Three years at Saint Andrew's: excellent kindergarten, then labeling and classroom removals without restorative follow-through Sharing our family's experience so other parents . Our child attended Saint Andrew's for three years. Kindergarten was outstanding. Miss Gaulden brought warmth and deep experience; our child thrived and we were grateful for her classroom. She left mid-year after more than 15 years--a sudden change that removed a stabilizing presence. First grade was a sharp contrast, especially in how concerns were communicated and handled. Our child later told us he was told he was "not a good student." We were not informed at the time, so we can only speak to the impact. We believe that phrasing is inappropriate for any young student. Effective feedback should name a behavior and the next action ("Here are the two steps to start," "Use the 'I need a break' card"), and if harmful language is used, there should be a restorative repair with the student. In addition, our child reports being removed from the first-grade classroom multiple times. The teacher reportedly told him "Out" to make him leave--sometimes after he repeated "silly" comments. For early elementary, removing a child from class for that kind of age-typical verbal behavior, without a consistent coaching plan and brief data, felt disproportionate to us. When we suggested teacher coaching/training to align classroom language and routines, the lower-school administration framed the situation primarily as a child issue and provided an extensive list of requirements for our child, rather than discussing staff coaching and consistency. We were told the expectation was an overnight jump to independence in first grade, rather than a developmentally typical, linear progression. In our current school that emphasizes written/visual directions, defined roles in group work, and strength-based language, our child is observed as empathetic, helpful, and an active group participant. That contrast suggests the issue was not a fixed trait in the child but the classroom approach and how behavior was defined and supported. this is our experiences. read more

The staff is absolutely wonderful--kind, approachable, and always willing to go the extra mile to support each student. You can tell that the faculty genuinely loves what they do and is passionate about creating a nurturing and enriching environment for learning. Three weeks of summer camp sending my daughter to this facility. First week some boy was spitting on her. She didn't even want to go last day of the week. Second week some boy was throwing foam blocks and balls at her. Week ended in food poisoning. Third week the culprit from second week continued to bully my daughter. Today I was witness to it as was a counsellor of the group. With a smile telling that my daughter just overreacting. For whole week my girl was telling me that she is afraid to come out of the classroom. And today I understood why. Seems that administration doing nothing towards bullying and cover up inappropriate behaviour. read more

We recently started our journey at SAES for 6th grade. So far, it's been a great experience. Some of the positives- 1. Service: The school has a strong service value. Students learn a lot through service - leadership skills, empathy, kindness. 2. Leadership - Our daughter is getting opportunities she would not have gotten in a bigger school - she gets to speak during assembly, participate as the student ambassador, take part in student panels - this is really helping her find her confidence and voice. 3. Extracurricular - The school has a strong extracurricular presence. Our daughter has been taking part in the robotics program, the after school sports also provides a wide range of exposure - a different sport every quarter. For girls it is - volleyball, basketball, soccer and flag football. 4. The Robotics program is strong, and my daughter enjoys being on the team. 5. The school has strong academics, and teachers really care in making sure the kids are being challenged to their potential. The school has office hours and advisory, so kids are encouraged to advocate for themselves if they need the extra support. Any concerns we have brought up, have been handled with seriousness and we have been given a plan rod action right away. 6. The school is true to community. They strive to build community through various socials, 1:1 coffee with principal for new parents, ice cream events, summer playdates. My daughter joined in 6th grade, but she has been able to make great friends in a few short weeks. We are having a great experience so far! read more

My child is naturally introverted and tends to take his time warming up to new environments. He has always been cautious and somewhat timid when it comes to advocating for himself. As parents, when the time came for him to start school, our goal was to find a nurturing community that placed as much emphasis on character development as it did on academic excellence. Having been on both the student and parent sides of the school, I can fairly say it's a good place. I can't imagine being anywhere else. As another reviewer mentioned, the price can be hard to swallow. There are some AMAZING teachers here - you know the kind, the ones that go so far above and beyond. They really do make it all worthwhile. I love the music and art programs. The school is also a cool community of it's own. I talk to friends with kids at other schools, and am amazed that they don't know other parents at their kids' schools. So not the case here! Aside from the caring teachers, I think the thing I love most at this school is the way the older kids respect the younger kids. It is certainly encouraged through the buddy program, but I think there's also just something passed on year to year among the kids. It's like they see it when they're little, and as they grow, continue to model the same behavior. It's impressive to watch the way the older kids watch out for the younger ones, and treat them with such genuine kindness. It's pretty cool. read more

