Thank you fellow Yelpers!!! I wanted to stay in the Union Square area and when looking on line there are so many hotels. I didn't need a 4 or 5 star hotel just somewhere clean comfortable and nice enough. Mayflower Hotel was awesome, comfortable and quite perfect. First off easy to find on Bush St. Check in easy, and nice lobby decor with comfy appearing sofas and chairs. Next there are two elevators but probably only one working but was adequate since I never had to wait long during the two nights I was here and it worked fairly flawlessly. My room was spotless. Incredibly clean and perfect mirrors. Beautifully decorated room and bed linens and cover. I need to do some work so the small circular table fit the bill although there were not a lot of outlets so you might need an extension cord. Small refrigerator and microwave which were perfect for keeping leftovers and heating them up. No convenient coffee in the room but plenty of coffee options nearby. In fact there is also a market right next door which has great sandwich options I learned (but didn't try). It was quiet for being in the city, yeah you can still hear sirens and some street noise but comes with the territory of staying in the city. Anyway, it was a very positive experience and I will look again for this hotel in the future. read more

Interesting hotel. It wears its 1929 origins in its sleeve, and I felt like Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe wandering around in it. I got a room on a lower floor to avoid the elevator. There was a walkin closet the size of another hotel room in my room, which was unique. But it was clean and the staff were very friendly. read more

My husband and I spent three nights here. The hotel is conveniently located, quaint, clean, and safe, but very dated. None of the furniture matched in our room, and the toilet was very low to the floor, and the shower spicket is great for a person who is 5 feet and 5 inches! I am 5',7" and had to bend to rinse my hair. The lobby houses a plethora of plants in their last life! In the morning, we enjoyed their complimentary breakfast, but it lacked yogurt. They had fresh bananas, apples, and hard-boiled eggs, but other than that, it was all starch-waffles and bread to toast. However, there is a market right next door. The room above us was not carpeted, so we could hear every footstep of the occupant, which wasn't so great in the middle of the night. But for $95 a night, you cannot beat it, especially if you are on a budget. The people at the front desk were very kind. read more

The hotel was exceptionally clean. The front desk clerk was very nice and knowledgeable. But the room itself eas a no.the whole building was very run down and it wasn't secure at all. I was traveling alone and there was no way I was going to stay in there by myself. The door only had one lock and the window was stuck open. It had a weird creepy haunted house vibe to it. I could not picture myself being able to fall asleep in that building. If you like that sort of thing that old old creep Factor then you'll love staying here. I was dreading staying there and was only going to stay one night but then my family called and I had to leave for a family emergency, I never thought that I would like a family emergency that much to get out of this hotel. You have to manage the elevetor doors. You get what you need to stay economically in an expensive town. The staff has been with the hotel for years. Love, love, love the look of this building and the combination of old and new (example: hotel keycard for an older type room). The staff were super friendly, accommodating, understanding and helped with whatever we needed. The elevators are one of the best parts, it is so cool watching it close and see the doors of the different floors pass in front of you. They have a little seating area on the top (Floor 1) that comes equipped with a couple of desks, chairs, sofas and computers. Overall, a great choice and still pretty cheap, given the area. I only wish that the heater in the room heated a *bit* better since it's been so cold. I booked on Booking.com and got a great deal as well! 9/10 read more

The worst hotel experience I've had. I wanted to cancel the reservation as soon as we checked in but my husband made the reservations so I didn't want to make him feel bad. First off it smelled like the goodwill in our room. There is no AC but you can't keep the windows open because the outside noise is insane which you can still hear even with the windows closed. There is constant honking, yelling and ambulances since there is a hospital nearby. And that would be ok but to add the neighbors noise on top of it. You can hear the people next door even when they walk because the floor is soo creaky! You can literally hear them talking as well. I had to call reception because they were non stop all night and it was past midnight and we were exhausted. I wanted the receptionist to ask them to please keep it down. The receptionist wanted me to leave my room and conduct an investigation to make sure it what room number it was even though I explained to him where the noise was coming from. He was acting as if he didn't know his hotel at all. No costumer service. He was absolutely no help. He was no help in any aspect. We needed to borrow a crib and he didn't even know if they had any, then when he finally found one it was straight up from the 1920s. He called my husband down to go get it, like I said no help at all. Moral of the story if you want to have a peaceful nights rest after long days of being a tourist, this is not the place. read more

Two complaints: 1) My room smelled very musty, and the comforter smelled like body odor. 2) I live in a city so I'm used to sleeping with a decent amount of street noise, but the noise on Bush St was extra loud. It sounded like my window was open, and I was regularly awakened by garbage trucks at 5:30am. You might have a better experience if your room doesn't face the street. read more

