Sam Kendall's is a delicious gem! We are staying in town one night only for business and we struck gold! We placed an order to go since we had a long day and didn't want to go out. We each ordered the tomato crab bisque soup. DELICIOUS! We each ordered the pear garden salad with jumbo grilled shrimp - also AMAZING. The Romain and spinach greens were so fresh, crisp, and green. I visited Sam Kendall's while on a work trip. Sarah was our server and she was attentive and funny and never let a drink run dry. Most of us had the daily special, a steak with shrimp and a garlic sauce. The sauce was the real winner, I could have eaten it on everything. Service was great, food was great. So I can only speak to one meal. Got into town late (9:35p, closes at 10p). Hartsville isn't the most thriving late night scene so late dinner options were limited and I won't eat Taco Bell. Kitchen kindle accommodated my late order (after they told bartender they were 'closed'). I ordered the filet, add I do when I travel. This filet was the most perfectly cooked med rare filet I've had in awhile....esp after kitchen was closing. Great meal and very appreciative. We ate here for the first time on a Thursday evening for supper. We were impressed by the clean, open appearance of the restaurant and the clean cut, handsome waiters. The waitresses were very pretty as well except personally I would have preferred seeing them in black and white attire instead of the extremely tight khaki pants. Hubby had the pork chop entree with salad and mashed potatoes. We were also brought delicious bread and olive oil mixed with balsamic vinegar and, what seemed to be , rosemary. The bread was warm and soft with a slight crust around the edges- delicious. I had hoped for some French onion soup but, unfortunately, it was not on the menu for this night- only lobster bisque and clam chowder. So I opted for a garden salad and a baked potato . I asked for grilled onions to go with the potato and the waiter very graciously said that he could get that for me. I also got butter and sour cream for my potato. I do know that these have to be requested "on the side" or they will be made together for you. The salad was the best I have ever eaten. I don't usually care much for tomatoes but these were delicious - with a fresh, but slightly sweet, taste . The salad was only lettuce, tomatoes, a spelling of shredded cheddar cheese, and some bacon crumbles. But it was scrumptious. The baked potato was nothing out of the ordinary but it was quite tasty as well. I usually like to eat the skin along with my potato but it was too tough to cut so I ended up with just potato . Hubby loved the mashed potatoes- he ate every bite! He had 2 of the thickest grilled pork chops I have ever seen with mushroom gravy. He said they were good although they could have been more tender. He ate almost all of one but was unable to eat the other . The restaurant was nice and quiet when we arrived but had begun to be a little boisterous around the bar area by the time we left. Not rowdy at all but the alcohol had begun to take effect for those who were imbibing. The restaurant is very nice but very pricey for our budget. We spent almost $40 for one entree. A salad and baked potato and 2 iced teas. That plus a tip for the ultra nice young waiter. The tea was delicious as well. Hubby had to get 2 refills.. And we did not once have to summon the waiter. He checked on us without fail and without being overly attentive. There was music but at a quiet volume that allowed for normal conversation and it was appropriate for dining. No crude, vulgar lyrics or profanity, no excessive drumming or electric guitars. We would certainly love to return but due to the cost it will probably only be once or twice a year. I have heard many good things about this place. We decided to stop by for dinner last night while we were in town. It is a nice place. The staff is super. Probably some of the best wait staff I have every seen. We both ordered ribeyes with garlic potatoes and a house salad. It was all good. Not the best steak I ever had and it was a bit pricey. To begin, allow me to disclose that the meal I did receive from this establishment was free. However, that would make no difference to my rating, as this place was simply phenomenal. I came into this restaurant after hearing and reading that this establishment was the best place to dine in Hartsville, and I felt like having a fancy dinner for a birthday. Upon entering, the staff was especially kind to me and seated me at a nice booth, underneath moody lighting. I was then provided bread, a lovely, crusty loaf of ciabatta (that unfortunately was not housemade, as disclosed by my waiter) that was the prelude for what's to come. After a decent moment of deliberation, I ended up ordering the New York Strip cooked to medium, with garlic mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly, and was tender, flavorful, and quite juicy.... I may, in fact, call it one of the best steaks I've ever had. The potatoes, as well, were delightful, buttery and perfectly seasoned. All the while, my waiter, Jose, was nothing but kind and courteous to me. My meal concluded with desert, which unfortunately was not the creme brulee I requested at first. However, upon Jose's recommendation, I had the seasonal desert, a Reese's pie. The pie was lovely and sweet, with the saltiness of the main peanut butter mousse complemented perfectly by the sweetness of the graham cracker crust, the whipped cream, chocolate sauce, chunks of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, and chocolate base. To conclude, needless to say, I give this place an immensely high recommendation. I believe, personally, that this establishment is the best place to eat if you're in Hartsville or simply passing through on the way to Myrtle Beach. I will be back in the future, and I fully intend to come hungry for another immaculate meal. read more

Our first experience with Sam Kendall was not good, but we have went back quite a few times like we said we wouldn't and it has definitely improved a bunch. Certain cuts of steak still aren't the best, but it's ok. I'm not a big steak eater, so everything I've ordered since our first not so great visit has been delicious. read more

