The staff truly go above and beyond for the kids, and there always seems to be something fun and engaging happening every month. From the back-to-school event and Halloween celebration to the Turkey Trot dance, Lunch with Santa, Bingo, GEMS, Father-Son events, and two field trips each year, the sense of community here is incredible. The tree lighting and Christmas serenade are especially memorable and truly capture the warmth of the school community. This is by far the best school community we've ever been a part of, and it's an absolute gem in the heart of South Philly.

My business class with Ms. English have us an opportunity to learn real life stocks and trading. Why we would buy a stock and when not to buy a stock. We also learned financial planning tools. My computer class gave me the knowledge I needed to continue to grow with the fast paced changing of paper to electronics. Mind you I graduated in 2005 so computers were just starting to take over traditional pen to paper. My teachers really looked out for me and cared. Truly cared. I went through a really tough time and was sadly very depressed. I was able to get guidance and talk to an amazing counselor who helped me achieve my goals and get me through high school. I met my best friend in high school. I was finally not being bullied and when I did get bullied Mrs. Shenk played no games. I appreciate Mr. Ronzoni for his patience with me and not just correcting a paper, but showing me my mistakes and explaining them to me. It is making me the best paralegal and writer I can be currently. I loved going to the Flossie Shop and talking to Mrs. Gallagher (R.I.P.) on my lunch and her smile could brighten anyone's day. Delta School on Byberry Road in Northeast Philadelphia is an amazing place…read more It is a fully accredited school for children with special needs due to autism, neurologic or emotional issues that make mainstreaming them in public schools highly problematic. It has been around since 1958 on a lovely small campus. Children from surrounding Philadelphia, its suburbs, and New Jersey can send their students here for a quality education geared to their individual requirements. The administration, teachers, and staff are specialized and totally committed to their mission. I was fortunate to discover Delta School and its CEO, Stanley Stein, as part of the Newtown Creek Coalition's work to protect and preserve the natural watercourse that runs through our community. Delta owns property right along the Creek (smart investment), and our non-profit approached theirs about doing projects together to create an access to the Creek in a natural, inviting setting that could be utilized by walkers, hikers, bikers, and students. Open Space funding is available to make this happen, but it takes time and understanding of what is possible in exchange for what is given up. As the lead for this effort, I sought out Delta School and arranged a meeting to give them our vision, and their part in it if they wished to share. We are in preliminary discussions, but having the opportunity to visit the school, talk with the visionaries running it, and watch some of the students on campus, was heartwarming and laden with respectful appreciation of what was going on there. The world is a much better place for Delta School. May they continue to help children change their lives and prepare them for the road ahead.

I attended this school during 3rd grade for one full year in the 60s. That one, single year…read moretraumatized me for the rest of my life. I was placed in the front of the school in a room with approximately 10-12 other children with ADD. We did well in subject matters but had trouble staying focused and seated. What I do remember very well were the beatings we all suffered from the teachers. One was named Lauer, possibly Alfred. Back in the 60s, they used old-fashioned yardsticks to keep us in order. They would beat us until we cried. We had nobody to appeal to, as we were just a bunch of 7 year old munchkins. How bad could we have been? Lauer would first verbally torture the children. Then, if we reacted in an adverse manner, he would take his yardstick, which was never far from him, and beat the living crap of the child in his sights. Although we were not part of the larger school with many autistic children, we did have lunch with them in the lunchroom. I remember quite vividly those poor souls being beaten and abused by the staff. They never tried to hide or cover up the abuse. Delta School and others have been successful for the past 5-10 years at deleting my eyewitness account of what went on in this hellhole. Every time I post what happened there, they complain and my review is deleted. Next time, I will file suit and testify in Philadelphia court. This is a truthful account and they want it quashed. If you love your children, DO NOT send them to this school.

This school has it's pros and cons. The pro is the small…read moreclass sizes. Less than 50 students per grade, so it is possible to know all of your classmates. This is also a con because it makes "cliques" more apparent. Pros: Parent-teacher relationships are strong. Attached to the church so there is no walking outside during inclement weather. Nuns still teach and run the school, this is less common in some other Catholic schools. Convenient for local children. Has after school program. CORA is available to tutor children who are having trouble, this happens during school hours. Cons: Costly, there are even charges if your child stays for lunch (which last I remember is held in the classrooms since there is no proper cafeteria.) Lack of after school activities, and those that do exist are expensive. Extracurricular classes are poor, in particular gym, which is held in the chilly basement of the church. Small class sizes mean advanced students are held back. To keep them busy they are asked to help less advanced students. Most of the student body lives in the area and graduates to Archbishop Ryan. Religion is held in high regard, and is very prevalent in the classroom. By attending this school, CCD is not mandatory as you study for and receive the sacraments through their church.
