This park includes some fantastic boardwalk goes through wetlands that ecologically look more like what I expect from North Carolina than South Carolina. Very Disappointing Experience -- I Will Not Be Returning…read more On September 14, 2026, five of us booked an 8-hour private deep-sea fishing charter with Little River Fishing Fleet. Our original trip was scheduled for September 15, but Little River called us the day before and asked if we could move the trip to September 14 because of bad weather expected the following day. We agreed, and our trip ran from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. At first, I was impressed with the company for being proactive about the weather. Unfortunately, that was probably the best part of the experience. We were greeted by Captain Henry and his assistant, Jordan. Captain Henry was knowledgeable about fishing and answered many of our questions. He also helped one of the people in our group when a hook needed to be removed from their finger. Little River also cleaned and filleted the fish we caught. Unfortunately, the negatives far outweighed the positives. The biggest problem was that this was supposed to be an 8-hour deep-sea fishing trip, but we spent far too much of that time NOT fishing. The boat was slow and appeared old, and the seats were extremely uncomfortable. We spent a significant amount of time simply riding to and from fishing locations. On top of that, approximately one hour of our trip was spent catching bait. I understand that catching bait can be part of fishing, but when you're paying for an 8-hour private deep-sea charter, losing an hour to catching bait--combined with the excessive amount of time spent traveling--leaves surprisingly little time actually fishing. We also had an issue with how one situation on the boat was handled. The captain yelled at someone in our group. In my opinion, if customers are expected to know exactly how to handle a fishing rod and what to do when a large fish hits, those instructions should be clearly explained BEFORE someone is hooked up to a large fish--not after a mistake is made. I was also disappointed with the equipment. Based on what we experienced, I did not feel that the boat and equipment were properly suited to the type of fishing we were expecting from an 8-hour deep-sea charter. Then there was the issue that concerned me the most: barracuda. We caught five large fish, approximately 3-4 feet long. Four of those five fish were barracuda. During the trip, the discussion about whether barracuda were safe to eat left us with the impression that they were okay to consume. After returning home, I researched the issue extensively and spoke with other deep-sea fishing companies. I learned that barracuda can carry a significant risk of ciguatera poisoning, particularly larger barracuda. That made me very uncomfortable with how the issue was presented to us during the trip. I'm not claiming the captain intentionally misled us. I am saying that, based on the information we were given and what I learned afterward, I believe customers should receive much clearer information about the potential health risks associated with eating barracuda before being encouraged to keep or consume them. To be fair, I appreciated Little River contacting us about the weather, Captain Henry's fishing knowledge, and the fact that they cleaned our fish. But an 8-hour private charter is a significant expense, and I expected much more time actually fishing--not spending large portions of the trip riding around and catching bait. Five people paid for an 8-hour deep-sea fishing experience. We caught five large fish, four of which were barracuda, and I left feeling that we simply did not get the fishing experience we paid for. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to Little River Fishing Fleet, and based on our experience, I cannot recommend them. If you're considering booking with them, I would strongly recommend asking detailed questions beforehand about the boat, travel time, how much time will actually be spent fishing, whether you'll be expected to catch your own bait, what equipment will be used, and what they recommend doing with barracuda if you catch them.

That being said, I hesitate to post this because I truly do love supporting local businesses. But with tourist season starting, I think it's important to share an honest experience. The first few times we went out with this company, it was amazing. We followed the shrimp boats and not only saw tons of dolphins, but also got a close-up look at the shrimp boats pulling in shrimp and other sea creatures. They would even bring a few things onboard for the kids (and adults) to see before tossing them back. It made the experience feel really unique and memorable. However, ever since the shrimp boat has been out of commission (probably the last year and a half), we honestly haven't seen dolphins the last 3-4 trips. I completely understand there are never guarantees with wildlife, but it has been a little disappointing. It's still a nice boat ride for the cost -- I would just suggest not getting your kids too excited about dolphins and making sure they understand sightings are never guaranteed. Yesterday, we went on the sunset cruise, and unfortunately it was one of the worst experiences we've had. I understand the policy is that the cruise runs rain or shine, but the ocean conditions were rough enough that I truly don't think they should have taken people out. There were young children onboard, people getting sick, and several passengers who were visibly scared as we went through large swells offshore. As someone who has been on this boat many times, even I was uncomfortable. If it had been my first trip, I honestly would have been terrified. Considering the boat had already gone out multiple times earlier that day, I feel like they should have recognized the conditions were not ideal -- especially knowing there was little chance of seeing dolphins in waters that rough. I just think better judgment should have been used. If you're visiting for a family vacation, I would strongly recommend checking ocean conditions beforehand, because I'm not sure cancellations are considered unless absolutely necessary.

There was a bit of miscommunication during booking -- the woman who took our reservation over the phone didn't pass along all the details correctly. When we arrived, the man behind the check-in booth was there, but he seemed to be resting because we had to ask one of the deckhands to assist us at first. Once we got his attention, he called the woman who handled our reservation and cleared everything up immediately. He wasn't the friendliest older gentleman, but he got the job done and made sure we were set to go. Once on board, Captain Mike and the two deckhands (whose names I wish I could remember) made the experience unforgettable. They were professional, upbeat, and clearly knew their stuff. There were a few moments when I thought we might be getting a little too close to other boats -- but that's part of the thrill of being out on the water. When you've got a capable captain who knows how to handle his vessel, you learn to just trust the process and enjoy the ride. And let me tell you -- we saw dolphins. Plenty of them. Pods swimming right alongside the boat, playing in the wake, even a few that surfaced close enough to make everyone on deck gasp and cheer. It was one of those surreal, peaceful experiences that make you forget about everything else for a while. Maybe that's why some other reviewers didn't have the same reaction -- perhaps they went on a slower day. But for us, it was nothing short of magical. We only spent about 30 minutes in the open sea watching the dolphins, but the hour-long ride to and from the viewing area was just as enjoyable. The sea breeze, the ocean views, the sounds of the waves -- all of it came together for a perfect outing. Whether you're visiting the area or looking for something unique to do as a couple or family, this cruise is well worth it. The park has clean restrooms, a picnic pavilion and a playground area as well. It is popular with people for walking their dogs but it was never crowded with people or dogs when we were there. There is an observation walkway/dock over the water and a boat/fishing dock that rises and falls with the tide. There were a few fishermen using the dock as well as fishing from the Intracoastal Waterway bank each time we visited. There is a small parking lot with some additional parking nearby.
