A real disappointment. I asked for an asymmetrical bob, coming in shorter at that back and longer at the front - reaching my clavicle. I should have been able to tie up my hair. I can't tie up my hair, it's longer at the back than the front, and it's not in any way an asymmetrical cut. In other words, a total "F" for listening skills. I'm deeply angry with the hair stylist, who clearly didn't want to hear what I was asking for. Won't be going back any time soon - especially given how much they ask for. read more

Had a mediocre experience last year but decided to give it another try due to the convenient location. I'm glad I did because the whole experience way great! Book anytime outside of December and June (busy due to holidays and graduations) and you shouldn't have a problem get fit in even a week beforehand. They are quite busy at times but will always answer the phone or you can go in person. Very professional and clean. I had my haircut with Chloe who is very chatty and bubbly and did a great job. She asked me before every styling decision which I really appreciate. This made the big difference for me as I like to walk out feeling like it was worth it. If you like to be pampered they have an optional massage before your haircut and an optional makeup touch up afterwards. Big plus was that all the staff is friendly and bilingual! read more

Moved to Monkland about 4.5 months ago. This is a great, walking-distance from me. I received a manicure, massage, waxing, hair styling and make-up services from this spa. I liked each one of my visits, and can't complain, the only time I was just a little bit disappointed is during my hair style; it wasn't like the picture although it was still great and I received a lot of compliments. I have been here a few times for colour and cut. The service is ok overall but the last time (1.5 momy colourist burnt my left ear and scalp when dying my hair. I mentioned at the time my skin felt like it was burning and she shrugged it off saying it wasn't the dye but maybe the cream she used to protect my skin. Wrong. The girl who washed my hair also must not have done a good job rinsing. At the end I woke up the next day to burnt ears and scalp. I've been using cortisone to soothe it the last few months and it still hasn't healed. read more

I had a pretty good experience here. When booking the appointment on the phone, they asked details about the haircut I wanted, and gave me an estimated prize straight away. I like that transparency. In other salons, I feel I never know how much I am going to pay. The haircut itself was good - not the best I have ever had, but definitely solid. The hairdresser asked for my opinion many times throughout the process, and accommodated a change in opinion halfway through the cut, when I realized that maybe I didn't want to go so radically short right now after all. I booked an appointment with a senior stylist and am shocked at the haircut I received. I was speechless. It's very random, not at all what I asked for. I came prepared with pictures and a realistic view of the kind of haircut that my thin short hair could manage. She was completely uninterested in my wants. My husband said that it looks like a child's haircut. Not the look I was going for... It's well worth traveling the usual 30 minutes to see my usual hairdresser. Jennifer at Au Premier has been cutting my hair for a few years now and I certainly would go nowhere else. The whole salon is run like a well oiled machine from the moment you telephone to book an appointment. They always call you 24 hrs before your appointment to remind you and I have never had to wait longer than a week for an open space. When you arrive you are quickly checked in and handed a black gown. Just to make sure, the gowns go over your clothes! not like one man I saw wandering awkwardly around the salon, he had taken off his shirt and pants before he put the gown on. I think he suddenly realized when he saw everyone else! First stop is hair washing and scalp massage if you want one. I used to take the massage but leave it out now and just go straight to the hair wash. The girls obviously don't have any massage experience and just rub your hair for 5 minutes with greasy oil. It's kinda awkward to feel relaxed. Jennifer is a hair goddess and always remembers everything about my hair and the last cut I had. It is still amazing how many other salons have staff who never ever remember anything about you and you always have to re-explain and wonder if they will screw the cut up (again). Coffee and croissants are usually served if you take an early appointment. Prices are pretty reasonable at around 30-35$ for a mans cut and from $45 upwards for a ladies cut. read more

I went in for a head of highlits and left furious. I have been getting regular highlights for about 6 years and this time I had taken a year off so my hair could repair and grow out properly. I went in looking for some summer highlits to lighten my blonde hair. Kim seemed to understand exactly what I wanted so even though this was not my regular stylist I felt confident. Well...after the bleach was rinsed and I went downstairs to dry my hair, I was horrified to find that my hair was breaking and falling out in clumps. The hair I had been growing out and taking such good care of was all of a student destroyed. Even after I showed her what she had done and I received a hair treatment to try to fix it, I left so upset. The hair brush was full of white clumps of dead hair that had just fallen out. I am very upset with this experience and seeing as Kim is supposed to be a colourist and the receptionist said she was always very booked I expected so much more. Instead I got a completely botched bleach job and destroyed hair. I will never go here again. read more

