After Kumo's downfall, I've been desperately searching for a new place to call my sushi home. This was an absolutely befuddling experience. Let's just do a simple pros/cons of my chirashizushi. The good: 1. Very generous portions (thick cuts of fish) 2. Vibrant, but low key ambiance (good place for a date) 3. High quality ginger (not the nasty pink stuff) The bad: 1. 35 minutes for food 2. 4 pieces of imitation crab (cheating!!) 3. No sushi rice!! 4. Gasping for air (bad circulation) Let me explain Bad #3 and #5. I'm fairly certain they just used regular white rice instead of short-grain sushi rice. Sushi rice is supposed to stick together; this rice was falling apart. Furthermore, sushi rice should have a nice dose of rice vinegar-- this rice had no flavor. So... it wasn't chirashizushi I ate, but sashimi with white rice. To their credit, the fish was relatively fresh (certainly not as fresh as other reviewers have said). It has potential, and I may return to see what the chef has to offer on just straight sushi at the bar. I hope he uses sushi rice!!! read more

I've been to many Japanese steakhouses in my years, but Sakimura is probably my favorite, or at least tied as my favorite. The sushi is SO fresh, the ambiance of the restaurant is upbeat and modern, and the service is phenomenal. We've had our sushi in front of us in no longer than 10 minutes. The sushi bar is also a fun experience because it allows you to watch the sushi chefs create your delicious order, and they are PROS. I've also grown to love the friendliness of the staff. It doesn't take long for them to recognize you if you start to become a regular customer, as they began to recognize my boyfriend and I after only two visits. The other food aside from their sushi is also delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves sushi and a fun, friendly but also laid-back vibe. read more

With friendly service, lots of food, and a very nice atmosphere with the option of a hibachi grill. This place won my 5 Star review. When I walked in I actually went straight to the bathroom and it had a really cool faucet that dispensed water into a thin horizontal shape instead of a boring shower or cylinder shape. Okay who cares let's get to the food. I was seated promptly and started with an appetizer, the Beef Negimaki. It was pretty good but the cherry garnish threw me off but not in a bad way, just whoa there I'd save that for my ice cream. Then I decided to get a Bento Box for dinner. And I made the right decision. I got the Chicken Katsu Dinner Bento Box. You see Bento boxes usually are like a little sampler but not this one, they gave me a very generous amount of everything. Came with a Miso Soup and a salad to start me off nicely. Then my box came, I was actually surprised as I was not expecting so much food. The tempura consisted of shrimp, hefty pieces of tempura zucchini, sweet potatoes and even broccoli. It was cooked nicely and wasn't under seasoned. It also had a basic roll of Sushi l, I believe it was a California Roll I forget, anyways it came with ginger and Wasabi and was very nice. And also 4 pieces of not steamed but looks like pan-fried Shrimp Shumai and usually it's served steamed for me but fried is not half bad at all, very tasty. Now to the last component of my Bento Box Dinner, the Chicken Katsu. It wasn't burned or overcooked. It wasn't undercooked and soggy. It was perfect. It comes with a sauce and oh yeah also came with white rice. This box was well worth 21$ for me. My father ordered beef fried rice and from what I had of it, it was very good as well. Also had mini corn in it. In the end, I was stuffed and still had lots of food to take home. The waitor was nice, the management was friendly, the atmosphere was pretty, and people started to pour in during dinner very quickly. I just loved the atmosphere as it was buzzing, clean and even people were constantly coming in and out for Japanese take out. I don't know any Japanese Restaurant that's been that busy with take out period. I've only been here once so I don't guarantee this experience but from what I experienced here, this place deserves a 5 Star Review. Tip: If you're starving, I highly recommend this place. I recommend the crazy tuna roll, pink lady roll, and y2k roll. Their hibachi friend rice is my favorite in town.

