I recently flew back to California for back surgery after relocating to Florida, and it gave me time to reflect on my experience with San Diego Divers. I had the incredible opportunity to take part in the DOD SkillBridge program, training under Lonnie and Malcolm while learning the NAUI way. Both are not only exceptional divers, but also outstanding mentors and genuinely great men. It was a privilege to work alongside them, and I highly recommend taking the time to get to know them and hear their stories--every moment is well worth it. At the end of our internship, another former Navy divemaster and I took a dive trip to Australia to celebrate the close of our military careers and to honor everything we learned through our time with San Diego Divers. Buyer beware. If your great is not the best $$ can buy expect to be treated poorly. Took my off brand regs in for service. The service guy spent 20 minutes railing that he'd never heard of the regs and hows he supposed to fix something he don't know... wow. Fast forward 1 week- I get my Compeatly destroyed - like it can never be used again - but was working fine when I brought it to them - reg back. It's useless. Trash. And they proceed to charge me FULL price for the service . Yep $293 bucks for them to destroy my 1st stage. Please note.i had tested the regs and they were in full working order prior to me bringing them in for service just thought big dive trip .. get them tuned up right? Nope. Now I have to buy a new 1st stage If you need air or help w some paperwork. These guys are helpful ... but unless you have the ScubaPro or some other band they sale... go else where... your life Depends on it. read more

Highly recommend for the NAUI open water certification. This dive shop is locally owned and operated and they care about your health, safety, and experience completing the course. It's the kind of experience you want to have with every business. Staff are courteous, competent, and sufficient to handle the number of students they certify in a single class. For 15 students we had a minimum of 2 instructors in the pool and 3 in the ocean. In particular, the lead instructor Rob is patient, knowledgeable, and thorough. 16 years of diving and this is the best shop I've ever encountered. They have a super knowledgeable, friendly staff with years and years of experience. I recently bought a drysuit from them, and the experience from selection through measurement and final fitting was outstanding. I have only been to this place once before for an air fill. On recommendations from my dive buddies, I finally took the Nitrox class. Lonnie was the instructor and I was very satisfied with his class. He understood the material extremely well and did a great job of helping me understand the technical side of diving nitrox and gas in general (much more than just reading the table). I recently completed my NAUI Basic Open Water Certification through San Diego Divers and I can't speak more highly of this organization after my personal experience. From the beginning I was drawn to them due to their transparency with costs and lack of fine print and surprises such as equipment rental being an extra cost etc. Their certification prices are higher than some you'll see but once you do the math and account for the equipment you'll need to rent elsewhere San Diego Divers is actually amazing value for money (especially if you take advantage of their Yelp deal). As for the course itself, it is fast paced as there is a lot to cover in the short span of time. Furthermore diving is a serious sport with serious considerations and consequences. It can certainly be done in the time frame provided but do understand that it will take time and effort to read, learn and practice on your part. The instructor we had was Rob and he's a great teacher. You can see how thoughtfully he delivers the material and ensures that the key points and concepts are understood. We were also lucky enough to have Lonnie join us in our pool sessions and lead our Open Water sessions (Rob had a pre-booked vacation during our course dates). Lonnie is on the board of NAUI and has been doing this for over 40 years. Generally he's a great guy with many stories. It is quickly evident and very reassuring that his teachings stem from years of practical experience and time in the water. He's encountered a lot and is a calming presence in the water which is something you don't realize you appreciate until you get into that first open water dive. A major standout point for me was the good amount of time spent on emergency procedures and diver rescue techniques. For me, knowing how to handle the bad situations underwater is vital and NAUI made sure that we not only talked about them but we practiced them both in the pool and in the open ocean. All in all, I would have no hesitation recommending San Diego Divers to anybody looking to get into diving. I would emphasis again though, commit yourself and be prepared to learn as this isn't a formality type course or any sort of walk in the park. I've had tank filled here, 4 tanks hydro'ed, and recently my regulator serviced. Malcom did the service, I had it the next day, he explained exactly what he did, showed me the intermediate pressure before and after. Gave me all the parts he replaced, mentioned that the filter was getting salt water in it and I should be more careful with the dust cap. Showed me how to set the backflow knobs for storage and for dives and delivered at $15 under his initial estimate. My husband and I just completed our NAUI open water diver certification with San Diego Divers and we both would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place for anyone interested in learning to SCUBA. We had checked out most of the shops in SD before walking into this one, and this was the right spot for us for the following reasons: 1. Personal attention - classroom was small with 7 of us. During the pool and open water dives, we had a 2 students to 1 instructor ratio and received much personalized attention to ensure you were comfortable and prepared. 