I cannot say enough about how wonderful our experience has been at St. Andrew's. This is our 6th year and I am amazed at how consistent our years have been. Our daughter absolutely loves going to school and now that the work is getting to be a little more challenging she has been set up to succeed with a great work ethic and study habits. School is ok academically and good with arts but has recently become very money minded. They removed separate after school care fees and now make everyone pay it, whether we use it or not. They also run campaigns all the time for money and treat kids differently based on how much parents donate. Be prepared to shell out 5-10k per kid beyond stated tuition. read more

Our family has had three children attend and graduate from Saint Andrew's. Two children have moved on to two of the highest ranked universities in the US and the 3rd is thriving in high school. We moved to Saint Andrew's when our eldest finished kindergarten in the public school because the local school's classes were far too large. Since then, our children have benefited from the individual attention they received from very skilled, dedicated teachers. Our kids placed extremely well in their high school math and science courses (the courses that mattered most to them). The middle school curriculum was carefully designed to ensure that the stronger students were well-prepared for second and third year high school courses. More importantly, the teachers know each student - during their time at Saint Andrew's, each teacher knew my child, their classwork, homework, strengths and weaknesses and gave me guidance about their individual academic situation. They always provided guidance about any academic (or social) issue that would arise. Now, when they visit as alumni, the teachers still mentor them and genuinely follow their high school and college careers. And the sports and the art programs were always excellent. These programs include all the kids - no matter their talent or experience - and give them an opportunity to shine. We loved our experience at Saint Andrews and always look forward to returns to see our friends in this community. read more

This is a review regarding employment at Saint Andrew's Episcopal School. It is a wonderful work environment! The administration cares about the long term successes of their employees. It is a place that encourages its staff to learn, grow and change for the better. (Writing this review because when I applied to the job I wanted to know what it was like from the perspective of a current employee) I work in the Admissions office with Mrs. Lani Mah. She sincerely cares about making sure the prospective families who visit us truly understand the mission of our school and believe that to be the case for their family as well. It is wonderful working in a place where you truly believe in the product that you are sharing. It makes work life a pleasure. You can be sure that the people you work with really want the best for you. They will support you and assist you with patience and care. That's what our teachers are all about! We heard about Saint Andrews through a good friend who sung it's praises. After being disappointed with how our first child was "lost in the masses" in a public Kindergarten class of 22 children, we decided to make the move. We are in our third year now with the school and see both our children thriving emotionally, socially, and academically. With small class sizes, each child receives a lot of personal attention. In addition to their classroom, children spend time in art, music, library, computer lab, and PE. I like the fact that the school teaches to the national education standards rather than California's requirements (CA are lower). There is a very strong sense of community which is also important to us. read more

As with many schools, there are a few great teachers (specifically, the pre-K teachers were great and are the reason that this isn't a one star review), but most of the teachers I've had experiences with in several years at SAES are not great. Moreover, there's a super high turnover rate on the teachers and staff. Most of all, I really didn't feel like the staff actually cared about the children as individuals (although they can really talk like they do). If your child is well behaved, SAES is probably an acceptable place for them (although there are many other better alternatives available). If your child needs nurturing, direction, discipline, etc, I'd look elsewhere. FWIW, I have other children who are at other private schools nearby and who have gone through the local Saratoga public schools as well. I believe our experience at SAES was about equivalent to, or slightly worse the public school experience and notably below the other private schools our kids currently attend. In the end, St Andrews is a school that will talk a good talk -- you'll feel like it's a great place, great community with staff and teachers that really care about your child. However, when it comes down to it, it's a lot of big words and fake smiles with little to back it up. If you're considering this school, please take what you hear with a grain of salt and consider other alternatives. read more

