* catching up on old backlogged drafts so this review may be a bit out of date Booked a dive with Waterhorse Charters after getting recommendations from local SD friends! My dive buddy and I traveled in from the Bay Area and this was our first dive on our own after getting certified in Monterey a few months prior. We still felt very new to the whole process so wanted to go with a reputable company that would help us out with all the planning and gear as we don't have much of our own. We paid extra for a guide to go down with us as well - he was so nice and patient, didn't make us feel bad about still getting the hang of the basics and really let us go at our own pace while being there to guide us along! We did Point Loma kelp beds and a baby wreck dive at Ingraham Street Bridge - both very cool dives and I even conquered my fear of a wreck dive (if that even really counts as one..... just something about man made things deep in the water freaks me out!!) The whole crew was super kind and friendly. They even had warm soup for us on the boat after the dive which was everything I never knew I needed!!!! Seems like they have a wonderful dive community out in San Diego! read more

This was a fantastic trip. The crew for the Coronado Island trip included Sam and Brandon, who were an absolute delight and excellent at what they do. The staff was very helpful at check-in as well. This trip took about the whole day, so be prepared. 7 AM to 5 PM is how the day went. There were three different diving spots, with enough time allocated at each spot. They offer diving with sea lions, which is a very unique experience. If you're scared of sea lions like me, it might be a bit scary because they are everywhere. There was soup and chips on board to grab whenever, and hot cocoa and tea were also available the entire time. Overall, it was a wonderful day spent with Waterhouse Charters, and I highly recommend them. read more

Highly recommend booking with Waterhorse! One, Gabby was so helpful at checkin. Two, checkin was super easy and unloading all my gear was really easy too. Three, the captains were super communicative and walked us through every part of the trip. The location (Coronado Islands) was beautiful and it was so cool to see sea lions & seals in the water. I also really appreciated the snacks, hot soup, and even a hot shower to rinse off at the end of the day. It was also great to rinse all my gear off at their shop before heading home -- it saved me so much time. I will absolutely book thru Waterhorse again! read more

This charter is the one to join. the destination is amazing we know this but the ride is usually boring/peaceful. Not here. They are very interactive and do rock shows (dubbed) . They serve lots of booze and non booze drinks. The one thing is the stairs in the catamaran are steep. Be careful. These guys do a great job though. Highly recommended. read more

I've scuba dived (dove?) with Waterhorse Charters about 5 or 6 times in the last year since getting certified in March 2024. They are a really great diving company. Safety is their number one concern, then right after that, ensuring that we are having a great trip. I guess I was super lucky on all my other dives, as visibility and conditions were great. Yesterday, we had rougher conditions, and they tried so hard to find us a great place to dive. I felt bad that they felt bad, I had also expected diving to be better based on my look at the various websites for conditions. Can't wait to get my kids out on one of their trips, I can trust their safety and hospitality to be top notch. I love how they offer a free tank fill at the shop after the dives (or on the boat if the trip back is long enough). It is the little things like that that make them 5 Star! read more

This charter company does a great job of delivering what you pay for. Two dives with appropriate surface time in between. Soup and snacks to grab at will. Gratuity is appreciated, but they don't push it upon you. This is a professional operation that I've done more than once now over the last five years and the experience has been the same. Great dive boat in San Diego! Boarding starts at 6 and you head out by 7am. Captain Charles and his crew Frankie were helpful and friendly. They have tanks and weights so you don't have to bring your own. You can also rent gear from this location.the boat is clean & well maintained. They have snacks and two different soups for you to eat between on between dives. With the water being so cold, we really enjoyed the soup more than we expected; honestly, other dive boat should follow their lead We really enjoyed our time on the boat and will be back! Note: If you don't scuba dive, I believe they also charter the boat for evening/night cruises around the bay where you can also watch the Sea World fireworks too. read more

