This review is for Louis. The salon in general is great but damn, can that man cut hair! I have been to so many different stylists throughout the years I can't even count. I mostly go with a fairly simple long layered cut, but Louis worked some extra magic. It looked good when I left the salon but now, two months later, I still have people asking me almost every day if I just got my hair cut because it looks so good. And believe me, I do not have styling skills, so the cut is doing all the work. My hair is a giant, curly, frizzy mess and Louis managed to make it happy. Thanks Louis! There is a hairstylist they're called Rainbow. She always cut my hair pretty good. Typically I'd come in a few weeks after my cut and get my sideburns and neck trimmed between haircuts. The day before New Year's Eve I went in there and she absolutely botched my hair right before a party and refused to fix it. I just wanted my sideburns trimmed she cut it very short on the sides and left it all long and fluffy on the top It looked like a disaster. And refused to clean it up before New Year's Eve. Unbelievable poor customer service. Then she made excuses for why she did it. read more

My stylist, Rainbeau, just moved over here from Rockridge. The salon is in a very beautiful space, and I can look at Lake Merritt when I get my hair cut. The stylists are incredibly friendly and they do great work. I highly recommend it. read more

He accommodates my crazy schedule and magically finds time to see me, even on short notice. I have thick hair that grows fast, and quickly becomes unmanageable. Each time I go to see Louis I always request something a bit different. Every visit he makes time to give me the perfect cut and, when I ask, recommends appropriate hair products sold in shop. Louie is amazing! I came in with super damaged hair (Bleached for 6 months) but Louie brought my hair back to life! I've gotten a hair cut and have been coming back for color the past few months. I went from dark brown to caramel and now to blonde. Louie uses fantastic products because my hair hasn't been or felt damaged since he's been doing my hair in June. I would HIGHLY recommend him. Opal Roberts--- To sum it up in one word is FABULOUS!!! My daughter and I have been clients for years. We are quite eclectic and like to stay current with hair and fashion trends. She is very skilled in custom hair-color, precision and razor haircutting, extensions, and other high fashion coiffure ( bridal, fashion show, and theatrical) styling. Her experience and product knowledge for proper maintenance and upkeep is imperative for me since my haircare needs change frequently. I walked into Gregg's because I pass their storefront twice a day when going to and from work. I popped in around 4:00 PM to see if they had any openings, and was told to come by around 4:45 PM -- sweet! I don't expect any salon to have last-minute openings like that, but it's such an awesome occurrence when it works out. I had to wait a couple of minutes when I arrived, but the overall time spent there was faster than expected (about an hour for a wash, cut and blowout) and I had a superb experience. LOUIE was my stylist, and he had really wonderful suggestions and great service. I had little idea when I walked in about what I wanted -- just take away the split, dry parts, I said -- but he created a lovely cut for me that is manageable and frames my face nicely. I am happy to say that it's my favorite hair cut thus far! Reasonably priced, great time efficiency (although not rushed whatsoever), sweet chitchat, kind service, and lovely locks. Loui is awesome ! I needed an urgent haircut , so I showed up at this hair salon and I didn't have an appointment but Loui was able to take care of me within 10 minutes ( I was lucky) . Opal is a hair genius! My hair was pressed and flat ironed like no other. There was no gross burn smell, she used just the right amount of products and clearly knows how to tend to black hair. I am (was) a brunette, who walked into this salon a couple weeks ago inquiring about becoming a blonde! I have a couple of hairstylist friends who thought I was crazy, but upon talking to Rainbeau, all I got was enthusiasm and support! Not only did she make me feel comfortable in the salon, she made me feel like I gained a lifelong hairstylist AND A FRIEND!! F this place..... $80 for what's basically a trim.... cutting my hair at an angle in less than 20 minutes and calling it layered does not justify that B.S. price. One side is flat chopped lines the other is sort of layered but better angled. Then I go to pay and they tell me: oh sorry hun only cash or check. So I have to drive to the bank pull out cash and drive back, the near by ATM was closed. Letting me know on the phone when I made the appointment would have been helpful. NEVER GOING BACK. Also. The hair dresser literally said "I don't like talking while I give a hair cut becasue I just don't do as good of a job" then proceeded to run his mouth the whole time while talking to my boyfriend and looking at him as the scissors cut my hair. Nope nope nope. Update. I called to see if someone else could fix this disaster and they would not set up a convenient time for me and wanted the same guy, Loui, that screwed up my hair in the first place to be the one to fix it. I recently changed hairdressers to Gregg's Grand Salon after my hairdresser of 25 years retired and one in between hairdresser just couldn't get my hair right. My 28 year old daughter referred me to this salon because she knew Greg. However, I do not see Greg. I have been seeing Louie Martinez now, 3 times. The last time I saw him, I asked him to color my hair as I had been using box color that seemed dull and lifeless. Louie is amazing!!! He is sooo knowledgeable!! Whereas the other 2 hairdressers left my head with bald spots and I thought my hair was thinning, Louie assured me that I have a full head of hair and that my hair is fabulous!! He knew just how to cut and style and color my hair. I look 10 years younger, vibrant and feel like a million dollars. I highly recommend Louie!! I have mixed-race ethnic hair and in 43 years, I've only had 3 stylists who could blowdry it well, and 5 who could give me a decent cut. I relocated to Oakland 6 months ago and have been anxious about finding another stylist. The moment I sat in Rainbeau's chair my anxiety went away. This was my first time at this Salon. It is located in a beautiful spot on Grand Ave and the people that work there-Geez ..they are so friendly! I have to say my hair is not easy to cut! And some just don't know what to do with my thick, wavy hair. I actually just tell the stylist to leave it wet and I will style it when I get home. Gregg's Salon is walking distance from my apartment near Lake Merritt. The first time I went there, Louis (I call him Louie) cut my hair. He did such a great job that my hair still looked good after 4 months. I have been wanting to make an appointment, but something else always came up. I was walking by the salon today and Louie was outside drinking his coffee. I asked him if he can cut my hair (no appointment) and he squeezed me in. This salon is most awesome because this is where Rainbeau is :). She is the most wonderful hairstylist and once she cuts your hair you will never go to another hairstylist. She is truly an artist because she has a vision for your hair the moment you step in the salon and most importantly she can make it happen. Classy, trendy, chic...she can do it all. Everyone experienced going to a salon with a picture of a haircut and coming out with a hairstyle that looked nothing like the picture. This will not happen with Rainbeau. Even if you are not sure what you want, she will know what to do. She puts all her energy and love into making your hair look beautiful and coming out of that salon super happy. I also have to mention that you will experience an amazing head massage during shampooing, have a wonderful conversation during the cut and come out with a lot of tips on how to keep your hair looking awesome. I have nothing negative to say about this salon in general. Its quite nice. But I had two very bad experiences with a haircutter named Rainbeau. First she completely ignored what I asked for in a haircut. Even when I checked in just before she started cutting to be sure she understood what I wanted. She said "yes, totally" and then just gave me the cut she wanted. It was not technically a bad cut, but it was completely not me, and not remotely what I asked for. She also gave my daughter a great cut that same day. So I brought her back 6 weeks later to have it cut again. But she just chopped a little chunk here and there, almost nothing, and then she said it was back just like she originally cut it, which was completely untrue. I am baffled by how bad she is at listening and providing what I asked for. She might have the skill, but not the willingness help you get the haircut you want. Be warned!!! Don't get Rainbeau to cut your hair!!! For me part of a great haircut is having someone listen to you and do the best they can to provide the cut you are asking for. Rainbeau won't do this. Ugh!
