Went with a few of my friends to get a cheap trim. Boy did I get what I paid for!! I asked the hairdresser how much he would recommend I take off. He suggested 2.5 inches and I even gave him the go ahead to take off 3. After the haircut, I was pretty surprised at how short it was. I picked a chunk of hair off the ground and walked up to the owner, asking her how many inches she thought the chunk was... Her response? 6.5... Yikes... When the hair dresser walked over he made some comment along the lines of, "I thought you'd be surprised, but it wasn't even across to start with." (Clients love surprises right?! Nah.) As I was leaving, he said "sorry about your hair." Oh it's ok... It'll only take me a little over a year to grow it back! No biggie. I have had yelp for a while and have never written a review, but after going to this salon I felt it was completely necessary... If you are picky about your hair, spend a few extra dollars and go somewhere that you can trust! :)! read more

I would give it 0 stars if I could. I went to this salon because I thought maybe they'll dye my hair the way I wanted it and because I had thought it was a good salon. I wanted my hair to be red and they dyed it a different color and damaged my hair completely. It's not worth paying $85 for damaged hair and ugly looking hair! I'm very DISAPPOINTED! I'll never go to this salon again. I really hope they close this salon! read more

I love Salon Valerie and the staff. I've been going to this salon a little over a year, for color, cuts, and blowouts. I usually see Sabrina for blowouts, but all of the stylists at this salon are great at their craft. I have used all of the stylists at different times, depending on my schedule. Went here thinking it was still affiliated with Salon de Colores and it wasn't. I was misinformed that it was still Michael's shop. The stylist Yoly had no idea what she was doing. Wouldn't suggest you go to her. Michael should have made it known that ownership had changed hands. I've never been to his shop in Hillsdale but he definitely knows how to do hair. read more

I went for Keratin Treatment for my hair. I have thick hair and did the this treatment few times before in other salons. i am now only one week after the treatment and my hair looks only little bit better than before. i know it's not suppose to be total straight after but it really didn't do much. And i know that i had much better result when i did the keratin before. I think they use cheap material that really does not hold. i have nothing against the place and the girls that work there, but it was just waste of money and time. So my experience here was interesting to say the least. I made an appointment for a blow out since I was going to a wedding, when I arrived at the salon the receptionist had me check in and confirmed my appointment for a "blow dry". Now, I'm not sure if this is why my hair turned out the way it did, but needless to say I was pretty bummed. I've had my hair blown out several times throughout the course of my life. Normally when you go to get a blow out, your hair is washed, blow dried and styled. They did wash my hair and that was fine. When I sat down to have them start to blow dry my hair the hairdresser asked me if I was looking for my hair to be straight. I have pin straight hair to begin with, whenever I go to get it blown out, I usually want it styled a bit, by adding product and trying to give my hair a little oomph, which other stylists have been able to accomplish. I had asked for my hair to be flipped in /curled a little on the ends, but I ended up with pin straight hair. Had I showered, brushed my hair and let it air dry it would have looked pretty much the same. There wasn't even any volume at the top, I was really disappointed. I ended up going home and re-doing my hair. The redeeming part of this experience though, was that I also asked to have waxing services added on. The same girl that blew out my hair also performed the waxing, and much to my surprise it not only looked really good, but it was relatively painless as well. Normally whenever, I go to get my eyebrows waxed I end up tearing up, but that did not happen at all this time. I was a little put off though, by the fact that there was not a private room where the waxing happens, it was done at a sink where the hair is normally washed. This wasn't a huge deal, I was just surprised. The other thing that also bothered me was that when I asked if it would be possible to add on the waxing services, the receptionist said sure and then a hairstylists chimed in and said "well, maybe... but I can't do the waxing someone else needs to". Since the receptionist is the one coordinating, she is the one that should be answering and the answer should be no, if the service really can't be added. If someone else can provide the service in the salon they should be jumping at the chance to make additional revenue off of me. So overall, Salon Valerie gets an extra star because I liked the waxing services, but I had not gotten any, they wouldn't have received more than a 2. read more

