Had a great experience at Big Al's. My boyfriend and I biked over around 7pm. It was great to sit outside with the live band. Speaking of the live band they were great! Loved the song choices and the guys were hilarious! I got the seasonal street corn pizza and it was sooo good!! My boyfriend got the big Al's special and he really liked his as well. A local gem in the middle of downtown La Crosse, this pizza place has history and charm. The service was top notch. The beer was cold and the food was great. We had fried pickles and spinach artichoke dip for appetizers. Our only wish was that there was more dip in the bowl! We had two pizzas; the taco supreme, and the Al's favorite. Both were excellent. We had two adults, two teens, and two seniors; we all had a blast and plenty of leftovers! It looks like they also have an outdoor patio space, I can't wait to try that out! read more

Over all I like Big Al's. I tried the Deep Dish, and don 't believe its worth over $33. It tasted ok, slight burnt taste. There was more cheese and sauce perhaps. The only real thing "deep dish" about it was the thick outer crust that I couldn't really eat, the rest is thin. It was a 12", 4 topping. But it's not really a 12" if you throw away 2" of the outer crust. I do like their thin crust, could have got 2 specialties of those for this price (Had it Delivered and with $6 tip it was about $49). I still need to try the Hand Tossed and Pinsas. I also know their Brisket and Pulled pork Sammiches are good too. read more

I can't comment on how the actual restaurant is because we ordered for delivery through Good Eats. We ordered the sausage and pepperoni pizza and the spicy garlic chicken one. We also ordered what we thought were little cheesy bites but turns out they were like pizza fries. Not what we expected. The crust is really lacking. I'm pretty sure it's just a premade crust and toppings added for the 12/16 inch pizzas. The chicken one was really good. We all agreed we'd order that again. The sausage and pepperoni was alright. The cheese sticks lacked flavor and we also ordered cheese curds which we all agreed were terrible. They were basically deep fried cubes, not traditional breaded curds. read more

First and last time to this unprofessional place. We was the only customers in there so I guess that should have been our first sign. Ordered 3 pizzas and one was extremely burnt. When we expressed this to our server she went and brought over manager. She said unfortunately this is how we make our pizza so then we asked why the other 2 were not burnt. Manager was very rude and gave rubbish answers ! Wanted to give 25 percent off pizza instead of apology and said I will take care of this. Very unprofessional and just wanted to argue with us raising her voice. Very belittling! She needs to find another job as she definitely has no manager skills. read more

Good pizza but not happy watching groups show up after us and get served their full meal before us!! We sat at the bar and when I confronted the bartender about it she said it was because we ordered appetizers and it caused our order to take longer. That's a bald faced lie, I worked in restaurants and know when a server is giving the customer the runaround. If they would've apologized about the screwup I'd overlooked it but not a lie. Big Al's used to be the king of pizza in La Crosse. I ate there at least 3-4 times per month. I haven't eaten there in over 10 years because I moved out of town. I was back in La Crosse and had to eat at Big Al's. The pizza was bland, no flavor hardly any toppings and overpriced $20.00 for a 3 topping 12" pizza. Since I heard that this place serves really good thin crust pizza, I've really been wanting to try this place out, however, with the whole pandemic going on it took me a while to finally get around to it. Anyway, it was a late Friday afternoon, I finally decided to take a chance and try them out. Luckily, it was before the dinner rush, so I took the opportunity to order a pie for take-out. The restaurant itself is located in the middle of downtown, so you will have to find street/public parking. Inside the restaurant, they had an open and inviting atmosphere. It really reminded me of an old school pizzeria with dark wood furniture, stained glass lampshades, and exposed brick walls. There was barely anyone in the restaurant at the time, but I was greeted promptly. The server directed me to the bar where I was greeted by a friendly bartender who took my order. I decided to go with a "build your own" 16-inch pie with half cheese and half Italian sausage. Service was great and my order only took about 15 minutes to come out. When I got home, I lightly reheated my pie in the oven. The crust had the perfect thinness and a lovely cracker-y, crispy, crunch to it. The bottom of the crust had some decent coloration, but I felt it could have been slightly darker and more golden brown in my opinion. The sauce had a light well-rounded tomato flavor, not too tart and not too salty. The mozzarella cheese was melted perfectly and slightly charred which gave the pie extra texture. The sausage was not too aggressively seasoned, which I very much appreciated. I would have preferred the pie to have had a bit less cheese and more sausage on the sausage half, but overall the flavors and components of the pie were balanced and tasty. We come here a few times a year, any time we're in town. The pizza is always solid; good sauce, crust, and sausage. As a bonus, we love the hot honey as a topping, makes a great pizza. Ownership (?) or management really should make "closing" time clear to then then stick to it. "We accept orders until 9:45" is something all can understand. Right in the heart of downtown La Crosse. Walking distance from my Hilton brand hotel. That's always a bonus for me. They have a cute outdoor seating area in a courtyard between Al's and the neighboring building. We caught them on Labor Day and it was a gorgeous summer night. Our waitress, Maddie, made us aware of a $20 special on ALL large specialty pizzas. Since we were there for the pizza, we ordered an Al's Special. I also personally ordered a "Pompeii" beer from Toppling Goliath Brewing. This is a fantastic micro brew and pairs with pizza quite nicely. The pizza was served with a delicious thin crispy crust. Toppings were plentiful and buried beneath a copious amount of mozz. Cooked to a perfect crispy brown on top, it did not disappoint. I should also make note of the square MN cut slices and the AWESOME homemade sausage. The sausage appeared to be rolled into small balls by hand. Fantastic! If you're looking for pizza downtown, don't do a chain, but rather enjoy this local gem. read more
