    Mutton Biryani
    Fahad N.

their biryani is the real deal! Great Pakistani food with authentic taste and warm hospitality. Came on a Wednesday afternoon and were greeted by the friendly staff; ordered the mango lassi, mutton biryani, chicken curry, naan, and kulfi, and all were delicious. Would definitely come back again!

So, I hate to be the outlier here, but....yeah. So with all the glowing reviews, I left the Northwest Regional Library in search of some Indian food. There are quite a few choices up and down Sample Rd., but this place had the best reviews along with very reasonable prices, so I was all in. I arrive at Salma's and it was empty inside, save a woman in the back praying. Although the door has chimes on it that announced my arrival, I waited patiently, because who am I to interrupt communication between a mortal and the Almighty, in whatever incarnation she believes. So I waited. The woman got up and began doing something in the back. And still I waited. Finally, she came out and looked at me as if I was some kind of interloper in her place of business. "Do you want something?" she asked me. She wasn't being rude but she wasn't being friendly either. In hindsight, I should have just left right then, but instead I thought, "Okay, maybe she didn't hear the chime on the door when I entered, so let me give her the benefit of the doubt." I smiled and said that yes, I did indeed wanted something, specifically some biryani! Once I smiled, she lightened up and I ordered the mutton (goat). Our interaction after that was swift and I left to enjoy it at home. Now I have eaten Indian food all over this great land of ours, and I must say, the mutton was delicious, if not meager in its portion size. However, the biryani was NOT up to par in comparison to any of the other places where I have had it, be it in DC, Virginia Beach, Vegas or Northern California. Thank God I asked for the yogurt to accompany it. Maybe she was having an off day, or maybe she scraped my food off the bottom of somewhere or maybe the food just isn't as good as most people made it out to be. Whatever the case, I won't return.

Small inside, only a couple of tables

I don't believe that this place has been open for years but I only found it. I love Indian/Pakistani food since I spent years in the UK. This is a take out place with only a couple of tables. It is very homie and prices are amazing. Food here is really tasty, the Biryanis are mixed with slow-cooked meat that dissolves in your mouth. Spices are not overpowering, just right. They do not have a tandoori oven, which is the only drawback.

Chicken biriyani was good but it didn't have an Egg. It was only rice and chicken. Expected more.

Since Maharaja seemed to be the only Indian place nearby, we figured they got their snacks there. The eatery offers indoor and outdoor dining. And the decor is eclectic and cool. We were the only ones in the restaurant for a while on a Sunday at lunchtime, but soon we were joined by other diners. And like the passengers in the car, they, too, were South Asian. To me, this was a great sign. Our server was extremely polite. And she asked several times if the food was good and if we needed anything. We also got complimentary Indian crackers before our meals. And were given free warm cheese balls for dessert. We ordered the goat korma and the lamb maharaja, both medium spicy, for our meals. The goat was tender but the korma sauce was creamier than expected and a bit sweet with actual bits of raisins. The lamb maharaja was spicier than a medium level. But oh so good with a great tomato sauce that offered a scintillating tingle to our tongues. It was definitely the standout entree. And everything came to the table piping hot, including the dessert cheese ball. We were disappointed with our order of naan. It was flat and tasteless. We've had better naan from a grocery store package. While the food definitely was very good, we thought the prices were a bit high. Our entrees were close to $30 each. And the portions were decent but not ample. Lunch for 2 with 2 entrees, an order of naan, tax, and tip, was $80.

Either way, feeling alittle adventurous then try brain masala. Yucky ? No actually it tastes very good, as a kid I was totally grossed out by the whole concept of this Pakistani delicacy. As a adult I have gotten to the point that I want to try different unique foods and see if I like them. Bundo khan is a "minimalist" restaurant, actually it is a shabby looking restaurant with no sense of decor or beauty. The food takes forever to cook (45 mins at least) so go on a day where you have time or place the order on the phone. However, brain masala is one item on the menu that keeps me going back every few weeks when my palate craves some brain food. You can get a order of daal (lentils) they are made in thick gravy sauce and are good. I do not recommend the kabobs or chicken tikkah etc because the portions are so small and dry it's not even funny. If you want to step it up a notch and your palate is on a wild streak, get takka tak ! You must be thinking takka, whatt ? Let me explain takka tak is also another delicacy and it is a mixture of maghaz(brain), gurda(kidneys), champein(ribs) etc. All these organs are chopped and mixed together to make a unique dish with masala (spices). Takka tak word originates from the way the chef chops the pieces and you hear a cool sound in his knife mastery. So, I suggest to order brain masala and takka tak and see which one your palate likes best.

We ordered the veggie samosas, chicken tikka fries, paneer tacos, a side of fries and mango lassi. The mango lassi was flavorful and refreshing. The side of fries were crispy and for $6, you get a ton! The veggie samosas were incredible. Crispy on the outside, delicious flavor on the inside. I could've just had two orders of those and been happy. The chicken tikka fries were such an insane portion, definitely enough for 2. The chicken was juicy and fresh. The tikka was pretty spicy, but not spicy enough to ruin the meal. Just spicy enough maybe to make the nose run a little, but leave you wanting more. The paneer tacos were super unique. Ive never seen anything like it. They weren't skimpy on the paneer either, would absolutely order these again! Overall with everything we ordered, and a soda, the total came to $53.40. Considering we didn't have to eat for the rest of the day, and two of the items we got were unique, I'd say it was worth the money and I would for sure be back to try other things.