Waterhorse Charters is amazing! I've dived with them at the Coronados Islands sea lion rookery and the Point Loma kelp forests, and both experiences were highlights of my year. Even better was getting my wreck diver certification with them--exploring the Ruby E and Yukon wrecks was unreal. Daryl was a rad instructor! The crew has always been kind, professional, and safety-focused. Every boat I've been on is comfortable and well-equipped with soup, drinks, and snacks--perfect for warming up after a couple cold dives. And all the gear I've rented from them has worked well! Great crew. Great food. Great diving. We hired a tour guide, Jade, and she did an amazing job at showing us the various marine species and prioritizing our safety throughout the dives. It was so nice to surface and get some hot chocolate and warm soup after the chilly dives. Got to play with the sea lions and various other marine species. All around great trip! read more

We had Danny and Brenden as our guides today and we had the best experience. We did the Wreck Alley dives and had a great experience. Brenden was in the water with us and if you needed some extra guidance, he did a great job making sure everyone was comfortable. We paid to have the guide since it's been a while for us and it was a great choice. The sites were really cool even with not so perfect visibility, it was neat to see the fish and the sites and we will definitely be back for other dive trips. I did get seasick for the second dive and couldn't go in as a personal choice. However, they made sure I was okay and my best-friend was still able to go in and have a great time. She saw a big star fish and really enjoyed the second dive as well. Like I said, we will be back. Thanks for an awesome dive experience! read more

I was in town and wanted to dive wreck alley, and came across waterhorse. Originally the trip was fully booked, but they were able swap their bookings to make more space on the wreck trip, which was great! Joined Waterhorse for the first time while visiting family in the area for a 3 tank dive out at the Coronado's. Captain and crew exceeded expectations to say the least! They were all very courteous, polite and accommodating to all of our needs. Briefings were spot on and our dive locations were fantastic! I always liked Waterhorse as a dive boat and operation, but I really do ha e to say that the new owners/management has not only taken it up a notch, they've actually taken it up a couple notches. Extremely pleasant and personable staff, in the office and on the boat, really help make it a pleasant outing. On the trips, they're very communicative and keep you abreast to current conditions and/or reason to leave a particular area. I don't live to local, but if I did, I would definitely get in on their monthly dive subscription; they got levels that will appeal to every wallet size I wish them much success and I really look forward to coming down there to dive as often as I can. read more

My dive/life buddy and I have been on Waterhorse charters many times: before pandemic, during, and after, on both the larger Humboldt boat, and the smaller 6 pack, and we have never had a complaint. The quality of this operation does not falter no matter what. We have done Coronado sea lion dive, still one of my favorites after years of diving, a truly interactive sea lion experience. We love the wreck diving on the Yukon, ruby e, old Ingrid bridge (still need to do the hogan). We have looked for 7 gill sharks in Point Loma. Whatever the adventure is, Waterhorse charters delivers an A+ experience. The staff is great! Captain Charles and Captain Zach always professional and keeping us safe. The DMs are highly qualified, friendly and helpful, and there is great communication from everyone. This is our fave dive boat charter in CA read more

Great communication (love the help and communication via text), awesome service and Waterhorse offered a fantastic dive experience on the HMCS Yukon. If you are diving solo and considering a guide, do not hesitate. Jonathan (very experienced Yukon diver) and the Waterhorse Crew really made my day/dive. I got to see so much more of the ship than I would have otherwise with such an experienced guide. Even with rough conditions and low visibility, they were one of the few charters actually running and the whole crew really turned what could have been a bust into a great day of diving. read more

