With One Brick, you get your free sign up on their website (no spam ever) and you check the monthly calendar to RSVP to the events you're interested in. They cap off the number of volunteers according to how many are needed for each event. I appreciate this since I hate going to volunteer and standing around not contributing because there are too many cooks in the kitchen. My only qualm is that you can only sign up two weeks ahead of time for their events. I'd prefer to sign up for everything at the beginning of the month. But I assume they do this because it's rare for a NYCer to be able to commit more than two weeks out. Their method surely minimizes cancellations/no-shows. That being said, they're really awesome about understanding your need to cancel, even if it's last minute due to work or the unexpected. They also make it very easy for you to email the person in charge of your event in case you have questions or need to cancel.

This Bronx warehouse is one of their "Storehouses", a donation distribution center where donated goods are received, sorted, stored, and ultimately given away to the individuals and communities that World Vision serves. I signed up to volunteer with a group on a Saturday. Upon arrival we watched a short video about the mission of World Vision, and then got to work in the warehouse organizing personal hygiene kits that were to be given away to local homeless men. Everything was very organized and the World Vision staff made it very easy for us to get right to work. When we'd depleted one palette of soap or shampoo, another one was right behind it. The task was rather tedious but good conversation, jokes, and a shared feeling that what we were doing was important and meaningful kept us going through the afternoon. It was hot in the warehouse, of course, but there was a big fan and no complaints from the group. We all had a great time and it was worth the sweat. I would recommend World Vision to any small group or an individual looking for a volunteer project. The only real downside (if you can even call it that) is that because you are working in a warehouse of donated goods, there is no direct contact with the people you are ultimately serving. If you appreciate that face-to-face contact, this might not be the volunteer project for you. On the other hand, though, it allowed us all to talk a lot and I walked away with some new friends.

Some of the services Gilda's Club chapters offer are support and networking groups, lectures, workshops and social events in a nonresidential, homelike setting. The club was named in honor of the original Saturday Night Live cast member Gilda Radner who died of ovarian cancer in 1989. For those of you that are too young to remember, her husband was also one of my favorite comedians Gene Wilder. He was devastated upon her death. I'm doing this review to make this wonderful not for profit known. I don't hear about it as much on the news. If you are in need this is one more place you may want to contact. I'm recommending.
