Seafood paella and strawberry lime frozen margarita
    Grace J.

This is a great low key happy hour spot, perfect after a day of work. The service is always spot on, and I always leave well fed and in the best mood. If you're looking for a new early evening spot for good food and vibes, I definitely recommend. I ordered a large (it's HUGE) frozen lime and strawberry mixed margarita with the seafood paella. One takeaway is that you cannot order happy hour items until EXACTLY 3pm, so if you're only coming for happy hour be mindful of the time. I will also say that compared to other places, the food menu for happy hour is pretty limited--both times I've been here I've had to order full priced items from their regular menu as I was not interested in the ones offered on the happy hour list. Nevertheless, both times the food has been satisfactory!

San Antonio Bar & Grill is an institution with a large space to serve Tex Mex. The service is hit or miss and they may forget an order or two, but if you know what to order, the food is good. My wife and I enjoyed the enchiladas and ground beef burrito. Both were filling! Every table gets chips and salsa for free. We ordered the queso, which was good. The strawberry margarita was large and decent. (It's not amazing.) Overall, it was a good experience, but it is pricey.

Burrito. Tastes good, though a little heavy on the rice as filler.

Solid basics but unremarkable. It is a nice neighborhood joint to grab a beer and burrito or frozen margarita and a burger. The burrito and nachos are good standards when you want something simple and uncomplicated. The salmon is good as well, though we typically get the sauce on the side. It sets itself out as a place with no pretensions and delivers a consistent and reliable experience. The price point for some of the entrees is close to places that reach a higher bar, though overall it's relatively inexpensive.

First time going to the DC location. It was cool. Parking lot that can hold about 12-14 cars. Service was good, but waiter barely knew English. The grande margaritas are worth the $9, hh wings aren't worth it, 5 for $10, $2 per wingette, they are good, I had Thai chilli, but not worth it to me. I also had chicken enchiladas which were good, little small though. Sorry no pics, will get some next time. Inside is real tex mex, ample seating and for Hh, you can almost sit anywhere.

The tortilla soup has so many tortillas in it but they were all wet

The drinks were good. Unfortunately they have fell off with the food. The tortilla soup was not tasty. Now south of the border has the best chicken tortilla soup. This soup has no chicken. It was filled with a lot and I mean a lot of tortilla. It would've been nice to have some dry tortilla on the side for me to add. I had to add hot sauce to enhance the flavor. The Buffalo wings were tasty. I enjoyed them. The mussels were average. It did not stand out to me. I travel for a living and o do not expect the food to taste authentic. Maybe next time I will try more traditional items such as tacos and quesadillas. I was told that the quesadillas was tasty.

*Updated Review* Came here for "Taco Tuesday" yesterday. Well their website said they have specials but apparently that's not true. Or at least not at this location. We inquired with our server and he said they don't have any Taco Tuesday specials or happy hour. Oh well. Ordered some Mexican street tacos - chicken. They're pretty basic and were just ok. The drinks were also just ok. Not strong at all and definitely tasted watered down. The service was ok. I'm certainly not in a hurry to come back here. I mean it had been four years since my last visit.

The service is great! The drinks are super strong and nice and cheap. This is a perfect place for Mexican cuisines

Great drinks, yummy food, and good service for the win! I went here for a friend's goodbye party with a party of four. We were seated right away on Tuesday evening and it was not crowded but there were people filling the space. Everyone in my party ordered frozen margaritas which were half price. I couldn't drink so just got a water. Yum. Lol. My friends all ordered hearty meals which they enjoyed but I had to stick to something quick and light so got the tortilla soup which was so yummy. I will come here again just for the soup (and the drinks when I can drink).

Mussels andaluz. Tasty with the wine recipe!
    Nio W.

This place has its ups and downs. The beef fajita meal was tasty and reasonably priced. It's very comparable to other places that sell the same food item. The mussels andaluz were a nice appetizer. The mussels were decent but the wine recipe was what made it so much better. The waiter was very friendly and pleasant. The ambience is average. There are parts that are attractive and other parts that look run down. There are options to eat outside but for groups of 2-4. My wife ordered the avocado salad which seemed very appealing from the description. It was $10.95 but she wanted to add shrimps to her order. It sounded like a good idea but it turned out to cost us $9 to add 6 shrimps to the salad. Overall, a $20 salad which wouldn't be terrible until you see the size of the salad. Never again! I suggest getting any of the other salads which had a larger quantity for less and included avocados and shrimp. We just didn't know better. The happy hour specials seem great but I've never experienced them but seems legit!

