I came here after a butcher job at a professional salon. They did a correct color, and did a better job and a person I paid $600 to. The movie theater if they don't get it right, there is instructor there who stays next to them and support until it is right. I left there for a fourth of the price and twice the results. I've never in my life written a bad review but this one is a must. I've never felt so disappointed and upset after leaving a salon. The students are so sweet but the instructors are so incredibly rude and undermining. I was told I had a free haircut because they ran late and weren't able to finish cutting my hair my previous appointment. That day, an instructor (lindsey) told me just come in another time for a no charge haircut. Apparently, they didn't put ANY free cut under my name and I had to find the instructor, "remind" her, and this was after trying to convince, Karen (another lady), that I wasn't lying. Unfortunately I think this will be my last time visiting salon institute. I've been coming for a while to get my hair cut and colored. Usually I come in with a crazy request but today I was going for simple. I asked for a hair cut and an over all color, if there was time. My main concern was getting a new cut done. More times than not, I have a great experience and love the results of my style. Today was the opposite sadly. Initially I wasn't sure if I could afford the entire cut and color so I asked to do just the cut, twice. After the stylist discussing price, she assured me that the set price wouldn't change. Long story short. I got one layer in my hair and she looked at me and said is that good?? she barely touched my bangs and when I tried to ask for more to be done with them she rushed through it and got her instructor. So being as fed up and disappointed as I was. I just said yup looks great, paid and left. Sadly this is not the first time I've come in and felt I could've done a better job myself. read more

Got my hair colored in a strawberry blonde balayage with a root smudge from dark brown & red. Came in from a friend recommendation since I had a big work event with lots of photos & videos for marketing coming up! They were able to make a next day appointment with a stylist Amber who is 2 weeks out from graduating so she was more experienced than some students. There was also an instructor (I think her name was Alaina) who was very helpful. They both listened to what I wanted & were not afraid to communicate about what was needed to achieve those results. The atmosphere is what you would expect as far as a school & the total time was 5 1/2 hours for a balayage & cut & style so longer than a typical salon which they did let me know when I booked. Amber made sure to take her time to get the right results and made sure I was cool with whatever she wanted to suggest! Overall I saved over $200 & felt really listened too instead of brushed aside like at some boujie salons. I've come here to get my hair cut 2 times in 2009. Each time, I walked out with a fantastic do that was pretty easy for me to maintain - something that I could step out of the shower, brush and look fabulous when my hair dried. All of this for much less than my local stylist who doesn't leave me liking her work. So what is the scoop, why so cheap? Since its students doing the cutting, its cheaper than any salon, but don't let that scare you! The students are very very knowledgeable and instructors keep a close eye on whats happening. For example, during my first visit, the student cutting my hair wanted to use the inversion technique for layering my (rather long) hair, while the instructor suggested the square layering technique. I've had square layers in the past and it just doesn't work for me. The student defended his opinion and used the inversion, and the result was awesome, much better than any layered cut I've had. If I lived in the area, I would go regularly and let them handle all my hair cutting needs. As it is, every time I am visiting family, I make sure to cut out ~2 hours for a Toni & Guy Academy hair cut. I highly recommend this place. I have no experience with colouring - but I imagine it is on the same level as the cuts. read more

This is a great place to have your hair done if you have more time than money. I recently went in to get my long hair cut short and layered. I had a picture of the cut I wanted on my phone so I can better describe the cut that I wanted. The girl who did my haircut was nice enough, but after describing what kind of haircut I would like (and showing her a picture), she herself decided what haircut would be best. I understand that the stylists are students and may have a limited repertoire of hairstyles that they're most comfortable with, but come on. *Tip: don't be afraid to stop him/her and tell her what you want! I did appreciate how the instructor was floating around and was available to help before each major "step" in the hair cutting process. At the end of my haircut, the teacher took over and fixed it significantly, giving me the haircut I wanted. Honestly, if it wasn't for the instructor presence, I would not be back. The total process (shampoo, cut, straighten, more cut) took about 2 hours. A $12 price tag can't be beat though if you have nothing to do that day and aren't pressed for time. read more

I've been to Toni & Guy 3 times and may go back just because the price is unbeatable. $12 for a haircut, $10 for a deep conditioning treatment + style. I have not had any real complaints about the service being bad, but be aware that it takes a LONG time. We're talking 2 hours for a hair cut. Since these are students, it's going to take them longer to do something that an experienced professional can do instinctively. I've gotten 2 haircuts and I was satisfied with both of them. Not the best I've ever gotten, but I have definitely paid 3x as much, for a worse result. Honestly, I almost like the fact that these are students, because I feel more comfortable asking them questions and telling them what I want--they are less intimidating than some professional stylists, if that makes any sense. The students and teachers are all very nice and I definitely recommend that you give this a shot as long as you know in advance to block out your afternoon! read more

I've been here a few times to get my hair both cut and colored. The girl who cuts my hair has recently graduated, but I will continue to go here because they do have instructors on the floor to help whoever is working on your hair. It does take a bit longer than regular salons, so make sure you have a good couple hours to spend at the academy. If you have the time it's so worth it! I got a cut and color and style for less than I normally pay for a haircut alone. And it was very good! I get compliments all the time on my hair and I tell people to check this place out! read more

I would give this place 0 stars if I could. We got here at 1:50 and it is now almost 4:00!! I got my haircut 10 mins away and it took them 15 mins to cut my hair 12 inches! My hair was longer and is a lot thicker than hers. My sister was only getting 8 inches cut off!! It shouldn't take almost over 2 hours to cut hair!! We thought we would grab a sit down brunch after haircuts but because of the time it took to do 1 haircut we have to grab fast food. We haven't eaten anything for breakfast or lunch! All these other reviews say that an instructor was walking around helping the students but I didn't see any at all floating around. My husband and I have been to Toni & Guy at least 7 or 8 times to get our hair done. We have been pleased with the haircuts/color provided by different students. The reason that I'm giving this review 2 stars is that the customer service at the front desk needs improvement. Every time that I've called to make an appointment I'm put on hold, sometimes for a long time. Then, once the girl decides to get on the phone, she sounds put out to have to make an appointment. Once the appointment is made, the girl doesn't repeat it back to me, I have to ask to make sure I heard the date and time properly. Also, the last time I made an appointment, the girl got it wrong, and when I showed up it was scheduled for another day. I think that girl's name was Jordan. Expect a good hair cut, they just need customer service representatives at the front desk who can do their job in a competent manner. read more

