After 6 weeks of growing out my hair, I discovered that I was starting to look like a weiner-head. I did some research (read some yelp reviews) and decided to give TN Beauty Salon a shot. I was sick of hairstylists messing up my hair and I was looking for a new hairdresser to replace my old, inconsistent stylist in Teele Square. I had been admiring Zac Efron's hairstyle a lot lately, so I brought in some pictures and asked T if she could cut my disgusting muffin to look like his. T was excited to try and she took her time on my hair, instead of rushing to finish. It was obvious that she took pride in her job and I could tell she had cut many Asian mullets in the past. About 30 minutes later, I walked out with a great haircut at a very reasonable price. I took advantage of the 30% off special (tuesdays and wednesdays for new walk-ins), which made my haircut extremely cheap (although I tipped almost 100% because I was so satisfied). My hair do almost exactly resembled the hairstyle in the pictures I brought; the only thing different was that I was slightly more handsome than Zac Efron. Simply put: This is the best place to get your hair cut if you are an Asian man. It's probably good if you are non-Asian, or non-male, but I can't say for sure. I will DEFINITELY go back again in a few weeks and I recommend this business for anyone looking for a great haircut. read more

I went back in today for another haircut. I have been so busy that it's been months since my last cut (incidentally at this salon). T is so sweet and just makes the experience so pleasant. She remembered me by face and listened to what I wanted to do with my hair. She even suggested some great tips for my fine (as in thin not hot) Asian hair. My haircut was less than $40 and I didn't have to deal with the pretentiousness of Newbury Street. She even took the time to curl my hair after my cut! This is the second time I've been and I have to say Thao is great. She's easy to talk to, funny, and most importantly a very good hairstylist. I've moved from Japan 3 years ago and have had tried many hair stylist around the greater Boston area and she does my hair correctly. Correctly meaning I don't have to go home and immediately wash my hair and restyle my hair or hope my hair grows faster. I had major hair anxiety after getting multiple bad haircuts in Chinatown (I don't want to look like a Taiwanese pop star, thanks), so after reading yelp reviews I decided to check out TN Beauty Salon. I was very vocal about my anxiety, and thankfully Thao was patient with me and talked me through my haircut. I realize I sound like a head case, but it really helped! She tediously worked through my thick hair to give me a very cute, stylish cut. She had my trust from then on. Since then I've recommended her to many friends, and my husband goes there, too. I love my haircut that I got today. I had super heavy, really long, thick hair. Thao thinned my voluminous hair to something much more manageable, and did lovely layers. I must have lost a good pound or so of hair... and gotten the haircut that I absolutely love. She also spent time after the usual working hours on a Saturday! I'll admit that I went because Kate raved about it, but when I first arrived, I thought, "That's kinda an ugly sign"--superficial, yes--anyhow... moving on. I was gonna go with Janna but ended up with the NEW owner, Tea. At first, I was thinking, "Gosh, I hope I'm not making a huge mistake here" but then learned that Tea worked for a year at an Asian Salon in Quincy so had plenty of experience with Asian hair. Since I've already broken my "one sentence" rule, I'll hurry up and get to the conclusion. Cuts are $32 or a lot cheaper if you walk-in on a Tue, Wed, or Thu. I walked out with an amazing hair cut with layers, style, and sway. Ooh, doesn't it feel glamorous to be swinging your lovely new do around? I felt like I had flashing lights pointing out my wonderful hair as I walked down the street. But then again, I have illusions of grandeur. Point is, I'm goin' back man. And if you need a good hair dresser in a no-frills salon, take my advice and bring those split ends in for a choppin'. ***Update*** The salon is now called "TN Beauty Salon" - and, after round two, I'm still happy with it. read more

Great clean place but a little hard to find. It's close to the Dunkin Donuts. I came to the salon in desperate need of a haircut. I'm extremely picky with my hair but the new owner Thao blew me away. Her name is actually Thao but since most people can't pronounce her name she also goes by "T". I left with light flowing layers, and I'm happy that she took the time in carefully cutting my hair. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays she has a special running for walk-ins: wash and cut for only $15!!! I think that even on the weekends she's running that special too but it would probably be best to call and ask. I have found my new hairdresser and will surely be returning. read more