They are very busy and often packed- not to a compromising point but there is a lot always going on! Experience: From the moment you call to book your appointment right through to when you walk out the door everyone is so kind and professional. They're really on top of their customer service! They'll take care to address any of your concerns and book you with a stylist that accommodates your price range and suits your particular needs. They have little dressing rooms for you to take off some winter layers and put on a robe. Then you're whisked off to the "massage" station for a 5 minute head and neck massage with the most amazing oils! After your hair is washed they'll bring you to your station where you can enjoy a cappuccino or tea and get your hair done. I haven't stuck with any one particular stylist but I've always been immensely happy with the results! Even after you're finished, there's still one last perk! This spa offers exiting customers "mini-makeovers" right before they leave, which consists of either a foundation or eye-makeup touch-up by one of their makeup artists. These are small things that ultimately add up to a level of commitment to customer satisfaction that goes a very long way. You walk out feeling ready to take on the world! I've been going to Au Premier for a while now- it might have been quieter and less popular two years ago, but I've had great service every time. I've had one haircut out of about ten that let me down, but that was my fault for being unable to communicate properly what I was looking for. Pinterest isn't always your friend, guys. Otherwise, I've had fabulous results with Cheri for curly haircuts, and mind blowing experiences with Lily for short haircuts. One of the more unpleasant spa experiences I've had. Without over sharing, let me just say their definition of a bikini line wax is the most conservative I have ever encountered. And I've had bikini waxes for more than a decade, in more than 20 salons. This is the first time a spa said they'd charge me more for doing the top of my thigh. Also the woman double-dipped the waxing stick, which is unhygienic and spreads disease. Not what I was expecting from this type of place! read more

I saw Sylvana a couple of times. The first time, I was impressed. She was very personable, took her time, cut as little hair as possible (just enough to give it a good shape) and gave me overall a good haircut. I thought that I had found "the one". When I went back to see her several months later for a shaping , she was overbooked and rushed. I felt quite uncomfortable with other clients clients staring at me., waiting their turn. She seemed to be doing 3 cuts/blowdrys per hour, i.e., 20 minutes each. She must have felt uncomfortable as well. She didn't remember what she had done the first time as she sped through the haircut, cut off large amounts, changed the style completely and left me with a helmut -like 'do that would have required a live-in hairstylist to blowdry, backcomb and hairspray it every day to keep it from looking like a 1950's school marm. I loved this place. I just moved to the city and it was difficult to find a place that combined both quality and good prices. This place definitely had both. Prices for women's haircut can go from 45 - 70$, which I think is fair for the service they provide. First, they take you to a small room where they give you a head massage, followed by shampoo service, all very relaxing. Then the haircut. Vanessa was very friendly and professional. She understood exactly what I wanted and did a fantastic job. I was very happy with it. As if it wasn't perfect already, they also offered me courtesy makeup. I've been going to this salon for years and I've always been very pleased with the experience and final results. Before your actual appointment takes place, they will treat you to a head massage which is completely optional. I find them super relaxing. They'll offer you coffee or tea and work wonders on your hair. If that isn't enough, they offer free makeup touch ups to complete the full experience. The Aveda products line is heavenly and the service is professional. Unfortunately, they have lost a handful of talented stylists over the years and I have noticed though that reception wise, it's changed quite a bit. Jennifer is a good stylist but VERY rough. Tina is rude and does not listen. I felt like I was butchered after I left there. She cut bangs when I did not ask her to!!!! I thought she was just shapping the front and then she just cut it off!!!! My mom had her hair cut with Sylvana and like it the first time but then the second time Sylvana could not remember my mom and what she did and she cut her hair way too short. Great Salon ! Professional , friendly and knowledgeable hairdressers and colourists . I always love my cut and color when leaving Au premier ! price scale is based on the hair dressers seniority but even when I had someone more junior cut my hair it was great ! They also offer coffee tea or other beverages while you wait and you get either a very relaxing scalp massage or get your makeup done for free when you purchase a haircut, so it's always a nice relaxing experience from A-Z. Also worth mentioning when they do my color it lasts a very long time without fading, even when I spend a lot of time in the sun . I decided to try a new hair salon with a hairdresser who specializes in cuts for curly hair. What a mistake I made. Worst haircut ever, no layers - what a horrible haircut. I am so upset and I can't wait to go back to my previous hairdresser - she was amazing. I will never go back to this hair salon. The one positive: the hairdresser was very nice and courteous but, although I was told that she had taken a course on how to cut curly hair, she didn't learn much. A very good friend of mine comes to this place very often. I offered her a gift certificate for a facial, and mani-pedi and she was very happy with the treatments received; therefore, I also booked the same treatments for me. As I could not have them done the same day, I selected one day for the facial, and one day for the mani-pedi. The spa is on top of the hair salon. It is very small, but very clean and with a lot of natural light. The aesthetician was young, and friendly. She looked at my face and decided to do a regular facial and to add a lotion to improve hydration. I explained that I had a couple of blackheads, so I asked if she could do the extractions. She did not use any steam or special equipment. The massage was poorly done, and did not include neither the back of the neck nor the shoulders. I asked her about adding a lotion with sunscreen, as I was going to be outside, but she told me that she did not have any. I checked in the mirror, and I had the blackheads. It was clear that she was trying her best, but she needs more training and supervision. The following week I had the mani-pedi, that was way below expectations. I had to go back the same day, to arrange the nail polish. Employees have a good predisposition but they need more training. read more

