I really am big on support locally-owned small businesses, but I drive 15 minutes out of my way to go to a big box store. Why? Sure, the selection is limited. The prices are higher, typical of a small business. But what really sets this business apart is it's scary owner. I mean, the man is strapped with sometimes three guns on him, which frightened the crap out of my kid. He's not welcoming, meaning you have to hunt him down to try to get some help, and hope he is not gossiping with one of his buddies. There are strange and sometimes vulgar signs placed on the store shelves. Who owns a business rarely effects where I shop. I mean, the founder of Home Depot is a right wing extremist, too. I don't mind shopping there. The difference is the owner of Salem Hardware is the employee you are most likely to encounter, and you may not have a positive interaction with him. The owner goes way above and beyond to be helpful. He will cut things to fit, lend equipment, and probably weld thing for you if you needed it. Quiet but extremely helpful guy. Old style neighborhood hardware store you don't find anymore in most communities. I will go there first every time. read more

We recently moved to Anderson after living in Delhi most of our lives. I always try to support local business when I can. This store is reminiscent of stores of the past that are part of the neighborhood. The owner is not always free to assist but helps when available. I moved to a neighborhood within walking distance of this store and do lots of house and auto projects - and I'm always on the lookout for opportunities to support other local businesses. I wish I could support this one. I've been in Salem Hardware three times, and I've had the same experience each time: The guy behind the counter (owner, I presume) asked what I was doing there, nods vaguely towards a shelf that might have what I'm looking for, and goes back to what he was doing. My second visit I began browsing after finding what I needed and he yelled back, asking what I was up to. It's never been a bustling place when I've been in, so I don't know if he wants folks to get what they need and get out, or what, but from his barking part locations and his suspicious squints I got a pretty strong sense he didn't want folks to linger. I never came in close to opening or closing hours, and I always paid cash, so I don't know what I did as a customer to offend the guy. I'd give him another chance, but I'd have to stop in when I don't have my kids in tow; they're old enough to read, and while I'm politically ambivalent, the vulgarity on many of his signs would teach them most of the words from George Carlin's list of things you can't say on TV. read more

I stood at the counter for minutes without a glance. I was trying to find liquid nails, finally after 15 minutes i aimlessly meandered around the store and found it. Once at checkout I was created with a hand for cash or a card, no hi, hello, how's it going. If I wanted this type of service I'd go to Home Depot or lowes to get a better price and better service. If looking for a "TOOL" ask for Steve. What a zero when it comes to personality. Customer service also a zero. I lived on Beacon St for over 25 years. I always enjoyed going here for the friendly service. I continued going here because we all need to support the little guy. He was very rude to me but I was the bigger man because he is very small. He easily told me that home depot was right down the street. After explaining my frustration with his lack of intelligence, my Mom explained how my late father was asked to never return to his store, years ago, because my Dad interrupted his 5 minute phone call to ask for assistance. Being new to the area and a guy that loves old time hardware stores Salem Hardware hit the mark. Unlike the big box stores you can actually buy the 1 nut that was missing from your new Chi-Comm swing set. I try to support these old time hardware stores whenever I can...really a part of America that is just....cool. Crammed from floor to ceiling with a really, really big assortment of everything any homeowner could need, this place will see alot of me when I tackle those 4 trip to the hardware store plumbing projects. Not sure what all the negative reviews are all about. I've been in this store numerous times and I've always been able to find what I need. When I had any trouble, I was always given help. Perfect example: I was looking for a lawn mower air filter for my 10+ year old cub cadet walk behind about a week ago. The owner showed me where the filters were and helped me search for it. We couldn't find one so he walked me next door to the lawn repair shop and searched through their inventory. They didn't have the part either so he took the part number and my contact info and added my specific part to his next order which is being delivered this week. Doesn't get any better than that! The selection is large, prices are fair and love the service. Will continue to shop here and hope others give it a chance too. read more

Stopped at this 65 year old hardware store near where I grew up because I needed some mounting screws for a 19" TV that my son uses to play video games on long car rides. I remember coming here as a kid so I figured it would be a nice walk down memory lane. The guy, who didn't seem to want to interact with me, was just the right amount of unhelpful...minding his own business, and did not bother leaving the cash register counter. Good! If I need help I'll ask. He let me leave my tiny 19 inch tv on the counter and let me know that I needed metric screws on the left side of the aisle instead of the ones on the right. The ones I needed (4mm) were in one of those removable slide out boxes with little compartments for different size fasteners. It was higher than the top of my head, making it impossible to see what was inside. So, I carefully removed the box and carried it up front to test the different lengths in my tv mounting holes. At this point he tells me I should not have taken the box out because people drop them. I said that yes, I understood and that I would be careful. I tested several screws and found the right ones. Seeming annoyed, he took the box back to its place. When he returned, I explained that the box has to be removed in order to see what's inside because it was up high, higher than my head. He said I should have reached up. I explained that it's impossible to blindly reach up and select a screw without seeing what's inside each of the 10-12 compartments. He was getting more and more irritated. Oh well, it was hot and it smells like chemicals in that store so I chalked it up to a personality clash...until I saw the sign. It shocked me so much that I went to my car to get my phone and take a picture. After I snapped the photo, and was walking out, the guy said, "Get used to it." What a jerk. I'm including the photo with this review. As a previous reviewer stated, I would drive hundreds of miles or order things online rather than support this business ever again. read more

It's funny to be in the store and listen to the people say that they went everywhere else and they always end-up at Salem. Great Hardware Store! Everything we needed this weekend to fix the plumbing in my daughter house. I could not imagine having to drive back and forth on Ohio Pike to Union Township only to be disappointed. Lowes did refer us to Salem Hardware. read more

I would give this store no stars if I could. The owner routinely has offensive signs up. The last time my husband was in the store the owner was telling a customer that he recommends "armor piercing bullets" for when we need to fight the army. At one point he had an incredibly racist sign in his window. I called and said in a very respectful way that I found the sign offensive as did my neighbor's and that we didn't feel comfortable shopping there while the sign was up. He said "Good. Opens late most days. Every time I come by at 10am it takes 5-10 minutes for someone to show up.

They have a LOT of hard-to-find hardware items for such a small store, and the owner instantly knows where whatever you are looking for is. Very knowledgeable. read more

The convenience of this store beats battling Beechmont traffic any day. The owner is very knowledgeable, and keeps up on the latest hardware, gadgets, and firearms. I find that they have more fasteners and hard-to-find items than some of the big box stores. read more

This is a real hardware store, been shopping there for years, not some big corporate box store where nobody really knows anything about the hardware they sell, this is a store that has all the hard-to-find items that you just can't get anywhere. If not in stock, I've seen the owner get online and order things online for people that didn't have the inclination to do so themselves and you just don't find that kind of service anymore. With all that said, this is not a place to go if you need to be coddled, this isn't a place for whiny, girlie boys, this is a place where men shop for tools and hardware if you need a hug and a warm batch of cookies, go home to your mommy. The owner is more concerned with spreading his political agenda than running his business. I am always needing little odds and ends. This store would be perfect for those needs. Unfortunately, the service here is so abysmall, I wont set foot in here. Any time I have asked questions, I am met with unhelpful stares. I am convinced that the owner grasped his gun inside his jacket during one interaction (to be fair, my project clothes made me look homeless). Even if I am mistaken about the gun incident, its unprofessional to have bumper stickers with threats directed at your customers behind the register. I am sure I will receive a reply to this review with some name calling and some bragging about 61 years in business. I'm sure this place was great in 1954, but you have to take proactive steps to be a competitive business in 2014. As a fellow small business owners, I'd love to support this store, but I can't. read more