Thao, the hairdresser/owner, of this salon seems like a sweetie but my experience was marred by the fact that not 5 minutes into my cut, some crazy woman came in and hovered around my chair for what seemed like 10+ minutes, begging Thao to give her a eyebrow wax. It was 6:30 p.m. and I was supposed to be the last appointment of the day. Thao kindly explained to her that she was working on my hair at the moment and it would be a 25 min. wait but this woman kept saying how busy she was and could only wait 10 min. max. She WOULD NOT quit!! Of course, she also had 2 screaming toddlers in tow who would not settle down. It was getting quite awkward as I'm still sitting in my chair with my hair all wet and this woman kept interrupting Thao's cutting to ask questions about pricing, services, etc. Thao even asked her if she'd like to make an appointment for another day, but the woman ended up walking out without even acknowledging the question. Talk about rude! Being so frazzled by the whole experience, I was also not entirely satisfied with the style of my cut. Perhaps this was a communication issue, because I felt that Thao did try to do a diligent job in cutting and checking lengths. The layers just didn't come out the way I wanted them to. Rather disappointed because the salon is convenient to my work and it would've been nice to finally find an Asian hairdresser who understands me and my hair needs. New customers get a 20% discount, so my cut was about $30. The cost is quite reasonable, but sadly, my search for a new stylist continues... read more

I came here because of the positive reviews on yelp and I was very satisfied with my experience. I went in on Tuesday after work to get the walk-in discount. I got there at about 5:30 and there was an appointment before me. I decided to wait since I really needed a hair cut. I'm not the type of person to know exactly what I want when I go in for a haircut, I usually go for something easy to maintain. I gave T, hair dresser, vague descriptions on what I wanted like layers and lighter volume for the summer, and I just told her I trusted her judgment and to make it look good. I was very satisfied with the cut and style. I really appreciated her staying much later than her operating hours and being meticulous with my haircut. She spent over an hour including the wash, cut and simple style. BTW, I have Asian hair and she def knows her stuff. I cut about 8+ inches, it felt like I lost 2 lbs. I went for a cut on the weekend after reading all the good reviews. She seemed a little nervous as we were cutting quite a bit off, but she was very careful and meticulous. I am at work today and have had many many compliments. I think she did a nice job giving me a feminine short cut, and that isn't easy with my very fine straight hair. read more

Really wonderful small salon. TN salon is the kind of small business you should root for. Thao is great, personable, and does very well with my hair. That alone is enough to warrant a 5 star review. But the thing that set the salon over the top is that she successfully cut my 10-month old baby girl's hair for the first time. This is not one of those gimmicky kid salons with bubbles and entertainment. But Thao is a mom with mother's intuition and my baby was happy for the entire cut and when she left the salon, she could see again! Hallelujah! read more

Janna is the head stylist at Elegance Hair Design. I met her for the first time when she was working at another salon, and then followed her when she opened her own in Belmont. Her salon is tucked away and small inside, but what really matters is the way she does hair. She's amazing with color and her prices are great. She's also really nice. I've referred like 10 people to her and everyone keeps going back. Everyone thinks my hair looks amazing after I see her. She's basically Newbury St. quality for Belmont pricing. Most successful haircut I've had in ages. Everyone has noticed it, though I didn't take off tons of hair... and no one ever notices. Thao was really nice and asked lots of questions... and didn't get too annoyed when I explained that I really didn't care, as long as it looked good. She made it look great! I made the HUGE mistake of trying to find another stylist when I moved away from Belmont, even though I loved Thao. I went to a chic salon in Woburn, where I now live (Paul Kenneth Salon, check on my review), and have never regretted anything as much. They butchered my hair. I took my girls to have their hair cut at a less expensive salon. I was impressed with their cuts so I decided to give her a try for myself. I am relatively new to the area and have tried a number of various expensive salons and have come away disappointed every time. I just got back from my cut today and I had to give her my kuddos. Ok, so I am a white girl with TONS of lumpy, fine hair and all I wanted was to find a stylist who can layer it and thin it out. First of all, Tao is just about the nicest person you can imagine. I started out with her assistant giving me the gentlest thorough wash. Tao then LISTENED and asked me a lot of questions during the consultation which is a sign of an attentive professional. She kept working on the style after it was blown out by her very gentle assistant. (No hot air burning my ears, like in other expensive salons) She made sure it was right. I love the cut and I must say, I love her too. I almost don't want to post this b/c I don't want her to get too busy. She is REALLY REALLY good at what she does. Thank God she is here! read more