Christmas Day dinner. The sushi was very fresh and that's really all you need from a good sushi restaurant. I posted a picture to show what I ordered. I was especially happy they had uni. This is reason enough to come here every day! read more

I was sorry we went for my son's birthday. They told us 6 pm and I was there at quarter of. there was no room to wait inside and too hot to wait outside so the rest of the party waited in the car and at 2 minutes of they told us we could come in so i texted everyone to come in and they did, we still had to wait another 10 minutes to be seated and they started the other side of the table first and did not start our 'show' at the hibachi until 7. We didn't get out till 8 and it was awful as we had 3 small kids with us , which they knew as they asked with the reservation. The "steak" was tough and had gristle and fat in it and not a very large portion, considering the price. My husband and I went to eat here for our anniversary. We sat at a regular table, not at the hibachi side. The hibachi dinner we ordered was good, the sushi was average. It sounds fancy when reading the menu, but was so-so at best. Also, the one extremely annoying factor as to why I would never eat here again is that they rush you in and out. After I literally sat down and looked at the menu for 30 seconds the waitress asked me for my order. I asked her to give us a few minutes and she sat there in front of me watching me look at it. Food came out only after maybe 6-7 minutes. They were already cleaning our plates and table after 15 minutes of getting there. I noticed this was happening to other customers around me. They obviously only care about how many people they can get in and out, not about their customers enjoying the atmosphere, food and their company. read more

A decent sushi restaurant, about as I expected. Was a little off put by the fact that it was in a strip mall but it ended up being ok. The food took a bit to come out even though the restaurant wasn't that crowded. Overall, the sushi was pretty decent, not the best though. False advertising: I visited a month before my nine year old's birthday to speak with the manager regarding having a birthday party there. I specifically chose this location because of the information given on the website (there is hibachi closer to my home). I was told I was all set. I called a week before and also the day before to confirm that it was a birthday party. The girls enjoyed their food, but there were no special deserts or party favors given to my daughter or her friends. We were treated like any other patrons of the restaurant. Servers were somewhat inattentive and I had to tell them several times that it was her birthday so they would sing to her. I had to order ice cream separately. When I asked for ice cream for the rest of the girls, they brought out one dish to share per pair of girls. False advertising. From the website: "Kids up to 12 usually pick one of our Hibachi packages that include a menu with three price fix options, a great flaming show, special desserts and Sakimura party favors for everybody. I've been waiting for Saki Mura to open for aaaaaages. They mocked me with their "Sushi & Hibachi - Coming Soon!" banner for months on end, and finally they opened this past month. FINALLY, a sushi place that's practically right in my own backyard. Only downer? I just decided to become a vegetarian, so my once-favourite food is now morally and ethically off-limits in my mind. But thank goodness it's not just a sushi bar. I was very impressed with the decor -- I guess all those months of hard work and construcion paid off. The sushi bar is shaded by this gorgeous (fake) tree that is built into the decor, floor-to-ceiling, and looks to be growing out of the floor. The backsplash of the sushi bar was polished black river rocks. All dark furniture. The whole place just looked really elegant and inviting. The staff was very kind, and super attentive, and super sweet. I got the Tofu Teryaki, which was delicious. It came with miso soup and a garden salad - both of which were tasty as well. My date got a variety of different kinds of sushi, and he said they were fresh and wonderful. I hate to do this to a place that seems to have won this town over,....but it just was soooo blah that I sobbed in my $30 hibachi rice(rice i ate about two bites of). First off, this review is based strictly off of the hibachi, NOT the sushi. The few customers that were there, seemed to enjoy it. but of course this is coming from someone that didn't try any of it. A buddy and I on business popped in here on a Wednesday night around 8:30. Yelp reviews were very good. I was very excited. The place felt dead. Only two other tables, the place was eerily quiet, and the between the wait staff, the sleeping host? (maybe owner?), and the two sushi chefs just staring straight ahead....where I happend to be in direct line of site creeped me the hell out. Just a weird vibe. We both ordered the $28 hibachi with filet mignon and scallops. Scallops tasted ok, they were sliced into slivers, never had it this way, never hope to again. I want a big meaty "filet of the sea" as I like to call my scallops. No crusting on them either, just limp slices, but not TERRIBLE, just ok. Now for the reason I gave them a 2 instead of a 3.....the "filet". I use the quotes because I'm willing to bet ANYTHING that was NOT a piece of filet mignon. NO WAY, COULDN"T BE, NEVER. It was actually worse than what i'd expect if I had ordered a top sirloin steak hibachi. It just was BAD. I think the late night chefs just hated us for ordering hibachi when they were a mere 1.5 hrs from closing. I felt ripped off. i KNOW it wasn't filet. Of Course I won't be back. This is my new favorite sushi joint in CT, hands down! I found this place because everyone at my yoga studio (my favorite place in CT, dharma yoga in Meriden) was raving about it. I had been looking for a new sushi joint ever since I got sick of the hit-or-miss sushi of Sonobana (my ex-favorite). As a Japanese, I'm very picky when it comes to sushi. And snobby, very snobby. I don't write reviews until I eat nigiri because even though I love rolls, too, I don't consider rolls real sushi. I know, I said I'm snobby! Long story short, I loved the nigiri. Perfect amount of spacing between the rice, perfect size fish, perfect temperature fish/rice. The presentation was beautiful. I got the sushi dinner the second time I was there. They gave me spicy tuna roll because I told them I like spicy things (you don't get to choose the roll). The special rolls were yummy--try the Spicy Lovers, if you're into spicy rolls. I practically grew up eating teppenyaki. My first experience was as a wee lad in Benihana's. Since then, I have sampled scores of restaurants like this in close to a dozen cities. I have seen so many flaming "smiley faces" on a grill...so many faces... Oh right, back to the review. In terms of formula, they score points for execution. Flaming oil smiley face...check. Onion and oil volcano...with little peeing fireman statue to put it out...check. Tossing cut vegetables into our mouths like we're trained seals...check. And so on. High point: - The personality of the cook - very fun and entertaining - The fried dumplings were good Middle points: - The tempura appetizer was all right; pretty heavy on the batter, though Low points: - The fried rice needs more flavor and complexity - They served us two large servings of starch, both rice and noodles; could use more veggies and meat in lieu of that - The noodles were really simple and uninviting; I estimate 80% of the noodles on the table were left uneaten - The shrimp and chicken were rubbery and lacking in flavor, a bit overcooked - The service was inconsistent and slow - There were some serious language barriers with ordering, even things like "vodka and tonic" required repeating Weird, going into this I had three stars, but I guess it really should be two now that I tally the points... read more

