I am genuinely grateful for this practice. I needed a root canal and was terrified because I didn't know what to expect. When I called to schedule a consultation, I didn't have much discomfort, just a sense that something under my crown didn't feel right. I was hoping to delay the procedure for as long as possible, but the receptionist encouraged me to come in sooner. Within a couple of days after my initial call, what started as intermittent nagging sensitivity turned into throbbing pain, making it hard for me to concentrate at work. I was relieved that the receptionist had me come in when she did. I met with Dr. Wong, who eased my anxiety. He was able to squeeze me in the following day for the procedure after my consultation. The nurses and staff were excellent; they knew what they were doing and were very professional. Dr. Wong explained everything to me, and the procedure, dare I say, was easy? They allowed me to choose a movie to watch as a distraction, and honestly, I didn't care what was playing. I thought I'd be wincing and clutching the side of my seat, but I truly didn't feel any pain at all--only vibration and pressure. I was able to enjoy nearly an entire movie. The entire event took about 1.5 hours. I am still recovering and have been told that any soreness may take a bit to subside, but it's nothing compared to the pain I experienced before. I don't wish a root canal on anyone, but if you have to get one, this is the place to go. They stayed late for me and looked tired when they were finished. Near the end of my root canal, Dr. Stephanie Lee exclaimed, "we preserved the anatomy of the tooth! Tooth anatomy is so beautiful." Beautiful? I looked to Betty, the dental assistant to whom I had clung during the procedure as if she'd looked after me since a time before teeth sprung up through my gums. Betty smiled warmly and asked for the umpteenth time, "how are you doing?" I attempted a half-mouthed smile. I had heard my teeth called many things, but never beautiful. You see, bad teeth were the unfortunate inheritance granted me by my father. "Bad," such an ugly word--full of the shame of childhood. No matter how I brushed, and flossed, and scrubbed, and rinsed, and brushed again, the fault always seemed to add up to my own poor performance. That's what old, white haired, men seemed to think anyway. And, old, white haired men have seldom learned to keep their own pearly white opinions behind closed lips. This new word, "beautiful," brushed my numb cheek with a gentleness and an insight so different from those unkempt gentlemen. It eased away a layer of shame and lifted a pound or two of anxiety. Dr. Lee and Betty had no malice in their prescription for post-surgical care. They had to judgement for the tears I had cried as they leaned back the chair or the squeaking noise that had escaped me during the injections. No one wants a root canal...and on top of that, I arrived to Dr. Ralan Wong's office very traumatized by a recent fall and with a lot of soft-tissue damage to my upper lip and front tooth area. I had left panicked messages with several endodontists over the 4th of July and his staff called me back promptly on the first business day (the others took days, or never responded). Immediately, they put me at ease and fit me in for an emergency appt that same day. Dr. Wong was so gentle and reassuring that he calmed me down considerably. He handled me with great care, and with enough levity to relax me but without ever seeming like cavalier about my situation. Dr. Stephanie Lee treated my tooth and I left happy with the procedure, her follow up, and the overall experience with the office. Seeing a dentist can be daunting but she made it painless. I drove nearly 2.5 hours from Davis to San Francisco on a workday to see her since she came as a referral. The office was kind to schedule a consultation and treatment on the same day. I had a root canal done at another office years ago that was causing some issues. Fortunately, she was able to retreat the tooth and I was able to avoid having to drive back to SF soon after a consultation for treatment. It's nice to know I can rely on Dr. Lee if I ever need her help again. I hope I don't, but at least I won't have to dread the process if I ever do. read more

First off I have a great fear of going to the dentist/orthodontist. Dr. Stephanie Lee was so attentive and able to help calm my fears before the procedure. Ralan Wong is a fantastic professional. I had my first root canal in June - I was referred by Dr. Polly Rivas office. He was able to get me into a cancellation spot and was so fast! My only disappointment was that I didn't get to finish watching "Catwoman" -- everyone has always talked about how a root canal is such a horrible thing, but it really was no big deal! Ralan Wong has a great manner - open, courteous, good sense of humor, smart and able to explain things well. His office staff are friendly and efficient. These guys are THE best!! My dentist told me a needed a root canal and I think I called about 12 other places that wanted me to come in for two appointments until I called dr Wong's office and they went above and beyond to help me and do the procedure in one visit- which only took about an hour!! Dr Wong was so kind and gentle and I even got to watch a movie while they were working on me which really helped with my anxiety (I fell asleep though just to show how relaxed I was). I'm also terrified of needles and I couldn't even feel any of them so all in all this was as great as a root canal can be and I hope i don't need to, but If so I will definitely be returning to dr. This was one of the worst experiences of my life. I developed a horrible toothache one night (why does it always happen at night?) and went to my regular DDS the next day. She diagnosed an infection and gave me a prescription, with instructions to contact SF Endodontics to schedule a root canal after the infection healed. I arrived at their office with enormous trepidation. I am petrified of the dentist, and the thought of a root canal filled me with fear. I believe I was crying as soon as I sat down in the chair. Dr. Dodson was initially very sympathetic and nice to me, but as the procedure went on and on and became more and more painful, I began to get really upset and agitated. He didn't go for that, and it was evident in his behavior. I wish I knew why these guys don't give a Valium or some other relaxant to their patients. Honestly, all I wanted to do was get the heck out of there. You would think by this time that a root canal could be handled a little better than the system of inserting tiny little metal rods in your root over and over and over and over. Pain so excruciating that I was screaming at the top of my lungs and we had to stop the root canal procedure until I felt courageous enough to continue. I was referred To Dr Wong by my dentist Don Nguyen for a root canal after a big chunk of my upper right premolar sheared off. The thought of a root canal had me practically peeing myself in fear of pain, but I finally manned up and made the appointment. Since I know how bad parking is at Laural Village (the other reviewers are telling the truth!), I opted to catch the always lovely and educational MUNI to my appointment. If you MUST drive and the lot's in full hell-like glory, another option would be to park over at the California Pacific Medical Center located a few blocks down the street on California. It's not cheap parking, but Dr Wong's so fast that your parking bill shouldn't kill you (unlike the rabid Saab owner trying to get baby radicchio). The staff was cheerful and quickly had me seated even though I was 15 minutes early (Dang, no chance to read the current copy of Real Simple that they had out). After a couple of quick digital X-rays Dr Wong was in to see me. Dr. Wong had one of the best chair side manners I've ever encountered and quickly put me at ease. After numbing, Dr Wong and his wonder assistant flew into action. During the procedure I only had two brief moments of discomfort, but they were so quick and so slight, that I didn't even think they were worth alerting the doctor about. I kid you not, I was done and out the door in 45 minutes. At the time I'm writing this review, nine hours post-op, I'm experiencing zero pain and have not even thought about pain killers. Bottom line: I've had hair cuts more painful than this root canal. If you need a root canal, Dr Ralan Wong's your guy. read more

Quick N' Easy Root Canal! I'm pretty sensitive about my teeth-- I've had them messed with quite a bit in the past year and I was really worried about experiencing unexpected jabs of pain during my procedure. The past three years I have been unable to chew on my right side. When my tooth has been filled/ worked on, it's taken multiple tries to get it numbed up & it's been painful. Dr. Wong said that these should have been signs to my dentist: SHE NEEDS A ROOT CANAL. Dr. Wong explained everything, was kind, patient and warned me when I *might* feel something. Like many folks, dental work brings up a lot of anxiety for me. I have found that one of the greatest sources of comfort is trusting who is working on my teeth. I can't express enough gratitude to Dr. Stephanie Lee and her team for the kindness, skill, and professionalism they showed during my recent treatments. Dr. Lee is a truly gifted endodontist: thorough, clear, and careful. She is also dedicated to pain management and making her patients as comfortable as possible. I had two root canals within a week and the whole office made the experience manageable. They understood my nervousness and anxiety and made sure to craft the procedure so that I felt safe and