My hairdresser is quite simply The Best Ever. I walk in, she says ok let's get creative and have fun, and next thing you know, I have a completely new and unique hairdo! Literally, people stop me in the street to ask where I get my hair done- she's that good :) Honestly, love coming here. I used to love Pure, and I think on the top-level of stylists it's still good. But take my advice and don't waste your time with Juniors. I've had 5 different ones over the last 3 years, and not one of them knew what to do with a blowdryer. It's a shame because they used to train their staff so you could always depend on a good style, but that is simply not the case. You can't "fix" a badly done blowdry by spraying on tons of product or a curling iron -- in 15 minutes, it will just look flat and frizzy. I hope they can get it together but I won't be back again. read more

I needed a nice haircut for a great price, and in a nice enviroment, and this place did it for me. I was very impressed that they were billigual there were no language barriers and the staff was extremely friendly! You can decide who cuts your hair from a junior stylist to a senior, and you know what the junior stylist performed very well I had Gerevive, I love my new hair cut for only $35! I will definatly come here again, even if I am from NYC because its worth the trip for a nice cut. This place should open a shop down here. read more

I was scheduled with Caroline (a Master stylist) as my first time and I decided to go for a short bob cut. It took more than an hour, but only because it was not busy (it was a Monday) and I felt she wanted to be as meticulous as possible. I left the salon feeling satisfied. However, when I looked in the mirror at home, I wished I cut a little more. So I called the salon the next day to book another appointment with Caroline. I went again on Wednesday, and this time left the salon happier. She did not charge me again! read more

Disclosure: *This is a long post. If you don't want to read it, the moral of this story if you decide to go there is: Confirm the prices as you book the appointment, and whatever it says on the website, ignore it. I accompanied a friend to get her hair cut. The hairdresser gave a decent cut, the owner stepped in to resolve the issue, but the receptionist (cashier) was a total nightmare. Although it was not my haircut, I became involved in the issue because the she was being rude, unprofessional and lied to my friend. It was appalling and this situation was alarming enough to write this review to make sure it wouldn't happen to someone else. I met her while she was getting her hair cut, because we were going to have a coffee after. The stylist did a decent cut on her, maybe could have tried styling it different, but it was ok. The problem started after he had led her to the reception to pay. After he walked away, we were standing there and after punching in the total, she says to my friend that will be $89. The issue: my friend did research online from the salon website, the services section showed ranking of stylists ( junior, senior, or master) and range of prices. My friend has a pixie cut short hair so she wanted a decent cut, but the master price which said $60+ was not what she wanted. The Senior pricing stated $45-60 on the site, so called to make an appointment for the same day, 1st time customer. The receptionist asked which level, and she replied senior stylist, and appt was for 430pm. My friend then let me know how excited she was and the price was in her range, and the salon was near my work. What earned the single star here, was 100% about attitude from the receptionist. After letting my friend know about the price, it startled her, because that was not at all what she expected. The receptionist apologized but said she couldn't do anything about it. My friend said that when she called in, she had requested the senior stylist, and then quoted the website prices. Receptionist explained again that she couldn't change that. She then proceeded to say, what am I supposed to do, make the stylist lose money? I then said, and my friend is supposed to pay for the mistake by whichever person booking the appt? She said there was no mistake, the stylist is a senior stylist. So I inquired why is his price higher than a senior stylist? She then said, I don't know why, but I know his price is $89 for the cut. Then she said besides, the prices are wrong on the website, it's really old and its too difficult to change the prices. (Disclosure: my friend happens to be a art director in web design) So at that point my friend is baffled, because this still isn't her fault, yet this receptionist is not making any exceptions. The receptionist claimed that there was a disclaimer on the website (ps as of tonight there is not, and I took a screenshot of their pricing) Then she goes on to say, and by the way, Pure is a high-end salon, our masters charge over $100, if you wanted a $20 haircut you shouldn't have come here. It was this condescending remark that wishes they should get 0 stars. My friend was almost going to pay it to just get out of the situation, but I couldn't let that happen. I asked again if there was someone in charge that we could speak to, she said no. I said that this needs to be resolved. The receptionist continued to say that my friend should have verified the pricing when she called in and asked for a senior stylist, suggesting that it was her responsibility to double check the pricing. My friend replied that if she is reading it on the website, she didn't see the need to. At the end of this story, who I imagine as the owner, came out and told the receptionist to not charge her, took my friend by the hand and apologized, while the receptionist was giving details to him like our website prices are old right? She didn't confirm the pricing on the phone with us... my friend then explained the situation very clearly, she is not unhappy with the haircut, she just didn't expect to be charged that much and had she known the actual price, she wouldn't have asked for that. She told the owner, she was willing to pay $60 as a compromise. He said that it would be taken care of, but she said she is fine with paying that. so the receptionist took her card, charged her the money, and offered no apology for her condescending comments. For the owner and the stylist: my friend would have given them many more stars, but for the overall experience, she said she definitely won't be going back there, even though they resolved it. read more