Nothing to write home about. Wanted to come here for a long time but the food was just decent. Drinks was really weak, not that flavorful. Only perk is that it's in the neighborhood. Not my thing. Go ahead and try it if you want but I wasn't a fan. The server was cool though.

    Asado Puertoriqueño
    Rob A.

Been here twice and have loved it. This last time I tried the Asado Puertoriqueño which comes with rice, plantains, and a "side" salad (which was pretty big). The steak was perfectly cooked and very tasty. My wife had the beef chimichanga and it was excellent. My only complaint is I'm not sure why they don't serve black beans - my dish cried out for black beans up go along with the rice but everything else was perfect. We've eaten here twice and the food was fresh and flavorful and the service has been excellent. It's nice to have such a great place in the neighborhood.

We shared the corn, which was perfectly sweet and tangy, ordered three lemonades, and tried a handful of tacos. The taco de lengua was tender and moist without being fatty, the barbacoa was savory with just the right hint of sweetness, and the carne asada was hearty, meaty, and full of flavor. We wrapped things up with a flan that was creamy and custardy--exactly how it should be. The packed parking lot says it all about this place's popularity. Don't miss out.

There are definitely a variety of taco choices. I haven't been unsatisfied yet. There is a small eating area inside away from the bottleneck area where people order and pick up their food but I don't think I'd ever want to eat inside since it's way too busy and the ambiance would be too hectic for me to deal with. There are other choices of sides or extras like maíz loco (corn on the cob with a variety of toppings like mayo, catsup, crumbled cheese, tajín...your choices), dried pork rinds, chicharrón (chewier and crispy version of the pork rinds), atole (hot, masa-based beverage made from corn dough, water or milk, sweetened with sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla). There are quick desserts to go too. I would highly recommend ordering ahead so you can get in and out or figuring out the less congested times. I've come during the dinner rush hours time but hadn't been planning on getting it ahead of time. I definitely recommend this place and will continue to come back.

The actual restaurant/bar drinks and bathrooms is the issue needs to definitely be updated. So back to the good part of the review: the food. Now I love me some Birria tacos and usually they are the size of a small corn tortilla...but not these! When she brought me out these ginormous (3) tacos I couldn't believe my eyes! They were the size of my open hand past my wrist! Now my pictures don't do them any justice because it took me 2-3 days to finish them and the side of Mexican rice which was also so big! So be aware that you will have food to take home for lunch or to eat later as I'm a grazer myself...lol. Now the margaritas were not good at all and tasted premade which for an authentic Mexican a spot as this seems to be should be a no-no! I did like the salsa that tasted homemade and asked if I could take a side of it home! As usual I love finding a diamond in the rough and this is definitely it! Cielo Rojo is a family-owned contemporary Mexican restaurant in Takoma Park, MD. The space is bright, colorful, and festive, the staff is warm and attentive, and the food and cocktails are unique and DELISH! I was side-eyeing the Heirloom Savory Waffle because I wasn't quite sure what to expect. But baby...it was interestingly delish! It leaned savory, with local smoked ham, Oaxaca cheese, watercress, queso fresco, avocado, and jalapeño vinaigrette, while the local maple syrup added just the right hint of sweetness. My only regret? Not ordering an egg over easy to go with it. That runny yolk would've taken this dish OVER. THE. TOP! I did order it to go with my leftovers. The Tuna Tostadas were another winner as it was fresh, flavorful, and delicious. And then there were the sips! The Mezcla Perfecto, made with clarified coconut milk punch, mezcal, lemon, agave, coffee beans, and sparkling water, was light, smooth, and beautifully balanced with sweet and citrusy notes. And the Un Millón de Primaveras was another lovely tequila cocktail. Bianca and Kiarra took great care of me at the bar. And Bianca and I even had a much-needed MAFS "gurl, what about..." moment. Sometimes brunch comes with food, cocktails, AND a little good conversation. And I'm here for all three! Thank you, Cielo Rojo, for the delicious meal, yummylicious sips, and the nice convo. The queso was good, but we would have preferred that chorizo. The waitress didn't check back with us until dinner was served so we didn't have time to add it. The tuna crudo was good, but too much sesame going on there and it took away from the deliciousness of that tuna crudo. I would give it a 3 out of 5. Now for the real deal...the birria was outstanding. The brisket meat comes in the consommé and is absolutely amazing. You have to get this! The carne asada was also the bomb! The steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare as we ordered it and the crust was so good you didn't need any of the sauces. I ate the steak separately and saved the rest to eat as sides with that super spicy jalapeño. Everything on the dish was worth the $45. With the last two dishes as good as they were, this place is a 5 star restaurant all day long. It's with the drive and the restaurant is clean and runs like a well oiled machine.
