Hidemi is absolutely amazing! I cut my hair in Moscow, Chicago, Rome, New York and here in Boston. I usually pay $75 for haircut at least and on occasion I paid $120, because I choose the most experienced and "artistic" person. This haircut that I got from Hidemi is THE BEST in my life!!!! I am not exaggerating! Judge for yourself -- I attached the pic of my haircut and the picture that I showed Hidemi when I walked in. She charged me $55 and my hair looks exactly as picture that I showed. It is simply unbelievable. I will never go to any other stylist. Also keep in mind my hair is very fine and silky and does not lend itself to sharp angles or precision cuts. And yet, I can't deny the miracle! P.S. I have been getting my hair cut by Masa and Fumiko for the past few years and each time with great results. They were always on point with recommending a style that best suits you. This place should come with a warning label. I gave it a few tries and honey, "It's not me, it's you". Each time, I pointed at photos of what I wanted and said I want *this" haircut but Hidemi does what she wants instead. Very moody. Some days she talks nonstop until you're exhausted, other times doesn't say a word and acts as if you did something wrong. Also you're asked to arrive 15 minutes BEFORE your scheduled appointment and each time she makes you wait 15 minutes AFTER your scheduled appointment so she just wasted 30 minutes of YOUR TIME. Doesn't stop her from babbling about how she demands punctuality from her customers! Yeah I bet! Time is money, right? FOR HER. Also there's a "helpful" chart of how much you should tip. After living in Japan I realized I couldn't get my signature 'do in an American joint, so I looked for Japanese salons in the area. Most of them are crazy expensive Newbury Street types...no thanks! When I first went I was told Hidemi was the one to go to for newer styles, so it is that I have stuck with her exclusively. She's very talkative and funny but that does make her a bit slow sometimes. If you can speak Japanese with her she'll be quicker, just a note. Definitely a solid choice for anyone looking specifically for a Japanese salon. Bottom Line: Reasonable prices, good cuts. I have been coming here for couple of years now. A friend of mine had an awesome bob-do from long hair, and I was curious who cut her hair. It happened to be Hidemi. I had Mami cut my hair for first two times and found that her style is more reserved. I was very happy at the first haircut with Mami, however, I wasn't too happy with her the second time. It was more of the same haircut I had with her at the first time, just with a little more of arrangement. If you like the feminine goodie-girl look, I would recommend Mami for it. I wanted to have a little more of edgy look so I switched to Hidemi. With Hidemi, I have had happy hair cut every time I went. She will chat you up to find out what you really want with your hair. She is also extremely blunt and honest about what works and what doesn't with your hair. Hidemi can pull off any hair style from safe to edgy. It's a lot of fun going to Hidemi. read more

Needed to switch to somewhere local and this salon had some great yelp reviews. Hidemi has been great for me and Hidemi is now my regular stylist. She's a little pricey for me but takes her time (always gives me an hour or longer!). Not only is she great at what she does she is very friendly and nice to chat with. She is the only stylist/barber I have ever had that is able to leave me mostly hair free. By this I mean after shampoo and blow dry she actually is able to get rid of loose hairs. Usually at other places I am left with loose hair everywhere and I end up in the shower right after. No need after a haircut here. It's all about the time and care that is put in and you can see they do this for each and every client. My fiance has started going here but to Mami and she had a really great cut and style from her as well. We are now both regulars here! They have awesome hours for people that work since they are open Saturdays and Sundays. They only take clients by appointment and they usually book up every hour of their day so call and make an appointment in advance. read more

