I am writing this review on behalf of my sister who is so upset and disappointed with this salon that she could not write it herself. Initially, my sister went and thought they were great; she went twice and this was her third time going. However, during her third visit today, she noticed that they used a shampoo with a relaxing agent. Her card that she gave them specifically asked for K18 products and "relaxer" was NOT circled on the card. When she was getting her hair washed, she could smell the relaxing agent and assumed it was the person next to her in the bowl. She specifically asked that they use K18 products on her hair, and again, it was circled on her card that she gave the lady. My sister's hair is natural, and has been natural, for over 10 years. It is very thick, 4a hair, and she is keenly aware of what a relaxer can do to it and what it smells like. Not only did she smell the chemical, but immediately after the wash, they were able to part her hair with ease, which never is the case even after detangling her natural hair. Because the individuals who wash the hair and the hair dresser do not speak English well, my sister waited to speak with the front desk after her hair was done. When she politely spoke to the front desk about her concern and asked whether K18 products were used, the front desk associate did not even ask the hair washer and instead insisted that they did not use any sort of relaxing treatment on my sister's hair. To reiterate, she could literally smell the relaxer on her hair and was concerned. Anyone that has ever had a relaxer or has been in a salon around it knows exactly what it smells like, as the smell is very potent. Instead, the front desk associate insisted that they use high quality products, which was not my sister's concern and entirely irrelevant. Once she got home, she continued to smell the chemicals. I went over to her house after the appointment because she was so upset and even I could smell it. My sister then finally tried to wash it out herself to begin the process of repair. Her hair was bone straight after the wash. Again, she has very thick, natural, 4a hair. It is beyond evident that they used a relaxing agent shampoo and not only that, but her hair is breaking off and parts were coming out in clumps. Would not recommend this salon to anyone that wants to maintain the integrity of their hair. My sister now has to focus on repairing the damage they've done and waiting years for this relaxer to grow out. My sister only puts K18 and Olaplex products in her hair. I have been coming here since 2017 and I can say I've always had a pleasant experience. I appreciate the front desk attendants hospitality and patience with my questions as well as suggestion on services. I appreciate the shampoo and roller techs patience with combing through my 4c hair and making it as painless as possible. I appreciate the salon respecting the order of service (meaning if I was the first customer making sure I am the first to get pulled from the dryer into the styling chair) this is something that use to be a challenge across the board for all booked and busy salons so i am pleased to see how they have improved their process seamlessly. I also have had some issues with hair loss and the stylist was able to cover my post partum patches and make me feel beautiful leaving the chair! Over all 5 stars this go round! OH AND Sign up for their membership. It just makes sense if your a diva and need your hair to look flawless 24/7! read more

Unethical business practices. I traveled 200 miles to the Bowie location for the Brazilian knots service. My appointment was made over two weeks in advance and it was communicated that I was bringing my own hair. I even paid a $200 deposit to secure the appointment. The evening prior to my appointment, I was contacted by the salon to confirm my appointment and the exact style I wanted (curly or blown out). I specified that I wanted my hair curly. I arrived at my appointment and was helped right away. The staff is friendly and pleasant. My complaint is not about the demeanor of the staff at all. 4 hours after my install began and when Jeimy was finished installing the knots, I was able to see that the hair I provided didn't blend well with my hair at all. The look on her face suggested that she could see that it didn't look nice. Jeimy suggested she wet my hair to try to blend, but thang didn't help. I then asked would cutting them bundles help, because I could only see the blending issue in the front. She had another stylist cut the bundles and they both said it looked "better." However Jeimy admitted that she KNEW the hair wouldn't blend when she saw the hair. There was absolutely no discussion about her concerns with blending. She simply went forward with the install. When I reached out to her a day later after I tried further manipulation with no success, Jeimy responded telling me if I bought hair from her, there would be a consultation regarding blending and texture. It's unethical to know a client's expectation prior to providing the service and know that expectation won't be achieve, and not even bother to tell the client. It's deceptive business practices. Update: The response from the owner is filled with lies. I requested a partial refund and she offered to refund me my tip. Also the hair not used, it was dyed and had leave in conditioner. The cost of the install was for up to 2 bundles, which wasn't used, so there shouldn't have even been an extra charge considered even if the install went higher. Lastly, if it is her standard to consult with clients and if she knew the hair wouldn't blend, being the expert, why didn't she do this with me? read more