2. Competence - the shop staff LIVE scuba, and we wanted to learn from individuals with a passion for their sport. Not to mention they have DECADES of experience under their belts. The shop co-owner Lonnie is even a NAUI board member. 3. Thoroughness - NAUI covers more skills and emergency situation training than PADI, which was right for us since we like to be prepared for anything. Janet and Rob ran a tight ship and insisted we mastered our skills (which required patience on their part, and they were extremely gracious). We are so grateful for their commitment to safety. Rob was extremely thorough in our classrooms. 4. Transparency - many shops we checked out had what I considered "hidden fees" - a price for the course, additional fees for rentals, for submitting your certificate and some even had an additional fee for course materials. San Diego Divers charged one fee to cover you through your certification, no hidden fees. They do require you provide you own booties (~$45 if you purchase at their shop). 5. Good people This isn't a SCUBA certification factory. It's an active and current shop, and all the staff seem to truly appreciate the water, and took their role as instructor seriously. The course was made up of the following instruction in order: 2 week nights of classroom (5 to ~8pm) Saturday/Sunday pool dives 1 week night classroom Saturday/Sunday ocean dives (5 dives over the two days) It was rigorous, educational and rewarding. Just left this spot to fill one of my tanks and let me tell you about my experience! I was approached by one of the workers as I was walking up to the shops back door and was very politely asked if I needed help. Super nice and chill young man! I told him I needed a tank filled and he told me to go ahead and bring it on in. He took his time to make sure everything checked out as I told him it was a brand new tank. While filling up he had his co-worker double check to make sure everything was good and before finishing he had the owner come out and make sure everything was good to go. I'm really big on customer service and these 3 gentlemen has my business from now on. I have no affiliations with these guys and let me tell u how impressed I was with how thorough they were. Very frustrating experience. I purchased new neck and wrist seals for my dry suit back in April of this year from SD divers. Due to a back injury the suit sat in my bedroom closet with a nice coating of protalc on all exposed surfaces of the seals up until last month when I started diving it again for a total of 2 multi dive trips. After a few dives I noticed that the wrist seals were in extremely poor condition and after 10 dives it looked as if they were going to tear. Fellow divers suggested that I take it back to be looked at which I did. The main reason I feel that these were defective was that the neck seal had no issues and both were treated and stored the same way and purchased at the same time. Not to mention the less than a dozen dives on them. When I showed them to Lonnie he agreed that there may have been an issue with the mold after he inspected. He initially said that he would cover the cost to replace these. When I went in tonight to pick the suit up and attempt to get an air fill I was surprised that they ended up charging me. Lonnie explained that he initially said he'd take care of it being I said I had them replaced a few months back and he thought I meant a couple months and when he saw it was in April he changed his mind. I learned this when I attempted to pick up the suit and never did he tell me that I'd be charged until the labor was complete. Very frustrating to say the least. I ended up getting 50% off of labor and a discount on the new seals which is quite different than what I was told. It's fine if I should be charged but don't say they will be covered and charge after the fact without letting the customer know they will be charged after all. I honestly am not sure if they value me personally as a customer or if I rubbed one of them the wrong way but I feel like I'm walking on eggshells in there a lot of times and that they are less than happy to have my business or see me for that matter. I hope this is an isolated occurrence and I will still go to them for fills and service but I will make sure to reconfirm cost and always triple check the quality. I have been going to them for years out of convenience and to try and support small independent businesses so I won't let one instance prevent me from saying that they normally go above and beyond for customers, or they used to at least. They explained to me that ozone is what caused the wrist seals to fall apart in less than 8 months even though the suit hung in my closet and was only used on 2 trips for a total of 10 dives. I'd agree if the neck seal didn't look brand new and if the wear was on all areas of the wrist seal and not in such a way that obviously was a defect in the mold as Lonnie initially told me. I wish there was a six star rating! Wow! a truly wonderful experience. Scuba can be scary... pool classes are great, but when you get out there in the real world, it can be a bit intimidating... With this group it was fantastic!! I felt so protected, well informed and safe with my dive instructor Rob Brauer- He knows his stuff! And teaches in a way that is easy to follow. Rob wants you to know what you are doing, and you WILL learn, but with a smile and sense of humor too. I appreciate that!! I also had the pleasure of having two other instructors on the dive, Griff Nosenzo and Janet Pinterits...both very talented, knowledgeable, helpful and encouraging! I felt confident walking away with my temp license, that i had learned quite a bit, had a great experience, and I can't wait to jump in and start diving again! p.s. It was sooo worth it to see the amazing and unusual under water animals...fantastic huge jellyfish, clingy ink-squirting octopus, Underwater birds!! sneaky sand covered leopard sharks and angel sharks... San Diego Divers is a breath of fresh air! I've been a diver since 2006 and this shop is by far the best I've been to in San Diego. Unlike some other big shops in the area, SD Divers has the customer's best interests in mind. No high pressure upsells, no attitude, no stress. With an emphasis on safety and customer service, I wouldn't consider going anywhere else. They'll fill anything, fix anything (if not, then it means it can't be filled or fixed) and teach you everything. Prices are very fair. I've come to the shop a few times with various equipment issues, and each time I was pleasantly surprised that everything was fixed while I waited! Their nitrox policy is the best in the business: they charge by the cubic foot, not by the tank, so a fill card lasts much longer. And on top of it all, everyone who works there is pleasant, friendly, and loves to dive. Scuba is a ton of fun, especially with a shop like SD Divers behind you. read more

San Diego Divers is an Outstanding dive shop. Now that I am slightly more experienced I feel like I can give an even more amazing review. To start, Advanced NAUI and NITROX certifications were really insightful. Lonnie Sharp taught the class and it was an incredible, professional class and was very interesting, it definitely made me a better diver. All you have to do is ask and Lonnie will teach you more than you could even imagine about dive physiology and gas and the truth about the RGBM model. I now actually feel like I understand what is going on! To say the least, Lonnie is on the NAUI technical training advisory board. Brent once again was a great knowledgable instructor. If I can put his teaching style into as few words as possible it would be Thorough, Detailed, Entertaining, and Extremely Safe. He blends In Techniques that were above and beyond the scope of the class. He never hesitated to help and answer all questions and give us personal attention needed for the night diving and deep Wreck diving we did. He taught us all about navigation, and believe me that can be the difference between life and death. He is the Man! This shop has all the cool gear ANYONE could ever need, rebreathers, dry suits, oxygen clean regulators, techie harness backplate systems and so much more i probably don't even know about yet. I have now been into almost every shop in San Diego, there is nothing that you need that this shop doesn't have. Attentive staff and incredibly fast turn around time for tank fills as well as ANY Nitrox mix you want, not just EAN32 or EAN36 like most shops. Safety and patience is their game. My fiance and I recently went through SD Divers for our Naui Basic Open Water Certification. We had researched a lot of different places throughout San Diego and we were extremely happy that we went with SD Divers. They offer the best priced package and there were no corners cut. The instructors are very professional and they do an amazing job representing Naui Worldwide as a scuba organization. The overall curriculum moves pretty fast between the classroom, pool, and ocean sessions, which is nice because it doesn't drag out. The classroom sessions are very informative and concise with the topics covered. The open water dives went great and the dive instructors were really patient with the group that we had. I highly recommend them for getting your dive certification. The shop makes getting your equipment and tank fills really convenient. I found this place because I wanted to get my fiance his Open Water certification for this birthday. I've been a NAUI Master Diver since 2007, so I'm a definitely biased towards their training program. I also steer clear of PADI because it always seems like their classes are overcrowded. San Diego Divers was one of only a few shops in San Diego offering NAUI classes. On the phone and via email, I had dealt with Lonnie and Janet--they were nice, informative, and prompt with email replies. Their location was pretty easy to access--right off of the 5 so I didn't have to deal with any La Jolla traffic. My fiance loved the course. They were able to accommodate his busy schedule by letting him do a hybrid classroom with online learning at no extra charge (I think PADI charges for this). The class fee also included gear rental, so the only thing he had to buy were dive booties. The class was small (about 5 people) so he was able to get ample one-on-one time with his instructor, Rob...I consider this to be very important for beginner divers!! They even let me tag along on the last day of the dive certification! I got to observe firsthand that these folks know what their doing and care about proper dive training. They offered a lot of advice and suggestions without the b.s. Not once did I get the feeling that they were trying to get us to spend money where we didn't need to. I definitely plan on coming back here to get my dive gear serviced and my fiance cannot wait to get his Advanced certification! read more