Daphna was attentive, supportive, and helped us have a successful day of pool dives -- we felt like we were in good hands. The one hiccup was that the wetsuit provided to my fiancé for the pool session had gaping holes in the knees. By the end of the weekend, my partner wasn't sure whether more pool time would be needed before moving on to the ocean dives. To feel comfortable about the upcoming dive she checked in advance to confirm that the ocean dive suit would be a different one -- not the damaged pool suit. We were assured it would be. Come Friday evening, we arrived at the shop to pick up gear ahead of Saturday's ocean dives, only to find that the wetsuit set aside for us was the same pool suit with holes. When we raised the issue and asked about viable fixes, things quickly went sideways. Skyler seemed overwhelmed and unable to work through a solution with us. Mid-conversation -- while we were still actively discussing options -- Skyler walked away, leaving us standing there confused and disheartened. Emotions ran high, so we stepped away to collect ourselves. I went back in trying to find a moment of Skylar's time to help bring acknowledgement to the feelings that arose. It seemed at first we would get to have that but I then at a moment things changed and we didn't get to solve it then and things got busy. I waited patiently hoping for a moment to come but it never did. At the end of the day after waiting hours I could share the issue in more detail and how it escalated, but left feeling unheard about the issue when explanation of issue was responded with retorts of how I might handle things. I did my best to make it a constructive conversation still aiming for a solution - but the experience was disheartening and the point was reached that nothing was going to work. Unfortunately we didn't complete the weekend dives with the gear and the experience on Friday detracted from the whole thing. I do want to give credit to Daphna, who stepped in afterward to help us arrange things so we could still get certified on our upcoming trip. She reached out and was responsive to concerns and ultimately wanted us to enjoy the activity of Scuba diving wherever that would be.

This was the absolute highlight of the weekend. The boat was awesome - very spacious with a bathroom, they set up a floating dock and had a paddle board. Captain Tyler and Alex were attentive throughout making sure we had drinks, captured photos, gave us jackets when it got cold. It was also absolutely stunning views, I recommend booking later in the day so you can catch the sunset! We didn't want it to end. Thank you!

This company is the same as Nautilus Liveboards. What a terrible experience!…read more I booked the great white shark cage diving trip off of Guadalupe Island in Aug 2022. I was notified that access to Guadalupe was restricted. Initially, I was understanding when access to Guadalupe was restricted, and Nautilus allowed me to rebook for August 2023. Unfortunately, access was again restricted, and this is where my frustration began. Nautilus refused to allow me to reschedule for the following year, offering instead to apply my deposit ($900) to one of their other trips, however none of the alternatives provided a similar experience. When I requested a refund of my deposit, I was informed that I needed to speak with President Mike Lever and the only means of contacting him was via email. Despite multiple emails, I received absolutely no response from Mr. Lever. Attempts to follow up by phone resulted in vague responses from the staff, promising to remind Mike Lever to respond. This lack of communication and transparency was not only unprofessional but also left me feeling ignored and mistreated as a customer. To escalate the matter, I involved the Department of Consumer Protection from my state, hoping to find a resolution. Nautilus's response, through their attorney, was dismissive and unhelpful, essentially claiming that my state had no jurisdiction and I had no right to a refund. I am not one to leave negative reviews, but this experience has left me deeply disappointed and frustrated. It is disheartening to encounter a company that not only fails to deliver the promised services but also evades communication and appears to keep deposits without providing any reasonable alternatives or solutions. I sincerely hope that Nautilus Liveboards takes customer concerns seriously and addresses these issues properly. I caution others to think twice before considering doing business Nautilus Liveboards or Mike Lever. They appear to now being conducting business under SharkDiver.com to avoid the negative press/reviews from so many that they have stolen money from.

