I've been coming to the zoo since I was a kid. First it was with my siblings; then as an adult with my family; and now as a retiree. Wednesday it was free admission for San Francisco residents with proof of ID. Typically it's the first Wednesday of the month. However it's wise to check the website calendar as it's not always the case. When it's free, summer day camps take advantage of it too. My favorites include visiting the koala crossing, the penguins, the giraffes, the lemurs, & the gorillas. Years ago the Lion House was very impressive with the lions especially during feeding time, and watching the elephants too. The elephants are long gone and the lion population is down. Today I saw one lion and one lioness. I tried to visit the bears but either I missed it or the path was blocked. The zoo has changed over the years. When you first walk in it's nice but as you venture further it seems blighted. Still I enjoy coming to see all the animals jumping up and down for me. read more

SF Zoo is a good place for families and has massive potential. SF Zoo is a fun and memorable place for all ages. Kids have a wonderful time here and have quality time with their parents and grandparents. It's cool to see the giraffes from the entrance & south side of the parking lot , and this is a unique feature vs other zoos. The Lemur forest, South American aviary, and penguins are highlights. The temporary Dinos Rule exhibit is amazing with 21 realistic moving dinosaurs, and way more interesting than looking at fossil skeletons in a museum. Good sized line at opening last Saturday. Location is very convenient, just 30min from the Peninsula and accessible from 280/35 with no tolls & no traffic on weekends. A great place in the summer as it's not too hot, and it's an expansive property where you can get a lot of steps in and stroll your little ones around. The Nature Trail (available on certain days of the week in the summer) is a highlight for families with lots of friendly student volunteers who enjoy talking about animals. Looking forward to seeing the much needed long-term vision that the Zoo is working on. With big capex and sponsorships to get back on the frontier, SF Zoo could be the *most innovative* in the country. I'm in shock that I completely missed the pathways that brings you up and personal with all the Giraffes and Zebras. I always see them from the entrance and only noticed people standing much much closer recently. At first I thought it was a paid tour until I noticed a hidden pathway towards the right side after entering the zoo. I absolutely enjoyed watching the Giraffes getting fed 5 feet away. We visited the insect zoo first thing again, and just like our last visit, it ended up being the highlight of the day for my 3-year-old. He was absolutely fascinated by all the different insects on display. We spent quite a while inside the exhibit as he carefully looked at everything and even took time to read some of the books available. It's such a fun and educational experience for little ones. On our way there, we were excited to finally spot the red panda, which we didn't get to see during our previous visit. After that, we wandered around the zoo and visited some of our favorite animals, including the zebras, giraffes, ostriches, and lemurs. Every visit to the San Francisco Zoo offers something different, and it's always a wonderful place for families to explore, learn, and make new memories. We'll definitely be back again! read more

San Francisco Zoo has been around for decades and is the best zoo in NorCal. It's located all the way down Sloat Blvd, close by the ocean. Just like most of outer sunset, you can expect many cold and cloudy days. They are open 10am-5pm, year round. We came recently on a cloudy and rainy day and it was not crowded at all. I don't know if it was the rain, but most of the animals were pretty active that day, which was pretty cool. Watching the giraffes eating when we first got there was pretty nice. Our favorite exhibit was the penguin exhibit on penguin island, especially because we came for the penguin feeding. It was so cute watching the penguins eating their fish, hiding in their island dome, and swimming around the island. Another favorite were the black bears because they were very active, running around their enclosure, going swimming, climbing the walls, and playing with each other. The aviaries, insect zoo, flamingos, lions, and kangaroos were nice to see also. The SF Zoo is a pretty good size so you'll need a map and you'll get plenty of steps in if you walk all of it. We had a good time, even though some areas were closed and some animals weren't home. read more

First time at SF zoo! We visited during Easter weekend so we expected it to be crowded, but it didn't feel that way inside since the grounds are VAST. Everything is pretty spread out, so we never waited long to see exhibits up close. I'm sure the cafe is a different story, but we brought a lot of snacks thanks to the recommendation of another reviewer and we skipped the cafe to get a late lunch after our visit! Parking was full when we arrived around 11:40am, but the folks who arrived upon opening at 9:30am were starting to leave! We found parking within 10 minutes even with other driver vultures lol When you walk in, you get the gift shop/restrooms/nice view of the giraffes and ostriches before you even buy/scan your ticket! The prices vary depending on if you're an SF resident, military, senior citizen or person with disabilities, but general admission is $31/adult and $22/child (ages 2-11). I personally think the prices are fair for zoo upkeep. We came on a 79 degree day, which is quite hot for the Ocean Beach area that's typically foggy. As such, I wasn't disappointed to see animals sleeping or hiding from the heat. My daughter was more interested in people watching than looking for animals, so maybe that's also why I had a great trip :P Got no complaints from her! The Rainforest exhibit is purposefully warmer to accommodate its creatures and it's one enclosed room with a lot of people, so expect to sweat lol. As with any sunny outing, bring hats/sunglasses/sunscreen! There is shade and plenty of places to rest (including a fun play area for kids with 3 playgrounds), but the sun is still the sun. Not as many places with AC to rest though. I think some research before visiting helps plan out your day better if you're aiming to see or do certain things! If we lived closer, I would be interested in the zoo camp they offer for kids kindergarten and up! read more

