Stay far, FAR away. I've now had two horrible instances where my parents ended up here at the end of their lives. My mother died here a little over three years ago. At the time, they would not allow us to visit because she had tested positive for COVID, even though it was 2023, and protocols had well been in place for mitigating transmission. I never got a chance to see my mother again after her admission. We were allowed to go see her and say goodbye after she passed, wearing suits and masks. Strange that I couldn't put on the gear to actually sit with her while she was still alive, but I was allowed after her passing. I never got a chance to let her know I was there. The complete lack of communication about her status and disorganization around her stay and care was egregious. We had to call repeatedly to get any type of an update, even though we were told that someone would always tell us what's going on. At one point they called and asked us for paperwork that we had given them four days prior. They had told us to fax it, and we had, and no one had bothered to look. They found it sitting on the fax machine. We swore we would never go to this hospital again.
Flash forward to this past January when my father ended up in the ER and ICU due to contracting Norovirus. We didn't want him to come here, but legally he had to because it was technically the closest to his residence. We had another horrendous experience. The stay started out decently enough, and my father seemed to be on the upswing. After a few days however, the stay took a downturn. I'm sure most of the doctors/nurses are doing the best they can, but the lack of communication in departments and across departments is egregious!
One example: the speech pathologist came in to check if he could eat/drink, and determined that while he could swallow, he shouldn't be using a straw to drink. She wrote the instructions clearly on the whiteboard on his door, so that the nursing staff could see. We saw multiple times where nurses tried to get him to drink through a straw because THEY DIDN'T READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. It was really shocking! Another example, a doctor came in telling us that he understood that my father had COVID. He didn't. The doctor had mixed up patients because he wasn't paying attention. There was also the one shitty nurse with an attitude that was trying to goad us into fights.
There are many more ridiculous examples I could give in addition to these. After a week, it truly felt like the staff was just wondering why we were even keeping our father there and not just taking him out to die already. We ended up getting him out of there and into home hospice. The communication/organization at this place needs a serious overhaul. I will forever be so upset that both of my parents had to end up here, and have these awful experiences at the end of their lives. read more