I can't even tell you how much business I gave this place... two words: never again. I got my hair cut/coloured there for about 3 years. They did a good job, but the service is really not up to par with the other salons I've recently been to. Firstly, I hate it when people try to hard sell me stuff. They are masters at trying to sell you Aveda products. I'm sorry, but I'm not interested in purchasing a 30$ bottle of shampoo. Secondly, I don't like trekking 30 minutes to a salon only to hear "Oh, your appointment is cancelled, oh your hairdresser moved you to another time..." In other words, "your hairdresser is booking other, more important people in your time slot." I know this for a fact because when I arrived for my 11 am appointment (which she who shall not be named "suddenly couldn't attend,") she was at her station with another client, one whom she seemed to be very friendly with. Lest we forget the time I had a wedding and had to wait 2 hours for a stylist (one which I didn't even book) to start working on my updo--- which was apparently impossible. 3 different stylists tried to do a simple braid before 1 finally got it done. and when i got my makeup done, i told the artist i wanted a nude lip colour... she put dark red. i kindly asked her to change it and she gave me major attitude and said it looked good. I'm just beyond turned off. I'm sure many people have had great experiences, but I've been very unhappy with the neglectful service. Screw up my appointment once, shame on you. SPA- Very professional place. I go for waxing, and their brazilian waxing technique is by far the best I have experienced, and I've been doing it for years. All the girls are trained to do it in a specific way that is very clean and pain-free. I highly recommend paying the price. It may be more than other places but I feel it's totally worth it when they are taking care of "down there". I can't wait to save up and start going for other spa treatments, I will try a facial/peeling next. read more