secure, and able to voice my concerns (or raise my hand if my mouth was too full :). In addition to Dr. Lee, I had wonderful assistants in Betty and Janine and was also helped so much by Pam, who made sure I was scheduled in as soon as possible, and assisted with a same-day referral to an orthodontist prior to my treatment. Dr. Ralan Wong is the SHIT! He's super nice, he cares for his patients, and lives up to his promises. I was referred to Dr. Ralan Wong by my General Dentist who missed a canal when my root canal was initially done. Dr. Wong was very thorough in locating the problem and providing an optimal solution. During my consultation I waited about 45 minutes to be seen, but who cares about waiting if it's for great service. I wish Dr. Wong was my general dentist because he is truly a stand-up guy. With that being said, DO NOT go to Dr. Librada Yamat in Daly City because with her "nothing is guaranteed." And sadly enough, I quoted her on that! I was referred to Dr. Dodson for a root canal (ewww!) and considering I hate (sorry to all dentists) going to the dentist AND my insurance is maxed out for this term, I was not looking forward to the visit. The staff was very pleasant and accommodating but frankly, I wouldn't care if everyone was mean as long as the dentist was good and well, he was great... super nice, patient, very personable, attentive to making sure I was comfortable and not in pain and (yes "Rebecca M") so cute. Never thought I'd say I want to have to get another root canal but if I was going to Dr. Dodson's I am not sure I would mind one bit. PS- I have never taken the time to write a Yelp review but my visit to Dr. Dodson's office was motivation to make this my first. Dr. Wong is a superb specialist and all my root canals have been done by him. I was terrified when I first went to get my root canal and was not a happy camper when I walked into this office. However, he was patient, well knowledgeable and made sure I understood exactly what I was there for. When it came time to have the procedure done he made it as painless and stress free as possible. Since then I have had follow up exams and he has always made my visits as comfortable and easy going as possible. If you need a root canal I would highly recommend Dr. Wong. Dr. Ralan Wong is the greatest. I went to him for a root canal and it was one of the least traumatic dental experiences ever. Seriously, not even as bad as getting a filling. I even got to watch a DVD during the procedure. He is not all warm and fuzzy and neither are the front desk staff, but I would definitely not let that stop me from going back if I ever need a root canal again. They are efficient, they know what they're doing, and they get the job done right. He also did root canals for two of my coworkers and one coworker's husband. No one is better! I have been a patient for well over 12 years due to a chronic health problem that causes severe dry mouth and the resulting major dental problems. As such I am a frequent visitor to the office and have had extensive work done on nearly all of my teeth, including root canals and several implants, with more to come. Without a doubt, I would never have been able to get through all of it without the compassionate care that Dr. Wong and his staff have given me all these years. He is incredibly skilled and knows how to handle the unexpected that may crop up. He is very warm and personable. His staff is fully his equal-Pam, Tina, Janine are true professionals who have been with him for a long time. They work as a very well practiced team, managing the dental care and administrative side of the practice with equal skill. They always find a way to fit me in if needed. Dr. Wong often calls me in the evening after a procedure just to make sure everything is fine and patients can always reach him after hours if the situation warrants it. People sometimes say "I'd rather have a root canal than..." some awful thing. But when you are in horrible pain because you need a root canal, it is a huge relief to get numbed and get that root canal for that is what takes the pain away forever. You will not feel a thing once you're anesthetized. There is no better endodontic practice in the area. You cannot go wrong placing yourself and your mouth in their hands. This review is LONG OVER DUE! I started seeing Dr. Dodson in Fall of 2009. I was referred to his and Dr. Wong's office by my aunt. They got me in immediately, which was good for me because it turned out I needed an Emergency Root Canal that very day. Dr. Wong couldn't do the procedure due to his schedule and had Dr. Dodson take care of me instead. I was very hesitant about the procedure I was about to have because I hate going to the dentist. Mostly because I'm scared to death of needles. But Dr. Dodson made me feel at ease and relaxed. He explained the procedure step by