Rude. The soonest appointment I could get for a sick dog was three weeks out. Apparently on Saturday afternoon before the Monday morning appointment, they texted me asking to contact them "if I was UNABLE to make the appointment." I was out of state and out of service. I get the text when I get back into cell service. I had full intentions to make the appointment as I had a sick dog and needed it, hence why I made an appointment in the first place. So I showed up after taking time off from work and rearranging schedules to find out they canceled on me. They never said I have to confirm or they would cancel. They never stated a policy saying I had to do a check in at any particular time. They literally just canceled me. Didn't even text to tell me they would cancel. What the h@ll kind of business does that? Not a business I plan to return to. And now I still have a sick dog. Terrible customer service, and no concern for animals. When I expressed my displeasure at the desk, the person was rude, saying well "that's our policy" and then in the most wonderfully condescending tone said "have a nice day." Veterinary services cost a lot of money. It takes a lot of time waiting to get an appointment. People are trying to get help for their sick furry family members. These people seem to have no empathy. No thanks. I'll find business elsewhere. read more

Until our last visit to San Juan Veterinary Clinic, I would have given them a Five Star Rating. All the doctors are good and have provided good care to our 3 dogs. We mostly dealt with Dr. Greene and he is excellent. The staff is always friendly and helpful, but a traumatic incident occurred near the end of 2024. Our little 15 year old 16 pound guy suddenly went into convulsions and was yelping uncontrollably at the top of his capacity. I instantly called a 24 hour emergency number in Telluride but they would not help us. I called San Juan Veterinary Clinic in Montrose (an hour and a half away from us. I called at 5:29pm that Wednesday, October 16, 2024 -- time stamp on the phone). We have taken all 3 of our dogs to SJV Clinic many times in spite of the distance. A staff member, Christi, answered the phone and could hear little Beau yelping and screaming in pain. I had to go to the other end of the house so we could hear each other over the phone because Beau was yelping so loudly. Christi yelled at me, "I don't have a doctor and it is 5:30! I'm going home!" And she hung up on me. I was shocked at her callousness in the face of such pain. At last, I got help from a vet that we had never been to and we were able to drug Beau and take him to Grand Junction Emergency Hospital two and a half hours away from our home. A traumatic trip under those circumstances. You can tell everything you need to know about a person by the way he or she treats animals and children. Not just their own if they have any but all animals and children. It is our opinion that as nice as Christi seems to be, she suffers from extreme moral depravity. And a hospital that still employs someone who has done that should probably examine why they are in the business of helping suffering and sick animals but only between 9 to 5. If a doctor did that for humans, he or she would lose their license. For me, it should be the same for doctors who provide health care for animals. Dr. Franklin, the owner of the hospital, did call us later and we had a long conversation. He explained how hard he has tried to get emergency care for animals in Montrose but has failed to do so. Our opinion is that he has not tried hard enough, but he has given up. If you take your animals to SJVC, know they will probably get good treatment. As long as it is in regular business hours. 9 to 5. And make sure to steer clear of one staff member in particular. read more

I wish I could give these guys 10 stars!!! Today my family and I were in the area on top of Imogene Pass. My sweet little Border Collie was attacked by a large dog while he was drinking water. We hurried off the mountain into Ouray. We started frantically calling Vet Clinics in the area. It was 4:30p.m when we called San Juan Veterinary Clinic. The lady that answered the phone was so kind and told us we could come in. Upon walking through the doors we were greeted by two women at the front desk, and three women who were dressed like nurses. My puppy was in a lot of stress and crying loudly. I wasn't sure if he could walk because he was crying and not wanting to move. They already had a gurney ready, they were very gentle with him, and they took him back immediately. Dr. VanDerwalker came out and spoke to me immediately. He thoroughly explained to me what I could expect. His love for animals is obvious. He really took his time with us. We felt cared for the entire time. This Veterinary Clinic is so clean, and I am more than grateful to have found this Gem in such short notice. My dog tonight is relaxed and already showing signs of his playful, and happy spirit. Lastly, their prices are fair. They're not outrageous and are defiantly less than my vet in Golden CO. I am shocked by how reasonable the cost was. I was expecting a much larger bill. We had an emergency and they were able to get us right in and take care of our dog. This was on a Friday and they told us a doctor would available on Saturday if needed. Saturday morning my dogs eye looked pretty bad so I called and they asked me to text a picture. They reassured me that the eye was healing. We went back in on Monday to have it looked at again. Dr. Green checked our dog and again reassured us that the eye was doing well. Everyone was so kind and we appreciate the care that we received. read more

