Good place to get japanese food in Laurel. I enjoyed their teriyaki combo which came with half a orange, 8 small pieces of sushi, a cup of fried rice, grilled chicken, yum yum/hibachi sauce, and 2 gyoza (potstickers/dumplings). It didn't come with salad and soup like it said which is disappointing, I did order online for takeout if that matters. Food came out quick and we didn't have to wait long for orders. Food was hot and fresh.

Stopped here because I was craving sushi. Bad idea. The waitress was friendly but not consistent. I finally got tired of waiting for her to grab the check and just walked up to the counter. The service was horrible from walking through the door, a nasty fish tank not cleaned in years, to being greeted by an employee on the phone taking an order, then telling us to find somewhere to sit. We sit down the restaurant is a hot mess, food, crayons, napkins, silverware on the floor, and some tables. Meanwhile we are still sitting there and no one has come to our table. Where are the workers you ask? Sitting down at a table by the bar EVERY one of them except some blonde waitress was on their phone, after watching us walk to a table. No frills, good food. The service is great compared to other places considering they're still able to be staffed during this time. BEST HIBACHI in Laurel hands down. It's authentic and not gross. They have ACTUAL sushi/sashimi and cooked sushi. Hibachi fried rice is amazing. The boiled mussels, shrimp, and clams are great with the special sauce. Drinks are STRONG--use caution! So good though! I don't understand how this place isn't packed out every single night. It's the closest to Ronnin Hibachi in Louisiana that I have found since moving here. read more

We were coming in from a trip and wanted to grab lunch. The waitress was so kind, however, it was the worst Japanese food we have ever had. We ordered edamame, 2 lunch hibachi and 1 bento box. Our drinks tasted like perfume. The soup wasn't hot and the salad had yum yum sauce as dressing. The salmon was over cooked with a soggy skin left on it. The bento box had soured food on it and the rice was old. We finally received our edamame last and they were over cooked as well. We were very disappointed to the point we didn't feel safe eating our meal. We payed and left. We do not recommend eating here! read more

Never again. We've come to Sake Cafe once every year for several years now on business trips and can say this visit was hands down the worst. The sashimi was sub par, hibachi ribeye was chewy and grisly, the scallops tasted old, soup was flavorless, and the server (pretty brunette with big bun on her head) was a big disappointment. She replaced the steak once and it was worse (still chewy and super weird flavor). While it wasn't her fault they're serving up sub par beef, when she asked if it was better and we politely said it wasn't (It was still all on the plate(S), she said she was sorry and then charged us $18.95 for it--pathetic. Others have said this joint has gone downhill and we sadly concur. Food and service are both a disappointment. Don't waste your time on this dump. read more

Fabulous sushi in a small town? Surprising to me, but it turned out to be true! We had the salmon roll, eel & avocado roll and some of the best gyoza dumplings ever! Perfectly cooked. The salmon was super fresh and the eel was melt in your mouth delicious. Our server, Caley, was quick, friendly and cute as a button. Huge menu. I want to try everything now. Will definitely go for the boiled seafood bag that the table across from us had. It looked soooo good. But the food coming off the hibachi grill smelled incredible, so I may have to go for that. But I have to try the sashimi, after discovering how fresh their sushi is, right? I sure do love sashimi. Oh, decisions, decisions... For now - kudos to the sushi chefs! Good job!!! read more

The staff was friendly and helpful. I was disappointed in the food i received. I've eaten here in the past and had the same items that I ordered this time. Other than the flying fish roe rolls nothing was as good as it was the last time. There was no ginger dressing on the house salad or any dressing at all. The yum yum sauce looked and tasted like plain mayonnaise. The handroll that I ordered was made as small/normal rolls. I can only hope that this was due to the coronavirus and staffing problems related to the virus. read more