I went to Salon Pure on a whim due to some of the reviews I'd heard. Big mistake. My hair stylist whom shall remain anonymous was .... Frustrating. I would ask him questions about what he thought would suit my face and he would ignore me. I wanted to discuss what type of haircut I wanted and he just started cutting without really saying anything to me. He gave me the worst haircut I've EVER had so much so that one of my friends literlaly burst out laughing right after over dinner. I had made it clear that I didnt like flat hair, yet he flat ironed my hair so close to my head, it was ridiculous. And the list goes on and on. Unfriendly atmosphere, stylists who don't listen, and spending a big chunk on money in return for utter frustration are not my idea of a 5 star salon. Will definitely not return. I went here because of the rave reviews on yelp, and saw Stephan, a master stylist... they have three levels of stylists, and master was the highest (and most expensive!) I wanted the opinion and precision the title master stylist suggests, and I got exactly what I wanted. it was a bit pricey, but I thought it was totally worth it. I didn't know if I should go short or long or what style would look best on me. Stephan recommended length, cut, style, and even suggested I switch the side I part my hair on to better suit my face (which, surprisingly, was a HUGE improvement). I LOVE my cut and so does everyone else. he parted my hair a little more than my cowlick likes it to be when he cut it, and I found there were a few strands that were a little too long now that I'm styling it myself. I stopped back at the salon to have someone touch it up... Stephan was there and touched it up, fixed the back (which I didn't style as well as I could have.. I was in a rush that morning) and gave me a couple styling tips to help me with styling the back free of charge. so yeah. I love my hair and even though it was expensive, it was worth every penny. I'd definitely go back if I'm ever in montreal again, and I will seek out Stephan if he's in NYC and my stylist back home can't follow the cut. can't vouch for the junior and senior stylists, but the master totally lives up to his title. read more

It is a good salon, fast service but the person who washed my hair was err...kind of not enthusiastic abt her job...alas who would be truly interested in washing others hair anyway. I was just visiting Montreal for a few days on business and decided I needed a haircut, so I sent a message to my friend who lived in MTL for a while (now he's in Toronto) where he used to go, and he sent me to Salon Pure. Nestled on the 4th floor of the bourgeois Cours Mont-Royal, it's like a little bit of heaven tucked away in downtown Montreal. It's a few floors above the shops, so you don't feel like you're in a mall at all - and given the upscale nature of the boutiques, you're not getting your usual Eaton Centre foot traffic here. The open-air atmosphere from the reception desk (which is shared with the neighboring Spa DIVA which I will write about soon!) and friendly service had me from the the instant I stepped off the escalator. It was easy to schedule an appointment (I asked for a specific stylist, otherwise I'm sure they could have seated me immediately), and a few hours later (after some frantic shopping!), I was back. Dominic came to get me, introduced me to Lissa (my friend's stylist that I requested) and showed me to my seat and took me to get my hair washed. Very nice guy, and he gave a great shampoo & scalp massage! Another big plus for a trip to the salon! When I returned, he asked me what I wanted to drink (I spied mimosas & vino around the room, but I restrained myself and had a glass of water), and then Lissa got to work. She was absolutely adorable and gave me the perfect cut I was looking for. Seriously, I've gone to a lot of salons, but she "got" me almost instantly - I'm SO happy with my cut! We chit chatted a bit, but my brain was running a mile a minute with some other business stuff I had to do, but I can guarantee, anytime I have a trip to Montreal looming on the horizon, I will wait an extra week or two to schedule something with Lissa! The prices were great (compared to the NY prices I'm used to!) and I think everyone deserves a little pampering... this would be a MUST on my Montreal list... can't wait to go back! read more