step to me. He also let me pick out a movie off their movie list and put it on for me to watch on the flat screen tv that hangs above the chair! Which was awesome might I add! How many dentist do you know that have flat screen tvs above each of the chairs for their patients? When it came down to the procedure I was amazed by the level of care Dr. Dodson provided. When my anxiety kicked in while getting numbed up, he was very patient with me and let me take a breather between shots so that I didn't freak out completely. During the procedure Dr. Dodson continued to check on me and even let me take a few breaks when he noticed that my anxiety was kicking in. When I left that day I realized the dentist isn't that scary! Later that night Dr. Dodson called me personally to check on me and see how I was feeling. He provided a direct number to reach him at in case I had any questions during non business hours. He told me not to hesitate to call if I had any questions or concerns. Now let me add my Primary Care Physician doesn't even call to check on me! When I saw him a week later for the follow up it was discovered that the tooth next to the one I just had a root canal on would also need a root canal. That's right 2 root canals. For my second one Dr. Dodson prescribed me something to keep me calm which made the process so much easier. And again he called me personally to check on me. After my 5 office visits for my 2 root canals I thought I was done! But a year later I got to see Dr. Dodson again, for my 3rd root canal. I spent more time in that office in 1 year than I ever thought was possible. But I must say that Dr. Dodson, Dr. Wong, and all of their staff were truly amazing. They worked with my schedule, got me in when I needed to be seen and they made the experience as pleasant as it could be. I have had a few dentist in the past 2 year who have all taken X-Rays of my root canals, and they all say the same thing, "These are the most beautifully done root canals I've ever seen!" So thank you Dr. Dodson you are a master of your craft! I have had to get a lot of dental work done and out of all my dentist Dr. Dodson and his staff are my favorite. I would recommend him to anyone! I wish he would do other dental work so I could go back and see him! I mean more people would go to the dentist if they could watch tv, have a friendly, understanding and really cute dentist (that is just a huge bonus)! My husband and I were both unfortunate enough to need root canals this year, and we both had positive experiences (as much as can be expected!). Dr. Dodson was very friendly and personable, and the equipment was very modern (digital x-rays!). I got to watch a movie during the procedure, from a very long list of choices. I picked Finding Nemo which I knew I loved, completely forgetting about the dentist office scenes in that film. Oops. Dr. Dodson assured me I wouldn't be screaming like the cartoon patient in that film, and he was right. :-) read more

I came here and saw Dr. Dodson after being referred here by my dentist Dr. Chad Lyew (another highly recommend professional!). I needed a root canal (ugh) and was not looking forward to it. My appointment was for 10:45 am but I knew I needed sedation so they told me to come in at 9:45 to fill out all the required paperwork and so the drugs would have time to kick in for the procedure. The only reason why I am not giving this place a perfect 5 stars is because it wasn't until 20 min. before my procedure I was given the sedation, so it didn't kick in until about half way through my procedure, so I was shaking for a good chunk of it (once it kicked in I was fine however). Plus about 5 minutes before we were about to begin (I'm in the chair, movie picked out, the works) they come to me with all the billing information and ask for a credit card. Couldn't this have been done 40 min earlier while I was waiting and at the front desk checking in and not all prepped up in the chair with a bib on? Dr. Dodson and his assistant were great. He was very gentle, nice, personable and professional and clearly cared about my comfort. If I was cold I got a blanket (and was tucked in!). if I needed to use the little girls room, no need to keep my legs crossed. Any pain at all and he was on it to rectify it. He was very informational, there was no question as to the status of my tooth, what was to be done and what follow up I needed with him and my dentist later. After the procedure he called to check on me and gave me his cell in case there was an emergency over the weekend. Nice touch and not many health care professionals do that (except my dentist, so I can see why I was referred here. They are two peas in a pod). The office building is a little run down on the outside, but their office is updated and very clean. They also have a huge selection of movies to watch while they work to help serve as a distraction. Overall it was a pleasant experience, or as pleasant as one can be considering it was a root canal. They also schedule check ups a few months after procedures just to be sure everything is still looking good. If you need endodontic work, you should certainly contact Dr. Dodson. read more

