The pizza is very good and that is why it gets a 4-star. As for the buffet a 3-star at best! This place offers a buffet on weekdays. Not sure about weekends. The buffet is pizza, broasted chicken and some other pasta items. Also included is a salad bar. Most of the time you can find the pizza you are looking for on the buffet. The chicken is always hit or miss. Sometimes good, sometimes overcooked. This time it was overcooked and never refilled during our visit. The wait staff is very good and always helpful. Clean place. This place is well known in the area as a go-to pizza place. My recommendation: order carry out. The place is a mess. While I was there on Friday (Nov 25th), there were 8 tables that were left a mess. I saw people busy working on bringing things to and from the kitchen many, many times, but no one grabbed any of the dirty stuff--ever. People would come in and look for a place to sit, but couldn't find any tables without dirty dishes and garbage. The wait staff were friendly and the pizza making station very busy. We had delivery. The woman was really nice that took our order, but they were slammed with orders. Asked for an 8:45p delivery to give us time to go out for the sunset and get back before they arrived. 9:10ish we got our order. That was disappointing. The food portions were huge (I ordered a chef salad, my daughter chicken alfredo). We got plates and napkins but no utensils. Yes, I realize this is easy to forget, BUT, we were in a hotel. Thankfully we were able to get plastic utensils from the front desk. The pasta smelled great, but my daughter said it smelled better than it tasted. We were dropping our son off to college at Winona State (Go Warriors) and it was our usual Friday Night Pizza Night. Now, we're coming from upstate NY and have high standards for good Za. So it's only local shops (no chains...ever). We hit Yelp and this place popped up at the top and that was for good reason. We ordered a large thin crust with mushroom and pepperoni. Their crust is wafer thin almost like a cracker and held the topics perfectly. Mozzarella had a rich depth of flavor (even a bit salty) and was not some Cisco Foods bulk cheese option you find at so many low caliber places. The sauce was delicious. Not too much either and let the other flavors come through with each bite. The edge crust was not too much and helped keep the toppings at bay from your fingers. We also ordered a chopped Italian salad. Nice mix of basic "side salad" options yet the size was large enough for four people. So be prepared for what your ordering. Everything in the salad was fresh cut and delighted all that consumed it! The fresh garlic parm breadstick was also a "nice to see" item that my son devoured in 3 bites. Overall the experience was great. And I should mention the staff/owners are like your grandparents working the kitchen. Delightful, kind, and genuine people that I was so glad to see are still out there in this crazy upside down world we are currently living in. Visited during homecoming. Shared a table with friends who ordered about $50 worth of food. I joined them and brought in a small vegan sandwich from the co-op across the street. After I ordered a Diet Coke and vegan enjoying it with my sandwich I was told I couldn't bring in food. Being a vegan means I can't have pizza they serve. I ended up leaving and returning to the co-op where they have a lovey sit down area to enjoy my food. Didn't feel welcome at Sammy's and will not be returning. read more

I'm giving 4 stars to a 3 star experience because the Pizza is that good. Sammy's is a Winona institution and we visit every time we are in town. The sausage alone is worth an automatic 2 star review if everything else was a disaster! We called for pickup. We were told 30 minutes, and when we arrived 29 minutes later, there were 4 employees making pizza in the front area, and two servers. Not a single one greeted me when I arrived and walked up to what I assumed was the take out / payment counter. After several minutes I told the female server I was here for pick up. She advised the pizzas were still cooking and about 10 more minutes. There was no follow up, and others that came in for pickup were as confused as I was. Customer service is low on the priority list, but that is the new normal at most Winona eateries. Once you take your first bites of pizza, the end result was worth it. read more

I was going to order some food and support but after hearing the price, I about died!!! 60.00 for a lg pizza and 2lbs of wings. I understand they want to save their company and shit but I can't afford 60.00 to eat!!! We as customers are hurting too... We've never ordered the salad bar or other menu items, just keep it simple with a great pizza and a pitcher of beer or pop and we've never been disappointed. Full disclosure: I love the Sammy's Pizza restaurants in Duluth and Hibbing. The Sammy's in Winona doesn't appear to even be related. My pizza was very undercooked--I am not a big fan of white cheese on my pizza. I nibbled around the edges while waiting for the waitress to come back and found out that since I took the corner piece, they couldn't throw it back in the oven. Sad. My wife's spaghetti was good though with huge portions of pasta--Hooray! The decor is similar to the locations in Duluth which is fine. Watch out for the Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga machines in the back if you have epilepsy as they will give you a seizure from the flashing monitors. Bottom line: if you are okay with bad service but good pizza, eat at Godfather's down the street. read more

We have been eating Sammy's pizzas for over 40 years and are very disappointed in the change in their pizza sausage. It used to have a very good seasoning and was excellent sausage. The current sausage flavor/quality is not even close to what it used to be. Our Crew Pizza last night had 4 pieces of sausage that we could not even eat, because of the fat in it. Sammy's could use a larger beer selection (I think they only have 3 beers on Tap) and it can be a bit cramped in there on the weekends, but the pizza more than makes up for it.