Saint Andrew's is a school with very solid academics and some top-notch, innovative programs. The school is in a beautiful setting, across from the Saratoga Orchard. The students walk on a forested path, along the Saratoga creek, to and from the playing fields each day. Wonderful! The Saint Andrew's community is very welcoming, with strong parent involvement and a faculty that works together very closely. We were a Saint Andrew's family for 11 years. I had 2 children come through SAES, both previously at other public schools in Saratoga. Overall, I am very disappointed with SAES. While it's not a bad school, it also isn't a good school, and with the high tuition, I would expect much more. Academically, SAES is at the same level or below the other Saratoga Public schools. I completely expected a higher level of academics (a large reason I moved my children over from public school) and was shocked to find math below public school levels and language arts at the same level. If you have a child who is not a "standard cookie cutter" child (does not academically excel and is very well behaved), SAES is definitely not the best place for your child. My academically advanced child was not at all challenged and the teachers made no special accommodations or line of work to challenge him. We also have friends with a child at SAES with some behavior challenges and the school was very rigid, unaccommodating, unwilling to work with him, and very negative. He was quickly labeled a "bad kid" and was often sent home from school. Ultimately, the staff forced him to withdraw in the middle of the school year, saying that they "want him to be happy." They did not refund any tuition, and ultimately the child went elsewhere and thrived in a different, more nurturing, positive environment. In addition to all this, the staff turn over rate is very high. We're constantly getting emailed about other staff leaving SAES and the search for a replacement. This high level of churn is obviously very bad for a school and the impact on continuity for the children. read more

As a new family , I'd like to share our first year experience in 6th grade at SAES. We were looking for the school that aims for whole child philosophy of teaching including religion. The admission process was very well done and we truly enjoyed getting to know Lani Mah and Irene Cheng. They both are very professional and extremely attentive to the needs of new families. Our child had a smooth transition to middle school . The school have organized so many different events to welcome new families including meetings with Head of School - Eric Carlson. He is a hard working, highly inspirational professional. Tom Burgess is the head of middle school who joined the school last year. He is a very knowledgeable and highly experienced professional. His broad experience, open minded personality and amazing responsiveness makes our school life enjoyable . Both leaders always welcome parent feedback and make a great team. The school provides very nurturing and friendly learning environment with strong academics. Most of our child's teachers are new to school. They all come with strong background in education. Our child made memorable and strong connection with all of them. Their unique personalities, openness and great talents have made a huge impact on our lives and our daughter's success at school. They are always available to discuss any concerns you may have as well as sharing good things about your child. All the subjects are taught at very high academic level defined as research based learning. We also enjoy going to chapel services. Father Cameron is always so friendly and we truly enjoy his inspirational speech. Music classes are phenomenal. Mr. Higgins is one of a kind teacher that you need to meet and see his work. Also, you can be involved at school as a parent volunteer. The community is friendly and supportive. SAES is a happy place to be where the piece and dynamics of learning play in harmony. We have a seventh grade and 2nd grade child at St.Andrew's and have been there for three years. We moved them from another private school. We have been extremely happy with the school and environment. It has the right mix of academic rigor, character education and enrichment activities. It is a great school for developing a well rounded student. We have been extremely happy with the teachers that our 2nd grader has had from Kindergarten on. The middle school is large enough such that children have a variety of students from whom to find their friends, yet small enough that you can ensure that they are somewhat sheltered. The parent community is very welcoming and friendly, and it is a really fun place to volunteer! The parent board is the best run volunteer organization I have ever encountered. Having ben a part of this community for 7 years now, I can honestly say I'm already beginning to feel sadness there are only a couple years left before we move on. The friendships that have been made between kids, families and faculty - it's like nothing we ever expected. One of the main reasons that we selected Saint Andrew's was for the small classroom experience. We have not been disappointed. Our child has had some incredible teachers over the years. The teachers have been so engaged and enthusiastic, it makes one want to go back to school all over again. The teachers enthusiasm and passion for teaching shows. They stay after class to assist with extra help if needed. They chaperone excursions and adventures during their weekends and over summer break. They build a real bond with their kids that teaches so much more than just the course material. Teaching to the whole child really does happen here. Yes, no place is perfect and no school will meet 100% of your expectations all the time. But Saint Andrew's comes as close as it can get - no regrets at all for being a part of this school. We are convinced our child will be well-prepared for what the next stages of life will present after her years here at St. A's. read more