I dove with the Waterhorse aka Humboldt over the summer. They were pretty good. But then this death happened and now I don't plan on going back. http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local-beat/Diver-Dies-Off-Mission-Beach-102725754.html A diver is dead, after San Diego Lifeguard divers found him floating unconscious at the bottom of the ocean on Saturday. The 48-year-old man boarded a charter boat with thirteen other passengers for a diving expedition off Mission Beach. The divers were exploring the HMS Yukon as the first stop on their tour. The man was certified as an advanced diver and was diving alone, officials said. The other divers in the group say they saw the man during the dive; it wasn't until they got onto the boat that they realized he was missing. "A couple of the other divers that were there at the time, spotted him swimming around in circles like he had found something interesting in the sand," said Waterhouse Charters' Ryan Wilbarger. Passengers on the boat realized the man was missing when the boat moved on to another dive site. "My dad and I, we were coming back on the boat, started looking around for him and all of a sudden we were like 'hey, we were wondering where the guy was', so then we did a headcount and found out he was missing," said diver David Whiteside. The boat crew called the Coast Guard and San Diego Lifeguards, who found the man unconscious and tried to revive him. "Lifeguard dive team members found him about 25 - 30 yards on the west side of the vessel midship" said San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma. "He wasn't inside the vessel when he was located." Both the Coast Guard and Medical Examiner are investigating whether he had a problem with his equipment or if he had some type of medical issue. Police have not released the man's name and his fellow divers only had brief conversations with the man before the dive. "He was a retired veteran and going to school on the GI Bill and that's pretty much all we talked about," Whiteside said. This is the third death of a diver at the Yukon since it was sunk off Mission Beach in 2000. The others, a man and a woman, were also known to be experienced divers. Incredible Dive Day with Waterhorse Charters , Fun for Everyone! What an amazing day out with Waterhorse Charters! I joined their trip to the Coronados Islands in Mexico, and it turned into one of those perfect, unforgettable days on (and under) the water. Right from check-in, the crew made everyone feel welcome, friendly, professional, and super organized. They handled all the logistics for crossing into Mexico so we could just focus on enjoying the dive adventure. The boat was spotless, comfortable, and really well set up for divers and ocean lovers of all kinds. What I loved most was the diversity of the group onboard, we had everyone from a 12-year-old junior diver to seasoned pros with hundreds of dives under their belts. There were freedivers, snorkelers, and first-time ocean adventurers, all sharing the same excitement. The Waterhorse team made sure every single person felt included, safe, and part of the fun. The ride out was smooth with gorgeous views and dolphins along the way. Once we hit the Coronados, it was like diving into a nature documentary, crystal-clear water, colorful marine life, and those incredible playful sea lions stealing the show! They zipped around us, blew bubbles, and showed off their acrobatics, while we laughed into our regulators trying to keep up. Between dives, there was great energy on the boat , people swapping stories, showing GoPro clips, sharing snacks, and just soaking up the sunshine. The crew kept everything running smoothly while making it feel relaxed and social. Whether you're a total beginner, a seasoned diver, or just someone who loves the ocean, Waterhorse Charters delivers the perfect mix of professionalism, fun, and community. You can tell they truly love what they do, and it makes the whole experience feel special. I can't recommend them enough, the Coronados trip is a must-do for any San Diego adventure seeker. I arrived at the boat with a group of five divers at 7am. As soon as we pulled up in the parking lot, the Captain acted irritated that people had arrived. I believe his name was Ryan. After we hauled our recreational dive equipment to the boat, the Captain said to leave it on the dock for another 20 minutes while he finished prepping the boat. After the 20 minutes had elapsed, the Captain said "what is all this nonsense" with his eyes on our equipment. We had brought recreational gear and DPV's (diver propulsion vehicles). I said "this is gear for five divers". He said this is just a little dive trip and that he didn't have room for this stuff. He pointed us to the dive boat Horizon, if we wanted to bring that stuff. I asked if we could get a refund and he replied, no problem ! I am a professional diver with 34 years of diving experience. I have been a diving instructor with four different agencies and worked on charter diving vessels. I have never dealt with so much angry incompetence on a dive operation and will never return nor indorse this company. One of the individuals in my group owns a dive certification agency and wholesale dive company. He is already asking his staff to stay away from Waterhorse Charters and the Humbolt dive boat. read more

I had an awesome experience with this company! I got my PADI open water last year in Playa del Carmen, and I've been looking for a company that felt legit and exciting to me in San Diego ever since, but nothing really gave me the "warm and fuzzies." So when I finally saw Waterhorse Charters online, I knew I had found it! The process of scheduling the dive online was so easy and straightforward, and then I had emailed a few times because I always have a million questions, and they got RIGHT back to me and were SO super friendly. The owner was even out of the country on a trip and she still wrote back to me multiple times. For the actual dive, the Guide was so extremely friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and engaged/invested in my experience. He and the boat captain really helped me SO much with the equipment, as well. I'm a new diver, so it was really valuable for me. This was also my very first cold water dive, as well as my first dive in almost a year. I was super nervous, but I felt really supported and like I was in good hands with this company. I'm booking another dive for March or April with them!! I'm so excited they're here in San Diego because I'll use them all the time. read more