After alot of research and trying to find the right scuba certification course, I am so thankful I found San Diego Divers. To be honest, at the time, I really didn't know the difference between PADI and NAUI. What initially brought me here was how reasonably priced they were compared to the other dive shops. The more research I did, the more grateful I am that my family landed here. There are things about NAUI that sets them apart from PADI and while, I understand, it can really depend on your instructor, I found NAUI to be the better choice in what they prepare you for. And the personal attention you receive from this NAUI shop, you just won't get with PADI without having to pay $$$$ more for it. From the beginning, Janet was so helpful and encouraging. Right off the bat, I told her what my fears were and she put me at ease before the course started and answered any questions I had. Although diving is fun, it's also something you need to take serious and his instruction reflected that. From the classroom, to the pool and finally the ocean, everything was well articulated and demonstrated. Janet was also present during the pool and ocean dives; she made necessary corrections and gave clear instructions. They make a great team. If I made a request for a larger wetsuit, they didn't forget to bring it in the next class. My new mask kept fogging up despite my best efforts to toothpaste the lens over and over. Without me saying anything, Janet brought toothpaste on the next dive and immediately started working on my mask so I could see. The attention to detail and their desire for you to succeed is pretty incredible. I had such difficulties getting through certain instructions---mostly, all caused by own fears, nervousness and overthinking. To be honest, I was afraid of the ocean and while San Diego is beautiful, they don't exactly provide optimal diving conditions. The lack of visibility freaked me out. I got sea sick while in the water--twice. Initially, I could not get my buoyancy under control and I had such a hard time using my fins the way they were designed. I was not a good swimmer and when I did, I was accustomed to using my arms. So I was working so much harder than I needed to. I didn't trust the ocean and I didn't trust my gear. You can imagine, I was a complete mess in the water. Even as I yakked my lungs out from being sea sick, completely embarrassed, Robert wasn't fazed. He didn't do ANYTHING to heighten my anxiety. I felt horrible for him being next to me as I yakked---I was grossed out for him and everyone else around me. There were no jokes or comments just his presence there to make sure I was OK. He gave instructions about being sea sick in class and advised me to take Dramamine but in my mind, I thought, it was really only boats I got sick in and how bad can it be IN the water? I learned quickly for the next ocean dive to take Dramamine and it worked! Rob was so patient with me and tolerated my failure to follow instructions. He was not setting me up to fail and he bent over backwards to get me comfortable so I could perform the tasks I was required to do. If you were willing to keep going, he was going to move heaven and earth to get you through and Rob was not about to let you take any shortcuts either to do it. Make no mistake, you will learn the skills necessary and he will spend the time with you as appropriate to ensure you understand. Alot of times, it's really that we get in our own way and that's exactly what I was doing. I knew what I had to do but nervousness, anxiety, exhaustion and lack of control were my stumbling blocks. If you're like me, having a visibly frustrated instructor DOES NOT help. Like I said, Rob and Janet weren't fazed by my issues; they were understanding and helpful--they've really seen it all. Not once did I feel like they wanted to send me back to the shore so their class could run more smoothly and I am forever grateful for it. Folks, I don't believe you aren't going to get this kind of service and instruction from anywhere else for the price here. I probably should have paid more for what I received. As much as I didn't want such personal attention because it meant them seeing what I was doing wrong, I couldn't imagine being certified without it. There is no way I would recommend going to a large class and not learning how to handle emergencies. I couldn't imagine going to a quick resort course and taking any shortcuts towards certification--those should be banned, in my opinion. This is not something to take lightly. You can put yourself in danger as well as the people you're diving with. I am now certified with my family and I feel far more comfortable now, especially with everything that went wrong. You're going to learn to recover and persevere with these instructors. What was wrong will be made right if you stick with it. I've spent around $400 in the shop in the last year. Around $300 was for my annual service of two regulators. I got one back 4 days ago and decided to test the work before I put it back in my dive bag. The low