I have a male 8lb Maltese that needed heart worm medicine and kennel cough med because it was time for his meds. We are traveling for several months in our RV. I called and we were able to get in the same day. The minute we walked in the 2 women behind the counter greeted us with the biggest smiles and even offered me water or a few other types of beverages. I wish I could give them 10 Stars! Dr. Franklin gave me excellent advice and told me if I wanted him to come in after hours he would, but it wasn't necessary based on the symptoms and time elapsed. He suggested to follow up in the morning. Right before the office opened his staff called to get me in that day. Upon examination he found that my cat had a tumor, but she was going to be OK. I was concerned about poisoning, but based on the bloodwork she had not ingested as much as I thought. He seems to be conservative with his treatment, and I really appreciate that. He has a great attitude, and everyone at the front was very nice. I am happy to have found a great vet and feel very confident with his treatment. I have a checkup for my girl scheduled in a month. read more

Had my dog suffer a complication with his spine and thought he wasn't going to be able to walk again but the staff did their magic and got him up and running like new again. We were on vacation and brought our 20 month old pup Jax in because he had not eaten in a week and was drinking very little water. I chose this clinic because of the outstanding yelp reviews and I am pleased to say that we had the same 5 star service most of the other reviewers had. We walked in without an appt and were greeted pleasantly by the ladies at the front desk , within 10 minutes we were in an exam room with Maggie and in another 10 minutes Dr Franklin was examining Jax and recommending treatment. We felt the price for the visit , blood work, X-rays, and meds was very fair and they even sent us home with some dog food to get us through the next 4-5 days. We were on vacation from Arizona and our Pooch Emily became ill with bloody diarrhea and vomiting. We were leaving Ouray Colorado the next day. Dr Franklin saw her and gave us the option of hospitalization for the day or treating ourselves at home. He felt she would get better either way. Due to our schedule and wanting our girl ready for our next adventure. We opted for hospital treatment. They informed us of her progress during the day and we picked her up around 5. Never miss an opportunity to charge someone more $$$. Our 16 yr old lab Bree was dying. We needed to end her misery. I called, scheduled the appointment, and asked the fee ($90), and declined their $65 cremation charge (we have a grave spot on our farm). That afternoon, my wife and I took our dog to the clinic. Staff was great, and we were told they needed to take Bree to a back room to install a catheter and give her a mild sedative. Little did we know that was an "optional" process. Once everything was finished, and we had Bree back in our car, I was presented an invoice for $150. That is when I was informed that we had "selected" some optional services. I was stunned and grieving the loss of our dog. I paid the bill and left. But I will never return, and don't recommend their practice. read more

We were staying in Montrose for two weeks while we visited the mountains to 4x4. Our male Schnauzer had a raw back paw that we could never figure out what was causing his licking it. We were able to get him in the afternoon we called to be seen. The lady on the phone was very nice! The vets assistant was good with him, and the vet was great. We didn't have to wait around long to get seen, which is so appreciated! We were able to take our dog home with salve and meds. With in a day it looked better, and 3 days it's healing nicely! Brought cat in with a history of kidney problems. First vet sent her home and said change her diet. Next day, blood work confirmed renal failure. They give an estimate of $600 for 24 hours of care, then boost it by 20% when I pick the cat up and debate for 20 minutes trying to justify over $700 for keeping the cat overnight and administering a bag of IV fluid. Shameful. Greedy. And dishonest. Actually said that when the vet called in the morning for an update, as he said he would, claimed that I approved the additional charges, which I did not. I specifically reminded the doctor of the estimate and that I expected to be charged that amount and no more. Office manager compared their office to a dishonest car mechanic charging more than an original estimate. The office manager actually said, "this is no different than when you pay more for your car than the original estimate". Sent the cat home with minimal improvement and unwilling to give a straight answer about the cost to continue treatment for an additional 24 hours, which might have saved her life. Not expecting charity here, just expected to be treated fairly and not misled, guilt tripped and gouged. UPDATE: I did not post that review from last year. But the cat went into decline again this month, as they said she would. I contacted San Juan Vet Clinic and asked if they would renew the prescription for antibiotics. NO was the answer. We need to do an exam. And we are fully booked today, but we can squeeze you in on an EMERGENCY VISIT, for an extra fee. Extortion plain and simple. read more

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST!!!! I thought my Ferret had insulinoma. I was wrong after a blood test proved otherwise. Justin Green, DVM and his assistant "sorry can't remember Her name since I was kinda out of it". Justin was more than willing and made it possible for Aria the ferret to have an exploratory surgery. I was hoping for the best but expecting the worse. Aria can not have her tumor removed so just going to try and provide her with comfort as long as possible. I know they do not specialize in Ferrets, but would never hesitate to bring them an animal that is not in there everyday wheelhouse. They gave it the best shot possible and I am more than just a little GRATEFULL!!! read more

My dog Barkley was attacked by two pit bulls. Barkley had never been to San Juan Vet Clinic, but our little beagle Zoey had. I called at 1145 a.m. and told them what happened. They told me to come right in. Barkley had to have 3.5 hours of emergency surgery, with two of the three vets working on him. They saved his life! All of the veterinarians there are superb, but Dr. Justin is the best. We cannot thank San Juan Veterinary Clinic enough for giving us back our cherished beagle boy, Barkley. read more