I had not had my hair cut for two years, due to moving to Canada from the United States and being so unsettled and nervous about finding a new salon and hairdresser in a new country. I have waist length red hair which I maintain myself the best I can. Finally, I couldn't take how dry my ends looked anymore and started googling around for salons in my location. Au Premier was right down the street from me - perfect, I thought. I called on a Wednesday, and asked if they had any openings on Friday afternoon. They did, I was told. The receptionist ran through the pricing for me, and I chose a forty five dollar haircut and style. I mentioned I had not had a haircut in two years, and simply wanted my ends trimmed. When I arrived, the salon was very busy. I waited in line to check in, and mentioned to the woman who helped me that it was my first time at the salon. She showed me the coat rack and walked away. After I hung up my coat, I had to get back in line, since she was no where to be found. When I reached the front of the line, a gentleman helped me. I believe his name was Stefan. He was extremely rude, and frequently walked away from me without telling me to follow him, leaving me standing in the middle of the salon without a clue what to do next, despite me mentioning several times that this was my first visit to a salon in two years. I got the sense that he wasn't listening to a word I said. The pre-shampoo massage was painful - not relaxing at all. So was the shampoo. I worried that the technician was pulling all my hair out by the roots. She used extremely hot water to rinse my hair, despite cool water being better for long hair. After the shampoo, I was led to the stylist's chair, where the real torture began. The masseuse (I believe her name was Natasha) and the stylist (Lisa) both began YANKING at my hair with paddle brushes. Paddle brushes on wet hair! They used absolutely no technique, and were not gentle at all. It felt like a couple of four year olds were brushing my hair. At times I felt my head was being pulled apart by their vicious yanking. I was terrified of what they were doing to my hair - I could hear the tines snapping through the tangles, and knew that more split ends and breaks were being created at every moment. I NEVER brush my wet hair - I always comb it gently, from bottom to top, with a wide toothed comb. I was absolutely astonished at the violence and lack of skill they displayed - I have never before encountered such amateurish incompetence in a hair salon before. I should have walked out of the appointment, but it was cold out, and my hair was wet and uncombed. Finally, I asked them to stop, and asked Lisa to hand me a wide-toothed comb. I proceeded to COMB MY OWN HAIR at an appointment I was paying for, and I did a far better job than either of them at dislodging the tangles. At this point, I was nearly in a panic at what would happen when Lisa began cutting my hair. I told her simply to trim the ends and my bangs - surely she couldn't screw that up too much. Fortunately, she managed not to massacre my hair any further than she already had, though her blow drying/styling process was nearly as painful as the paddle brush torture session had been. Finally it was done, and I paid - and was surprised at the extra ten dollars they added to the bill "for long hair." This is something I was not informed of at any point during the appointment making or styling process. The woman who took my money said that "it was all over the website," and that "I should have known." It is not my responsibility to know - it is their responsibility to tell me! She also mentioned that I should have made my appointment for "further out" since long hair is so difficult to deal with - again, something I had NO WAY of knowing. When I made the appointment, I mentioned I had not been to a salon or had a hair cut in two years - what did the receptionist think my hair looked like? If they had no openings on Friday, they should have told me - I would have gladly come in on any other day! I filled out a comment card detailing how unsatisfied I was, but never received a call or an email apologizing for the poor experience. I can't believe I paid over 70 dollars for that horrible service. I regret every penny I spent. The only thing I can do now is post my detailed review everywhere I can on the web, in hopes that I can dissuade others from being equally duped by the charlatans at Au Premier Monkland. read more

Scheduled an appointment for Wednesday at 1:30. At 11:15 on Wednesday (day of appointment), I get a call stating that the stylist is sick and can I come at 12:00 instead of 1:30. ?? Confused, I ask if it is the same stylist who would be seeing me at noon? Yes, I am told, she can see you at noon. So the stylist who must cancel with me for 1:30 due to illness is well enough to see me an hour and a half earlier? Yes, I am told, she can work during her lunch break to see you at noon. WTF? Obviously, this is b.s. If a stylist is sick enough to go home during the time she's scheduled with me, why would she be well enough to see me an hour and a half earlier? I should have read up about how this place cancels people. Not cool and I am taking my $100 elsewhere (not that they care, apparently). read more

Yesterday I got my hair cut for the first time in a long time and the girl totally understood what I wanted. I was a little nervous about cutting off so much but I am so happy with the results. No one pushed me to purchase any products. I was served in the language of my choice. Although it's a bit expensive, (depending on who you have) I think it's a great overall value for your money. I initially met with a counselor to talk about my hair dye projects. She agreed that the colours would look nice together and gave me an estimate on the price: 60$ for the dye and between 80 and 120 for the ombre. She assured me that the latter only happened on rare occasions and that it should stay around 90$ in my case. I booked an appointment thinking that's what I would be paying, and planned my budget accordingly. When the day of the actual appointment came, I was received rather coldly by most of the employees I talked to. When I met with the colorist, she said that the choice of colour I wanted wouldn't match and refused to do it, keeping in mind that the counselor I met before saw no issue with my pick of colours. I decided on a different dye colour with the ombre. She then said the colouring would be 70$, and the ombre, 120$, despite the fact I was told it's rarely goes that high. I had to drop the colour and only go for the ombre since I was not expecting the prices to be so different from what I was told. After the ombre was done, I was escorted to the basement without any explanation. I had no clue what I was supposed to do next and was just confused and irritated, with an ombre that didn't look good at all. My experience at this salon was unforgettable, but not in a good way. I did not feel welcome there and I was dissatisfied with my hair. read more