There is no better place to stay in San Francisco with easy access to everything for the price. My wife did quite a bit of research a month or two before we traveled to SF. We didn't want to spend $250+ per night. The reviews for this place were consistent and very good. We rode the Bart from the Oakland airport to Union Square and opted to walk the several blocks to the Hotel. We were immediately greeted by the lady at the desk. We had read previous reviews which stated that they would hold our suitcases until check-in and were pleasantly surprised to find out our room was ready, prior to noon! We paid and she showed us how to use the vintage elevators to our room on the sixth floor. The Elevators are very cool and efficient. We walked down the hall and found our room and we were pleasantly surprised to find out that it had a small kitchenette equipped with a small sink, microwave, and refrigerator. The bathroom is small but adequate, and there are even walk in closet areas that are perfect for storing luggage. they even have hangers and assorted hooks for hanging clothes and it allows you to keep luggage out of the way of the main area. The room is clean and comfortable and features night stands, chairs, TV a queen bed and a really nice view of the city. After we got settled we went back downstairs and the lady at the front desk gave us some very helpful information about a weekend protest at Crissy field. She suggested we look at that area of the city on Friday prior to the activity. She provided us with two maps and some helpful suggestions. This is a great place to stay when visiting San Francisco. read more

Moderately priced lodging near Union Square is hard to find but Mayflower fits the bill. Nice folks, clean rooms and a welcoming, homey vibe makes Mayflower a great choice. I am all about the most bang for your buck and at just over $100/night in Nob Hill, this exceeded all expectations. I stayed here with a friend and found it odd that the rates were $10 or $20 cheaper for two full beds as opposed to one queen bed. At any rate, we did not want to share a bed, so this worked out perfectly. I did some research before booking this hotel and finding a hotel in this area with free parking is harder than finding a needle in a haystack. This was the tie breaker. But free parking doesn't compensate for everything. With my prior experiences with boutique/value hotels, it can be hit or miss, but this hit on all fronts. Pros: Free Parking (The garage is a tight squeeze, so make sure you drive a compact car.) Free Wifi Free Breakfast (Not a wide variety of foods but it's free.) Great location Refrigerator and Microwave Very comfortable beds Bathroom was extremely clean. Old school elevator brings charm to the overall experience. Con, singular: ESPN was not working. The hotel staff was extremely friendly and had a plethora of tourist brochures for us to take. I only took the map which ended up being pretty useful throughout the trip. Hotel Mayflower, thank you for existing and for being reasonably priced for us poor travelers! My husband and I booked two nights at the Hotel Mayflower after Yelping an affordable place to stay and stumbling across this little gem. I was pleasantly surprised at all the positive reviews and didn't hesitate long before I called and booked. They do not accept credit cards or any other payment over the phone - they just take your name and phone number and wait for you to arrive. Kind of old school but I liked it. We drove our 1992 Toyota Camry and were warned about the parking situation; many drivers are unable to make it down the scarily narrow ramp into the underground parking without knocking off (or at least significantly scraping) their side mirrors. Initially when we checked in we were told, "sorry, there isn't any parking available, they're all full." I explained that I had told whomever I booked our rooms with that we were driving up and we had expected a spot. The man at the front desk checked out notes and changed his mind, "oh yes, it does appear you mentioned that. Sorry. We have a spot for you." Hooray! Mr. Desk Man didn't think we'd make it down because our mirrors don't fold in, but my husband is (thankfully) a very confident driver in tight situations - unlike myself - and he made it down without a bump or a scratch. Mr. Desk Man was impressed. Our room was verrryyyy... interesting. Pretty much the only reason I'm knocking off a couple stars. There was a funny, unfinished looking painting of a pumpkin patch on the wall. The floor was disturbingly damp on my side of the bed. The bed itself had a chipped, cream colored wrought iron frame, creaky and with questionable smelling sheets. The bathroom and especially the shower were teeny tiny with a small window that looked into a brick-walled alley which I particularly liked. The wifi in our room didn't connect because the signal was so weak. We were at the far end of the building so maybe that's why. The vintage-looking accordian style door on the elevator was a cool touch, but the sign restricting it to only 4 passengers made me extremely nervous when two heavyset people stepped on with massive luggage. Eeek! Overall a nice stay, and we would probably be back again. read more

Nice hotel. We lived there for about 10 days and loved it. The rates were affordable and along with complimentary breakfast, it's a good deal. Rooms: Rooms were clean - something which is absolutely required. There was a daily cleaning available which is nice. They have this microwave and a small kitchenette with basic utensils available which works well in case you want to cook something quick. We had a two double bedroom which made it a bit congested along with all the furniture. Each room has a name and a theme which is great to see. Location: Conveniently located in the heart of the city, it has some amazing restaurants like Tadu's Ethiopian, L'Ottavo and Jasmine Cafe within walking distance. In addition, there is a supermarket right next to the hotel and two more within one block range. Important places like Financial district and Embarcadero are few miles away. Great location overall. Breakfast: Good assortment in breakfast. Although the options are somewhat limited and get repetitive, it's a decent breakfast to start with. Oats, corn flakes, eggs, bread, cakes & cookies, juice, coffee, milk etc were good. Staff: The staff was really good. