We were passing through on on Route 54 and looking for lunch and what a treasure we found. The food, chicken salad, broccoli salad, potato salad, fresh homegrown tomatoes and jalapeño lemonade were absolutely delicious! Best of all was our host Tammy Kay. She is an incredible person along with her husband Lonnie and business partner Andy. We were treated with incredible kindness and hospitality. What went well? Everything. We felt like we had walked into a relatve or friends home for lunch. Today... street shrimp tacos, street corn and Spanish rice. Oh my. So delicious. Don't pass up the jalapeño strawberry lemonade. All homemade. The pies looked great; but will have to wait on a return trip for that. There is even a freezer case that has entrees you might can bring home. Next time you are in that "neck of the woods " be sure to stop. You won't regret. What a great stop. The Salty Hen Feed Co was like walking in to a hallmark video. Community members decorating Kentucky Derby hats and discussing upcoming community events. We were welcomed immediately. My husband had the house chicken salad with bacon ranch sandwich. I had a special order BLT. These came with chips and a broccoli salad. They have an assortment of freshly made beverages: teas, some kind of a strawberry, jalapeño, lemonade and another fresh tropical concoction. As interesting as those sounded, I opted for the brunch mimosa. The sandwiches were delicious, the bread was fantastic. The broccoli was a mix of things I would never have thought should be combined. OMG, so good. My husband said it was probably the first time he's ever enjoyed eating broccoli. We got extra to go! We chit chatted with the owners about the history of the community and XIT. Very pleasant couple. This stop did a bit in restoring my faith in humanity. read more

What a great alternative to the deep-fried fast food that's everywhere on the highways! Our hostess could not have been kinder or friendlier. We wandered in toward the end of their stated hours, but she made sure we were fed well and not rushed. The chicken salad and pimento-cheese mini-croissants were the perfect lunch, light but filling. The food was delicious! It is a salad bar style set up and everything was fresh. I love the bacon ranch chicken salad, but my sister liked the traditional "fluffy butt" salad. They also had a delicious hot pasta special that my husband got with grilled chicken and garlic bread. If that's not enough she gladly made grilled cheese for our two boys who weren't interested in salads! We picked up a beautiful apple pie to take to our destination as well! The store is cute and has few other souvenirs. We enjoyed our conversation with the owners and would definitely recommend a stop in! Stopped on the way through and had a great grilled cheese and some of the best pimento cheese. Would have loved to stay and have brunch, as the owner says they have brunch every Saturday morning (mimosas, French toast, etc.).