I rarely write reviews, but i was so surprised at the positive reviews given my terrible experience after 2 years at this school, I felt I needed to warn other parents considering St Andrews for their children. First, there's constant interruption in staff. Every month, there are several teachers leaving, constantly looking for new staff. The staff here can present the school and its goals very well, but in practice they seem to care much more about monetary contributions than the children. The curriculum is on par with the local public schools and behind other private schools and in the lower grades, academically advanced children are not presented with work that is challenging. This is, at best, a mediocre school in an area of great schools. We will not be returning. read more

Saint Andrews is an excellent school providing a well-rounded education with an important emphasis on character development. The teachers are very excited about what they teach and truly love their students. Our daughter entered Saint Andrews as a sixth grader. She came in the middle of the year without knowing anyone. The students as well as the adult community warmly welcomed us and took extra steps to make the transition smooth. We felt included right away! The staff as well as the parent board are very intentional about decisions they make with regards to curriculum, staffing, campus improvements, etc. Thoughtful decisions are made everyday. When we have any concerns, the teacher and heads of school are willing to listen and help us with solutions. Teachers are especially accessible for students should they need extra help. The religious aspect of the school is just right too. Not overbearing but just enough to give a child a sense of something beyond themselves to guide them and make them feel secure. This is the intangible that can't be quantified but has enormous impact on a child's development and we are so grateful Saint Andrews values it as much as we do! read more

This is our children's first year at Saint Andrew's. We have one child attending lower school and another child in middle school. From the time we visit for Open House, we felt welcomed and have a sense the school is a great community. We were considering Saint Andrews and another highly acclaimed private school. We chose Saint Andrews because the school has a balance of academic rigor, enrichments and activities. Our only concern at the start of school year was whether they might be able to make friends quickly. Turned out our worry was needless, both children found friends the first days of school and the transition was very smooth. They like their teachers and both participated in sports as well as other school activities. At Back to School night, we were very impressed with the knowledge, enthusiasm and dedications shown by all the teachers. Homework is challenging but not stressful, and just the right mix in terms of relevancy and time. Typically not more than 30 to 45 minutes for our younger child; less than 2 hours for the middle schooler (that's including some longer term projects). Both children are happy and thriving. read more

Our son was in Saint Andrew's for 2 years. Frankly speaking, the curriculum was disappointing. I cannot see the difference between SA and public schools. Top public schools are definitely better than SA, especially in Math. Some teachers are under-qualified. There was a multiple choice question in a homework asking what the opposite word of "fresh water" was. My son chose "salty water" which was the correct answer. The teacher said "used water" was correct. I really couldn't believe my eyes! As for the character development part, they didn't mention it anymore to students after kindergarten. I would say the proportion of problematic kids in the school is higher than what I expected, provided it is a school who claims they emphasize character development and discipline. Teachers and the admin are not capable of handling problematic kids. We then decided to switch to a better school and let the school knew about our decision, though the administration did ask us to stay. A few weeks before the school year ended, my son (7 yrs old) was kicked by a kid (X) in the same grade on the tummy during recess. We ended up sending him to ER as advised by the doctor's office. My son then consistently told us and the police that X kicked him on the tummy during recess. The teachers chatting far away didn't see that happened. The admin questioned the so called "witnesses" and claimed that X kicked a ball 12 ft away and hit my son. However, we learnt from one witness that he in fact saw X kicking a ball and hit my son on his side, not on the tummy. In short, nobody noticed when X kicked my son. But that witness did see my son rolling on the ground because of great pain. The admin finally asked my son and X to sit down with one person Y from the admin to "discuss" the issue. I was not allowed to be with them. After the meeting, my son broke down and burst into tears. He told me Y forced him to admit that it was the ball that hit him, despite the fact that my son kept telling Y it is X who kicked him on his tummy. The admin just wanted to tell my son to shut up so that things will be much easier for them, esp. we would not be their customer for the following school year. read more

