I've spent more than my fair share of time and money in salons across multiple cities and states, and Salon MINK is still one of my absolute favorites. I first came here as a Bobcat--IYKYK. Young and broke, but protective of my curls--and my very first stylist was Ray Reeves. The only things bigger than his talent were his personality and his heart. I trusted him instantly, and if you know anything about curls, that says everything. I moved away after graduation, but when I landed back within driving range, I didn't hesitate--clocking 45 minutes each way and passing plenty of other salons along the way. (Bombshell Beautique--you could never.) By then, Ray had passed, and I began seeing Corey Casey, his partner and co-owner. It was immediately clear why they built this place together. Corey is every bit as kind, talented, and grounded. I give him a general idea, he hands me a mimosa, and then works his magic. Shorter, longer, lighter, darker, touch-ups, tighter curls, or full blowouts--I've never left looking or feeling anything less than fabulous. From the neck up, anyway. One of the things I appreciate most is that Corey takes his craft seriously--ongoing education, advanced training, and a commitment to excellence not just for himself, but for the whole team. So no matter who you're booked with, you're in good hands. I even got my boyfriend to start coming here, because they've got a solid barber, too. The salon itself is always welcoming, always stylish, and somehow still relaxed. The staff is lovely, the product lines are legit, and the whole experience feels like a proper treat without ever being stuffy. If I had to complain? The parking lot! Tiny, cramped, and shared with other businesses. But hey--that's downtown San Marcos, so leave five minutes for creative parking. Ten if you've ever failed a driving exam. Also? The bathroom is a Dolly Parton shrine worthy of pilgrimage on its own. Suffice it to say: this salon understands the assignment. Sadly, I've moved away again and (begrudgingly) found a new salon and stylist. But there will always be a big, glamorous, perfectly highlighted place in my heart that holds Ray, Corey, and Salon MINK. read more

I switched to this salon when my old stylist disappeared and I loved it. I recently had one of my new stylist's coworkers fill in and things didn't go as I imagined. I hesitated to complain because I'm not a well established client and I feel uncomfortable complaining. When I worked up the courage to go in, the owner was really kind and helped me himself. He didn't make me feel crazy or like a problem and that meant the world to me, even more than having my hair fixed my way. So thank you Salon Mink! Alliyah was wonderful! I have long, straight hair, and wanted visible layers without it looking choppy. Honestly, I thought that might be too much to ask. I didn't think I could find a better stylist, so I scheduled an appointment with Alliya, and she blew my mind! She is not only polite, and highly skilled, but she exceeded all of my expectations. I've gone to Salon Mink a few times to see Sam. She's really great! I've gone to her at least twice, maybe three times. She's very practical and I'm honestly not great with knowing or explaining what I want and she's patient and helps me realistically sculpt my vision. If you are within 30 minutes of San Marcos, I'd definitely say go see her! I've never done it, but salon mink also does make up and lashes if you are looking for that. read more

I've had such day and night experiences here...from 1 star to 5, so I guess 3 it is! Starting with the good - there is a back room for massages and another one for facials/eyebrow waxing - both of those appointments went really well, highly recommend! Unfortunately, my hair and makeup appointments went pretty badly, so I would definitely recommend going elsewhere for those services. My first time there, I was told that the stylist I'd made an appointment with didn't work there anymore?! So they said they had someone else who was available...they did not tell me that this person did not have their license and was still in school..I found this out as I was having my blowout, but I figured, how can you mess up a blowout? It is, in fact, possible. They asked for help from someone else one time, but that person didn't have time/didn't seem to want to help- I should have just not been charged. It was just a mess. I gave them another chance and made makeup appointments for my mom and I on a big celebratory day. The makeup artist changed to a different name at the last minute. Then that person showed up late and then took 3 hours when we'd been booked for only 2 (makeup application time is listed on their booking site, so we booked accordingly) - we were late to our own event. It's unfortunate because this salon has a great location, super cute interior, really friendly front desk staff- but none of this matters when it comes to offering quality, fair services that are communicated correctly :/ read more

I usually stay very quiet because I'm freaking out but we talked instantly. It's been 11 years and my love for Salon Mink & Corey Casey has not faded. Even though I moved 1,800 miles away to NYC, I still find myself back at Salon Mink at least once, if not twice, a year for highlights and a trim. It's hard to find a hairstylist you love and trust so you don't want to let that go regardless of the road blocks or long commute. Plus, hair is SO expensive in NYC!! I have long, fine hair and have pretty much been doing the same variation of highlights and cut since I was a teen, just more natural looking over the years. Corey was the person I was recommended to by a coworker because he's especially great with long hair, and I have been loyal to him since. Except for two appts here in NYC where I sadly couldn't make it back to San Marvelous. But shhhhh!! I have seen the salon grow from the size of one store front to two when the neighboring business closed. Their offerings as well as chair count have expanded over the years as well. In addition to haircuts and hair color, they also offer hair extensions, makeup applications, eyelash extensions, waxing, and even massage! The look of the salon has also blossomed since it's 2008 opening. Salon Mink just keeps getting bigger, better and more beautiful as time goes on. I went in with long hair and came out with an amazing short cut!! I was tired of long hair and wanted a change. I'm new to SM so I didn't know who to ask for when I made the appointment. The kind receptionist made me an appointment with Danielle and she did an amazing job!! Danielle was super nice and very informative. I have had haircuts in the past that only look cute after the hairdresser styles it and it's never cute again. Not with Danielle, she styled my hair more naturally and pretty. I came in for a shoulder length cut and went home to cry immediately. When I showed the picture of what I wanted on myself, she glanced at it and got to chopping. There were no follow up questions or clarification. I had to clarify what I wanted as I went multiple times. I just didn't feel heard or think any kind of trust was established in this visit. The work was done, and so of course I should have to pay for it, but it is telling to me that she has virtually no reviews. Came here because my mom pressured me to cut my obnoxiously long, dark brown hair. Was really dreading it because I NEVER have a good experience at salons. I usually go in with instructions and the stylist/colorist does what they feel best. Usually ends with me crying in my car. So, of course, mother knows best. She comes to see Sam for her own hair cut/color. We arrived and were promptly greeted by a very sweet, engaging receptionist. Sam came to get me and listened to me complain about how I NEED to keep my long hair. I showed her some pictures of balayage highlights and expressed my fears of commitment. Rebecca Rice is a literally an angel on earth. She continues to exceed my expectations with every visit.
