Really enjoy the weight room. Nicely setup. The machines they have are older, but in my honest opinion I like it better than the Nautilus equipment that is in most other commercial gyms. The newer equipment feels more awkward to me. All metal dumbbells that just feel right. I really dig it. The only thing I would add is a hack squat machine. Sauna room is great. Down to earth kind of gym. One of my favorite gyms in the area. I've tried out three others. read more

The worst gym I have ever been in, the bathrooms and locker rooms are very out dated and dirty and smell of strong urine .. the weight room is like a dungeon with very old and broken equipment. The floors are always dirty, would not Recommend this gym to anybody. read more

I have been visiting the Salem Athletic Club several times this month and am on the fence if to purchase a membership here. ($25 month). What makes me hesitant is the cleanliness, or lack thereof. The place really needs to be scrubbed clean! The men's locker room, showers, hot tub, are just downright filthy. The cardio room is dusty, and the entire place can use a update (looks like mid 90's since the last time things were painted and re-modeled). The price of the membership is a good deal, which includes the pool and all classes offered. read more

I signed up for the 7 day free trial and did my first workout today! I really like it. It's super clean, doesn't seem to get crowded and there's a lot of variety! The girl at the front who signed me up and gave me a tour was super nice and answered all my questions, I think Savannah was her name. They have a new owner and he's apparently continuing to upgrade everything so I was told it should continue to keep getting better and better! My bf is also planning on signing up too! I have been coming here on and off since I was 16 years old...so for twenty years this has been the example of a great gym that I hold all other gyms up to. What can I say? There are tons of class styles, they love Les Mills, and the instructors (especially Maureen) are the reason I keep coming back! This gym is the reason I became an instructor myself! I love their Young at Heart program that gives people a place to stay healthy and have fellowship with other people their age. Every time you walk in to the gym, you smell fresh brewed coffee and while I don't drink coffee, it is a welcoming smell. They try to stay updated and make renovations to the gym based on current trend and member needs and that is important! This really is the model for what a gym should be like and I am so grateful that I can always get a guest pass when I am in town for a day or a week!! Oh and did I mention that it is local owned so it is not one of those big shops that don't know their members names, this gym cares about you and your health!!! You should check them out! read more

I would say this is not a fancy gym. But the reasons I chose it after comparing both gyms in this area is 1) Price is 40% cheaper, and very transparent and fair instead of "sales" callback techniques 2) People are locally friendly and care. Front desk are willing to stop what they are doing and spend time talking to you; 3) Have the facility that should have, including pool, racquet ball and classes. And they have potential to keep upgrading. But if you are looking for a trendy gym (with rock climbing) just to work out, probably Work out club is better choice. read more

Tried to book a birthday party here for the pool. It looked like it would be a lot of fun but communication for booking is terrible. I only received one email back after trying a few times stating issues with email, and then again never heard back after asking if the date I was looking for would be available. I am just disappointed in the booking system for the pool parties for a 10 year old. read more

I've been coming here for 8 years or so. They have a lot of classes which I really like. I do not work nearly as hard on my own outside of a class experience. They have a lot of Les Mills oriented classes (Body Flow, Body Pump, etc.) They also have Zumba which is very popular. Weight and exercise equipment. And very friendly instructors. Ironically I have also made very good friends with a lot of members there. Totally not what I'd expected. They also have childcare and a lot of child oriented programs which I have used in the past. read more

So far so good. I recently signed up after switching from WCWC. I am wary of gyms having any of my financial information as it makes me feel like I'm about to go bankrupt through an accidental billing problem at any moment. What is it with gyms and billing that they can't get correct? I do like the aquatics classes here, the schedule and class fitness programs. I don't like the whirlpool, lack of it by the pool, or the layout of the gym. Overall the gym is small and antiquated and nothing like WCWC that I am used to. However WCWC was billing at even worse (incorrect) rates, and was unable to fix it in their system or uninterested in doing so. I mainly use a pool to swim and work out, I would say 95% of the time so this was really the only place I could find in the area with a pool. Do I like it? It's not a gym I would choose to join if there were other options, but it's not necessarily bad either, just kind of eh... read more

Wish they would turn on the heat in the winter. The place is too dark at night especially the parking lot. They can use a smoothy bar where you can sit down and get an energy drink after a workout. I have to admit though the place is nice and clean. read more

I've been a member of the Salem Athletic Club for 2 years now. Really enjoy the pool aerobics, weight room and the comfortable atmosphere.

I love the swim aerobics classes 〰They also have a wide range of other classes. The coaches in the swim aerobics class are so friendly and helpful as well a great teaching . I recently visited, as I was thinking of rejoining. It was sad to see how bad the place looks. The place is dirty and truly behind the times. It was almost depressing to see. I was shocked! Really a shame, great space and location. The locker room was so dirty and abandoned looking, the sauna was broken and whirlpool empty (dangerous). The parking lot is dark and the feeling of risking my car to being broken into. Just disappointing! Remodel or sell the place. read more

After years of attending as a family we canceled our membership because the gym is just plain filthy. The reason we stayed was for a select few instructors who are top notch, but even they disgusted. Upon canceling after 3 years of monthly dues and annual fees we still got charged $200 in bogus charges for canceling "off cycle". These folks are out for money, and care not for client satisfaction. No evening classes (after 6pm) for commuters and the early AM classes mean I would need to shower there- something I'm not willing to sacrifice my health to do. Annual maintenance fees paid each year did not go to updating equipment or available group classes. Disappointing to say the least. read more

I'm in my second year of membership at SAC. I like that the organized exercise classes are taught by dedicated, fitness professionals. They have a great aquatics program (water aerobics, masters swim, lessons) and I've never had an issue finding times to lap swim. They also have a spin room and racquetball courts with league play. Additionally, they offer sound wellness programs and personal or group training. The club is older in terms of paint and structure, however, I go to exercise not to look at the decor. If you're looking for 'trendy', go somewhere else. If you're looking for fitness at a great price, come here. The club is friendly, has great group exercise offerings and is great for those who are goal focused. read more

" I don't hate going to the gym anymore". I have found that SAC is just what i need to get myself on track for getting back into shape. As a 50+ year old woman, I don't find the gym intimidating like other gyms. The staff are very friendly as well as the other members. I am not taking any classes , just mostly cardio and the weight room, maybe someday i will try a class out. I actually look forward to the end of my workday so i can "head to the gym" read more

I've been going to the Salem Athletic Club since 2001 and I love the "family friendly " feeling about the staff. There always seems to be something broken there. As of yesterday, the whirlpool has not worked since JUNE. The locker room is poorly heated. The people that work there are nice but they really do seem to be letting it run down. read more

My child took swimming lessons here and I wasn't impressed. Facility was run down and the instructor was rude and didn't even seem like she wanted to be there. We will be looking elsewhere. read more

I was a member for 3 years, than became an employee in the rev. room for about a year. While working there I became pregnant and pretty ill, so I put my 2 weeks in and wanted to just re-enroll and continue my membership. I have never been treated with such disrespect by Moreen( shes Supposivley in charge of membership, not to be mistaken with Moreen the instructor) She tried to tell me I had to pay another registration fee on top of my membership and yearly dues, although I never stopped being a member. If the gym is going to screw over their own employees you know for a fact they don't care about the members. The management needs to learn customer service as well as respect. I now attend work out world in Londonderry, it's cheaper and cleaner!! read more
