    Lots of animals

Tilden Park is a vast park with many different places within. My son has now lived in Berkley for just over a year and has managed to find all the good places to bring his kids for some down time. From his home it's a short drive up to the foothills of Tilden Regional Park. It'a only about 3 miles from UC Berkeley which is just five minutes from his home. After a few minute's drive and a quick park in the lot, we walked over to the the "Little Farm." It was just that, a small farm which was perfect for the children to come to and see [up close] many different animals. Cows, chickens, goats and some pigs were there and our grandchildren just loved getting up close and personal with them. Our youngest grandchild was especially glad to be watching [and speaking with] some of the animals. The farm is a great size to allow them to move around and not get lost in the maze of people. The indoor portion was also wonderful for the children to walk around, and see things close up. The farm and surrounding park has all kinds of led-activities, This was the perfect place to be for a couple of hours and just enjoy nature. KUDOs to the team at Tilden Regional Park Little Farm.

Free??? LIVE ANIMALS??? With parking??? And public parks for BBQ and picnics??? What more can you ask for. This place is like a little gem. I call this a mini Golden Gate Park. Adorable place. I got to brush a friggin goat. FOR FREE. Kids also get to feed cows. I wish I was them.

I'm devastated that as of spring/summer 2025 you can no longer feed the animals and per the very kind employee I talked with there is no plan to allow self feeding. What a HUGE loss to the community and to young kids curiosities . They stopped allowing this due to the avian flu which during an outbreak is very reasonable but unfortunately have not restarted their previous beloved tradition. There has to be a way to keep the animals safe (as they have been for many years with no cases of avian flu & allow children to feed and interact with such beautiful animals). Again a huge loss to our community. Hopefully they will reconsider this in the future. Until then the farm has lost its unique heartwarming charm

To give the city a break from our hectic pace ;-), we took winding roads to the NNW into the foothills of Tilden Regional Park, about 3 miles from UC Berkeley. The drive itself is peaceful and decompressing. Our target with the kids was the Tilden Little Farm. All your favorite "Old McDonald" farm animals for feeding and sometimes petting in all their furry/feathery/smelly glory: heritage cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, chickens, maybe more (Oct 2025). A garden, too. The farm and surrounding park has all kinds of led-activities, mostly for kids but also some for all-ages including hikes and cave tours.

Came Easter Sunday April 20th 2024. NO feeding animals anymore! Spoke with someone that worked there and they recently decided to do this due to the rise in avian flu. They also found that the animals are a little healthier when people don't feed them. They don't have any date planned to allow people to feed the animals any more. They suggest to check in with the visitor center next door for events where you could get up and close with the animals.

    Lawn area. Perfect for picnics

Lots of tiny adorable goats right now. My son and i loved this farm! There are signs throughout to avoid touching and feeding the farm animals at the moment. I had snacks in my car and we stayed in the shade for a while. Very nice area to relax.

Little Farm is another Tilden classic, of which is fun to enjoy regardless of age and how many times visited. Parking can be a little challenging, especially on weekends, but the surrounding parkland offers nice to-and-from opportunities. I've been coming here for years with kids of various ages, and this place never gets old. I grew up in Iowa, so I've always been somewhat suspicious of "petting zoos", yet Little Farm has always touched most of the animal bases that I normally expect. Plus it's fun watching the wonder in a young person's eyes as they interact with these wonderful farm animals. Gayle and I were here during a recent weekday with our 5 year-old granddaughter and thoroughly enjoyed the walk (especially the uphill part of the pasture), the Farm, watching the other kids, and getting a chance to do a little feeding.

Great for kids, make sure to wear tennis shoes because there is a dirt path uphill to see all of the animals. They have chickens, ducks, rabbits, goats, sheep, and cows. There was a sign for butterflies but we did not see those. People were kind and shared some of their lettuce and celery with our group since we came unprepared. Overall o think great for kids - we spend maybe 45 mins here and that was us taking our time. Parking is not the best, but we got lucky with close parking. Pro tip: bring your own carrots, lettuce, or celery to feed the animals.

We were disappointed to find out after driving 1.5 hours to the farm that weren't allowed to feed or touch the animals due to the bird flu. There were signs posted everywhere but nowhere did that say it on their Facebook page or anywhere else before hand. Bummer but still fun to watch the animals and the park is gorgeous.

It's All Part of my Farm Cute farm that's part of Tilden Regional Park and located not too far from the Visitor's Center. *Free *Kid-friendly *At the time of our visit (±2yrs) they provided food so you can feed the animals, but it seems like now you have to bring your own? Lettuce or celery, only. TLDR: Great family-friendly fun, esp if you have young 'uns. #ThrowbackThursdayReview

Tilden Regional Park Little Farm Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Tilden Regional Park Little Farm

Are you allowed to feed the animals now? People mentioned there were signs not to feed them due to the bird flu.

    No feeding any animals.

Are they open on Mondays right now?

The farm is usually open 7 days a week but the Nature Center (which is a museum/visitor center) is closed on Mondays. You can still visit the farm animals though.

    Are they open?

Yes! No more reservations required -the nearby nature center is also open but has certain days they are not open-the farm is usually open 7 days a week.

    Are they open or not?

    Nope

We drove there today on Sunday 6/28 it is not open the parking lot is close and the farm is close just giving everybody an update?

Yep their website says the farm along with the train and carousel etc are closed for now.

What does it cost to get in?

It's free! At least it was when I went in August 2019. Bring veggies for the animals, there is none available to purchase.

Is it a sanctuary? Or are animals headed to slaughterhouses later on?

I had the same question so I called them and they said most animals live out their lives there with the exception of the piglets. They get sent to a pig farmer eventually for slaughter. So horrible I was hoping I could take my son here but there's… Read more

Are there picnic tables or places you could set up food?

    Yes!

    Is this place stroller friendly?

Mostly! Some of the trails higher up where the goats are might be a bit tricky. Everything is pretty accessible.

    Are dogs allowed?

    No, dogs aren't allowed.

One is a flat area with a play scape and a cement slide. There's actually a tunnel nearby that goes under the road and crosses over to the rose garden, which is really cool. The cement slide is a must see for anyone with kids and even if you're an adventurous adult. There are plenty of cardboard boxes around for you to try it out. When I first heard about the cement slide, I didn't think it would be very fun, (cement and sliding didn't go together in my mind) but it is great! Then just a little bit south, above that play scape area, there's a baseball field. So many different people come here to meet. Some people for picnics, some people play soccer, some people play softball, some people bring their dogs. And then inside the woods behind the park, there are a picnic benches. I have a friend who had her wedding reception there. You can reserve them with the city. And then behind the picnic area, there's a hike and if you're very adventurous, there is a waterfall hidden, but it's not easy to find if you don't know about it. I highly recommend this park. During the winter, the baseball field is blocked off with Fence to protect the grass but other parts of the park are accessible.