I got a recommendation to cut my hair here with a girl named Laurance (not sure about the spelling but is sounds like the guy name). I got a time within the next couple of days - no waiting for weeks here! I arrived and got ushered to the hair washing place and had my hair washed before my stylist looked at my hair (which seems to be the Montreal-norm). Don't they want to see how my hair parts? If my hair is curly? Wavy? Nope. Ok. I look best in some sort of unruly bob, so I tried to describe that to her. The hair cut I ended up with was pretty cookie-cutter hair dressing school - like it was a decent hair cut, but not adopted to suit my type of hair and my taste. Like it was polished but bland. Not bad - just not very exciting. I think it cost around $50. read more

I've been back in Montreal for 2 months now after a 4 year absence. I've been looking for a good hairdresser for me ever since. I must say that I'm still looking. The salon is very nice looking. It's vast and has an upscale feel to it. I'm a male and had a junior stylist that will remain nameless. I asked for a faux-hawk. I didn't really like the cut that she gave me. I hear that there is 60+ hairdresser in that salon. I will take an appointment with another hairdresser next time as the price is reasonable and the salon enjoyeable. read more

It was okay, I guess. I went here based on all the rave reviews and was definitely dissapointed. I got a senior stylist, I can't remember his name, but the whole thing was really hum-drum. Nothing terrible but nothing amazing. I asked him to give me advice on a haircut because I wanted something new, and he gave me...the same haircut I had had before and told me it was fine. Um, okay. He also told me I had dandruff and needed a new shampoo or my hair would fall out (??), I asked him for a recommendation, and he said head and shoulders. Oh great, never heard of that! For styling, he spritzed my hair with loreal hairspray and curled it. That's it. I don't know, but I expect at a high-end salon to get high-end products? Definitely not worth it. I'd highly recommend Dan Lafleche as a stylist. I've always been happy with my results, and he's likable, friendly and chatty. I also find the prices competitive, but perhaps it's different for female cuts and styles. Somehow I've never ordered a drink when I've gone, though - weird neuroses about that. read more

