He gave me a wondeful dry-cut while paying careful attention to my curl pattern, made sure of the length I wanted, and was very knowledgeable in general. Also gave me some great product suggestions and did a really relaxing shampoo/condition that did wonders for my curls. My hair looks fantastic 11/10, will be coming back! I rarely feel this way in regards to brick and mortar establishments but I genuinely hope Louie's salon is closed down. I went in to Gregg's Salon for a haircut and was greeted with such great, positive energy! They were conversational and personable, Louis did an AMAZING job on my hair, it was definitely one of the BEST hair cuts I've ever had. The precision and amount of care/attention was phenomenal. Highly recommend! In terms of COVID, I was first intrigued to come in because I saw a Clorox wipes bottle and saw that as a good sign that they actually cared about disinfecting/proper social distance protocol, and I was so correct, the door was open the whole time, there is plexus glass between every station, and staff asked me to sanitize my hands to ensure there is no cross contamination. I was recommended to Louie from a friend who got her hair done by him. I had a hair cut by him in which he even had cut my ear and neck. He was very rude and unprofessional as well after I mentioned it. I never had such an awful experience getting my hair done yet he didn't even do a good job that I had to go somewhere else to get it fix. I started seeing Louis a couple of years ago and only get my haircut twice a year so each time it's a transformation. What I love about Louis is his confidence in making me look great! He always know exactly what to do but is also totally open to communication along the way and working with me to make sure I leave a happy customer. I have very black silky Asian hair and haven't dyed it since I was in high school. I wanted to dye the tips of my hair a light lavender color for a performance, so I went around to five different hair salons in the Oakland area for a consultation. Every one of them told me that the procedure would (a) melt my hair (b) make it look terrible (c) be way beyond my price range. I finally walked into Gregg's Grand Salon and met Rainbeau. She was warm and welcoming from the get-go and not only that, was very excited about the challenge. She assured me that my hair was definitely not going to melt and talked me through the different options we could try out and what exactly it would do to my hair. It's clear that her many years of experience doing color makes her a pro at what she does and although this would be a new challenge and experiment for her, I trusted her completely. We scheduled an appointment for a test strand. She worked meticulously on this single test strand to make sure that it came out just right -- a true perfectionist! She even took time out of her busy schedule to go pick up an extra light lavender toner to put on before the dye to achieve the metallic look I wanted. The test strand came out great so she went to work on the entire head. The final product came out looking absolutely wonderful, it was exactly what I wanted! A lavender ombre for a long bob that goes well with my natural hair color and skin tone. I've gotten so many compliments from people, even after a lot of the dye wore off because of the placement of the dye job and the way the extra toner makes my hair look silvery with a tinge of purple. Rainbeau came in on her day off to spend the whole day with me dying my hair. I really felt like I not only met my favorite stylist (I've never really had great experiences at hair salons before) but also made a really great friend. She was also understanding of my financial situation so we worked out a price together. She even came with friends to see me in the performance and gave me a free wash and blow-dry as an opening night gift! Five stars for Raibeau and Gregg's Grand Salon. read more

I wish I left here feeling like all of these other people that had such amazing experiences and haircuts. Instead, nearly three weeks later I am still majorly bummed and unsure of how to fix my bad haircut. I have even been debating whether or not to write this because I don't like bad-mouthing people and the staff was nice, but alas - I am really disappointed!! I made an appointment for my first haircut in a year - the haircut I had before left me traumatized. Perhaps I should have requested Rainbeau since everyone speaks so highly of her. Instead I saw someone else (who I will not mention since they were very very nice). Here is the honest truth: - I was assured I would "love it". i can't say I love it at all - in fact, my hair looks worse than it did when i walked in the door. - Yes, the color we decided on turned out nice. But I really wish I didn't feel talked out of getting highlights, which is what I originally wanted to try. - I was also talked out of getting bangs too even though I have had bangs many different times in my life and it's always looked good. - It hurt to have my hair washed and conditioned which is usually such an enjoyable part of getting one's hair done - ouch! Sucktown. - An annoying customer of came in late and was making remarks about me the whole time - my hairdresser was making annoying comments back - the banter was really obnoxious and my hairdresser started to act and work rushed. Not cool. - My hairdresser noticed that my hair was uneven on one side prior to cutting it --- to my surprise, he didn't fix it!! It's still uneven AND top heavy on one side. - The cut is lame - totally lame. I asked for sexy, it's not sexy....not even close. There is nothing sexy or cool or stylish about this haircut. It's blah all the way. Even my friends and my partner are confused as to what I can do to make it look better. $200 later - I'm wearing my hair in a bun everyday since I can't manage to make it look good. Rainbeau is seriously a hair genius. I'm pretty protective of my hair and am super picky about hairdressers as a result. I had a pretty particular request that would require a lot of work and she was awesome about explaining everything to me and making sure I knew what I was getting myself into. And boy did she deliver. Plus, the color/highlights/cut I had done looks AMAZING even after growing out over the last 4 months. Let me start by saying the location is perfect, although parking around the lake can be difficult. My appointment was for 10 am so I was lucky enough to find a space right in front of the salon. The salon is very clean, the music was great and the clientele was mostly "mature" adults. (Seniors). This works for me because I loathe salons full of cackling women. I also loved the racial diversity of the clientele and staff. ALL of the stylists seemed very friendly and professional. It was the perfect atmosphere since it was my first time. I called Monday for an appointment with Opal and she was able to get me in today without a problem. She got major brownie points for this bc not only do I have the tendency to want my hair done at the last minute but also my schedule varies daily so this was super convenient! I expressed my anxiety to Ms. Opal and she was very patient and sensitive. I had the same stylist for 10 years prior to moving to the Bay and I've just not been able to find someone to care for my hair the way they would care for their own. Ms. Opal PATIENTLY answered all of my questions and asked me multiple times if I was doing okay ( I'm very tender headed). The only negative was that she occasionally used a small tooth comb to detangle my hair and went from root to end instead of end to root. She helped me decide what was best for my hair, styled it the way I wanted it and booked my next appointment! Others pros: 1. She didn't go back and forth between my hair and other clients. 2. She is super friendly and funny 3. Reasonably priced for the bay (I'm from the south where everything is cheap) 4. My hair looks and feels amazing During the detangling I convinced myself I wouldn't go back, but after I saw how gorgeous my hair looked I decided that Ms. Opal is my new go to!!!!! Next time I'll just ask her if she can go end to root and use a wide tooth comb to cut back on the breakage and tangles. read more

Louis Martinez is simply the best hair stylist and colorist I've ever known. I've been seeing him for more than 6 years, and every time I leave his salon my hair looks fabulous. I call him the hair genius: no matter what it looks like when I walk in--roots, split ends, etc.--when I walk out, my hair is gorgeous, shining, silky, and beautifully colored. Louis uses an European brand of hair color that doesn't damage hair, it actually makes your hair healthier, and it shows. Louis is a consumate pro--he can color the roots, put in highlights, and cut my hair in less than an hour and a half--yet he's also an artist, with the finest color sensibility of any stylist I've ever met. He understands how to create customized color that perfectly complements your skin tones. I always feel like a princess when I leave here, and get compliments on my hair all the time. Louis has also styled my 80-year-old mother's hair when she visits, and made her look beautiful, too. In addition, he's a lovely person--kind, considerate, and sweet. As long as Louis's in business, this is where I'll be getting my hair done. He well deserves the five-star rating. In 6 years, I've never had a "bad hair day" here. Highly recommended! read more