I got a life changing keratin treatment at Salon Valerie! I know "life changing" sounds a bit dramatic, but I have very thick, coarse wavy/ moderately curly hair that tends to frizz easily. "Doing" my hair to perfection takes roughly one and a half hours. After having Salon Valerie's keratin treatment, my hair is air drying to near perfection! My hair looks better than ever, super shiny, and feels extra soft. I spent literally no more than 2 minutes styling it for a night out. So yes, life changing. Salon Valerie even carries their own line of shampoos and conditioners to use after you've had the treatment in order to better maintain it. Awesome! Never going back to frizz. I Love love my hair!! Thank you Ximena!!! The first time I met Ximena I came for only a hair cut, which was exactly how I wanted it to be cut. Upon completion of my hair cut she expressed with passion a suggestion to highlight my hair which I don't normally do. Her vision got me very excited to do so. I never at anytime felt any discomfort or doubt about doing the highlights. I'll have to say I'm often very picky and normally get very nervous about going to have my hair cut let alone highlighted by someone I just met. Ximena took the time to consult with me and was very open and honest about what she thought would suit me best. Not only is she very talensted she is very kind and sweet. Ximena is an amazing hair stylist! I am very picky when it comes to choosing hair salons and hair stylists.. After making a ton of search, i decided to get my ombre highlights at this hair salon. All the good reviews they had were true. It was a clean and friendly environment. Ximena did an amazing job! She is super nice and friendly as well. I am so happy with my ombre highlights. I cannot wait to be back for a haircut that i already booked for next month. You should also try their own brand sulfate free hair products. I don't like giving bad reviews, but I must say this is by far the worse salon I have ever been to. I went for a simple blowout and I walked out looking worse than when I walked in. Truth be told I could have done a better blowout myself. What's more upsetting is that even after telling the hairdresser I was not happy it did not change. More importantly no one intervine and try to amend the situation. I am beyond upset with the customer service and professionalism of this establishment. If you have curly hair do not go there they do not know how to cut curly hair or even blow dry hair. Go back to school. Why have a salon if you cannot cut all types of hair. Do not go there. Worse salon I have ever walked into. read more

I love Ximena, the owner of Salon Valerie..she is so talented! I had long curly drab hair for years, and needed a new look. She suggested Ombre, and after it was complete I had beautiful honey tipped hair that was styled and cut so well I couldn't go a day without getting compliments on my hair. I used to go to Devacurl salon in Manhattan, and Ximena blows them out of the water. I even bring my 5 year old curly haired daughter here because its SO hard to find someone who really knows how to cut curly hair. I cant wait til my next appt. in April!! I would give a zero rating if I could. I talked to the owner on the phone before I came and told her exactly what I wanted. I explained I had 2 inch of roots with light blonde hair and wanted a peach color. I specifically asked if that would cover it up and be ONE color. She said yes so I made the appointment. I came in, she did two different color tests on my hair, said it was temporary and would wash out. The bright pink strand is still in my hair after she tried washing it out three times. My roots are showing and I have discoloration, it actually looks as if I dyed it myself. She wanted to curl my hair for pictures and I agreed but I went to use the bathroom, came back and she was talking in Spanish to another customer while I was sitting in the chair for 10 minutes. After her conversation she walked over and said, "are you waiting for something? because I can't do anything else to your hair." Wow I can't believe how rude the owner was. I would not recommend going here at all, horrible customer service. read more

Before I start my rant I will say that my hair turned out OK. I'm new to the area. I am trying to find a new salon, my hair is long and I haven't had it colored in a long time. I was excited to try a new place and finally get a "full experience" salon day (cut color and blow dry). It had been almost 3 years since I had been to a new salon. I walked in, barely got greeted, was told to go sit in the back of the salon by the sinks. I sat down, a few ladies came over and barely said 2 words to me. I went to beauty school in the past, so I had an idea of what I needed, but it would have been nice to have a consult. This is what new clients normally receive. Nothing. They rambled a little bit about what I needed, mixed the color, and applied it. All while having their own conversations. I literally felt like I was bothering them by coming in. Fast forward, I'm getting shampooed, over to the chair for a haircut. Now it's blow dry time and another 2 words come out - straight curved in or out? I tried to explain what I wanted-nothing. Blew out my hair (again it's OK) but didn't listen to what I wanted. After she finishes I get up, she says bye. At THIS POINT is when I have to ask "what is your name!?". Until then I had no idea. How do you expect to have a following without giving your name and maybe hours of availability!? Do I like the style? Color? Nothing. It was the most bizarre experience I have ever had. Even at checkout they say nothing- not how was your experience maybe do you want to make another appointment "we suggest 4-8 weeks" here's a business card? Here's the products we used?. NOTHING. I checked out and left. Again, my hair is OK, but Needless to say I WILL NOT be returning. read more
