I usually don't comment with competitor options, but, if you want the best Boudin in the state of Louisiana, it's not too far from this place T-Rey's is so much better. As a child growing up in New Orleans I remember by grandfather from New Iberia coming to visit frequently. I have a lot of fond memories from his visits, but one of the things I remember is applicable to this review. Whenever he would arrive he would have several gifts for the family. I'm not talking about traditional gifts either. He would bring several packs of boudin and hogs head cheese from a local New Iberia shop. That must have had a lasting effect, because since then, I am on a never ending quest for good boudin and head cheese. I was on such a quest just the other day when I noticed Boudreaux's. The moment I walked in, I knew I was in the right place. There were coolers filled with stuffed chickens, roasts, pork loins, gumbo, étouffée and all other sorts of Cajun delights. In the fresh counter is where I focused my attention and will elaborate on a few items. Boudin - fresh, homemade and with the perfect combination of meat and rice. It had a slight kick, but not to overwhelming. Stuffed chicken thighs - stuffed with jalapeño cream cheese and wrapped in bacon. $375 for around 30 minutes covered and 20 uncovered. Oh my goodness gracious was this delicious. Even if you don't normally like thighs, I strongly recommend this item. Smoked boudin - I don't remember smoked boudin when I was growing up, but what a great idea. Boudreaux's version was perfect. Smoked sausage with pepper jack cheese - whatever you do, but some of this sausage. The sausage is made and smoked in house and this is, without a doubt, the best smoked sausage I've ever had. I don't know how it hod hold up in gumbo or some other dish, but it is amazing on its own. The people working behind the counter were friendly and very helpful. If you're like me and miss the Cajun butcher shops of Acadiana, I recommend you take a trip to Boudreaux's.

Très Bon's menu includes pulled pork, brisket, grit bowls, cracklins, and ribs- and that's just scratching the surface. Their sandwiches include smoked brisket with pimento cheese, BBQ pork and slaw, and pulled pork with garlic mayo. If that's not enough for you, Très Bon offers deep fried Oreos and a Maple Bacon Sundae and they have a fridge full of sausage and other goodies packed up just waiting for you to take home- talk about "very good"! I had the pulled pork platter with corn grits and andouille mac ($13). This platter was delicious. First of all, the portions were huge! The pulled pork was actual pulled pork and not a pile of pork shavings covered in barbecue sauce that you tend to get at some other spots. It was juicy and smoky perfection on a plate. I never think of corn grits as a barbecue side, but Très Bon is here to change all of that- creamy and rich, they were perfect with the pork. The andouille mac was in a league of its own- VERY cheesy and the andouille was a nice touch, but totally not necessary as the mac spoke for itself. I loved the huge portions and cool atmosphere. Look around and you'll see old matchbooks on display, an extensive hot sauce collection and even vintage pinball machines. Really though, it's all about the delicious food at a great price. This place is exactly what we were looking for! It's truly a deli/restaurant with all of the cool Louisiana of the by gone era stuff. It was like walking back into my childhood by the stuff in there. You go to the counter and order you food while the young servers bring you your meal. The food was delicious! I had the brisket sandwich with a garlic Mayo that was delightful. My wife had all the meats and it was perfect! The stuffed boudin balls are exactly how I would want them. Go give it a try!

While I'm not crazy about Bourgeois Meat Market's andouille sausage, which I have found to be a bit…read moretough, I enjoy their regular smoked sausage, and I'm a huge fan of their Cajun Smoked Tasso. For the uninitiated: Tasso is fast-cured, seasoned, and smoked pork shoulder. It's used in stews and simmered foods, softening as it cooks, adding a delicious, unique flavor and bite that's typical of many Southern Louisiana (read: Cajun) dishes. Tasso's difficult to describe, but you'll know it when you taste it. I just received four 1-lb. packages of tasso, shipped from Bourgeois' smokehouse in Gray, LA via FedEx 2Day. The order arrived in good shape, and though the ice packs surrounding the meats had melted, the tasso was smoked (and so, fully-cooked) and it was vacuum-sealed. It went straight into my freezer, and it'll be fine. The cost to ship from Lafourche Parish to San Diego doubled the price of the product, from $7.24/lb to around $15, but I pay that much (or more) for quality steaks and seafood, here at home, and it was my choice to spend top-dollar for meat that I know, from experience, will make my gumbo, red beans, etc. taste better than I could otherwise make them. Kudos to the folks at Bourgeois Meat Market for offering a high-quality product, and for handling the purchase and shipping in a professional manner. I like visiting their shop when I'm in the area, but I LOVE that they don't make me get on a plane to eat what they're cookin'!

I cook a lot of both at home--I'm someone who is dedicated enough to my Louisiana cooking to order Steen's syrup from Louisiana to my Florida doorstep even though Florida makes perfectly good cane syrup in its own right. (Side note: any New Orleans restaurant you venture to serving pain perdu with maple syrup and not Steen's--ask what the hell they're even doing.) Like most worthwhile restaurants, the menu here changes up. The specials as well as their famous sandwiches seem the way to go and I got the fried shrimp with bread and butter pickles. Exceptional--a small amount, it may have even been a starter but regardless was perfect for me. The sandwiches other diners had on their plates were large and looked delicious just glancing around at other tables. Everything comes up fast and the atmosphere is . . . just ideally New Orleans. It feels all the way "working CBD lunch" yet unhurried, a reflection of Cochon's greatness but scaled down and with utterly no pretense. There's simply a real sense of both care and expertise in everything done here no matter how simple or complex. Beyond all else, they're doing what they love here with no scaling back or dressing up to make it anything else. A winner through and through.