I will admit that I was a little apprehensive about having my hair cut by a student instead of my normal stylist, however I was short on cash and my hair was breaking off. I couldn't wait much longer. I called and was able to land an appointment that very same day -- in fact, within one hour of my phonecall. I came in, and right on time, my student stylist greeted me, went over what I was hoping to have done and discussed it with her instructor. She did a wonderful job waxing my brows and cutting and styling my hair. I will say this process was a little longer than a typical salon visit. Student stylists (should) check in with their instructors often. You will probably not be in and out, but the payoff is worth it. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I had a HORRIBLE experience. About a month ago I went in to get my hair partially highlighted and cut. I am working temporarily in Washington D.C., but am from Toledo and I came home for a short weekend to visit my husband and family. I decided I needed a haircut in the worst way and I had no clue where to get one in D.C. so I waited until I came home to Toledo. I usually go see Elaine at Shear Madness in downtown Sylvania (she ROCKS!!) but she was out of town, so I made the mistake of going somewhere else. I called Toni and Guy Friday night and asked to make an appointment for the next morning. I told them I needed it early because my niece's 2nd birthday party was at 2:00. It was the main reason I had come home to visit. They made me an appointment for 10:00 which to me seemed really reasonable. I got there right on time and waited for about 15 minutes. The girl doing my hair came and got me and then everything fell apart. I understand these are girls (and guys) in training, so by no means was I expecting someone who had years of experience. I've been to the Beauty Bar as well as Kevin Charles back in the day and they did the same training program, but this was completely different. I could tell from the start this girl had had no clue what she was doing and I should have walked away right then and there. The decision of what color highlights to put in my hair took 45 minutes, then the actual foiling took 2.5 hours. I am not even exaggerating. Then I sat there and let the color process for 40 minutes (which is reasonable) but then she took 25 minutes to wash my hair. I mean, come on!!!!! Hanging my head over the bowl for 25 minutes really hurt! Finally, she took me back and started trying to cut my hair. I say "try" because she was 100% clueless. She had a book out and asked me how I wanted it cut. I told her I just wanted really simple layers and for the front to frame my face. I even picked out an actual style in her book for her. The hair cut went like this: She just kept combing, looking at the book, pinning my hair back, combing some more, and then went looking for her instructor. Her instructor would come over and tell her how to do a cut. Then the process started all over again. After 45 minutes of this, and no progress made, I looked at my phone and realized it was 3:30!!! I had been there for FIVE AND A HALF HOURS. For a HAIRCUT and PARTIAL HIGHLIGHTS. My husband had been in the waiting area for me for 2 hours by then. I completely missed my niece's party. I told her I had to go in the middle of my hair cut. I was getting worried she would cut it beyond repair and her instructor refused to quickly finish my hair. I went and paid a ridiculous amount of money for highlights and a hair cut that was hideous. I still gave my hairdresser a pretty healthy tip though because I felt bad for her. I don't think it was her fault, it was the hair academies fault for not training her enough and throwing her out there too early. I felt really bad for her and she apologized to me several times. I went to a hairdresser today in D.C. that fixed my hair. The bottom of it was so uneven she had to cut off 2 inches. She, in the most polite way possible, told me my hair cut was the worst she had seen in awhile. She turned me around and showed me how the back of my hair was uneven. Even to my untrained eye it was obvious. The right side of my hair was an inch shorter than the rest. I will never never never never never never go back to Toni and Guy in Toledo. I had the pleasure of getting my haircut here last week. I had a terrible cut from a stylist that made me look like I had a bowl cut. The teacher looked at my hair and knew exactly what was wrong with it. She showed the student how to fix it and it came out beautifully! The atmosphere is very chic and I couldn't be happier. You can't beat $12 for a great haircut! Much better than going to a cheapo place because the instructors supervise the process and help the student along. This was my first haircut since growing back my hair after having chemo treatments. I explained the situation, that my hair was growing in spotty and that it was still very short. Andrea said that they were more than willing to take on the challenge and she set me up with Zoe. I have to say it's one of the best haircuts that I ever had!! Have gotten two GREAT women's cuts here. Each time, the student asked me key questions about the style (how long does it need to be, which side do I part my hair on), then confirmed that I was happy with the length and style every step of the way. Each student also did not hesitate to ask an instructor for help, which I really appreciated - it seemed that the students really knew the limits of their abilities. The instructors are quite involved and will make sure that the student is doing a good job. I've been very impressed with the quality of the cut and the level of professionalism at this school. Also note that you can pay for your visit by card, but tips are cash-only. Plan to be there for two hours for a women's cut. read more

I decided to come back here and write a review because of a recent horrific experience at the Paul Mitchell school. My mother in law had recommended Toni and Guy to me and I went back in June. I had never been to a school before and I was surprised when I walked in that it felt nothing like a school. It was like a nice salon. I was greeted and they got me a water. I met with my future professional stylist (Hannah Alt) and she was so nice, confident, and knew what she was doing. You first have a consult to figure out what you want. Then her teacher came over and ran through everything she was going to do. She stuck around for the first part of the application of color and stopped back a few time to see if she needed help or had any questions. I felt confident in Hannah and asked if she could wax my eye brows. After consulting with her teacher and filling out another form she waxed me with her teacher watching over, and she did a better job then some professionals I have been to. We continued with my hair. She suggested that I have a conditioning treatment done, so we did that, then when I was ready to be cut the teacher came back over. They discussed what she was going to do, why she was going to do it, and the teacher stuck around for the first few cuts and came by periodically to see how she was doing and if either of us had any questions, She came back and checked Hannah's work and made a few snips herself before I left the chair. Everyone was so kind, friendly, with smiles on their faces, they seemed happy to be there. The whole process took probably close to 4 hours, but I have super thick just past the shoulders length hair, so that isn't too much longer then my usual trips to the salon. I left with a beautiful cut and color, soft deep conditioned hair and a great eye brow wax only spending $45 +tip. That is less then half I would pay at a professional salon. I was very happy with my overall experience at Toni and Guy and tried to go back last Friday. Unfortunately for me they were all booked up so I called Paul Mitchell school since I had so much success with my first school experience at Toni and Guy. It was nothing like Toni and Guy (go see my review of Paul Mitchell Salon). They were not professional at all, and the student seemed to be in charge and have free range, they were not happy or friendly, hardly seen any smiles, or the teacher. I left there paying $75, didn't have my eyebrows waxed and left with blonde fried hair with black roots. Before leaving the instructor finally showed up and said it was horrific and to call to schedule to have it fixed. However walking around with horrible hair that felt like a Brillo pad for almost a week, while they didn't return calls, were rude and mean, and wanted to charge me to fix it. I gave up and had to pay more money to have a professional fix it, sadly having to cut most of it off. I highly recommend Toni and Guy. Even though I am sure Hannah will be graduating soon I can feel confident that the teachers are there doing a great job teaching, and that they are always nearby to help guide the students in the right direction. read more