A couple of months back the conversation of hair issues came up at work and a colleague of mine (former hair care professional) told me that all my woes would be over if I consulted with Monia Grieco at Salon Pure. I booked a consultation and explained to her that ever since I started dying my hair and cutting it short, I had not been able to find a consistently good colorist (+ hair stylist). She took the time to explain to me what solutions she had in mind and even referred me to her hairstylist colleague Leo for the cuts. They really took the time to ask questions about my preferred taste, face shape and get a feel for what would be best for my fine hair, not a short order!! I now have a color and haircut that feels cute and feminine and that really suits me :) I continue to be completely blown away by the expertise and customer service I continue to be provided at every visit, cheers!! I am not the first reviewer to say that If you want to pay extra money to be disrespected, go to this salon. I had booked an appointment for highlights and I needed it to be done in a private part of the salon. they agreed at first and were nice. But they canceled my appointment 45 minutes before the appointment and when I asked them for a new one, they started treating me with disrespect. They asked me to come to the salon right away so they can do me a "favor", and once I got there, I figured they had made a mistake and thought I wanted a haircut instead of highlights. So they wasted my Sunday. Unfortunately, I booked an appointment again and confirmed with the manager and I was promised a private highlight session. They canceled again!!!! I'm a Salon Pure veteran.. been going there for years now and always see Brian, who works like a maverick and always knows what I want even before I say it. I need to book him a few days in advance, and yes, the price is hefty, but I shell out for the next three months of worry-free hair. I love the new layout of the hair-washing room, the white chairs are quite comfortable (although a little low), and I haven't had too many bad washes. Although my definition is predicated on the fact that the washer can do my whole head without getting water in my ears- and I usually have to specify that beforehand. The hair mask they do is wonderful - I have very thick hair and this keeps me hydrated for a good month, and at $20 it's hard to say no. My only beefs are the following: consistancy, consistancy, consistancy. They should be following the same steps all of the time - do a great wash, take the drink order, set the person down at their staton. And they rarely get it perfect...last time I was there my shirt was damp from a messy wash job, I got a lemonade when I ordered an iced tea, etc. But when Brian gets to do his thing, the end result is somewhat of a masterpiece. So not to set the bar too high - but I'm happy with my stylist, pleased generally with the service, but then again, there's barely anything to improve on. Except the price. But you have to accept that going in... and ask to confirm everything with the front desk, the day before. Happy styling! read more

I went to this placed based on reviews that I had read from multiple sites. I had highlights and a cut done by two different stylists. The man I had for the color was fast and efficient, very talented and the color turned out great. Wasn't very clear on the price for this however. I had a junior stylist who was asian (sorry don't know names) and was was lovely. Took awhile with her cut however I would rather her have done that as she was cross checking everything and it was possibly the best cut and blow dry I have ever had. The salon service was pretty average but I have come out with great hair at a reasonable price so I am impressed. read more

This is a review for Lisa, the hair stylist. I asked for 2 inches cut off, she took 5 inches. I asked for no hairspray, she used a ton of hairspray and lied saying it was a thermal water. The haircut is very old fashioned, with layers ranging from 6 inches in length to 20 inches (this is not the time of Jennifer Aniston anymore!). When I asked her to fix some kinks in her blow dry, she refused and insisted that it looked fine. She then tried to charge an extra 15$ for the blow dry after the set! The entire time she was complaining that she was missing her appointment at the apple store. I walked out in a ponytail and washed my hair as soon as I got home. I will be in a bun for the next 2 months. So, go there are your own risk. read more

Fortunately for me, he was honest in telling me that I was not allowed to say what I liked, and that he would decide what cut I needed, and no, he had no pictures to show me of what he was planning to do. So I left. I am giving the place 2 stars because at least he was honest ahead of time about the fact that he wasn't interested in giving me what I wanted. I had a dreadful experience with a DIVA hair colorist. When I asked what he intended to do I was informed that he knows and I am not to tell him what to do. When I continued to ask he actually put down the brush and threatened to not continue. It was like being held hostage and I was supposed to sit there and accept it. I took a friend to seek the advice of a master colourist/stylist, as this is the person who once coloured my hair. This is truly a master, Nick, one who only needs to take one look at your hair and knows EXACTLY what to do in terms of cut, style and colour! A man who is MORE than willing to work with you in terms of your preferences and lifestyle. Absolutely NO pretense, attitude or snobbery, and a very lovely person to boot. His prices are approx. $150 for a colour and an additional $50- $75 for a cut/style. Not cheap, but remember, you're getting the services of a master colourist/stylist. The Spa Diva is right next door for the mani/pedi/facial/massage & botox set. read more

Well it's ok, you won't get outstanding, you wont' get WOW, you will get decent service. The owner is cheap. There is an indoor parking lot and all you get back is like $2 or $2.50 on a $16 parking fee. I mean $2? that doesn't even pay for 1/2 hour. Cheap. Cheap. Cheap. i went to pure after having a fellow student recommend the place and was not disappointed at all, quite the contrary. the staff was very sweet i was well greeted, and royally treated: it immediately made me feel comfortable. because i didn't know what i wanted with my hair, i was quite a challenge for Andrew, who quizzed me and examined my hair at length before proposing i dispose of my long hair and replace it with a fresh short haircut (which i think was a bold move on his part -given the length i had reached). the new cut is easy to manage, also looks awesome when styled, frames my face perfectly, really goes well with my looks and attitude. in the end i'll highly recommend this salon, and Andrew who cut my hair. this boy knows what he's doing. read more

This is a large salon located in a high end boutique mall. My girlfriend and I are visiting from Vancouver. We went for spa at DIVA (which was fab) and decided to book a last minute blow dry. Cynthia is originally from south of France, and literally moved here two weeks ago. She is an excellent stylist and though she is strictly French speaking you can sense get passion for hair! I'm still slightly devastated by my experience at this salon. If I look in the mirror, I may begin to cry. It was basically out of sheer desperation that I decided to try this place. I have a short asymmetrical bob that needs almost constant pruning or it begins to look like a strange reverse mullet. I typically go to the Aveda Salon on Boul. Saint-Laurent (which is absolutely fabulous), but because of my busy schedule, I simply couldn't make it there within the next week. So, I decided to risk it and try something new. BIG MISTAKE! When I got to the salon, I got there 5 minutes early for my appointment at 2pm thinking I would be seated quite soon. I didn't get to sit down in the chair until 2:30pm. I didn't mind waiting, actually; but I had an inkling that something was going to go wrong. When I got called in, I didn't meet with the stylist to consult what I wanted for my hair. Instead, I went straight to a hair wash with an assistant (which was really quite lovely), and THEN met the stylist. I'm confused as to why the hair dresser wouldn't want to see what my original hairstyle looks like dry. To me, it would be logical that the stylist would have an interest in knowing how a client's hair falls, how long it is, what the texture is like, etc. But nope! This guy (who will remain nameless) didn't seem to care what my hair looked like. When I sat in the chair, he immediately asked what I wanted. I told him I wanted to maintain my asymmetrical cut (longer in the front, shorter in the back; longer on my right side, and shorter on my left). Because my cut can be kind of confusing to explain, I drew it for him to make sure he FULLY understood what I wanted. He nodded and said he understood. Because the arms of my glasses were interfering with his work, he told me to remove my glasses. Unfortunately, I can't see without them, so I submitted to that fact that my final haircut would be a surprise. When he was done and I was allowed to put my glasses on, I was speechless. First of all, he cut it WAY too short. It was NOT asymmetrical. The front was slightly shorter than the back (which looks ridiculous). He could tell I was on the verge of tears and asked me why. I told him it was not what I wanted, that I wanted an asymmetrical cut. And THE WORST HAPPENED.... he said, "oh no....I forgot." SERIOUSLY?!?!?! I had explained everything to him! I had drawn it out for him! How can someone forget what haircut he or she is supposed to be cutting? I am still extremely upset by the whole experience and will DEFINITELY not return. read more

I have been going to the salon for several years now. I am addicted to it. It has great service and it has the best stylists. They can create a very classic look or very eccentric look. It wins prestigious awards to prove their excellence year after year. The masters travel outside the country to give classes. You can see some of their great work in magazines. I am also addicted to it because of the head massage that comes with it when they wash your hair and you get to enjoy a cappuccino, tea, juice or glass of wine while the master is at work. There is indoor parking for a fee but at a cost of 6$ after 4:00 most days. After having toured Montreal in search of the best result, I stopped here. I went to Salon Pure in preparation for my wedding, thinking that I was getting the best of the best (especially for that price!) BIG MISTAKE!!! I got my hair cut a week before my wedding, and while the cut is well structured and will look nice once it grows in, it was way too short. I then had an appointment to get my make-up done. It was with a different stylist, so I decided to give it a second chance. Thank goodness I went for a trial run ahead of time, because I walked out of there looking like a clown. I had specifically asked to enhance my eyes, but the end result was that I had tons of eye shadow on the side of my eyes, very little colour on my actual eyelids, and the make-up "artist" only put mascara on the tips of my eyelashes (I have have blonde eyelashes, so you pretty much don't see them if I don't have mascara root-to-tip). When I brought up these issues, the guy just responded that it would look fine in the pictures. Never mind the fact that I didn't believe him for one second, but I felt like saying "excuse me, I also want to look good on the day of my wedding, NOT just in the pictures!" I was embarrassed to walk out of there and even got a couple of "what happened to your face" looks while walking home. Luckily, I went to the Bay to pick up a lipstick at Lancôme on my way home, and their make-up artist fixed the horrible job that the other guy did FOR FREE. Needless to say, I promptly cancelled my wedding day hair and make-up appointments, as well as my mother's and maid of honour's, and booked the Lancôme guy instead. Throughout all this, I have learned a valuable lesson: a hip, modern image and high prices definitely do NOT mean that you will get quality service! read more

