My husband and I are full time world travellers after our retirement in New York. We were visiting family in Arlington. I wanted a hair cut and decided to try out this nice-looking hair salon. I was sadly disappointed with how unwelcome I felt when I arrived for my appointment. Never in any other hair salon in any part of the world was I treated worse. I told one of the hairdressers how rude they were and left. What happened? I had a 10:30 appointment. I arrived about 7 minutes early. There were three hair stylists working with their clients inside. I tried to open the door but it was locked. I could not find any doorbell to ring. So I just stood outside the glass door, hoping someone would come open the door for me. But that never happened. The hair stylist with a client sitting closest to the door saw me. She just gave me a cold stare. There was no nod, no smile, and absolutely no attempt to come open the door or give a gesture to say" Please wait. We will be with you." So I stood there waiting. I was quite sure the other two hair stylists also saw me. Again, no one had the basic courtesy of coming over or at least giving me a nice acknowledgement. Just a casual stare and then ignored me. By around 10:27, one of the hairdressers, an African American lady, finished working with a client. They both came very close to the door to handle payment. They were no more than five feet from me. The client saw me and smiled. The stylist never looked at me She just chatted with the client, making me feel like I didn't exist. Then the client, a nice young lady, instead of the hair stylist, opened the door for me as she left. The hair stylist did finally greet me with a smile and asked if I was there for the appointment. I said yes and I asked," Is it your salon's policy that a customer who arrives early cannot enter the salon?" She was surprised and said no, customers could come in and wait. I told her the door was locked and asked why no one bothered to come to the door when they saw me standing there the whole time. She had no answer. I asked whether she saw me standing outside when she brought her client to handle payment near the door. She didn't say yes or no. I told her I found this kind of treatment of a client extremely rude and cancelled the appointment. The owner did contact me later to try find out what happened. It was a nice gesture but I see no point in discussing this with her. I am never eloquent and words sometimes fail me in a conversation. I wrote it here so she and others interested could read it. Suffice to say it was a most upsetting experience and I certainly have no intention to ever go back to this salon again. read more

If I could give this salon a million stars I would. I previously had black color treated hair and wanted a drastic change. I decided to try to remove the black from my hair and bleached my hair myself. It came out very uneven and I realized I made a big mistake and needed to have this fixed. I was concerned that a salon wouldn't really want to fix this or make it like I hoped, especially with such short notice. I saw that this salon was open at 7 am- I couldn't believe they were open that early but of course I called at 7am on the dot! I left a voicemail saying I'd like to come in for a color correction if they had any availability. The owner called me back right away. Immediately I felt reassured by her that this was going to be ok. She told me we've all done it, we'll take care of it, and told me I could come in that morning and she would look at it for me and do anything she could to try to fix it. Immediately I knew I was going to be in good hands. I truly felt like she had my best interest at heart. I stopped in with my hood on because I was so embarrassed. I had never even stepped foot in this salon before, but I walked in and immediately felt like I was someone they've known for years. They treated me like family! Jen and Sam took the time to not only go over options, but also asked me what I wanted to achieve and worked to find the best way to do that. They even agreed that after all of the bleaching I had done, we didn't have to just throw a color over it even though that probably would have been the simplest fix. They took time to show me colors and came up with a plan! I was able to make an appointment with Sam for the next morning bright and early. I showed her a picture of my goal after thinking a lot about it that night. It was a ginger color with a few blonde highlights. Sam worked through all of my hair to lighten all the pieces I missed. She evened out the color perfectly, and created the most beautiful copper color based off of what I showed her. She then went through and added some highlights to make it look more natural. She managed to create my reference picture exactly, I will post a picture- it's INCREDIBLE. She listened to exactly everything I wanted and somehow turned my hair disaster into the best hair I've ever had in my life. All the while, I felt so optimistic and knew I was going to love it before it was even done. I know that this is "just hair" but to me it's way more than that- This whole experience truly felt like a breath of fresh air. I was able to meet some wonderful, highly talented people who did everything they could to help me. Without any reservation I highly recommend this salon to everyone! Thank you so much!!!! read more

