I also got the Groupon for this salon because I just moved here and need a new stylist...why not get a great deal on the first cut while I'm looking for a permanent stylist? Groupons are tough for small businesses because of the high volume they bring in. The major problem in this case is that Salon 17 is not managed or run as a business at all. It's a handful of independent stylists who use the facilities. Only one of the many stylists who work there ran the Groupon, but completely failed to make this clear in the ad. And apparently she didn't tell her co-workers about the marketing scheme, or they were too daft to understand how this could negatively affect their brand as a whole. When I called the number found on Yelp after I got no response from the number I called on the Groupon, Michael answered and scheduled me an appt (for the next day on which he had many openings). I got a call later that afternoon from a girl saying Michael wouldn't help Groupon customers, but that she couldn't book me until after Christmas. She told me to call two other numbers to see if they had appts. I told her she could figure it out for me and let me know...it is not my responsibility to play phone tag with every stylist there to see who has openings when...especially when I already had an appt with Michael. Needless to say, there were no appts available until after Christmas for Groupon customers. When I asked Michael why he couldn't help, he explained that the Groupon was only run by stylists who didn't have full clientele and needed to use the marketing scheme. Interesting considering I made an appt for the next morning no problem. He also claimed to be the owner, which seems might not be true? I can't tell bc there is so much bickering and lack of support within the group of stylists there that I have no idea who owns what. While I never actually had my hair cut by these people, I feel that I can write this review as a warning to potential customers about their inability to work within a group-share business model. I decided to go elsewhere to get my hair cut because I couldn't make an appointment for over a month and because the people I dealt with there were terrible with customer service. It is a poorly run business...the stylists might be great at cutting hair, but running the shop is not a forte. I DO NOT RECOMMEND GIVING YOUR BUSINESS TO ANYONE WHO IS TOO GOOD FOR IT. How will they deal with problems that arise? How do I know I'm getting equal service if only certain stylists will accept Groupon purchasers? I just moved here and want a permanent stylist. I have thinning hair. I fought several stylists around city park area. Kept getting bad cuts until I found Sarah Jay. She was able to match the thin top with the thick sides by changing length of each and thinning shears. Finally a hair cut I can show myself in public with. She does what you ask. Is always polite and professional. So good I tracked her down to this place from other places. I have been getting her cuts for several years now without complaint. She used to do shaves also. Not sure if she is setup here to do that but worth asking for. The decor is very a nice upscale place that does not feel girly or macho but a nice in the middle comfortable place. This place is great. I kept hearing great things about this place and the stylist Kate Shapland. I have been looking for someone to cut my hair that I like for years now. Kate nailed it. She gave me a great cut that I like and really took charge. I pretty much let her do whatever she wanted. I will be seeing her again for sure. My wife is now going to her for color too. I could rant and rave about Andrea Cross at Salon 17 all day. After moving to Denver 2 years ago, I didn't know who to go to for my hairstyling needs. I saw a girl with an amazing short haircut at a concert and asked her who did her hair, which led me to Andrea. I have been seeing her ever since and am never disappointed. I rock the best cut I've ever had- it's a short asymmetrical style, not one that many stylists could pull off so well. I also get my color done by Andrea. She is phenomenal and always has good suggestions on what to do. I like to go very blonde and not once has my hair felt damaged. The salon is also in a great, quaint location and has a really comfortable, relaxed vibe. Overall, I highly recommend the salon and Andrea if you are looking for something really unique for a reasonable price! read more

I can't believe I forgot to change my reviews.. But I will most definitely not EVER come and see Sarah Jay ever ever ever again. I followed her from 3 different salons for years so it's not like I wasn't a loyal client. I hadn't dyed my hair In months and was in dire need of some highlights with deep blues and a haircut. I came to my appointment and Sarah seemed like she was okay. She didn't brush my hair before she put the bleach on, and then went to the bathroom for a really long time.. Then came stumbling out and couldn't even walk straight. I should've made her rinse me and left, but because she used to be my friend I thought maybe she was fine, so she rinsed me and told me to brush my hair after. As I was brushing my hair flippn came off in APPLESAUCE LIKE CHUNKS. FELLL the F off ok. She accused me of not taking care of my hair, which is a downright lie because I spend a lot of money on products and vitamins to keep my hair healthy! Then put the color on and I waited forever again. After she rinsed me, I asked her for LONG layers and barely a trim, because I'm growing out my hair.. And my LONGEST layer on the top after she butchered my haircut was 4 inches long, if that. & my hair goes down to the middle of my back. Then she had to style my hair, so she started drying it and SINGED my ear with the blow dryer on hot, I had to say Sarah 5 times till she noticed she was burning the crap out of me. My ear was red all next day and hurt. AND TO TOP IT OFF. SHE COULDNT EVEN STAND UP TO DRY AND CUT MY HAIR!!! She sat while sliding off of this stool behind me. You know what my favorite part of all time of getting a haircut, how soft and amazing your hair feels after. Well not mine. Not this time. It felt like horse hair. Coarse and rough and freaking singed. This appointment was so important to me too because I had a HUGE photoshoot the next morning at 7 am. As soon as I got to my car I started crying. I have never been so abused at a hair salon in my life. So I texted Sarah when I got home and told her I wasn't happy, and was crying and so disappointed with the work she did, and what did she do?! Cuss me out and then tells me that I needed to apologize to her. Then repetitively blew up my phone for the next 6 hours. I don't know if she was drunk or on something but she was definitely NOT SOBER. I have never dealt with this kind of unprofessionalism in my life. Jackie the owner met with me and gave me some oil product to use at night.. And my money back .. But for a messed up hair job that just isn't enough for me. It's my hair. It's not like clothes you can return or something you can fix easy, especially after it was melted off... I got a terrible haircut from Kate and will never be returning. I asked for a bob with straight across bangs. What I got was a mullet-esk bowl cut with jagged bangs. What a waste of $50.00! I had to go to another salon to get it fixed. read more

I recently moved to Denver from New York City, and finding a good person to cut my curly, fine (read: difficult) hair was a challenge. How lucky am I that I found Salon 17 and Michael? Very! He knew exactly what I needed, and even suggested a slight change in the back that made my hair more hip than even what I got used to getting in NYC. Very happy with the salon atmosphere also - a very cute "house" on the cool, Uptown area of 17th Avenue. Full service hair salon downstairs, with massage, waxing, and other services upstairs make it a place you can go and pamper yourself and come out looking wonderful. read more

I was still a little apprehensive because I did not get a call to remind me of my appointment (i consider this pretty much an industry standard), but I actually ended up liking Molly and being really happy with how my hair turned out. Ever since my hair and I met Sarah J, we have been in an exclusive relationship and have not strayed that course. The salon is adorable, in a convenient location, with a good amount of parking available. The prices are fair, the environment warm and hospitable, and, most importantly, the quality of hair styling exceptional. Since Jackie Mollendor has left Firehaus and moved to this salon, I am re-posting my review of her as a colorist: I have fine, long, light colored hair and went to see Jackie Mollendor to refresh my blonde highlights. I had recently moved to Denver and was impressed by her bio on the Firehaus website. Despite telling her I wanted the highlights to look really natural, I left with very distinct dark red and bleached blonde streaks in my hair. I decided to let her correct it because she was nice, had good credentials according to Firehaus' website, and I didn't have the extra cash to go to someone new. Big mistake. She put in a bunch of random bleached blonde steaks to cover the red and overlapped the color again, so my hair came out really damaged. It looked awful and I was embarrassed even putting my hair up in a ponytail because the streaks were so bad. I lived with it for 8 weeks and then finally was able to go back to my stylist in SF. My old stylist was literally calling over assistants to have them look at how bad Jackie's highlights were. Jackie was a nice person and the haircut was alright, but I feel like I can only give 1 star because the color job was so awful that I felt like I was misled by Jackie's bio saying she was named a top 10 colorist in the country. read more

I'm not picky, I just know when it looks right and feels right. Her personality - awesome! She makes you feel really comfortable and welcome. Jackie is extremely knowledgeable, always keeping up with the latest trends, products, and techniques. Hair color - awesome! Color is always exactly the way I want it! I'm a very dark chocolate brunette and the color and highlights always turns our gorgeous! And the best thing - my hair continues to look healthy and shiny. Haircut - awesome! The most important thing for me is how you hair looks after I wash and style it myself for the first time. After my hair cut/hair color I just simply blow dry it - no styling needed - and it does look really good! I'm not a type of person who likes to spend more than 15 min styling hair at home.
