BUT...it's like Fort Knox due to the fact that the owners will not allow ANYONE but those that are on their approved inhabitants list (no more than 10 and I don't just mean overnight quests - which I would understand). No family members, friends or folks that you may meet on the Island during your stay are allowed to step ONE TOE on their property lest you will have the sheriff physically escort your guests AND yourself off their property at any time without refund (which is in their cheery follow-up email that you receive a few days before your arrival). And they make sure of this by having camera's at the door to monitor your comings and goings and also conveniently park their RV just over the fence to keep you on the up and up. You may say that maybe they've had bad experiences but heck...charge a hefty deposit if that's the case. We asked permission to simply have my brother and his family come for dinner one night and we were promptly denied. So again, it's a great place but if you don't want to be kicked out if you happen to want to have friends or family over for even one evening meal...forget it.

I came here with my boyfriend for a little anniversary getaway and we stayed at the Goldfinch room. Yes, all the rooms are named after different birds. The place is quite cozy. At night, there were free beverages and snacks we could take and there also was a tv with a streaming service to end your night with. In the morning, we woke for the breakfast and were served by Amanda who takes deep care of the bed and breakfast. She also has her own little pottery studio next door. She made us some eggs, bacon, pancakes, served with muffins and we got to choose our drink. It felt very cozy to wake up to this. Food is pretty standard when it comes to breakfast, but I liked that it was made upon arrival into the space. After breakfast, we hopped onto the hot tub, it wasn't too hot but more like warm. This could be due to it being freezing cold outside. The lookout was absolutely gorgeous though, very serene I might add. I would consider staying at Otters Pond again if I were to come back to the area, maybe in a different season?

Location cannot be beat. It is literally steps from the harbor, and you can step right off of your boat, the ferry or the seaplane. Check-in and quick and easy. I stayed in Sweet 1 which is the 1st room up the stairs. So convenient to going everywhere. Room is super spacious and everything was comfortable. Nice touch with the welcome fruit bowl. Bath was also spacious and toiletries were well-stocked and great quality (all Malin+Goetz!). Super close to restaurants, bars, and the town, where parking is difficult (so being able to walk was a big perk!). Only negatives (and they were very minor) were the missing water and coffeemaker in the room, and the difficulty in understanding the instructions for the shower head.

After greeting us warmly at the door, Mrs. Bronson sat us down in the parlor for tea and a chat about our plans for the trip. She also listed off a mind-boggling number of options for our two breakfasts; we settled on applecakes with cinnamon and waffles with real cherries jubilee, if you can believe it. The food was delicious, served in formal courses on beautiful china and crystal. The house itself is a literal treasure trove, spilling over with the Bronsons' international collections of books, knickknacks, furniture and sundries. The overall effect is somewhere between a Studio Ghibli film and the set of "Practical Magic". It's very understandable that they can't host small children! For older guests, though, it's difficult to pry yourself out of the building to see the other sights on the island. We enjoyed viewing antique photographs on a Victorian-era stereoscope and listening to a music box with swappable punched-metal discs, and spent a pleasant evening sipping port and playing chess in the upstairs parlor, feeling very posh. Between the delightful host and hostess, the wonderful food, and the completely unique furnishings, our time at the Compass Rose was unforgettable. We'll definitely be staying here again.

What's not to like?…read more Within minutes of arriving you can't help but feel the weight of those two Delta connectors, the three hour layover in Salt Lake City, and the two hours of downtown Seattle traffic slide right off your shoulders. Alice Bay is only a couple hours from Seatac but feels like you could be in Alaska. Set in the gorgeous but humble Skagit Valley, it is blessed with serene Bay views, visits from herons, rocky beaches and solitude. Plenty of solitude. The proprietors are salt of the earth and appear only as much is necessary - or as much as you'd like. The digs are simple but spacious. But private is pretty much the m.o. here. With only one guest quarters (with two queens), it's just right for a couple or small family. I'll keep the rest for (your) discovery and not spoil it. It's a nice place, completely affordable, and is the perfect location to get away and get some seaweed stuck in your toes...

The bedroom loft makes for a challenging bathroom run in the middle of the night - not for the clumsy or the big and tall...low loft ceiling and a steep set of steps up and down, but there is alternative access on the outside from the upstairs deck. It's fully furnished with a stove, refrigerator and microwave, TV, WiFi, jacuzzi, and a charcoal grill. We didn't touch the TV so I can't report cable or reception. Frogs barked all night, owls hooted in the trees... it was right up our alley; we enjoyed it thoroughly. Quite rustic with just enough amenities to maintain contact with inquiring mothers and to make hot meals and take hot showers. About 15-20 minutes from Friday Harbor, the ferry and grocery store.
