We were looking for a place to eat, and the ratings on this place look good right? We do love Asian. So we pull up at 7 o'clock on a Friday night and there are very few cars there. We walked up to the door and saw the nastiest gigantic fish tank that we've ever seen. This is a first. It was lime green and you could not see through the water. There was one sad decoration of a palm tree that was laying on its side at the bottom and you could just barely make it out and there were some big goldfish just sitting in this muck. We couldn't do it. I guess this review is for the restaurant. How can you possibly bring in customers with that at the door? Do you know how they say if a restroom is dirty that the kitchen might not be much better? This was worse. We didn't eat there. We did say afterword maybe they have the best food in town, but we could not get past that. read more

I've been to Yamatos in other cities on the coast of Mississippi, but this one has to be the best. My fiancée and I go at least twice a month and man do we love it. Mrs. Melissa is the best server in the restaurant and now we enjoy having her wait our table. My favorite meal is the chicken hibachi, which is cheap and fulfilling. We had a great server named Tia, she's a very nice young lady and catered to our every need, tip was well deserved hope she enjoyed it! My gf ordered the amazing roll and i ordered the habachi combo since we were there for lunch (lunch special 11-2) and it was advertised 100% angus farm raised beef prime etc. So I said why not I got the filet mignon medium rare cooked and the chefs did a wonderful job at giving me that medium rare. I was going to give this place a low rating just based on the taste and quality of their sushi....and then I got food poisoning!

Decided to try this location again. Ordered the sushi boat for two and the dragon roll. Everything was good. Forgot to take pictures this time....The roll was a little on the large size (more than a bite) but very tasty. We will try them again for dine in service. I didn't give 5 stars because I had to wait for the be ready and I had designated a pick up time for it. read more

My friends and I are new to the area and we decided to stop here to eat! Upon sitting down we ordered the crab Rangoon, which was very good and crispy. I ordered chicken fried rice and my friends a couple of rolls. The rolls were wonderfully plated and tasted alright. My rice came out and it was cold and bland. when I notified my server she asked if I wanted it REHEATED. As a server, You should never reheat cold food served to a table it needs to be remade. I've visited this place twice now in the couple of weeks and I can only echo what others have posted. The decor is very attractive and relaxing. Their wait staff and sushi chefs are very friendly and make great suggestions. The sushi, in presentation and variety, is like none other in Hattiesburg. Their hibachi is great and reasonably priced. I had filet mignon and scallops for a late lunch at $13.99. The scallops were perfect and the filet was very tender. Although, I'm a little disappointed I couldn't watch them make it. They have a setup to the left of the sushi bar but, there weren't any stools. My only critique on the food would be that because of the way the meat is cut, it comes out a little more done than what you order. I had my filet cooked medium and there were more than a few pieces nearly well done. Don't get me wrong, it still tasted great but, I should have gone with my gut on medium rare. read more

We got an ad in the mail for the grand opening of Yamato, and we decided to try it. It was AMAZING! The food itself was very good. Lots of variety, and the sushi tasted very fresh. (Note, although we didn't try it, the restaurant also offers Hibachi and some other dishes). The food was also beautiful; it was prepared in an artistic way that made us more exciting about eating it. The atmosphere was very nice as well. I've tried several Sushi places in Hattiesburg and will put Yamato at the top of the list. Sushi should not be a lot of rice, but instead should highlight the fish and other ingredients that make up the roll. I travel around the US and will put Yamato in the top two or three of places I have found for sushi. If you are in the area and like sushi this is he place you need to be.