I'm a busy, working mom, I needed a cut where I could wash and go, but still look professional. I've been scared to go anywhere because of a bad experience a couple years ago at another stylists....but Thao was really good at listening and doing EXACTLY what I wanted. The big test --I had to wash one night, and then the next morning, woke up late so I couldn't really do anything with my hair. It still looked terrific -- all I had to do was brush and go. Thao is amazing. I have had highlights and lowlights before, and even after asking for 'bold and noticeable", I could barely see the color when it was done. I showed Thao a photo of the colors I was thinking of and ninety minutes later, it was PERFECT. Chunky, bold, gorgeous color. My hair feels like silk. I went to TN Beauty based on the reviews I read here on Yelp. Being relatively new to the area, I had NO idea where to go to get a good, relatively inexpensive haircut. So, I turned, as I often do, to the Internet gods--and this time they did not steer me wrong. Not only is this salon about a block from my home, they were able to take me almost immediately--on a Saturday morning. AND---I got the best haircut I have had in years. I have been to several salons in the past five years, none of which has given me what I've asked for. The haircut I am now sporting is amazing, and I am over the moon. I tried going to this salon a total of 4 times, in a span of 3 days. Each time I went 2 of the 4 times, I went at 11:00 AM, an hour after they opened. During both of those times, the man said, "No time". I'm wondering to myself.. How is there no time? Your establishment opened just an hour ago, there is still what? 7 hours left until it closes?? The other two times I went once on the 2nd day at 3:00 PM, the lady said no time, I'm again wondering how there is no time? There is only 1 customer each time I walk in to the salon, I just get really confused. The second time I went on the 3rd day at 5:00 PM, again the lady told me no time. Now I'm thinking that this establishment is pretty much worth my time, and not friendly towards any new customer's for that matter. And unlike what is advertised on yelp, since it says - By Appointment Only: No Then clearly there yelp does not represent this establishment to its entirety, not only do they never have anytime since I walked in each time in the morning, afternoon, and early evening I think they general do not welcome any new customers at all. All in all my experience here is terrible 0/4 If I could go any lower. I would definitely not recommend anyone coming here if all you're going to hear from them is NO for an answer and that they don't have any time. read more

I am very happy with the haircuts and color I've been getting with T. She changed my chin-length bob, which I hated, to a modern cut that even the younger guys at work noticed and complimented me on. I had been going to a very expensive place in Cambridge, but T gave me a better, longer-lasting, and more stylish cut for almost half the price. She blends the layers beautifully and razors the ends, which is more youthful. I brought a picture of what I wanted the first time I went - she seemed a little nervous cutting so much - but I think she is just very conscientious and concerned about making you happy. T is very friendly....read further to find the reality. Friendly till you beocme her customer. Once you start going to her regularly she will show her true colors. I was very excited to see that there was a highly rated salon fairly close to me since I've been looking to replace my old salon. I had a couple of hair cuts here. The first time I was able to just walk and she cut my hair after about an hour of waiting (this was after walking by in the afternoon about 5 times and finding the shop closed every time). She had the dullest clippers anyone has every used on me. I forgave all this since she actually gave me a decent cut for an OK price. I later tried to make another appointment via phone. I didn't end up getting an appointment for 1 month after my first call. I had to get my haircut somewhere else in between haircuts here. My third haircut was a miserable failure. I made an appointment for the late afternoon. I showed up on time only to find the shop closed with no one around. I waited around and tried calling a couple of times with no luck. I guess my search for a salon will continue.... read more