I've been to a few hibachi places around the state, and Sakimura has always been my favorite. It's also one of the best places for sushi takeout, with great lunch specials that are a better value than other sushi restaurants in the area. Noodles aren't listed in the hibachi menu, but for years, our hibachi dinners have included noodles on top of the meat we order, fried rice, two shrimp tempura, vegetables, soup, and salad, which are all listed on the menu under hibachi dinners. I'm always waiting for the day when they don't give us noodles, but I'm pleasantly surprised when we get all that food with our orders. It's happened every time I've gone and as recently as last week. The hibachi chefs are entertaining as always, and the food is great - in both quality and quantity. I always leave with delicious leftovers, which make perfect late-night snacks or breakfast the next day. Sakimura gets 5 stars from me because it's not only the best hibachi I've been to but because of the sushi and takeout. If I don't feel like spending a lot of money going out for sushi, or I'm not hungry enough for all-you-can-eat sushi at other places, the lunch specials here are a great deal, and the sushi is good. As my boyfriend and I were trying to enjoy the dinning, they were constantly trying to rush us out by asking if we were ready to pay every 5 minutes even when we were still in the middle of our dinner. Hubby and I decided to eat here before a show at the Oakdale since it's only 7 minutes away and had great reviews on Yelp. We're not sure why, because it was really unimpressive. We shared the vegetable and pork gzoya, both of which were very greasy on the outside, though the filling was tasty. Hubby got a few different sushi rolls that were OK, but nothing phenomenal. He ordered a plum wine, which should be very sweet, and tasted like wine vinegar. I ordered a noodle dish that came with a salad and miso soup and, after I'd been served dinner, realized I never got the salad or soup and had to ask for them. No one cleared our dishes and the manager walked by and dropped the check on the table, without ever asking if we wanted dessert. This is why we try new places: sometimes we find a winner, sometimes not. This was definitely the latter. read more