I had an absolutely fantastic experience with Waterhorse Charters on Sunday, February 2nd, for a scuba diving trip to the Yukon with Bernard. From start to finish, everything was smooth, professional, and well-organized. The nitrox tanks were prepared and ready for analysis upon arrival, making the process seamless. Brendon and Brandon were an incredible crew--knowledgeable, friendly, and super helpful. They provided an excellent briefing on the wreck, the marine life we'd encounter, and the best way to navigate the dive. Their passion for diving and customer service really stood out. They were also more than willing to assist with gear whenever needed, making the experience even more enjoyable. The highlight of the dive was the fantastic visibility--20 to 30 feet on the Yukon! It made exploring the wreck even more exciting, allowing for some amazing underwater views. The Humboldt is simply the best dive boat in San Diego. I have been diving with them since 2009. I have been on the other boats as well, but the Humboldt comes out on top. It comes out on top because of its crew. Every diver will tell you that a dive boat's design and specs are somewhat important, but in the end it is always the crew that makes the difference. Ryan, Greg, Anita, and Travis make that difference. They are very nice people, very knowledgeable about the local diving conditions, and very, very helpful. I have known Anita since she worked on the Lois Ann, then the Marissa, and now the Humboldt. I have switched boats because she is one of the best captains in the business. The entire crew goes that extra mile to ensure all your needs are met and to make your dive trip the best possible experience. I could go on listing every single service detail they do, but probably the best thing to do is to make a reservation and dive with them. Then you'll know what I am talking about. read more

I dove with these guys multiple times and they have been fantastic every time. As an inexperienced diver, I was really looking for a company that is very beginner friendly. My friend and I ended up on a trip down the the Coronado Islands in Mexico. Not only was this dive site very easy to dive, but the crew described the site to a T. Ryan, the captain, spelled out a simple dive plan for each dive site. Thanks Ryan! Being our first non-training dive, the crew was really helpful on all accounts. Travis helped us check our gear before the dive to make sure that we hadn't forgotten anything and THEN helped us by putting our fins on before you jump in, but also taking them off at the end! I dove with Waterhorse charters on Sept. 26-27, 2011. We all had a great time diving the Coronados Islands in addition to spotting Blue Whales on the trip out there. I have to admit that this charter is one of the best charters I have ever dove with. Not only is the crew friendly and willing to assist you in anyway possible, they also do a great job of catering to the divers between dives. The food they serve in between dives is fantastic. They provide a full briefing and make sure you know the secrets of what to be looking for during your dive. Zach and Karina are great. The boats are up-to-date and modern, and have all necessary safety equipment and a USCG inspection certificate. Check-in and getting gear onboard is easy with no drama. They provide food onboard, hot water and coffee for day trips. My first charter I brought food but they had enough onboard, and if you eat a good meal prior the trip you will be fine until the boat gets back. I found there were some regulars, but some people were from out-of-town, which made for a nice mix. It's ok if you are solo they will pair you up. Lastly I am a freediver and they took me on anyway, which I appreciated. Highly recommended. read more