Opened at 10am on Sunday with a group of 9. All sorts of animals such as zebras, giraffes, ostriches, penguins, flamingos, bears (which I heard someone say "when you see black bears fight back and brown bears lay down." Haha), insects, a rain forest area, and a petting area for goats. Today was the celebration of 97 years that the zoo has been there. By the playground area they had bubbles and "decorating" cake stickers and free birthday cake dip and dot ice cream. A good 5 hours were spent at the zoo. There are a few food areas to get things like pizza, pretzels, cotton candy and drinks. A virtual reality of 12 seats were available to watch one of the 3 movie selections for $9. A train ride is available for $9 as well. And as always a gift shop towards the end of the exit. read more

Not impressed. Visited April 2nd. Saw the Invisible African Lion and the Invisible Bear Country. Saw penguins and sleeping lions. I felt like being in the jurassic Park movie, going through the park without seeing any animals. What's even more interesting is that they only had one cafeteria open. Though I would've understood why but still for the price I paid I would've expected more. Quality of service: B Quality of product: C Price: $$ Suggestion: bring your food at the park. The price for the meal is outrageous (as expected.) and I'm sure this is where they make their money. However, they could've accommodated by lowering the price in the middle of the day when there's barely any customers since a lot of the animals are not out in display and only one cafeteria is open. On the downside, my heart does ache when I see these animals like the rhinoceros or the grizzly bear, wondering back-and-forth in their cage when they could be living a full life out in the wilderness. Parking was sparse, but found one of the last spots around 10:30 am, get there early! The animals and sanctuaries were well cared for. The zoo was clean. A handful of exhibits were empty. We were bummed we didn't see elephants or hippos, but know we can't see them all every time. We'll be back soon, and hope to see more then. read more

1 star review to the snooty asian girl manning the membership office yesterday around 4:30PM when I paid to exit the parking. My 3 year old daughter says hi to her and she flatly ignored her as if she didn't hear anything. How can you ignore a child just trying to say hello to stranger when shes right infront of you? Girl, you dont deserve to sit in the front office because clearly you are not happy with your job, so quit!! My blood was literally boiling yesterday because of this unfriendly customer service wannabe. I didnt catch her name but management should be aware of who she is, i went there 7/23 and she was the one in the membership office before you exit infront of the gift shop around 4-4:30PM. Been so long since we visited to SF Zoo and it was the first time we brought our kiddo during Mother's Day weekend. Lucklily we were able to take advantage of the family day pricing ($5 per person) because to be honest, we didn't stay long with a lil who likes to nap after lunch. So we strolled around in a relaxing manner and got to see the Giraffes, Zebras, Lemurs, Monkeys, and that was good enough. Someday we will venture further up. We came On a weekday at noon and there were hardly any people. It was so nice to walk around and enjoy without a crowd (not sure if it gets too crowded on weekends). Why I love the city? As a city with more dogs than kids, the city is incredibly dog-friendly.... Where else can you bring your dog to the zoo so they can enjoy all the sights and smells? And, enjoy the "smells" Tater Tot did...THE funk was like euphoria to him. Dog Days at the SF Zoo is an event on designated dates where well-behaved dogs are allowed with advanced ticket purchase. When I visited, I had to submit a form, wait for an email letting me know that I was selected, and provided a link to purchase a ticket. The process has since changed. * Occurs twice a month, usually on Thursdays. * Advanced ticket is required and is first come, first serve (you no longer have to submit a form). * Dog ticket is $22 and one adult ticket is required per dog (general: $29, SF residents: $26) * Time slots: 10 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm. * Fifteen dogs are allowed at each timeslot. * You'll be provided with a map of areas dogs are allowed and not allowed. * Leaping Lemur Café has three food stations (Burgers, hot dog, ramen, pizza, and more). Dog-friendly outdoor seating. * Parking: $11 on weekdays. We parked on Sloat and walked over. It's free with no time limit. It took about 2 hours to walk through the entire zoo. (-) About 40%-50% of exhibits were empty (no camel, lion, orangutan, chimpanzee, bongo, wolves, leopard, gorilla, wolverine, etc). (-) The solitary animals looked SO sad esp the rhino. (-) Petting zoo was closed. (-) Little Puffer Steam Train was not running. Overall, while I'm not a fan of zoos in general, the state of the SF Zoo has become hella depressing to see as an adult. IMO, it needs a complete overhaul and renovation. But, my dog LOVED the experience - it provided unique enrichment opportunities and tons of mental stimulation. The SF Zoo has changed over the years but for the better. We made it a family day and enjoyed watching all the animals. My favorite is the lion and this is the second time I've been able to hear the lion roar. Love it. Zoo info that you can also find on the website. Plenty of parking, weekends $15. Weekend Admission price for ages 12-64, $31. The cafe has a variety of food items that are focused on country/regions which I appreciate that there's options and not just junk food. The gift store has clothing, toys and souvenirs. My suggestion is to make a day of it. Carve out 4-6hrs, depending how fast or slow your group is. Start in the morning so you can see more animals roaming about. The afternoon not so much. Animals get sleepy too. If it's a nice day, then you can venture to the beach that's about 1-2 blocks away to just enjoy the view. read more

