The Deerfield Beach Historical Society is the main historical organization for the city of…read moreDeerfield Beach. They operate so many events its amazing that they are just an all volunteer organization. The key property is the 1923 historic house, The Butler House, which offers tours on Saturdays and by appointment only. The Butler House is next to an over 100-year old Banyan tree, which is a great location for weddings and events. The other facility they operate is the Cultural Center & Museum, which is across the street. The Cultural Center is a resource center available for all organizations in Deerfield Beach. The Center provides art exhibits, concerts, art classes, movie nights, historical lectures and community events. A third facility they operate is the Old Schoolhouse, which opens by appointment only as well as on Saturdays for different organizations. One side of the Schoolhouse replicates as a 1920s schoolhouse and the other is used as a meeting space. The Society also maintains an archive and is available for research by appointment. The Society is a great city resource and tries to save the historical buildings in the area.

This is one of the most elaborate Christmas displays put together by a private home. For the…read moresecond year in a row, we enjoyed walking around and taking pictures of this delightfully decorated home. Over 170,000 lights framed the house and the decorations all over the yard. Many of them were mobile decorations, my favorite being the Christmas gift conveyor out of the Santa's workshop hut. Just ingenious and delightful. The family is very patient and very good with all people on their property. Some want to touch the moving train, the displays, the lights, and they politely say, please do not touch the displays. A great place to get into the Christmas spirit ! It's tough to find parking since this is a private residential neighborhood, but if you are willing to walk a few blocks, you should be able to find a parking space.

They close a section of a street and that has warehouses. I got here around 6:30 . It got really happening after 7:30, more lively. The warehouses showcase local vendors and art work. Some of the artists are physically there also. It's actually nice. You can ask them questions. The open air smells yummy. Specifically when the food truck are working there cooking magic. Over five diferent type of food trucks here. They had a talented live performer and music playing at the other side of the street. They did a good job putting this event together.

You also get "seasoned" by music from reggae to classic rock and everything in between. It's definitely a fun night out in the 954 (and worth a drive up this way). Sunrise Ave is the better route from I95 especially to try and find street parking. Do try, because the only nearby lot is $10 and egad, Cash Only (how retro and or tax evasive. Pompano Beach was incorporated in 1908. You can find the building for the historical society in Founders Park. The Historical Society holds many events in the city. I recently took their historical bus tour that began in the Kester Cottages in Founders Park and for two hours visited historical buildings in the city including the Bailey Hotel which now houses the BaCA Art Center in downtown, the Ali Building, the Sample McDougald House, and the Hillsboro Lighthouse Museum. Tours are $15 and the next one is March 9th. The Historical Society also runs the Pompano Green Market Saturday mornings across from City Hall. The market hearkens back to Pompano's roots as a farming community. Another event they are holding is the annual progressive dinner on February 20th which hosts a three course meal at three different historic sites in the city. The historical society also hosts lectures and public programs. They are currently seeking donations to refurbish the 1930's mule plow that resides in front of the Kester cottages. With so many great events the Historical Society truly offers something for everyone. You can sign up to volunteer, donate money, or see their schedule of events on their website.

If you ever want to know the history around Fort Lauderdale's African-American community then this is definitely a place to visit. Each room is made up of a different era with educational and cultural history. There's a sports room, music room, a classroom and African room. This museum allows you to see the development of Fort Lauderdale. I was unaware that so many African-American stars had roots tied to Fort Lauderdale. Museum is open daily and close for major holidays. The museum is operated by Broward County.

I have always had a heavy heart being the granddaughter of grandparents who had lost most of their family in the Holocaust. My grandparents came to the US in the 1920's when they were already fleeing from the horrid conditions in Poland. My Papa and his two brothers left and went to Belgium, then he and one brother came to New York, while the third went to Argentina. Papa, never spoke about this except to say that seven brothers and sisters and their families perished in concentration camps. My grandparents would never leave the US, not even to visit their brother in Argentina. So when this chance to visit the HDEC arose, I wanted to go even though my heart was crying before I got there. The museum is very secure and we went on a 1:00 tour. First we saw a short movie, where Anne Frank herself was describing what was happening. I guess hearing her words, seeing what the family went through was more real, then even reading her diary. Her father, the only survivor was given the diary when a co-worker accidentally found it. Then we proceeded into different areas of the museum, which included a Cattle car where the Jews were transported to the camps, and an Army tank that liberated Dachau. I could hardly look at the train car after we heard one survivor tell us what it was like. It was brutal. There was an interactive room where you can interact, and see artifacts from the war. The most amazing part was the interactive survivor who passed away a few years ago. He could answer over 5000 questions that people asked him when he was alive and was at the HDEC. This was only the tip of the iceberg. There were pictures of Anne Frank and her family, models of where they hid and much more. Pictures and stories of survivors and beautiful and heart wrenching art work. We hope to go back and spend more time there. We thank the knowledgeable tour guides, staff and survivor that spoke to us.

Our guide was digital archivist Deborah and she was great. There were eight people total in our museum group and we had the place to ourselves. Security was very tight and there's no big front glass doors to go into a lobby to buy tickets. Instead, you have to drive your car through a gate in the back and an armed former IDF military guy wearing ceramic armor will escort you through a locked steel back door: It is sad that this is necessary, America, and shame on Florida. Just sayin'. Jason was young, sweet, and funny and had good recommendations for where to get the best Israeli shawarma in the area. The HDEC has a very positive vibe for being such a tough subject, with all sorts of beautiful art. The interactive area is AMAZEBALLS! So beautifully curated. A highlight was two rooms you could go in and ask questions to interactive videos of two Holocaust survivors. It's really well done and fun and will probably make you cry a bit. It's pre-AI, so not super technically fancy, but it's effective and authentic. The big centerpieces anchoring the HDEC are an M4 Sherman tank used in the liberation of Dachau and a (restored) railcar used to transport Jewish people, one of only 11 in existence. The railcar still had its serial number, so researchers are tracking where it went and who might have been on it. It had a guard "tower" on back for security, which they said was rare.

The space looked like an abandoned shoe store…read morewith dinner tables, the d.j. couldn't mix one song into the next, and the food was high quality...for a prison. It gets better. I can no longer drink alcohol, but still enjoy beer (0.0% alcohol). When we asked them to provide a "zero" alcohol beer, they responded with "it's not part of the package". We asked them to just pick up a 12 pack and add it to the cost of the party. They said, "we can't, but you can bring our own." Seriously!? I ended up walking into my works party, carrying my own beer, that I paid for myself. How irresponsible of this business to NOT offer a non-alcoholic option upon request, and then suggest the guests buy and bring their own beverages. This wasn't a pool party at a friends house (B.Y.O.B.); this was a party for employees, paid for by our company. They should be embarrassed. Even more than I was, bringing in my own beer.