I couldn't review Iron Chef, recommend Sakimura and then not write a review. So here it is. Whereas Iron Chef is poor all around in food, service and price, Sakimura is average in all three areas. I think this place has an identity crisis as some times the sushi is amazing and the hibachi sucks while other times the hibachi is awesome and the sushi sucks. This is a place where reservations are a must especially on the weekends. Know in advance if you're going to do hibachi or just get sushi and they'll seat you accordingly. The sushi is meh. It's decent, the rolls aren't sloppily made but I've never gotten sick from them which is a huge plus. It's just not stand out quality. The hibachi is better than Iron Chef hands down and the portions are a bit bigger. It's also not as salty as Iron Chef. The service is why this place will never be four stars. It is sloooooooow. Really slooooow. Whether you're there on a Tuesday night, Saturday evening or Friday afternoon, this place will not hustle and keep it moving. Annoying kid alert: Families in this area seem to think this place is a playground for their children on Friday and Saturday evening. If you plan on getting a buzz on just maintain some sobriety to where you can artfully dodge the children racing around. Tip: If you're not into the hibachi experience but don't want a bunch of cold sushi either, order some appetizers. They're really good and sometimes better than the hibachi itself. Parking also tends to be limited during the evening hours, you could park in the Response Insurance lot and walk over. read more

I come once or twice a month on Friday after the gym. I haven't been to the hibachi side yet. I usually sit at the sushi bar. The sushi chefs are fun to watch and always pleasant. I have always enjoyed the sushi, sashimi as well as the rolls. The fish is fresh and flavorful. The service is good and the prices are reasonable. Dazzling decor, there's a fake tree inside, When it comes to sushi, the chefs really take pride. The hibachi crew was really giving their all, I had a very nice dinner in this lil' strip mall. Came on a Saturday night for dinner. The parking lot was full and the line was out the door, but there were several open tables in the dining area. Turns out all of the people in the waiting area were waiting for hibachi, and for good reason: the hibachi chefs knew how to entertain. I saw one of them light the top of his hat on fire...talk about showmanship. Ordered some appetizers and sushi for our meal. The Rocky Shrimp was bigger than Jumbo Shrimp...they were more like Dumbo Shrimp (because Dumbo is an elephant and elephants are really big?) They were big, crispy, and the sauce was tangy and tasty. The sushi was very fresh and the prices were pretty average. I got a Spicy Lover Roll and Godzilla Roll and devoured them both. The decor was very warm and cozy including a giant artificial Japanese Maple overhanging the sushi bar. There was also a nice, big bar, but there were no chairs around the bar. Seemed like they were trying to utilize the space to fit more dining tables instead- makes sense. Our waitress didn't smile at us the entire night and kept kind of disappearing. Saki!! I made it a point to hit up Sakimura whenever I'm in Meriden. The lunch Bento Box is a really great deal: soup AND salad, sushi roll, three shumai, meat and rice for $11! That's a crazy good deal. I've had beef, shrimp and chicken teriyaki. Vegetable and Chicken tempura. Yakisoba...you get the picture. Never was anything bad. Now, that isn't saying it was incredible, but it was good. Decor is charming. Effort was definitely put in to making this place look and feel Japanese. There's a small wall that separates the dining area with the hibachi section. On the wall there's a fake (but pretty) tree that touches the ceiling and hangs down over part of the dining area. Everything has a clean look to it. I've only done the hibachi once, but it was memorable. I was there at around 5pm, 6 people at the table and the cook had a ton of energy. He made some really funny Japanese stereotype jokes, shot alcohol from like 10 feet away into our mouths and more. The service has always been impeccable. I've been here probably over a dozen times and have never had my water go empty, or an empty bowl left on the table for more than like 2 minutes. They've always been very nice and food typically came out quickly. Why not less stars? The combination of everything I just mentioned. I've brought family and friends here and they've all enjoyed it...so it's not just my slow mind thinking here. I have always enjoyed the hibachi here. It all depends on who you get as to how much you will enjoy the experience. No offense but it does matter how much English the chef speaks, or how confident he is with his English-speaking ability. I have gone on dates, double-dates, brought friends & family here, including my toddler. Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed it. My Dad still talks about our dining experience from here years ago! The service always has been consistently good. Food is solid, and I really like the ambiance. Since dining with our daughter can be challenging right now, it has been some time since I've dined here, as this is a great place to go to sit and enjoy your meal. But I would highly recommend Sakimura to someone who may be contemplating going there. read more