I got tired of paying a fortune to have my hair colored every five weeks, so I decided to give Tony and Guy a try (no pun intended). I came away super satisfied with the service-the stylist did a great job of coloring my hair, to the point that I got alot of compliments on it. The supervisor checked every step of the way to make certain that the stylist student was doing everything right, and she gave her a few pointers that the stylist enacted. I agree with the other reviewers that the service takes longer than that of "regular" salons, but I got a $150 overall color and highlights for $60, and I am not complaining. I have alot of free time, so the extra time is worth it for me. I highly recommend the Tony and Guy in the Toledo, Ohio area-it puts the super high priced Reve and David Broadway to shame! read more

I have been a customer at Toni and Guy Hairdressing Academy for the past 3 years scheduling visits every 4-5 weeks. I enjoy the facility located on Wilford Dr. because of the atmosphere and professionalism the students create. Even though it is a 40 minute drive from my home, I have had such a great experience with your company that I have referred nearly 10 of my friends, 4 of which have remained regular customers. It is unfortunate, however, that I must inform you that I will no longer be attending this facility. My last visit at Toni and Guy was on Saturday, August 11, 2012. I scheduled an early (8:30 AM) appointment and asked for an advanced student as I usually do. I scheduled this appointment weeks in advance because I am participating in a wedding this upcoming weekend as well as partaking in family pictures we have scheduled with a professional photographer. I have blonde hair and asked for a full highlight. The floor educator asked how regularly I come here, and suggested to get a partial highlight, as well as an all over color to avoid the 5 hours I usually spend here once a month. I agreed, figuring that she was the educator and knew what was best. The student took notes on my hair and what I wanted done to it. I explained that my hair tends to pull brassy colors and would like that omitted as much as possible. I remember she even wrote that statement down on her worksheet right in front of me. 4 1/2 hours and $75.00 later, I walked out of the salon a little uncomfortable. The lighting in the facility always makes my hair look a little different, so I tend to go home and shower after getting my hair done to see my true thoughts on the job. While this has never been an issue before, I came out of the shower with my hair looking highlighter yellow (the same at it had looked in the lighting of your facility). I decided not to panic, and continued to blow dry my hair. To my dissappointment, my hair had a very orange look to it after it was dry. By this time, I didn't have time to go back to Toni and Guy because I needed to head to my job. I work 6 days a week (Monday-Saturday) at an 8:00-5:00 office, as well as a resturaunt. I was mortified as regular customers and fellow employees made fun of my hair throughout the night. It was the worst form of public humiliation I had experienced, but I figured when I called on my lunch break on Monday (August 13th), I would be able to at least get a refund for the humiliation I had to endure. I called Toni and Guy Hairdressing Academy at 12:28 PM on Monday (August 13, 2012) and explained my situation to 3 different people. The hours of the hairdressing academy are from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm every day. Since I work from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday, my schedule clashed with any available time they could fit me in to fix my hair issue before my prior commitments. I need this problem fixed before family pictures and the upcoming wedding so I don't have to remember me looking this terrible. I had to suffer being in public once, and once is enough. I called a salon closer to me that is open after 5:00 pm and am able to attend an appointment this evening, however, I am stuck paying between $80-$100 for this service ON TOP of paying $75 to Toni and Guy for a service that I was not satisfied with. I work in the service industry so I understand that mistakes happen. I simply asked for a refund or credit I could have added to my account so I wasn't wasting time and money on something that unfortunately was not done right the first time. The manager I spoke to informed me that it was a corporate policy that they were not allowed to refund customers. She said she would only refund a mere $7.50 to my account because it "sounded" like all I needed was toner added. The salon I am going to has said otherwise, because my hair will become almost white after applying the toner. When I told the lady it was unfair, she did not even seem to care. The tone in her voice was rude and defensive. She also could not care less when I told her that I would no longer be a customer to the academy. I have spent on average $50 on every visit for the past 3 years. That totals up to $7,800 the total time I have gone to this facility and $2,600 every year. The fact that