I was referred to Dr. Wong by my primary dentist Dr. Bratessani for an implant. The thought of someone drilling metal into my gum really concerned me and I was not looking forward to the process. However, I felt relieved shortly after meeting Dr. Wong. He is clearly an expert in his field and has the most up to date technology. He is also very patient and kind. He even offered me natural medication to reduce swelling and promote healing. One thing: be weary of the parking in back. I got a ticket for parking in a cross walk that was painted through a parking spot. It can be a bit tricky!! The procedure ended up being exceptionally simple with Dr. Wong's expertise. This is the most professional and welcoming clinic I have ever been in, and I have had quite a bit of oral surgery. Dr. Zachary Dodson was unbelievably patient and kind during the procedure. I especially appreciated that he described the entire process in detail to me and put up with my pestering medical student questions, and did a follow-up phone call that evening to be sure I was ok. AND he was CUTE. I don't think root canals can get any better than this. My favorite part of the visit was when Dr. Wong said "Well, it turns out there's some nerve left at the bottom of that root, after all, but since the tooth is dead and no more blood can get into it [from a previous visit to another dentist who removed most of the nerve tissue] the novocaine can't reach the nerve anymore; that's why it still hurts when I'm in there. I'm just going to reach down there with this barbed needle and rip the rest of that nerve out. Just 3 seconds of pain and it's all over..." Ha HA! I was screaming and laughing at the same time. I just saw Dr. Amanda Lavorini, the other endodontist in the practice, SF Endodontics. I had to write a review, because 1. I felt bad there were no Yelp reviews for Dr. Lavorini, and 2. I don't think anyone could have made my first root canal better. Dr. Wong was out of town, but I'm happy with my choice. She's terrific. I need everything spelled out for me b/c of my prior experiences with dentists. I get anxious. But somehow, the combination of spending 2.5 hours in a chair and my nerves going crazy actually helped me to fall asleep during the last 1/2 hour. you can't beat sleeping through a root canal. So let's just say, I had a very traumatic experience about three years ago during my last root canal that I have dreaded and avoided any dentist visits since then! Up until I chipped my tooth a week ago, and the filling practically was gone and ended up with a hole in my tooth (gross, I know)... So for an entire week, I was hesitant of going to the dentist even for a routine check up. When I went to my regular dentist Dr. Kim, she ruined my entire day when she uttered "I know you're not a big fan of them, but you need a root canal!" First thing that popped in to mind "OMG, NOT AGAIN!" Anyway, she recommended two endodontics one in Daly City and the other being Dr. Wong. And since I work in the city, I figured what the heck. So I called to make an appointment, no answer, so I left a message. However, no call back so I went into work. After 10 minutes of work, my tooth was giving me sooooo much trouble, I started getting migraines. So luckily the second time I called, they had an appointment at 1:30, only two hours away. Perfect! I got on the next muni and headed right over there! I arrived an hour and a half early! LOL! So I decided to grab some coffee at Starbucks which was located directly downstairs. Anyway, when I walked up at 1:25, as soon as I walked in I was greeted by some very friendly receptionist... One of them, Pam, even remembered me calling! As soon as I sat on "the chair," I was seriously sweating bullets! Ahaha! But they reassured me it would just be vibrations and pressures, that's all I should be feeling. I even got to watch a movie, instead of just staring at the ceiling which was a definite plus! I even got the option of choosing which movie I wanted to see. Anyway, after about 40 minutes the procedure was done, and I thought "WOW, that's it?" Haha! Easy peezy! Definitely changed the way I viewed root canals, LOL as long as Dr. Wong does it again if GOD forbid I should ever have one again in this lifetime that is. Nonetheless, a great experience! Oh and no pain all day today, and I just had my root canal done yesterday :) read more

Since I was having a weird reverse root canal, where he had to cut through my gum at the bottom of my tooth, I was nervous, it was surgery after all!!