This is a lovely salon, very modern, clean, and well decorated. While not the friendliest place, this wasn't the worst customer service I've ever had. Waxing was painless; my eyebrows came out nice enough, but lacking the defined arch I requested. My haircut was just so-so. Despite the pictures I brought in, and a lengthy consult, I ended up with an outdated shoulder length haircut. Nothing modern or interesting about it. Once I got home and washed out the spray gel and pomade (gah!) I noticed that the layers on the right side were cut an inch shorter, and at a totally different angle than those on the left side. I went to JR Burke Salon for the first time last week and had my hair done by the talented Elizabeth Smith. She gave me Balayage low and highlights in a dark honey blonde color along with a trim. She listened attentively as to what I wanted and did just that. She was very friendly and professional as were her co-workers. I have been coming here for a few years and I have to say the atmosphere @ J R Burke does not compare to any other salon I've been to. The salon has professional stylists, great incentives when scheduling an appointment and their hair products are amazing. They carry Moroccan Oil products which truly Rocks and its a one stop shop while getting my hair done :) My stylist is very flexible. She works during the week, nights and weekends! PLUS They are open 7 days a week!!! O and I don't just get my hair done here either, they have recently introduced me to electrolysis which I love. Before that, I would get my eyebrows waxed :) I have scheduled a facial in the near future and I can't wait because if they are great at everything else-this is going to be an amazing facial! Just went here and despite the current construction (they expect to complete the revamp August 15???) I had an absolute blast. The quick - got a haircut and "express" keratin treatment for $100. Haircut is great and my keratin treatment/hair smells like chocolate. My hair is lovely. I look great. But more importantly, I had a blast. The long - look if you are looking for an uppity Newbury (or Harvard Square) style salon when your stylist doesn't remember a thing about you despite regular visits but you get to see a bunch of folks in suits glaring at each other, this isn't your place. I've been doing that for years and paying a boatload to be forgotten repeatedly. If you want a place that you feel like one of the gals (or guys, judging by what I saw while I was there) and like you've known everyone for ages, and can just relax, chat away, and have a blast - this is your place. Seriously. I don't give out 5 stars easily. I felt so welcome. And the service was great. Everyone there seems to love their jobs, their customers, and their coworkers. I had Katie, who is great, very personable and very friendly. And such great service. I found this place because I was looking for a parking spot in Arlington. Kismet? Perhaps, if the service were a little better. Let me explain. It actually all kinda depends on who you get when you're there. I've gotten a few leg waxes, an upper-lip wax, and maybe a haircut (the fact that I can't recall might say something about its nondescript memorability). The first wax, though, was fantastic; I was personally ripped by Ms. Jennifer R. Burke herself, under classy track lighting and betwixt mint colored walls, while she regaled me with the story of how she built the business and her clientele, all the while tweezing every stray hair. Amazing! I concluded. Best find ever! Super nice receptionists, attentive owner, and the classic underdog business story. I immediately booked my next appointment. ...Which sucked. I got the *other* waxing lady (who I subsequently got the next and final time I went back), who had nothing interesting to talk about, missed whole patches, and ripped the hair from my upper lip with such savagery it was sore for a whole day. There's definite potential for this place, and its customers have certainly kept it in business for 14 years, but if you want a cheap, thorough wax, forgo the creamy mint spa walls and book Rosa at Mario's. read more

Today was my first time at JR Burke Salon, but my second time with my stylist Patricia. I had a partial foil and a keratin done, they both came out amazing. She did a wonderful job with the color (all the other stylist were commenting on how beautiful it came out) and made sure to explain the whole process when it came to putting the keratin in. This can be a lengthy process, but it is definitely worth it. The salon is comfortable and the staff was extremely friendly. As I mentioned earlier it was my first time at this location and they made me feel like I had been there a million times. JR Burke is a beautiful and clean salon!! When you book your appointment, ask for Liz. She's taken great care of me at the salon. She assesses my hair verses the look I'd like to achieve and walks me through how we can get it there. She's great at being open and honest on what can be done with your hair. She also great at listening to things that bother me about my hair - for example, one side of my head the hair grows a bit thicker, so she thins it out so my head doesn't look lop-sided. She cut off about 5 inches earlier in the summer and gave me a great look. I'm seeing her in a few weeks for a fall 'do with highlights. Can't wait! read more