pressure plug missing. Then, I remembered that I provided the first stage with only the high pressure hose attached and all my LP ports were plugged. The second stage was provided with cap at the end of the LP hose. So, I come-in and point-out the obvious missing LP plug. And, add the fact that I need my other LP plug and LP cap replaced. A simple mistake that caused me some inconvenience, but no big deal. Then, the technician starts thumbing through his past work orders. WHY? Because he just couldn't admit to his obvious mistake of giving me back a regulator with a missing LP plug. And, he must have thought I was lying about the second LP plug and cap. I guess he was going to show me that there was no mention of either issue on the work order. Like what might have not been noted by the other guy that took-in my regulator was worth making the client out to be a liar. It costs $5 for two LP plugs and this idiot has a bucket full of them. But, he'd rather treat me like a liar over such a chicken-shit issue. Or, maybe he thought he had paperwork on his side and therefore he could charge me $5 for them? I'll never go back to that shop (and, I was just about to buy new BC's for both me and my wife). So, that idiot lost $1,000 worth of business for what? ... CHICKEN SHIT! read more

I came here to get my old Aqualung regulator setup serviced. I worked with Malcolm, who proved to be quite knowledgeable, practical, and polite. The parts kit for the older octo on my setup proved to be difficult to find, but he handled the situation very professionally and got it all taken care of. They also gave me a very good price for a few tank hydros. They aim more for equipment rentals than equipment sale, but they do have a good selection of masks, tanks, as well as some assorted ScubaPro gear. My roommate also came here to get NAUI certified. He had nothing but good things to say about the staff and the cert program overall. From his experience, I'd recommend it if you're looking to get certified. Got into diving 1 year ago and bought my full gear at this shop as we go to La Jolla. The staff is super friendly. Lanny the owner is very knowledgeable and will educate you on your options. He never pushed for the most expensive things, but instead tried to understand what my needs were to tailor the equipment. Prices were reasonable. I was not very happy with the service! I called to verify that they filled scuba cylinders the lady over the phone told me $5 and a 10 minute turn around. So I drove all the way from Chula Vista to Sorrento valley at the location. As I walked in,I told the guy who approcahed me, I just called and I needed to fill my tanks. Without missing a beat he instructed me to drive around back.I was then immediately bulldogged by the lady whom I presume I spoke to on the phone.As they loaded my tanks they asked me if I was padi certified. I told them yes and I recently left the military as a diver.I told them i needed the tanks to fill for a hull cleaning job .I even showed them my divers ID she abruptly snatched my id and took off with it .I followed her to the front office where she asked for my drivers license. And padi certifications. I informed her that I had just called and absoulty no one mentioned any certifications that I needed to bring with me .The employees were very rude and unprofessional.If you establishment requires any documentation for their services they should inform the customer BEFORE the customer arrives. As I write the review my boss whom she called earlier and was not able to get a hold of called back and verified status.(To top it all off they give military discount and I didn't get one because after I paid he saw my navy federal card and he said were you ex miltary .I stated yes just like i said eariler i was a DIVER in the navy BEFORE) If there was a unprofessional check box it would be checked . These guys do a really good job on servicing gear as well as maintenancing your tanks. Have always gotten top notch service on our gear when we brought it in for service. Malcolm has years of experience in working all types of gear and does a great job. And the gear always works as it should when we go diving with it. They have the ability to hydro tanks on site which is not too common in my experience with dive shops. This is a big deal for me! read more

I signed up to take a class in September for one in October, but the shop never called me back to confirm or tell me the details. I called them again in October, to asked what happened and they put my name down for the same class offered in two weeks. This time they said they would call me the week before the class started to let me know the schedule for the class. Once again, they never called me. I guess I'll just go to their competitors, because they obviously don't want to get any new customers. read more

SD Divers is my favorite local dive shop. I am a resident of Irvine, CA, however, I am a grad student in Marine Biology who does research off Point Loma and La Jolla kelp beds. I found this shop last summer and now visit for regular gear maintenance, tank fills, and honestly, advice for anything dive-related or life-related really :) The staff is extremely knowledgeable about anything from recreational to technical diving and they truly care about the service they provide. I had a tough time with the purchase of gear from another diver recently and all I can say is that I would forever come here because of the kind and generous advice and help I received from them.