I enjoyed the sushi but my order of chicken hibachi did not come with my extra order of mushrooms. Since it was carryout, I did not realize my lack of mushrooms until I got home. Small town sushi sounded kinda of scary at first, but on a Sunday, you eat where the door is open. The waitress was a bit scattered- maybe new- but she was sweet and tried. My husband and I ordered rolls- a Cindy, Southern Miss, and a veggie. They were all very good and well presented. The Southern Miss has crawfish, which was yummy and fun for our southern visit. My parents had teriyaki chicken. It arrived looking very white and bland. Initially the rice was forgotten but after asking it arrived. Overall a better experience than expected. Food was beyond terrible. First, mushroom soup. One spoonful of salt water was enough for me. Next, salad piled with ginger dressing. Finally, the bento box a bowl dumped upside down for the rice. When she returned to clear the plates she said again she would check on my roll. 45 minutes after ordering I was told "the chef doesn't know how to make that roll". Told the server to just give us a check for what we had and she tried to charge me for the gin & tonic I didn't get. It's hard as a former server and as someone who has written about and eaten big town sushi for years to be overly critical... that being said, I've eaten here three times--once the upon which was a good serving and decently done, once for bento and today for take out sushi. First, I called and got put on hold immediately and stayed so for almost three minutes. I finally hung up and called back. Then I told the gal I just wanted a Dragon roll... just a quick order that's pretty universal. After giving them forty minutes (it's Mother's Day, after all) I came to pick up my order. I was completely ignored by the staff which seemed to consist of several teenagers congregated at the sushi bar talking. The one young man at the counter did offer to help, but only after I asked. My order was ready, but it was a California roll, with avacado. I asked for the manager and explained to her that I wanted a traditional dragon roll with raw fish or anything with tuna and salmon and I explained to her about the service I received. She apologized and gave me a spicy dragon roll which--for goodness sakes did not have one speck of raw fish or nori, which I love. It was cooked and crispy balls of minced fish. I pointed out my confusion and she said there was fish inside of it. Nope. It was cooked crab. There wasn't any salmon or tuna involved. I took the order. I wasn't about to cost that small restaurant three separate meals for $10. And it was really, really good. However, I get really tired of being served like a Redneck gingi. I know my hamachi. And I was on a diet and didn't want anything I had to guess at calorie wise. The young lady left at the bar was super nice and tried very hard to make sure I was okay, and it was appreciated. Plus, they didn't charge me for my Diet Coke, so that's nice. If you are an experienced sushi eater, please take your time and be careful how you order here. I will say it is the best sushi in town. The bento boxes are decent, unlike thier competitor up the road who's sloppy old, soggy fish not even cut properly is laughable. I'd say give them a try, but be specific in what you want. And for the owner: your staff should pay better attention when someone calls or walks in. The kids there didn't even look up, they were so busy talking to each other. read more

Decent food at best, the real problem is the service and management.. My girlfriend and I went for dinner the other night and got 2 entrees and mine came out cold and when I sent it back they said it would take 25-30 min to remake ( it was shrimp and rice) and we were the ONLY people in the place.. I told them to just cancel my order, they took the plate and refused to take it off the bill, ( I didn't even eat 1 full bite) I told them that wasn't right and they said they were going to call the police if I didn't pay for it.. I used to eat there sometimes but NEVER again.. The one in Hattiesburg is good though. The owner there even gave us a gift card to make up for the owners stupidity at the on in laurel. read more

Just awful. Abysmal service to say the least. First, our glass of water had a previous lipstick mark on the rim. The server didn't give us a new one until after our food came out. Secondly, our entree came out first....then soup...then salad (last two only because he forgot to bring it to us and I had to point it out). We were the ONLY guests in the restaurant. My boyfriend's teriyaki steak came out cold and very well done (instead of med-rare like it should be). Food was not good. Service makes the experience worse. Ya know when you think about sushi a small hole in the wall in the middle of Mississippi isn't exactly the first place that will pop into your head, but I was very impressed with this place. Did a late lunch and ordered way more food than 2 people should ever try to eat, but every bit of it was delicious. Fresh Sashimi sampler was fantastic and our server Emilee was more than attentive. If & when I ever make it back to Laurel MS I will be stopping by here again. read more

This place is disgusting. They have some of the nastiest facilities I've ever stepped in. I've seen the kitchen and seen how food is prepared. You have Asian men in the back smoking cigarettes while preparing food. During this crisis, I understand we have to make changes and do what we have to, but sake still has the most incompetent owners and employees. I've never been more disappointed in a restaurant. The salad has been brown every single time I've ate it. Speaking of salad, I have seen them use bare hands to reach into a fridge and grab the lettuce and throw in your bowl for you to eat. The owner should be utterly ashamed and should close her doors forever. I have witnessed roaches in this restaurant as well. I'm just disgusted and I can't take walking into this establishment anymore. I've gave them several chances but I will no longer, and I suggest for your health that you do the same. read more

Our family was thrilled when we no longer had to drive to Hattiesburg for Sake Cafe's extensive menu of sushi rolls and fresh ingredients. It's a local favorite in spite of one or two reviews who must have hit them on an off-night. We eat here no less than two to three times a month and have never had a poor experience. Favorites include their tender wok-friend calamari because it's served on a bed of spring greens. Toss it in the sweet chili sauce-based dressing and you can enjoy it for a meal. There are so many delicious rolls...The spicy sauce that accompanies the sweet Blossom Roll strikes a good balance of heat. The tempura shrimp inside the Sake 2 roll makes it another menu go-to. Other choices if you're looking for variety or a family-style sushi night include the Spice Girl with its fresh cilantro and red bell pepper as well as the Rainbow and Golden Eagle. You'll find the avocado always fresh and the tuna and salmon tasty. If rolls aren't your thing, their Dinners for 2 offer a lot of meal for the money. Two Flavor Shrimp and the Karuma Shrimp (the peanut sauce alone is worth it) top my list. Their affordable hibachi meals also appeal to those who shy from the sushi experience. Just can't recommend this place more highly. read more

Excellent service and food. Don't let the outside fool you (shopping center) because the food is delicious. I didn't get a chance to explore too much but the goat cheese gyoza with what I think was pureed manjo was awesome. Everything is priced very reasonably, and the appetizer portions are quite large.
