. It was our first time trying this dish in general! While we are both not huge fans of liver and not used to eating intestines prepared this way, we still enjoyed how unique and savory this dish was. I'm also just a huge fan of dipping noodle dishes in general! As for the Bun Bo Hue Dac Biet, I enjoyed this dish slightly less but it was still good overall. I forgot to take my antihistamine that day and we didn't know snails were seafood. When it came out and obviously some of the other side dishes, we checked which ones had shellfish. They were apologetic that they didn't ask about allergies and offered to take it back and not charge us. We really wanted to try the snails because of the reviews though so we picked it off the shell there and ate it when we got home after I took antihistamine. Exceptional noodles and broths here! This small restaurant has about 10 small tables but is very tidy and adorably decorated. The staff are very sweet and checked in with us often. My favorite item on the menu would be Bun Bo Bap & Cha Cua, it's a slightly different version of Bun Bo Hue (which my mom always order here). Their Bo Kho Banh Mi and Hu Tieu Kho are great as well. I have a hard time deciding what to order here each time I visit because everything tastes great! Everything is so flavorful! I've only tried their Oc Huong once, but it was fresh and I love the little pieces of fried fat. The restaurant is located on the main road so you can usually find street parking. We ordered take out from here and got the beef stew. It arrived in conveniently packaged soup bowls so that the stew was easy to eat. Having just moved to the area, this was excellent as we are doing kitchen renovations and we're at the mercy of the restaurant to provide adequate ways of eating the dish. Several other places we tried failed spectacularly. The broth was FANTASTIC, and lots of basil and other toppings were provided. You know this place is authentic, as it has an entire section of the menu devoted to intestine. As it was our first time trying the place, we went with the more conventional beef stew. The customer service is excellent, the food is above average, and the ambiance is pleasant. While there's still room for improvement in the food, it's overall quite enjoyable. read more