she does not care for a customer like myself, when I cared so much for the academy that I was willing to refer my friends and family there is astonishing. I could not be more dissappointed and will make sure that I refer my friends, family, co-workers, and regular customers somewhere other than this institute. I am more than upset with Toni and Guy and would have expected a simple credit to my account to make up for the humiliation and time I had to spend for this mistake. I got a haircut, a conditioning treatment and partial highlights and was there for over 5 hours. I knew a student was going to be doing my hair, but that was ridiculous! I sat there most of the time alone, waiting for my hairdresser to come back with her supervisor. On top of that, my shirt was also bleached from the highlights, I'm guessing it leaked through the apron. I will not be going back or referring anyone to go there. I have been several times, but the last time I went, the sweet girl who was doing my hair was great, and discussed with me everything I wanted, then her instructors kept coming over and telling her to change this change that, I was worried then, the girl did great and kept her word to me that she would do as I asked being the client, I felt bad for her, I felt like she was being bullied around. There was definitely a dislike for this young lady, who was very kind and upfront. I left with my hair cut that I wanted thanks the to young lady doing it, but felt bad that she was afraid of being in trouble for giving the client want they want. I would go to this girl off site to get my hair done but not to the academy, I just cant watch them bully someone else around. So just an FYI to the Instructors, you may think no one can notice your behavior towards someone, but we can, stop bullying people and create a positive place for them to learn and create, isn't that why your in business, besides the fact that they are paying to be there and learn technique from you, I hope they are not learning behavior or treatment of others there. I have to say, this place is far better than any "high-end" salon I've ever been to. After my first time here getting a hair cut, I will never go anywhere else. First even if the student is a little uncertain of what they are doing, they never hesitate to ask for help. I went in to this knowing they were students, so not expecting anything spectacular, but I genuinley enjoyed my experience. I've been going there for years now, and every girl who graduates recommends me to someone knew that i love! The girls are young, and know the latest trends. The intructors never let you leave unhappy (which i love) The prices are rediculously low!!! $12 for a haircut! If i want a pedicure its only $20! Any girls who are pedi repeats know how much money this saves. One of my favorite things here are that they do facials. An Hr long for twenty something dollars. I knew a few friends who had been here. I had successfully (2 years) let my hair grow out beyond my shoulders (had a really short style). So, I had a 'clean palette' for someone to cut and style. Walked in with no appointment and was greeted in a professional manner. Waited briefly (about 5 minutes) for Ben and we discussed what I was looking for. He was helpful and we selected a style from one of his books. I am not chatty when getting my hair cut, and I just wanted him to focus on his craft, which he did, swimmingly. The instructor was always roaming and checking on the students, which was nice. And Ben would make sure she checked him regularly and answered any questions he had along the way. I appreciated how both of them would also ask me questions. All in all, I had a good experience. I did not go in there with huge expectations. The cut I got was not like the photo, especially the way it was dried and styled. But, anytime I have ever had my hair professionally cut, the first thing I always do is go home, wash it and restyle it. Most times, while I like the cut, I Do Not like the way it is styled. I had about 3 inches cut off. It's a week later and I am still having trouble getting it to look anywhere near what the photo looked like, but it is presentable. I would go back - more prepared next time - with a selected hair style and photos showing several angles. The good thing about hair - It grows back. Ben was great. I had a fantastic first time pedicure experience here. Upon entering the salon, it looked super clean, sleek, and highly professional. The desk staff was very kind and welcoming. I only had to wait a few minutes to meet the girl that would be providing my service. Allyson was so sweet. She brought me back to the nail room and asked lots of questions to make sure I felt comfortable. What I appreciated most was how careful Ally was when prepping, disinfecting, and cleaning up. I felt very safe. The process took about an hour, and her instructor was very positive and had a pleasant attitude. My ONLY complaint was that I had to wait about 5 minutes to pay for my service because the woman working the desk was also trying to manage the phones, which were ringing off the hook.