I'm baffled as to why so many meh reviews! My 6 year old wanted sushi, and since we were close by already, we went here. They accommodated his pickiness by bringing him hibachi noodles with no meat - and came out within 5 minutes of our ordering it. They were really delicious, too. He ate the entire plate - and he's one of those children who has major food issues and basically eats nothing in restaurants. I've had sushi from several places in central CT, and every single one of them had me waiting at least 25 minutes (and some even longer!). Not here. I ordered 4 rolls - oshinko, sweet potato, spicy tuna and yellowtail scallion. They came within 10 minutes later and were fantastic. The presentation was not as fancy as some I've seen, but they were far more delicious than other local places. The rice wasn't soggy or dry, fish texture was firm and fresh, and were relatively substantial in size. It was a week night, and the place was moderately busy - there was a full hibachi table of maybe 6 people, and a couple tables filled in the sushi bar area. Nonetheless, we didn't have to chase wait staff; our waitress was attentive. My only gripe about this place is the lack of parking - we were lucky to get a spot, but I can imagine on a weekend you'd end up walking from the urgent care lot next door. read more

Have eaten here plenty of times before as well as take-out multiple times. Always pleasant both hibachi and non-hibachi sides while dining in. Scorpion bowls are great! This experience was for take-out. Hibachi dishes always wonderfully separated for customer. Sashimi was huge cuts of fish. Miso excellent and flavorful. Maki was appropriate/par for the course, real win is the lunch maki combos (any 2 rolls for $8? plus soup and salad-salads provided are huge with ginger dressing on side). Wonderful experience. Went in a group for my sister's birthday and sat around the hibachi table, though I didn't actually get any hibachi. I ordered sushi and while it was good, nothing was really spectacular and it was a little overpriced compared to other sushi restaurants I've been to. LOVE this place!!! We have done the hibachi and also just ordered from the regular menu and have not been disappointed. The veggie tempura is AWESOME and seriously has to be my favorite! The California rolls are also bangin'!!! Miso soup, chicken/shrimp hibachi and the house dressing are all GREAT! I cannot complain about anything! The guys who do the hibachi are fun and the servers are all great. And FYI ask for double the alcohol in your drinks...we have never gotten charged more...AWESOME!!!! I have to say that before I tried Saki Mura I thought there were no decent options for Japanese food in Wallingford / Meriden. Glad I stopped here! I ate here on a Sunday where they have a special that if you order a specified "special" roll you can order a specified "regular" roll for only $1. There is a menu which lists all your choices and it was pretty decent. We ordered two very tasty special roles and two $1 rolls. Great bargain! Wallingford doesn't seem to have many decent restaurants unless you love nasty places like Chili's and Crapplebarfs. Glad to know I can go to Saki Mura and order some tasty sushi prior to going to a movie. It's only 5 minutes or less down the road from Holiday Cinemas. Next time I will try the hibachi because the food looked and smelled delicious. read more

Arrived at 10pm craving for sushi. Based on some of the reviews I read on Yelp, I thought I will give Sakimura a try. I am currntly sitting at the sushi bar. While I wait for my food let me share my thoughts on first impression. I am a bit dissapointed on the over-all cleanliness. It could have been busy before I arrived, but that's no excuse. So with that said cleanliness is an opportunity. Ok sushi arrived and I took a picture of my order. I order a spicy white tuna roll, eal roll and a 2 tuna. The eal and spicy white tuna roll was really good. However, the 2 tuna was not the best. I had better. Though it was closing time at 11pm, I really did not order anything else due to the fact the sushi bar was putting away the fish/sushi.