Yay. I found an awesome hair salon and have to rave about it. Let me tell you that I am not a high maintenance girl and rarely go for haircuts or the like. I think one of the main reasons for that is because I am usually uncomfortable in that type of environment. Not at JR Burke! I felt very comfortable from the moment I walked through the door. The fabulous receptionist was chatting me up and soon my stylist (Theresa) came and whisked me away. She consulted with me about my hair and what I wanted before she took me to get my shampoo. The hair cut was quick and precise. And painless. It pretty much turned out how I expected and I'm satisfied with my cute new 'do. I was on a budget so I couldn't splurge on anything fun, but their hair products smell AMAZING. Yum. I want to eat my hair. I will definitely be back. Oh dear, I just got the worst haircut of my life at JR Burke salon. I went back the next day and asked the stylist (Christine) to help organize the hair on top of my head, which had been cut to 1/2" in patches, amid longer patches of 1" - 2", seemingly randomly distributed. She said it was my hair's fault that it was sticking up and swirling with cowlicks, and I'd "have to comb it". I washed it again this morning and blew it dry while combing it, which I never do because it flattens out my nice natural curl. I'd settle now for neat and tidy, but the cowlicks are winning, and it's the wierdest haircut I've ever seen on anyone. Guess I'll be wearing a hat out in public for the next 3 or 4 months. I moved recently to Arlington and figured I would give a local salon a try. This salon was small but had fairly large waiting area which was great since I ended up waiting an extra 20 minutes for my first appointment. This was the only negative thing about my experience however. I had a foil color and haircut for less than most places in the area charge for the color. Teresa, my stylist did a great job and was also very friendly. The ladies working here make you feel at home instantly. I would recommend this salon for anyone looking for an affordable salon to get a great haircut or color. read more

Amazing salon! I recently got married across the street from the JR Burke salon at the Robbins Library. The salon is so cute and welcoming, and everyone was incredibly friendly. It has the atmosphere of your neighborhood beauty shop in an beautiful, classy setting. Adrienne took her time and did a beautiful job on both my hair trial and on the day of the wedding. She listened to me and was friendly, prompt and meticulous. My hair looked great the entire wedding day and did not come out even after several hours of dancing! I will definitely be back to see Adrienne for a haircut and color soon! Oh, I also had my eyebrows waxed when I came in for my hair trial and had a great experience, despite the not so great reviews below. Very disappointed as I had my hair colored and paid over $100. It was not light enough, and I called within a few days to let them know. The person who did my hair is only working 2-3 days. Those days were difficult for me and my schedule. So when I did finally make appt, they tell me they don't honor it anymore as it was over a week!!! Cancelled appt I had to redo and cut. And scheduled an appt somewhere else with another friend. Their loss. In my opinion, perhaps this is why it is not too busy in there when I go. read more

This salon is absolutely HORRIBLE. I have tried multiple stylists at this place and they all are inexperienced people who don't understand hair. They also completely ignore the clients wishes and do what they like. I had light colored, healthy hair and asked for a medium light brown color for the fall. They completely FRIED the crap out of my hair and dyed it a dark purplish black color. When I told them that this was NOT what I had wanted, they replied saying "Oh don't worry, wash it a few times and it will fade into the color you want" I reluctantly went home and shampooed and conditioned my hair 5 times. When I came out of the shower my hair was still very very dark and now looked like black with a magenta tint. I had to go to another salon to get it fixed because it looked so terrible. Not to mention in that same trip, they were so sloppy they got black dye all over my brand new 50$ cream colored bag. They then didn't apologize for ruining my bag. The stain never came off. All in all, do not go to this place. They are the absolute worst salon I have been to. I don't want to hurt their business by giving them a bad review for their waxing services... so, I want to update this by giving my review of the hair services too. I've gone to Kathy twice for cut/color and I love her. She's fantastic- attentive, listens to your input and she's very friendly. I was a little hesitant to go darker with my color, but she promised that she'd correct anything I didn't like. Turns out, darker actually looked better. She was right! As for the cut, well, I am hair styling challenged so I don't know what she did to get my hair to cooperate with me a bit more even after I washed it but she did something- now my hair actually looks decent even when I don't do anything to it. read more

Our whole family has been coming here for as long as they've been open (15 years?). They've always been friendly, patient, and incredibly accommodating -- opening just for us when we were in the middle of a family tragedy, for example. The owner is hands-on, and will work with you to make sure you get what you want. More than anything else, this is a place to build a relationship, not just walk in for a quick service. I really love this place. The location is easy to get to and the staff are warm and welcoming. Though it is on a main street, you can usually find parking without a hassle.