Simply put, Hidemi is freakin' awesome with hair. The reviews don't lie on here after I got sucked in and got a haircut myself this past Thursday. I've been looking for a good, AUTHENTIC asian place for quite some time now, and after fumblin' around with yelp, I found this place and SO SO glad I did. By the way, what I meant by "authentic" is the technique used, and Hidemi has been trained, tracing back all the way from Japan. And I believe that's ONE major reason why she's so good at what she does. Anyways, I initially went in with another cut in mind... I had long hair and wanted to keep it that way, but with one look, Hidemi was very blunt about how the past hairdresser (an American joint) f^#%@ up my hair, and needs fixing. She somehow managed to persuade me to cut it much shorter than I had in mind (NOOO!!!!) and as a result, what my hair used to almost touch the lower of my back, is now mid-back length. At first, I was a little upset and sad that it didn't keep it's length. (I know, I know..) But besides that part, she did an AMAZING job with what a haircut supposed to be. My appt was at 3pm, she had another one at 4pm but stayed well over until 4:30 to finish my hair instead of rushing and "on to the next one"-Jay Z. And despite me being sad over the shortness, I've soon got over it and love the cut. She really did a good job with the cut and styling, AND it wasn't her fault that THAT much needed taken off in order to FIX someone else's mistake. If anything, I can always rock my extensions for now. Even the boyfriend complimented and I quote him, "It looks like your hair will grow out correctly this time". 5 stars, definitely :) Hidemi will now be my GO-TO person for my hair!!! I don't think I'm going back there anymore... I didn't have great time with Hidemi. First she asked me how I want my hair done. I told her the name of the hairstyle. She said that she doesn't recognize that name, so I just described that hairstyle (it was type of bob and I know that it exists because I googled it beforehand). She then asked me if I understand what bob is, so I said yes. THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART: She told me that I was wrong and that type of bob hairstyle doesn't exist. She TOLD me to describe the definition of the bob, so I did. She said that type of hairstyle is not bob. I felt uncomfortable, kinda offended too. I didn't expect her to treat me like that. Hidemi then asked the owner to google that hairstyle. And there it goes. It said that it is a type of bob hairstyle. Yeah, I was right. I didn't say anything to her. She didn't say anything to me either. No apologies. Well I didn't bother talking to her anymore. I just wanted her to cut my hair... yet I am not happy with my new hair cut. It was not what I asked for. It was my fourth time there. Not going back though. However, she seems to be nice to non-Japanese speaking customers. So I guess that's a plus for some people. After reading reviews on Yelp, I decided to try out Mami Hair Salon and I realized this is the best haircut I ever had! I wish if I had gone sooner. I strongly recommend Hidemi - Her technique is simply amazing and she has a great sense of style. I have tried out almost every hair salons in Boston, mostly overpriced Asian salons, and the results were mostly disappointing. I urge everyone to try out Mami Hair Salon. You'll see and feel the difference! For people commuting by bus- it's very easy to get there by #77 bus which you can take in Harvard Square. It's across the street from the Arlington Movie Theatre. I would give 0 stars if possible. They are TERRIBLE with hair. DON'T EVER GET YOUR HAIR CUT FROM MAMI. I specifically asked them to cut two inches- they cut 4-5 inches. I asked them to cut 2 for a reason, because i like long hair. They just cut your hair any way they feel like it, no matter how much you are opposed to it. I am thoroughly disappointed and upset with the experience here. They shouldn't be touching people's hair when they can't even follow requests. After reading the good reviews I had high hope for Hidemi. But I have to say I was very disappointed with my haircut. Everything was fine until she started to "texturize" my hair - I have very thin hair, any uneveness would show. After a wash at home, my hair looked aweful, very choppy and uneven. Hidemi did the japanese straightening on my hair. She's very cautious (followed the procedure to the T) and did a good job. Nice lady.

She knows what she is doing. The only thing is appointment is strongly suggested. It is a busy salon.

If you are looking for a new hairstylist, I highly recommend Hidemi for you. Not only she has the technic/skill but is also someone nice to talk to. I have very fine and thin hair, her "texturizing" technic really help me in creating more volume, love it. She is honest in a way that she doesn't push or sell you for additional treatments when it's not necessary. Hidemi always took her time to cut my hair and do it right. Also, the location is great, I could always find parking spaces nearby so I don't have to stress out about finding the parking space and the price is reasonable too. I have been going to Hidemi since she arrived from Japan almost 20 years ago and I have followed her to each salon she has worked in. She and Mami are consummate professionals and run an immaculate salon. Hidemi is a wonderful stylist and colorist and I have received endless compliments on my hair. I have a sensitive scalp and her products are the only ones that do not cause irritation. I now live in Washington, DC and still come to Hidemi to cut and color my hair.
