I've never written a Yelp review before, mostly because I've had lots of work done painting,…read morecarpet, handyman type jobs and it seems like people have lost their work ethics, I was put in this awful situatio with my landlord of 23 years not wanting to give me my security deposit back and I left the place better than when I first moved in, he's cheap and didn't fix anything so I was insulted and hurt that he would deny me my security deposit so I was on a mission to get my money back so next stop was civil court and my landlord being the sneaky person he is doesn't let anyone know his home address so when I filed my papers and realized the sherif would not be able to find me I became so stressed and depressed so I started looking for a process server, this for me was a scary experience because there are so many rip off's and scam artist out there on the internet and when I first spoke to Chris I immediately knew I could trust him, he calmed me down and reasured me this was no big deal and he was gonna help me, well my stress and depression were gone, You know when you can tell someone is a good person and I got that right away with Chris and I had no fears of sending him money to get started on solving my problem, and that's exactly what Chris did, and he's awesome at what he does, my landlord was doing everything to hide from Chris but he hung in there and then I got that wonderful text from Chris saying he was served, wow did my stress go away! So now fast forward to today, where I have won my case, but the cheap landlord won't pay me, and once again I felt lost, basically, now what am I gonna do? Then I get a call from Chris checking up on me, and I let him know what's up with my no pay, and Chris has a solution for me, he's got a way to get me paid! OMG, I can't tell you what a relief that phone call was, and that's why I'm sitting here with my back pain, taking the time to write this, my first Yelp review, because I believe good hard work and concern for his clients' well-being should be written about. The previous process serving company I used had already made four unsuccessful attempts. However, through an ingenious method I've never seen used before, Chris was able to quickly and smoothly complete the service on his very first attempt. He then promptly sent over the completed proofs of service along with video confirmation. I was also incredibly happy with Chris's rates. If this is your first time suing someone, you might initially feel like a professional process server charges a lot for what seems like simply handing over papers, but trust me, his fees are more than reasonable. Unlike most other servers who either charge per attempt or cap their attempts per fee, Chris guarantees unlimited attempts and, if needed, unlimited stakeout time. This virtually ensures a successful delivery unless the person decides to never leave their house again. Knowing Chris offers unlimited attempts gave me total peace of mind that I wasn't going to continuously burn money on failed tries, and I can't recommend him enough if you're dealing with an evasive defendant. Finally, Chris is just an all-around friendly and genuine person. He kept me updated via text throughout the process and also made numerous phone calls to walk me through everything in great detail, which I really appreciated. UPDATE: promptly after posting this review, they called and threatened to file a defamation lawsuit…read moreagainst me: "We will be filing a Small Claims lawsuit for defamation in the amount of $12,500 against you for defamation. We will also consider hiring a lawyer and take this to civil court and sue for defamation for over $35,0000 if the negative review isn't removed right away. We update you right away and sent the Non service report within a reasonable time frame." Stay far far away. ___________ Failed to serve, failed to promptly communicate that they failed to serve. A different process server was able to serve within 15 hours, while By The Book failed over a two-week period. I hired By The Book on Feb 26, and added on their rush service since my court date was set for March 28. I followed up the following week on March 3 and was informed that the server failed to serve, and hadn't finished all the attempts yet. I gave phone numbers and additional information. On March 11, a week later, I asked for an update, and did not received a response. I followed up again on March 13 and was told that the server failed to serve 5 times, and the reason for all was "no access to property", and that they were done. I asked if the server had tired anything different given that they learned the first time that they didn't have access to the property, and By The Book told me to call the server directly. By now, the court date was less than 2 weeks away, and so I ended up trying with another process server (not By The Book). She was able to serve within 15 hours, and was surprised about the previous server not having access to the property, because she was able to walk right up to their apartment door (and even sent me photo proof) or her serving the defendants. Absolutely do not waste your money with By The Book.