Well...the salon does really good job as far as my hair is concerned but they are tooo freaking loud!!!! Today for instance, I'm trying to enjoy my shampoo & the shampoo girl is having a loud conversation right over my head with her colleague!!! I asked her to stop talking so loud , now she don't understand english...her colleague understood, continued to converse loudly and then turned the music up loud!!!! On a previous visit, this same shampoo girl was sweeping the floor directly towards the four customers (me included) under the dryer...WTF???? After working so hard for 2 years to get my curly hair to a healthy place, they damaged my hair after 1 visit. I told them I wear my hair natural and that I just needed my hair lightly blow dried so that I can slick it back into a ponytail, and they reassured me that it wouldn't damage my hair. Please investigate Salon 809 in Bowie Md. before going-. They get very angry when you decline their deep conditioner treatment and act like they don't want to do your hair without it. I can't prove it but I believe that they are utilizing an odorless straightening agent in their "deep conditioner" Most of their customers have natural hair and may use color THEREFORE adding a straightening agent can cause extreme breakage and it's fraudulent if customers are not made aware. If you look at the Yelp reviews and search for 1 star reviews you will see many customer complaints about their natural hair being over processed and falling out after services at Salon 809 . Most of these reviews are being regulated to "review not recommended" which is why I couldn't find them before I went to this establishment. - Also a reason for us to question Yelps practices. My experience at Solon 809 is below 1. Their dryers / flatirons are set on "Super hot" temperature. 2. They will not turn their dryers or flat iron temperature down and get an attitude when you ask them to reduce the Heat temperature 3. In addition I can't prove it but I think they are using a straightening agent in their conditioner - My hair is falling out bad and my dermatologist confirmed it had been over processed 4. When I complained I called the salon and they to.d me to go purchase an Aphoghee conditioner from the beauty supply store and that would help restore my natural curls. I brought the recommended conditioner to the salon - They had the audacity to try to charge me an additional &8 to sit under the dryer for ten (10) minutes. I've been coming here since it opened, but one thing that has irked me is that on two occasions--out of the norm--the stylist has made me wait behind other patrons whose hair is under the dryer...when I am just getting a straight blow out. First of all, that makes just zero sense. Because now my hair is getting dry without being detangled. But also you pay more to have your hair blown dry instead of a wash and set. So why am I being made to wait--and for hours--after someone, when my hair was ready to be blown out and styled an hour before, while that customer was sitting under the dryer? Second thing I've noticed is the salon's cleanliness has declined. I usually come on slower days--but can't always come in the morning when they open. It doesn't hurt to just have someone do periodic sweeps of the floor, pick up towels etc. Finally, today when I came... I had an appointment but the wash girl was in the back--I tried to be polite and waited 15 minutes beyond my appointment to speak up. But seriously there were no customers getting their hair washed...2 under the dryer and myself...so no excuse as to why she was in the back. read more

I tried visiting Salon 809 on Tuesday morning. I made an appointment for 9:30 am and was parked outside of the shop by 9:15. I saw one of the workers go into the shop at 9:27, so I politely gathered my things and went to wait at the door. There was another young lady waiting so we started chatting. Turns out we both had appointments for 9:30 and had never been to the salon. We were so excited and looked forward to our appointments. Here's where the problem started. We were outside waiting in the heat until 9:45am. We called the shop and was told they were open but to give us a minute... what? We are your customers... We both looked at each other and decided we would wait few more minutes. The salon called her phone twice, the first to confirm that we had actually booked at the right location, and the second time to give us the address to the location in Landover. When we asked why we were told oh the water is off there.... so no one could explain that any earlier than 9:50am? They ended up texting me the address right after with no apology. Just the address to a location 20 minutes out of my way. I was over it. The other young lady decided to go to the Landover location but myself? I totally opted to book at Sashelvis down the road. Carmen was very sweet, open on time, and took great care of me. Im all about customer service. This spot just doesn't have it. I understand things happen but the way this was handled was unprofessional and unpleasant. I won't give them a try in the future. I highly recommend visiting another shop. This review is a little late but I highly recommend salon 809! They had social distancing protocols in place. Only one other customer was getting their hair done at the same time as me. As soon as a customer moved from a seat they disinfected the chair immediately. I don't remember the lady's name who did my hair but she was super sweet and got the job done quickly (and pain free!) And the very nice lady who washed my hair did a very thorough job (also pain free! I'm tender headed). This is my new salon home for when I occasionally get my hair straightened. I've even considered bringing my two daughters here. I'm gonna include a screen shot from a video on their Instagram page that shows my hair from the time I got in the chair to finish. I received a blow out for my 23rd wedding anniversary. Long story short my hair was burnt out and fell out with each wash. I ended up cutting it. Trust the reviews depending on your texture hair. There was no care in handling my hair. I believe I also may have had the wrong stylist but unless you go here often you wouldn't know who to go to and trust with your crown. read more