Went with the Kingston marinated sirloin. Expected much more for a $21.95 sirloin. Tough for a USDA choice steak that i ordered medium rare and it came out medium. While in town on business (I'm from Wisconsin), I've been to Sam Kendall's in Hartsville, SC 3 times in the past 3 weeks. The first time I had the Ribeye. It was quite good! Perfect medium rare. The second time I had the special cut Sirloin. This steak was also quite good and a perfect medium rare. Now... third time there I had the Prime Rib. Prime Rib is one of my favorite cuts, and when it's done properly, it cuts like soft butter and melts in your mouth. When it got to my table, it looked absolutely wonderful! The problem started when I went to cut the first piece to have a taste. I have never, in my 60 yrs of life, had to actually work to cut a Prime Rib! This thing looked the part, but that was all it had going for it. Granted, it had good flavor, but a Prime Rib should be a pleasure to eat and not a chore. Come and visit ANY Supper Club in Wisconsin on a Thursday or Saturday and learn what Prime Rib SHOULD be. I will go back again when I'm in the area, but I will skip the Prime Rib read more

My husband and keep trying. And trying. And trying. But I've finally just hit a wall with this restaurant, and I think we are truly done getting so completely disappointed and I doubt we will be back. We have tried frequently and taken our out-of-town guests, but the disappointment remains. And how sad this is. The venue itself is perfect, large enough and well appointed. But you can't cover for an uninterested cooking staff. The food is absolutely terrible. Yesterday I ordered ribs and how difficult is that? It came and the small, sad little rack was so hot and dry it was obviously well cooked long ago then microwaved to get that hot. There was absolutely no barbeque Sause, I actually had to ask for some. They brought a sad little cup. The sides were coleslaw and fries that were just barely passable, but the entire plate wouldn't fill a "Happy Meal" container. Let's top this off with a sincerely upset digestive issue later in the day. The wait staff was wonderful but the bartender his usual grumpy, surly self. I wonder if he hates his job of making sure the martinis only have one jigger of gin and the rest olive juice. The cost was epic. We are done and what a shame. read more

Though my husband's steak was excellent, the "jumbo" scallops were awful. I wish I'd taken a picture because there were only 5 and the largest one was about the size of a quarter - not jumbo, by any means. The scallops were overcooked. The "side" of seasonal veggies were 8(yes, I counted) 1/2 slices of squash and 2 slivers of onion, which, by the way, were tasty, albeit scant. My mom, who ordered the seafood pasta, gave me part of her's, and that part had 3 scallops in it! My husband made the comment that Sam Kendall's was a "steakhouse" and what did o expect? This dinner was not up to the standards we've come to expect from Kendall's. We ate at the bar and the bartender was courteous and attentive. I ordered the filet, medium rare with garlic mashed potatoes and coleslaw. I got a filet that was medium well with a baked potato. They took back the steak and brought the garlic potatoes. By the time the steak arrived, medium rare, the potatoes were getting cold. My wife had the swordfish "steak". It was tasty but looked to be about a 1/4 in. thick. It was the skinniest "steak" I can ever remember having and definitely not what we expected. I guess shame on us for not asking. Overall a disappointing time. Sam Kendall's is among the nicer restaurants in town and will provide a reliable experience. It's clean, has a nice interior with exposed brick, friendly staff, and a nice bar. The food selection and quality is fine, but I mostly come to this place for drinks. Unfortunately, I usually have to remind whomever is bartending that a Manhattan should be served up--not on the rocks--but, if I remember to do that, they do a fine job of mixing it up. read more

Not bad. Food would have to be better to justify the price, for me. We had crab cakes to start. These were pretty good, but very small. 5 for $12, each were about 1" in diameter. I ordered regular salmon and was given (and upcharged) for cedar planked salmon- which I don't like. No offer to fix it nor adjust price. I hate giving a bad review when our waiter was fantastic but for Mother's Day we decided to come here to eat. $90.00 for four people later, we were so disappointed in the food. This restaurant was OK. The food was iffy. One dish had to be returned and remade. There was no mention of any discount or anything like comping that dinner because it was messed up. When it was made correctly, a seafood pasta, it was just a mediocre dish. It took two asks to get plates to use for our three appetizers for our table. I went with friends on a Tuesday evening. It was my first visit there. There were quite a few people eating there, so it was a bit busy. The restaurant decor is both chic and elegant. Very comfortable. Servers were friendly and helpful. One had the salmon and said it was very good. (He didn't want to share, so it must have been!) Another had a chicken and pasta with what seemed to be an alfredo sauce. She said it was good but nothing outstanding. I had the Kingston cut steak. It's very tasty. I ordered it medium, so here's my tip on a sirloin: order it medium well and it will be tender. Our side was a piece of zucchini butterflied and with melted parmesan and mozzarella. It was also tasty. The salad was just a salad. For desert we tried the cheesecake and it was good, I had a slice of ombre cake! It was huge (you'll want to share) and we decided it tastes like a fruitloop! It really was good! It was a pleasant experience but just so you know, pricey.