My son and I recently had the privilege of experiencing how the Humbolt dive boat operates. I'm very particular about safety, service and overall helpfulness. I met Zach and was instantly put at ease. He was very helpful, along with his assistant Charles. We dove the Yukon, and through NO FAULT of the staff, there was an emergency. Both Zach and Charles acted expeditiously and professionally to resolve the situation. As divers, we want to have fun, we want good service and most importantly we want to be safe. Even though I got super super sea sick when we got to the 1st of the 2 dive sites, the overall experience was good. My husband and I asked for a dive master to come along with us, Melanie was way cool and calm about everything. I sat back for the 2nd dive because I was too sick to continue so Melanie took my husband for the 2nd dive. Zach and his crew were pretty chill even though I was puking off the side of their boat half the time. The crew was really quick about getting everyone's air topped off though and drinks and food was available the whole time. Everyone was friendly and very helpful. AWESOME The service from the the boat crew ( Captn Ryan) was way over the top. The dive location had poor conditions, and he reached into his knowledge base to get us over to a much better location ( at his cost - longer trip). The boat is a 5 out of 5 boat a dive boat. Soup, drinks, salad !, buns, WOW. And the head ( clean and usable - WOW!) Back at their office, full supply of rentals, nitrox, T-Shirts and a very helpful friendly attitude. Booked a quick trip to see wreck alley with Waterhorse Charters, I was blown away when all of us came up form very poor visibility on our first dive, the captain told us he would try to get us on some clear water maybe in the kelp forest, but after running about 15 miles south he just knew everything was going to be blown out - turned around and told everyone that they were going to give us credit for another future trip - WOW I have never seen a charter company do this for anyone -- Great Job Waterhorse Charters -- Way to keep costumers happy, I will be back to use my credit and for future dives -- WooooooHooooo read more

We had such an amazing time diving the HMCS Yukon. The crew and guides were awesome and made the whole experience unforgettable. They gave a really clear safety briefing before the dive so we always felt safe and well taken care of. Underwater, the guides pointed out so many cool creatures we probably would have missed on our own. The wreck itself was incredible, and the entire trip ran so smoothly. Great experience with booking, finding the shop, and getting our gear on board. Our dive guide, Dylan, was excellent. He has a degree in Marine Biology with an emphasis in kelp, so our dives were packed full of bio information. Loved it. Used Nitrox. They had two soups and lots of snacks to chow on between dives. Bring your autograph book since one of the Divemasters is featured in the PADI Rescue Diver training video. read more

I went out with Waterhorse on July 4 to Point Loma sea cliffs with a couple friends. We had Captain Lee and Divemaster Dylan. They are safe, fun and have great customer service. They do things right, this is the way dive boats should be run, great job! Visibility was a 30 ft, a sealion was following us, those with cameras probably got a few nice pics. Waterhorse charters is fantastic. Took my two kids (17 and 14) to dive the Pt. Loma kelp beds. The kids got a little sea-sick (my fault for not giving them Bonine prior to the trip), but the dives were great and Danny (the captain) and Dillon (the dive guide) were amazingly helpful. Both are not only exceptional divers, but also outstanding mentors and genuinely great men. Harbor sailboat is the best place to charter a sail boat in San Diego. Everybody who works there…read moregoes above and beyond. The boats are very well maintained. Dustin and John at the dock are very knowledgable and skilled in explaining the boat before leaving the dock and also assist with docking upon return when needed, which can be challenging at times. They make sure everything works and is in order. I have taken their ASA 101 and 103 class and I have taken private lessons with Captain Buck and Rob, who are extremely experienced, knowledgeable and skilled in teaching, if you like a more individual approach. Paige in the office is the best manager you can dream of, she always makes sure that the individual needs of her customers are met. She really knows the fleet and communicates well with everyone on the dock and makes sure everything runs smoothly and one can have the best sailing experience. I am a relatively new member (January 2026). I have taken the 101 and 103 and rented the Capri 22…read moresailboats. The boats are all very clean and very well maintained. The dock staff are always willing to assist a be there to help. Can't say enough about "Paige" in the office. I think she is the magic of Harbor Sailboats. She is always pleasant and professional. Now as I move to renting 103 qualifying boats I plan on getting experience on their Beneteau fleet. I had the opportunity to do a walk through on many of them and they are all very clean and well maintained. I can't say enough about the company and with the new construction underway, Harbor Sailboats will have a new modern office and dock area. If you have ever thought that Sailing would be something you would like to try I highly recommended them!
