Reviewing on behalf of a family member with no yelp. The cut didn't look like what they requested at all, which was a very simple cut and it was crooked with jagged ends. The person performing the service used combs pulled directly from the barbicide without drying it off so barbicide ended up in the hair. A smock was used that only covered the chest so hair ended up all down their back and in the collar of nape of the neck. The brush used was full of hair like it hadn't been cleaned out in a long time. The overall look of the salon was clean and nice but this specific person's work station was dusty and full of hair like they didn't clean it for a long time. I have been going to Hair By Ell for almost 20 years. This is a great Salon. Very Family Oriented. Liz the Owner is a great person. You really feel the love from everyone there. Rula is my Hairdresser. She is an amazing stylist, and she is so fun to be around. She makes you feel like family, well we are now! She did my entire family's hair for my daughter's Wedding. Don't know why this place doesn't have any reviews! I just tried Hair by Ell for the first time from the Groupon, and I was very pleased with the experience. First off, my hair looks great. I got a full highlights and a cut. The whole thing took an hour and a half, which usually takes longer. I fully trusted my hair stylist, and she proved well! Second, the staff was all very friendly, both in person and in making the appointment. Thirdly, the location was very nice. I'd go back to get my nails and hair done again. The drive was rough coming from Arlington to Maryland, but that's a no-brainer. Off rush-hour hours though, this would be worth the drive from VA, DC, or other parts of MD. read more

My first trip to the salon. Joe was excellent and knew exactly how to cut my hair and what I wanted. Felt like he listened more than any hairstylist I've ever been too. My only complaint was $50 for haircut style and blowdry, seemed a bit much. Need highlights and roots covered but guessing that would be in the $200 range....my stylist over an hour away that I was hoping to get closer to home...only charges me $85 for haircut blowdry and highlights. Guess I will have to continue to make the trek for that price. read more

Just got a great haircut from Denise at Hair by Ell. Was impressed by the cleanliness and overall operation of the business. Since this was my first time going to here I didn't know what to expect. I got a really great haircut. I went in with a lions mane and came out with a layered even cut. I will definitely return. They really make you feel at home here. I have been getting my hair cut here since...I don't know sometime in the early 2000s maybe? A long time. I have lived out of state for the last 8 years, but after a number of bad haircuts up here, if I'm doing anything more drastic than a trim I will wait until a visit home to go here. Over the years, Betty has cut my hair from hip length to halfway down my back, layered it up, given me bangs, helped me grow out my bangs, given me bangs again, chopped it all off to a pixie, and helped me follow any color dream I've wanted from red to black to blonde. She is honest with me and tries to give me the cut I want but tailored for me - not just copied from a photo. This place has grown from just hair services to a whole slew of other beauty services, and I haven't dealt with a sour person yet. My complaint isn't so much about the salon, but the stylist. While she seemed to know her stuff very well and was very speedy, she didn't give me anything even close to the color I wanted. Prior to working on my hair, I discussed with her in detail the color/s I wanted and even showed her pictures. I felt that she knew exactly what I wanted and could make it happen. She even bragged about herself while she worked on my hair. Well, I ended up with a "subtle" (her words) version of what I wanted. She, in a round-about way, indicated afterwards that she was afraid to do what I asked. I wished that she had been upfront with me. I didn't ask for "subtle." "Subtle," in this situation, is just another word for "safe." It's quite unpleasant to pay almost $200 for a hair color that you don't feel at all good about. On a positive note, I would like to compliment the shampoo girl. I wish that I knew her name because she was awesome! She gave me the best, most relaxing shampoo EVER! read more