I got helpful information from the external review sites such as Yelp(before they filtered them out) and the greatschools.org. We visited the school and liked what we saw, and especially a warm feel about the whole environment and the teachers. Now that our child has been there for over a year we are really happy with our decision. We like the balance between pure academics and character education; the chapel; the fieldtrips and community service programs; the music program (choir, band, etc.); the opportunity for every kid to do speaking and performance in public; the strong language program. This year they also revised and updated their math curriculum. How I wish they go all the way to 12th grade! read more

Saw a teacher encourage a young student to use the ipad to draw their block design. I personally don't see why it's necessary and why he couldn't have just used a piece of paper and pencil instead. Also not too crazy about the use of individual whiteboards (those markers are carcinogenic) Call me old-fashioned but children K-3 should learn, experience, draw, use their hands and fingers and not get dependent on technology at that age. My husband and I can't say enough wonderful things about this school. We have been at St. Andrew's going on 8 years now and currently have 3 boys there. They wake up every morning looking forward to school; which I think says a lot about this institution. The teachers and parent community are second to none. The teachers are very warm, personable, and dedicated. They really care and take a personal interest in each and every child. The parent community is very open and welcoming. Saint Andrews is a fabulous school. After touring several private schools in the peninsula and the south bay, this was the one that stood out. Our daughter started the pre-K program and absolutely loves it. We know that after a lot of research we made the right choice. We have moved from another state to CA this year. Fortunately my son was lucky enough to be accepted to Saint Andrews having come from a very progressive school with good grades. The teachers are wonderful and the pupils have made him feel very comfortable. He has found it easy to fit in with the children who have been there for a while. The curriculum is challenging and prepares each child with a sound education in order to achieve the grades for the top public schools and of course the top competitive private schools. My son came to St. Andrew's as a 6th grader. Of course, being a child of 11 years, he did not want to make a change, any change! It has been the best decision. He absolutly LOVES it and as parents, we love it even more. St. Andrew's gives him a sense of belonging, accomplishment, the teachers are very attentive to the needs of each child and, did I mention, he LOVES it. The emphasis they put on character makes for well rounded, respectful kids. He has been in 7th grade for a couple weeks now. Each day he gets in the car he can't wait to tell me what he did that day. Our family has been at this school for twelve years, fifteen, when all said and done. Our oldest has graduated and is a rising junior at Bellarmine College Preparatory. We feel Saint Andrew's prepared him well. Our twin girls are entering middle school and feel with the challenges they encountered in 5th they're prepared for 6th grade. An important benefit for us are the small class sizes. As with every school you have bumps in the road. We have, and most were addressed in a timely matter. As far as religion, there's just enough. With a new head of school and some turnover with faculty, new methods, ideas and challenges have been put into play that has benefitted the school as a whole. So far, so good! We enrolled our 3rd grader at SAES at the start of the school year & have been thrilled with things so far! The class sizes are small, academics are strong, & friends my daughter has made have been wonderful. About 3 months ago we received a call that a spot was opening for our 6th grader. We jumped on the chance to enroll him & I can't believe how easy the transition has been in the middle of the year! The teachers have been wonderful in working with him, catching him up to speed where needed & letting him adjust accordingly. Next year we'll have another 6th grader starting in Sept & I can't wait! The school's high academic standards, mixed with art, music, phys ed, & religion make for a very well-rounded student & make the school a perfect fit for my three kids for extremely different reasons. Love this school! This is my daughter's second year. Teachers have been not only good - they have been OUTSTANDING! Classes are small so there is frequent interaction with my daughter's primary teacher. I have also received unsolicited feedback from all of my daughter's teachers (PE, Music, etc). Students know other students and parents know other parents. We enrolled in this school after moving here from out of state. It was the best decision we made! In addition to academics, our daughter is receiving character development through the emphasis on community. The parent network is strong and many volunteer due to interest in their children. During parent-teacher conferences, I noticed strong attendance from both mothers and fathers. Parents frequently socialize together. My daughter has built many friendships. My daughter is early primary - yet even the middle school children seem to know her. She feels super special when the older children say hello - which they often do as the children here are just so polite! There are strong academics at many schools including this one.
