San Antonio is such a nostalgic spot for me I've been coming here since I graduated from Howard, and it never disappoints. I love their happy hour and the food is always on point. This was my first time trying the paella and it was a 10/10 full of flavor and cooked perfectly. My friend got the mussels and a steak quesadilla, and both were really good. You honestly can't go wrong with anything on the menu. And the drinks? Strong and HUGE exactly how they should be. The music loud and get you dancing. Our server was fast and very attentive. The food and service was good but the waiter failed to mention there is an automatic 20% service charge on all bills. He brings you the little hand held machine to charge your credit card and shows you the tip range of 2 - 4%, so thinking this is his tip we gave him an additional 4%. Now he has a 24% tip. Also I had to ask for the receipt and that's when we discovered the automatic 20% charge. It was not on the menu. I questioned the issue with the lady at the door and all she said was OH, HE DID NOT MENTION IT TO YOU, SORRY ABOUT THAT. This is a great low key happy hour spot, perfect after a day of work. The service is always spot on, and I always leave well fed and in the best mood. If you're looking for a new early evening spot for good food and vibes, I definitely recommend. I ordered a large (it's HUGE) frozen lime and strawberry mixed margarita with the seafood paella. One takeaway is that you cannot order happy hour items until EXACTLY 3pm, so if you're only coming for happy hour be mindful of the time. I will also say that compared to other places, the food menu for happy hour is pretty limited--both times I've been here I've had to order full priced items from their regular menu as I was not interested in the ones offered on the happy hour list. The drinks were good. Unfortunately they have fell off with the food. The tortilla soup was not tasty. Now south of the border has the best chicken tortilla soup. This soup has no chicken. It was filled with a lot and I mean a lot of tortilla. It would've been nice to have some dry tortilla on the side for me to add. I had to add hot sauce to enhance the flavor. The Buffalo wings were tasty. I enjoyed them. The mussels were average. It did not stand out to me. I travel for a living and o do not expect the food to taste authentic. We were seated right away on Tuesday evening and it was not crowded but there were people filling the space. Everyone in my party ordered frozen margaritas which were half price. I couldn't drink so just got a water. Yum. Lol. My friends all ordered hearty meals which they enjoyed but I had to stick to something quick and light so got the tortilla soup which was so yummy. This place has its ups and downs. The beef fajita meal was tasty and reasonably priced. It's very comparable to other places that sell the same food item. The mussels andaluz were a nice appetizer. The mussels were decent but the wine recipe was what made it so much better. The waiter was very friendly and pleasant. The ambience is average. There are parts that are attractive and other parts that look run down. There are options to eat outside but for groups of 2-4. My wife ordered the avocado salad which seemed very appealing from the description. It was $10.95 but she wanted to add shrimps to her order. It sounded like a good idea but it turned out to cost us $9 to add 6 shrimps to the salad. Overall, a $20 salad which wouldn't be terrible until you see the size of the salad. Never again! I suggest getting any of the other salads which had a larger quantity for less and included avocados and shrimp. We just didn't know better. The food was good. The complimentary salsa and chips were amazing. The salsa was a little spicy and slightly watery just the way I like it. As others have said, your payment method and ID will be held until you pay which I didn't like so like an adult I calmly spoke up and they only held my credit card after I showed that my ID (name) and credit card match. Been here twice and have loved it. This last time I tried the Asado Puertoriqueño which comes with rice, plantains, and a "side" salad (which was pretty big). The steak was perfectly cooked and very tasty. My wife had the beef chimichanga and it was excellent. My only complaint is I'm not sure why they don't serve black beans - my dish cried out for black beans up go along with the rice but everything else was perfect. We've eaten here twice and the food was fresh and flavorful and the service has been excellent. It's nice to have such a great place in the neighborhood. read more

I live around the corner from SA, but have been coming for years prior to moving to Brookland. It has the laid back vibe of a dive bar without the smoke and sticky floors lol. (This policy is problematic as is) but he noted it was a written policy on the menu so we obliged. Then we noticed a white couple come in after who were not asked to give their IDs. The policy is very discriminatory and racist and so I asked my server to speak to the manager who did nothing and had no care in the world that we felt discriminated against in his restaurant. I visited on Oct. 3rd and have been meaning to include my review. This place now requests an ID and credit card when you arrive. They didn't used to. That's fine but I noticed that they did not apply this policy to everyone. The two white senior women next to us were not asked for a credit card and ID which we observed and confirmed with them. I was told about the policy as soon as I sat down and my two guests (also African American) when they arrived a few minutes after me. We brought this to the server's attention and to the manager. We weren't complaining about the policy but telling him that it needs to be applied to everyone or it can appear to be racial profiling. The manager flipped out on us and said that "Everyone here is treated equal!" He also flipped out on the server. The server was apologetic. Anyway...there are so many great restaurants I can go to in the region. My face may be brown but my dollars are green. You get no more dollars from me! read more

You're going to think the food tastes good here, and it does! It's not great food but it's good food. Sit down the do ask you for a card, which is different but not that different from getting a tab started at the bar. So no biggie. Margs are fairly strong, good price and portion, and definitely worth checking out happy hour. I like the queso, it's the thicker yellow kind but it has a nice flavor and kick to it. A fantastic restaurant with great food and delightful aromas! I stopped by on a whim on a Sunday afternoon and grabbed a table for one. A sizable table of people in their Sunday best had a dizzying array of delicious-looking texmex and breakfast foods. The smell was intoxicating. I was immediately won over. The restaurant looked very clean and the other patrons were very lively. I took a quick glance at the menu and saw one thing pop out at me -- chicken and waffles -- and was ready to order by the time my server brought a glass of water out and greeted me. They were out of the suggested side (potatoes O'Brien) and offered a substitution of mashed potatoes, French fries, or a fruit cup. Choosing the healthier option, I went with the fruit cup. While I was waiting, a complimentary dish of crispy tortilla baked chips and salsa was brought out to me. That house salsa was a great mix of flavors, classic Tex-Mex, but definitely unique and made in house, not something you buy in a jar. My food came out quickly, in under 10 minutes, I believe. What was presented to me was artfully plated with crisp, lightly breaded chicken tenders and soft, fluffy, golden pancakes, along with two bulbous bowls of fresh fruit (watermelon, grapes, & cantaloupe). Along with a small dish of candied strawberries and a personal dispenser of syrup, this was a big meal for only about $12 with tax. I am very impressed with this restaurant and I will be back. The only downside that I can report was that my waiter wasn't very attentive and I spent most of my meal with an empty glass of water. So I guess there's room for improvement, but nothing so small could stop me from returning. So I was here last night and this white guy comes in and decides to start coughing without covering his mouth. He was standing next to an older black lady who said something to him and he decides to start coughing again in her direction to antagonize her. She then moves away from him and calls him "disgusting MF" (because again, he was deliberately coughing on her) so he in turn calls her a "paranoid bitch". WHEN I TELL YOU ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE! Me and my friend went the fuck off! The bartenders who were majority minorities sided with the guy (the manager even gave him a hug before he left) because she called him disgusting first and even tried to make her leave because supposedly he's a regular and she demanded an apology. I was livid! My good friend who was very close to one of the bartenders spoke up about the mistreatment of a black woman how he didn't like how they handled the situation and they told him to leave too. Not too long before the whole ordeal the same rude bartender was joking about the Coronavirus. I will never patronize that place and their weak ass fucking margaritas again. read more