Bye bye are the days of paying with a human being. And she was of no help... with her attitude. Ugh. My grandude did love the 7 minute virtual Whale movie. There are 4 choices to choose from. The one thing I want to mention is how deeply sad I felt for the larger animals. Silverback gorilla, bears, rhino, lions, etc. all seemed deeply sad and just sat there looking bored :( especially those like the big bird from Australia that was alone... made my heart sink. I know that a lot of animals are rescued.. but at this point.. I think they might be better off living their best life in their natural habitat. The giraffes & penguins seemed happy...but that was about it. I'm being serious. The wolves just going around on their small trail doing nothing... they need to hunt!! The play area was epic. The carousel was nice but again... bored attitude-y employee. $4 extra. bathrooms too far & in between. Nothing new there. About 3-4 exhibits had nothing. I'm so glad we went on a Wednesday... it wasn't busy at all. Parking $13... not too bad. We visited the SF Zoo on Wed., Dec. 3, during a free admission day for San Francisco residents. When we arrived, it was cloudy, but once the sun came out, I'm glad it got warmer. Unfortunately, it didn't feel much like a zoo -- there were very few animals present, and we ended up seeing more people and greenery than actual wildlife. Came here to volunteer on a Saturday morning. They have a great system with many different groups of volunteers where you do various tasks for the horticulture department such as clearing out branches, spreading mulch etc. before the zoo opens to the public. The area we were volunteering at was near some birds but the birds seemed to be plucking their feathers out. Got to see a beautiful giraffe habitat also. read more

After seeing the promotion that kids enter free with an adult ticket, I decided to give this place a try. Honestly, I regret that decision. My family and I visited on a Sunday and arrived around 10:40 AM. By then, there was already a sign saying the parking lot was full, seriously? After driving around the nearby area multiple times, we were lucky to find street parking. Because we parked outside, we had to walk a long distance, which was especially difficult with kids. At the entrance, there was a long line to purchase tickets. I strongly recommend buying tickets in advance to avoid wasting time standing in line. The zoo itself is quite small and took us about two hours to walk through at a slow pace. They also offer a train ride, but it costs an additional $10 per person, which feels overpriced for a short 10 minute ride. Overall, I wouldn't visit again. In my opinion, the Oakland Zoo is far better in many ways. read more

I have fond memories of the zoo as a child (hello school field trips). I appreciate how they have SF Zoo dog days! You sign up for the chance to take your pup to the zoo on select days and are randomly selected to attend at an allocated time. Dogs go in for free but humans still need to pay for admission on these days. For non-SF residents, general admission is $29/person and parking is $11 during the week ($13 on weekends). We came mid-week and the zoo was very empty. Some of the enclosures were shut down for maintenance. I'm pretty sure there used to be polar bears and tigers, but I didn't see any on a recent trip. It's also seems a little lonely since many exhibits only have one animal. We spent about 2 hours at the zoo, and it was nice to revisit memories, but not something I feel like I need to do on a regular basis. p read more