Bonjour, A cut + a blowdry costed me $58 (taxes + 15% tip included) with a junior stylist. They have 3 levels of stylists: Junior, intermediate and master. I got a bang and Valeria, my stylist, told me I could go and get it refreshed anytime I wanted for free without having to make an appointment. The salon mainly uses Kerastase products for shampoo and styling. They offer you complimentary water, cafe latte or wine. Overall experience was good but I felt a bit rushed. I've been in Montreal for 12 years, and so far I have not found "THE" hairdresser for me. I head about Pure, and I decided to give it a try... twice.. in the hopes of finding a professional and experienced hairdresser. The first time when I called, I spent a quite some time on the phone with the receptionist asking for help to chose the right hair dresser for my type of hair, length ad style. I was prepared to pay for the master hair stylist. I wanted a medium-short hair, angled bob. The receptionist recommended William. I came in with rather high expectations, master hair stylist at Pure sounded promising... NOT. I explained very clearly to William what kind of hair style I was looking for, I brought pictures.. but he seems not too interested, and started cutting. I explained to him that I need shorter layering to give volume to my hair in the back.. and you know what he said? "Your scalp is uneven in the back, and if I make your layers shorter, they will look uneven, because your head is uneven.. here touch it". For over 25 years, I've been living perfectly fine, and then have a "master" hairstylist tell me this! How rediculous is this! My layers have always been shorter and have always been ok.. So long story short, he cut my hair the way he wanted, not the way I asked and it was awful.... not to mention it costed my over $85.00. A year or so after, I decided to give Salon Pure another try. I came in after work and asked for a senior hair stylist to do a trim - that's it - just a trim. The receptionist recommended Brian. My hair was washed, the helper walked me to the chair and I waited for about 10 minutes for a hair dresser with wet hair. And then he walks in.. with a cell phone, looking as if someone distracted him from an important phone call.. he slowly walks in and puts the cellphone on the couter in front of me - to me that's unprofessional to say the least. I explained to him, that I am trying to grow out my hair, so I just need a trim, without changing the style or length too much. I specifically asked not to make my hair too "thin" at the bottom, to keep the volume. He said ok and started cutting. He trimmed the length and then started shaping the hair. He started using a techique, where he twists the hair strand and then takes off some of the hair with scissors... I told him that this technique does not work on my hair, because it is curly and because I want to keep the volume. He looked at me, stopped for a few minutes, and did not say anything.. was looking extremely surprised and it looked like he does does not know how else he can cut my hair! This really scared me, and I asked him to continue.. thinking if he uses a technique that he knows it will be better if he uses a technique that he does not know well... The result? All of the volume was taken off, my hair looked completely flat, and it took me 4 month to fix what his "technique" had done to my hair. Never again, and will not recommend this salon to any one! Had a horrible experience at Pure. My hair was great, however, I am extremely disappointed in their customer service. I will not be returning and have let their other clients know the situation. I would not recommend their salon to anyone. Additionally, they charge you an extra fee to have your hair blow dried. This is a service that should be included. It is a ridiculous money grab from the salon. read more