Don't do it! Don't even go close to this salon if you have natural hair. They will destroy it! Please, please, please, stay away from this salon. This review is long because of how furious I am and how regretful I am and I"m hoping this information will help someone. Ok, so to start off, I haven't stepped into a salon for over 5 years since I tend to my natural curls myself and do all my weaves and crochet at home. So on one fateful day in early July, after my last day at a stressful job, I was too tired to deal with washing natural hair, so I decided that I needed to treat myself by booking an appointment to get my hair washed and blow-dried at the salon so I would braid it the next day. I got there and explained what I wanted to the stylist. Told her that I was braiding my hair the next day, so just wash and blow-dry. She didn't seem to understand/speak English well, but she repeated what I said to me, so I assumed she got it. my first clue should have been when she started washing my hair and aggressively combed the hair to detangle. Anyone who knows natural hair knows that you have to gently detangle. I should have been afraid at that point. She washed my hair just once, conditioned, and was done. I didn't think the hair was clean, but at this point, I just wasn't willing to have her maltreat my hair some more, so I didn't complain. She took me back to her station and that's where she proceeded to torch my hair, all in the name of blow-drying it. I don't know what kind of devil blow-dryer she was using, but that thing was hot! Scalding my scalp and I could smell my hair burning, but she kept telling me that it wasn't a problem. Mind you, this girl was on the phone with her boy the entire time she was working on my hair, so she wasn't even paying attention to me as the client. I should have just gotten up and left, but frankly, I was tired and desperate and just wanted my hair dried at this point for braiding the next day. After assaulting my hair in the name of blow-drying, she turned me towards the mirror (she had turned me away from it the entire time) and my natural hair was bone thin and stringy. I was miserable! My hair smelled burned through the whole night. The next day, I couldn't stand the burnt smell, so I proceeded to wash my hair again and my curl pattern was completely gone! like bone straight, no curls as if I had used a relaxer. Three months later, my hair still has no curl pattern, and my hair has become so weak that it has broken off all over. In some places, my hair is so badly damaged that the only hair I have is the few inches of new growth from the last three months since this stylist damaged my hair. I'm going to have do a big chop after 8 years of nurturing my natural hair, just because of the incompetence and negligence of the stylists at this salon. Next they have a sign that says walk-ins welcome yet when they arrive, they tell you they can't see you unless you have an appt. Therein lies the problem. You call another location to get an appt time for the location you are standing at the door waiting for service yet the location you call tells you they need to call the location you are physically at to see if they have availability and that they'll call you back. But guess what? You NEVER receive a returned phone call and then the location you are attempting to have services rendered tells you "well just keep calling back" ... I'm sorry pardon?? I always come to the salon location in Bowie. They always do such a wonderful job with me and my daughter's hair. The one thing that I have noticed that I think needs to be addressed as the owner and how she needs to greet the customers that patronize her business when she is in the store. Went to check out their new salon in Bowie today to get my 5-year old daughter's hair washed, blow-dryed, and curled. The charge was $70 which is absolutely ridiculous and it was a 30 minutes wait due to the shop only having 2 people working. I guess they forgot that it is 3 other Dominican Salon's within a 5 mile radius. I went up the street to Melania's in Crofton where they took us right in and only charged $50 dollars for the same service plus they clipped her ends. That's what I called fast, affordable, great customer service. Please think twice if you are taking your daughters here to get their hair done as they will over charge you. read more

I made an appointment for a weave wash and set and when I got there, the stylist looked at my hair as though she had never seen a weave before. I was made to wait for one hour with no updates regarding when they would take me. I just recently starting coming here. I first want to say that the decor is really nice! I like the fact that you don't have to wait for a long period of time. I be in and out. A few things I dislike is that my hair be smelling burnt afterwards. I want to continue to come here because of the service as well as the prices but I really don't want my hair to get damaged due to high heat. Secondly, I like to continue seeing one person, not whomever is there. I want to build a relationship with just one stylist whom will know my hair the best. (a stylist asked me about a trim when another stylist had trimmed it 2 weeks prior) Lastly, I am African American so my hair texture is different from the employees. With natural hair you have to be more gentle (don't snag hair) and use a wide tooth comb instead of a rat tail comb at times. My overall goal is to have healthy growing hair. Don't waste your money coming here. I came here before for a wash and set (with rollers) and paid $65. I called before I came to make an appointment and the lady quoted me $65 after telling her my hair length and everything. The last time I came here I had longer hair. I come in today with shorter (shoulder length) hair because it was cut elsewhere and they charged me $85 for a wash and set (with rollers). I've been getting blowouts for years and never paid that much and to get a wash and set without rollers aka a blowout is supposed to be more but I got rollers. I asked why so much and was told that the prices went up. Nowhere on their little paper in the front where the prices are located does it say that prices went up. I will never come here again! Don't waste your money here! There are many more Dominican salons that charge between $35- $60 that's are located in the surrounding areas.