Of the zoos in existence, this is one of them. We had a nice walk and saw plenty of people. It seemed as though half of the animal exhibits were closed. My kids said "the zoo was better than doing homework". To be fair, it doesn't cost too much to get in compared to many other family activities, so that was a plus. Edited to add: While I didn't catch her name, there was an amazing volunteer in the koala exhibit who was knowledgeable, kind, and excited to share information about koalas. For about $100, we scored a great day enjoying many different animal exhibits and were able to spend several hours enjoying some outdoor time and everything the zoo has to offer. While this may not be the best zoo in the world, I think it has a lot to offer for young children or those who aren't frequent zoo goers. You can bring food and water inside the zoo, which was a win to avoid sub-par zoo food. The parking does cost $11 on weekdays, but there is plenty of it and it seemed safe. We loved the animal exhibits and I felt like the access to the animals was great, offering unique views. The insect zoo was super cool for our toddler boys and they have many interactive options like the playground, the train ride, and the petting zoo. The kids had a lovely time at the zoo and even though the animals were limited you can see them up close and the place is wide open as well. We did not do the animal feeding but maybe next time. A really great zoo overall, great variety of animals, beautiful grounds, and large environments for the animals. It took us about 2.5 hours to see each exhibit, we went on a Tuesday around lunch time and it was pretty quiet inside the zoo. Most of the animals were out and about too so that was nice! WHEN IT'S BUSY: Weekends and holidays get packed in the afternoon. We arrived at opening and it was calm, but by noon the entry line was nearly down to Sloat Blvd. TICKET PRO TIP: Buy tickets online. If you have digital tickets, skip the ticket booth and go straight to the main entrance gate to scan in. *For the days kids are free, you can still purchase those tickets online. PARKING PRO TIP: To save $13-15, park on Sloat Blvd or nearby neighborhoods (expect this when it's busy). The largest lot is at Sloat & Skyline but it's about a 0.6-mile walk. So arrive early for the best spots. If you're parking in the zoo lot and already have tickets, you can pay for parking inside the zoo to avoid booth lines at the Train station, Carousel, and Gift shop. Pay for parking at the ticket booth only if you need to buy tickets. As far as the zoo itself and the animals, it's mainly flat and everything is spread out in my opinion. They have lions, bears, penguins, giraffe, zebras, rhinos, wolverine, flamingo, red panda, wolves, sloth, Komodo dragon and many others. Not sure why people complain about not seeing animals meant for warmer climates. SF Zoo is literally next to the beach. My daughter loves the train. $7 during the week and $9 on weekends/holidays i think? Last about 10 minutes so in my opinion it's worth it. You go around the track twice. I can't speak to the food because I've never had the food there but I can say that it smells good. Nonetheless, we always have a good time. A good way to end our day is letting our daughter play at the park which is pretty big. She could spend all day there if we let her. read more

Always thought the SF Zoo was always beautiful, but this time around, just seemed like there were not many animals. It was a risk of a rainy day, so we appreciated the smaller crowds, but again, seemed like not many animals. Our favorites were the zebras, the rhino who loved all the attention and gave us a show, the penguins who were having a pool party, red panda that is just so cool. No big cats in sight other than the snow leopard, bears clearly due to sleepy season. The staff all-around on the premises and cafes were friendly. Great snack options at the Lemur Cafe. I have not been to the SF zoo for over 15 years and decided it's time for a visit. I came around 3pm on Wednesday. Parking is available for $11 and street parking is available too, with an extra 5-10 min walk. At the entrance, after the gift shop you can see the zebras, giraffes and emus on the right even without a ticket. A lot can change over 15 years and I was glad to see that the Penguin island is still there. Always fun watching them waddle around and swimming in the water. The highlight for me was seeing the red panda. It had beautiful red fur and I managed to get some great shots because it was so active. The kids play area has changed into snow caves and woody areas. I really like the sculpture learning area where small creatures were built on a larger scale and large print was there to read about the creatures. However, I also noticed there were a lot less animals from before. Notably missing, were the elephants, the hippos and rhinos, flamingoes, the lion house (closed), koala bear, owls, roaming peacocks, bird of preys and the kangaroos from the walkabout enclosure. The farm has changed too. Where are the ducks from the flowing water outside and the chickens? Where you can see the eggs incubate and if you're lucky you might see them hatching. The anaconda was also missing from the reptile house and was always a hi-light to see such a large snake. Many of the paths were closed off too and the train was inactive. The insect zoo had less exhibits from before and what happened to the spider web climbing structure outside which was so fun for the kids. I also recall the noisy caged monkeys but this time the cages seemed empty. I did see a lot of spooky decorations up, as they get ready for the Halloween zoo event. I wanted so much to love the zoo but couldn't help comparing it to how it was from years ago. It was pretty quiet because the crowds are missing. Maybe it was nearer the end of the day. The zoo really needs an upgrade as not much has changed since I was last here. Overall, it was great seeing the animals again but hoping the arrival of the Pandas next year will draw in more visitors to create a more vibrant atmosphere. read more

This was the most lively zoo I've ever gone to. We went early in the morning so maybe this is when the animals were just waking up and it wasn't too hot for them. Even the lions gave us a roar! The zoo was pretty clean and had good paths for strollers. The petting zoo was not open on time so we will have to come back to check that out and the gondola was not operating. The pretzel and churro at the snack station was actually very good. I've been told the food at the top of the hill is the best though. The family ticket seems like it is well worth the investment and doesn't take too many trips to off set the cost. The staff was very generous to the little birthday boy in the group and had animal cards, buttons, and a free merry-go-round ticket. There were some staff walking around telling us about the animals too which was a nice addition. read more
