I don't think I can properly express how much I've enjoyed Salute the Sun! I got my start with yoga online during the pandemic and didn't have much experience with yoga classes when I first started coming here. I found that coming to the studio deepened and strengthened my practice in a way I'd been yearning for. While I love my home practice, coming to the studio, setting up my mat alongside other folks, and practicing together is something incredible. I tried out most of the other spots in Charlottesville for yoga and found salute the sun was the best fit for me - it's close to the university, has a variety of different people and skill levels in class, and most of all, every teacher I've met has been incredible. There are a number of different styles of teachers, but the one thing that brings them all together is their kindness and warmth. The variety of classes is also great - I've been challenged and dripped sweat during a Power Vinyasa, and cleared my mind and settled into a Yin yoga class. The studio itself is cozy, bright, and a nice temperature without being too hot, plus there are infrared lamps that you can lay your mat under if you want a little extra heat. All the teachers are wonderful, but I especially love Lavon and Malena's classes. Shannon, the owner, is super and very on top of it, and also teaches some classes that are just so creative and fun. Shannon is the reason I got into yoga -- I am obsessed with her power vinyasa classes! I've tried various kinds of yoga at various studios here and there over the years, but never felt a real desire to be consistent...One class with Shannon, however, and I was hooked! I need my workouts to be meditative but also challenging -- I am a grad student who sits a lot and I need my workouts to work out all the kinks, aches, pains, and really help me get back into my body and feel deliciously tired afterward. Shannon's flows do exactly that and more! When she opened her own studio I was *thrilled*, and even more thrilled to learn that the other teachers working with her are just as incredible at helping you move, dig deep within yourself, and become more flexible while also improving strength. I've found that I really enjoy everyone I've had a class with so far! The community is incredibly friendly and warm, and the teachers are always very attentive in helping my fix my form / offering substitutions when I wasn't quite ready for certain poses yet (making this an excellent environment for beginners as well as yoga experts). I adore STSY and can not stop telling everyone about it! Yoga went from a sort of "meh, I need to stretch" to a workout I seriously look forward to and feel so, so good after. Let me tell you one thing about Salute the Sun Yoga: you won't want to take another class anywhere else once you've gone. Shannon Burns is the best yogi in town, hard stop. Her teaching style is approachable, real, laugh-at-yourself, challenging yet still spiritual and mindful. You leave a class elevated and ready for anything out in the world. As for the rest of the "Shine Squad": There is a teacher for every type of student or practice. I've been taking classes there for two years since it opened and really enjoy Mary Ann, Lavon, Jess, Anya, and Rachael who are all informative, great at cueing, and always offer something for you to think about mentally or spiritually. All ages and abilities are welcome; it's not one of those snobby studios that caters to the owners' clique-ish crowd. My favorite thing about STSY is the outdoor classes when weather permits! I recently moved away from Charlottesville, and what I miss the most is Salute The Sun Yoga. It is the BEST yoga studio I have ever been to, and I haven't found an equivalent studio in Boston. Shannon, the owner, brings encouraging and vibrant energy into every class. She will test your strength, flexibility and endurance, and you will walk out of class feeling like the best version of yourself. She is the very essence of positive energy. All of the other teachers that I took with at the studio were amazing too - challenging in all the right ways! I have had a great experience at Salute the Sun. Their classes are welcoming, spiritually uplifting, and I always feel like the way I show up is ok, even if I am having an off day. Yoga can be expensive, so the month long unlimited pass at STS is a fantastic way to try different, diverse teachers or classes types to figure out what works best for you. The first class there is also free, which feels like a tiny gift-- that welcoming practice promotes wellbeing in ways that benefit the Cville community overall. Finally found the energy I was longing for! I have had the pleasure of taking classes from different instructors at Salute the Sun Yoga and ALL have genuinely positive energy and no matter what your mood there is a class for it! Shannon has created a special environment that matches her enthusiasm and creativity that is unmatched by any yoga studio in Charlottesville. My first class was the Power Vinyasa with Shannon! Just walking in the doors, she immediately makes you feel welcomed in the studio space which is beautifully tranquil. The ceiling has special heating grids that were on for this class and they made me appreciate my absorbent yoga mat because I quickly broke a sweat. Shannon has impeccable presence as an instructor and helped me shake off the dust after not practicing for a while. I have LOVED taking classes at Salute the Sun! I have to admit I'm more of a high impact / weights junkie, but classes at Salute the Sun have been the perfect compliment to my strength training. The instructors have all been amazing and the classes have all been 45-60 minutes long- perfect timing for me! The music is always spot, the cues are intentional and the flow well thought out.
