Last weekend we cast the ashes of our good friend, Bryan M., into the sea while aboard the sailing yacht Jada. I must say that the entire experience was first rate, thanks to the owner Carole, skipper and crew of Jada. We motor-sailed out to the Point and found the legal off shore area where it is permissible to scatter the ashes of the deceased. Carole had secured for us the necessary permits ahead of time. The crew provided a very classy looking urn to use for the dispersement. We said a few prayers and tossed the ashes into the sea along with wreaths and rose petals that we had brought along. It was at once fritting, dignified and meaningful for our guests (about 18 people). The captain of the boat then slowly circled the spot where the ashes and wreaths were laying. We hadn't counted on this but it was a very nice touch. Upon returning to the bay under sail, we caught a freshening breeze and had a lively sail. We used the time to share anecdotes and remembrances about our dear friend. The crew was great. Mindful. Respectful and eager to please. We were served several appetizers and beverages and it all came off without a hitch. Towards the end of the cruise we were presented with souvenir Jada post cards that had an inscription on the back of the precise longitude and latitude of the scattering of ashes. I hired Carole for her sailboat, JADA... because she offered a special scattering of ashes, a "Celebration of Life" for my twin sister Donna. She deserved something unique and awesome and this was it. None of us has sailed before on a boat like this. Captain Gene and crew set sail on April 24@11:00 am. As we left the dock, the clouds departed and a beautiful clear sky was gifted us. Everyone invited was amazed by the crew's duties to sail to the designated longitude & latitude and take care of us; Corrine was my savior and helped with the flowers, vessel prep, serving of food and refreshments. She had a pillow for me to kneel on while pouring sissy's ashes over the side into the sea. The crew was absolutely fantastic. Donna even got flyovers from a Navy P3, 5 helicopters and 5 Seal specially armed speedboats zipping right by us going out to sea to protect us. Guess that was a first for everyone onboard! Exhilarating, emotional, and mind blowing time we had. We could not have gotten a better send off for sissy. A once in a lifetime experience that I know will never be replicated. read more

The crew was excellent. Jen was very sweet plus efficient, served in a timely manner with snacks and beverages and went out of her way to be sure everyone was happy. She gave some interesting info about whales while standing on foredeck talking to guests, answering questions. She's a good spout spotter. We saw the two Fin Whales, a momma and a baby. That's a rare siting - plus a lot of dolphins ghosting the ship. They're so cool to watch. The captain held a good rapport with the group, had a good sense of humor, and spoke very well about SD history plus sea life we saw. He and crew sailed the boat quite well. We hauled ass coming in, starboard rail almost in the water. Brad is very good with people as well, he made sure everyone was safe and and accommodated all the guests as it got pretty cold and windy and many needed extra blankets. My girlfriend and I decided to take a nice trip out on the water with Jada. Parking was easy, finding the boat was easy and the boat itself was in great condition, especially for being 72 years old! The second we found a place to sit we were greeted and asked if we would like anything to eat or drink. They have a great selection of beer, wine, soda, water, etc. and guacamole, pita chips, cheese, etc. Fortunately, we had a light lunch before hand and weren't expecting steak and mash potatoes. The time went by pretty quickly as we snapped photos and looked at the downtown San Diego skyline from a completely new view. It seemed as though every time my drink appeared close to empty we had someone ask if we'd like another one, this can be dangerous if you're sipping on a nice Corona in the sun ;). I've lived in San Diego for 12 years and have been on the bay in power boats a few times. My first experience on the Jada was about a year ago and I can say that I would choose sailing on this one of a kind beauty over and power boat. It's amazing to see the sails and feel the wind move you through the water. It's a one of a kind experience and awesome to see how everything works right before your eyes. San Diego has a great sailing community and what better way to discover these waters then on The Jada a classic sailboat with a piece of history. we had a sailing memorial celebration for my grandmother a couple of weeks ago and it was such a beautiful, peaceful and amazing experience. The captain and crew were very patient and kind and respectful to our needs. They offered blankets, drinks. and they had bluetooth so we were able to play my grandmas favorite music as we sailed. JADA was clean and spacious. we have beautiful weather and we were on a beautiful boat. On our way back we saw sea lions and dolphins it was truly amazing. We stumbled across Jada while researching a trip to San Diego last weekend. The price was very reasonable and the crew was great - efficient, knowledgable, friendly, and always coming around with more drinks and snacks. Captain Dave did a great job finding and following whales, and we were even lucky enough to have one surface about 50 feet from the boat. I highly recommend Jada to anyone who is looking for a great cruise without all of the overcrowding that seems to accompany most excursions nowadays. Crew. Perfect weather conditions. Boat to ourselves. All equated to a wonderful photoshoot. This was my 2nd time on JADA but having an intimate setting with just a few friends and the crew was over the top amazing. We needed the boat in various positions for photos and Chris was able to keep getting the spot just right. I was part of a photography group that had the pleasure of being onboard for The Star of India's 160 birthday. From the moment we got onboard the crew were engaging and helpful. The captain was determined to track down the tall ships that were out to see. As we passed by some of the old ships were led in the customary greeting of "hip, hip hooray!", it was so much fun to see the other ships cheer and return the greeting. It was a trip far beyond my expectaions.. I can't wait to get on her again for another adventure at sea. read more

We had a company team building on Jada last weekend. I was looking for an event that would challenge people a little but also be a ton of fun. Jada and the crew delivered all of that and more. We divided into teams and actually sailed the boat (with guidance from the attentive and funny crew)! It was such a thrill for everyone. As an old-time naval architect, I took even greater pleasure in our sail around the San Diego Bay than perhaps the average guest. Every detail of this wonderful old racing yacht has been lovingly preserved where possible and refurbished where necessary. The hosts do a great job of explaining when needed and leaving you alone to enjoy the experience otherwise. Depending on the length of the outing, they also provide classy snacks and drinks. For a wonderful day on the bay, sail on the Jada! The crew is very personable and helpful, passing drinks and snacks throughout the trip. The ship is immaculate and seating is plentiful. We sailed up to Point Loma and back around the bay, sailing very near the Midway Aircraft Museum and The Star of India. The captain narrates the trip, providing many behind the scenes notes. I've sailed with Jada twice and had such a pleasant experience both times. The sailing with smooth with great weather and so relaxing. The crew is friendly and knowledgeable about sea life, other boats, and anything we saw on our voyage. Snacks and drinks were available throughout the day so no one goes hungry. What a great way to spend the day! This yacht is gorgeous and the crew were not only friendly and knowledgeable but great fun! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are looking for an excuse to go for another tour! I heard that they had a docent from the American Cetacean Society on a trip or 2 to teach people about the marine mammals along our coast. What a great addition! Wind came up right on schedule and the boat is both comfortable and exciting to sail. They do all the work but have plenty of time to share stories about the boat and point out the sights.
