Haute Foods - A couple salads included with my weekly delivery!

    Haute Foods

A good concept but in our experience it was executed with a number of flaws in both the delivery, I…read morehad to chase it twice, and food when it arrived. See my photos that I detailed with captions. As example, key ingredients as described in the order photo and write up were missing with no substitution. I appreciate what this young woman, cook and health advocate is trying to accomplish in healthy meals, home delivered, with option of ad-hoc or subscription ordering. But it fell enough short for our one try that we didn't order again. Also, I'll note that she calls herself "chef" but has no formal training. But she came to be passionate about the role of good food in health due to a personal health crisis and it is a good thing to want to carry forward the learning she had to help others. Last, I think she has recently taken over a once failing restaurant space in the North End of Boise and renamed and recrafted it into a restaurant of her own. It carries a different name than Haute Foods.

I was soooo excited to try out Haute for the macro meal delivery service. The pros are that it was…read morevery easy to order and the team did a great job accommodating my dietary needs. I choose the chef's choice option and for almost everything, flavors were great. One of the meats was over salted but not inedible. The sauces were all very delicious. The cons: only received 13/15 meals ordered. Since each meal is upwards of $15, this was a significant shortage. Three of the meals had undercooked beef (not rare steak, but tough bulgogi cuts), so that was only 10 out of 15 edible meals delivered. The turmeric cauliflower had a sandy texture I couldn't stomach. I was told by the team that I should have reheated it for 20 minutes in a cast iron skillet, rather than microwave. The meals were not labeled and there were no instructions on reheating, so that was just confusing all around. If you order the chefs choice, you have to request your itemized receipt to see the macros and the macros for the protein will be missing, so you'll just be on your own in terms of calculating macros and calories for your meal. Fine, but not the product they're selling. The team has been somewhat responsive as I've brought these issues up, but I'm still waiting to hear if/how I will be compensated for the 5 missing/undercooked meals. And it doesn't help the issue that now I have to go to the grocery store, cook, etc when I had thought I had that all taken care of for me by paying a premium to Haute. I asked for a credit for the following week as the food was decent and the service (if it actually is executed as billed) is a great, convenient concept. UPDATE: the team offered additional meals to compensate for the missing/undercooked food. I was fine with it as I really wanted to continue the service, but a credit would have been a much better solution.

Kanak Attack - Katsu Chicken is delicious.

Kanak Express food truck, Sunday July 13th lunchtime at Green Acres Boise…read moreBeen awhile since I had visited Kanak Attack, the food truck started up in 2009 and the business model now includes a mobile group that supports fire fighter activities, as well as a permanent catering division at Lake Harbor with a restaurant. As with any food truck, some of the hardest part of finding them is knowing where to look. I've had the best luck by following Kanak on Instagram, but you can also look up Green Acres by Shoreline Drive on Pioneer street (new location) to see the multiple trucks scheduled that week. Another source I use a lot is the Treasure Valley Food Truck Finder (formerly Boise Food Trucks) on Facebook. Like most food trucks that feature proteins, the prices have jumped up in the last two-three years. A salad with protein is the best bet for bargain hunters at $10, or the three tacos (see menu photo) but I have found that getting the twenty dollar "Two Entree Plate Lunch" works out pretty good as it's usually enough for one meal immediately and another reheated in the microwave (rice) and air fryer (meat). The plate lunch includes a) choose a rice, b) choose a salad and c) choose a protein. My favorites are the Kalua Pig, which is smoky, shredded pork that is juicy, not overly fatty, but maybe to salty for some. I saved most of this and made enchiladas the next day at home. Teriyaki chicken is the same price, add a $1 for the Katsu Chicken which was juicy and crispy with the breaded fried exterior and includes a dipping sauce that's a little sweet and addictive, it's so good. Used to plain macaroni salad? Hawaiian style is a little different, but delicious and is usually the first side I finish. If you are a first timer, don't be afraid to ask for help figuring out what to order, the crew usually takes the time to answer questions and guide you. The menu is pretty well organized into sections.

I had two other tacos that were Brisket. Delicious, fresh, absolutely good. My wife had a bowl of chicken and slaw. That was so fresh and delicious as well. The staff is so nice. Worth eating here if you are at the Green Acres Food truck park.
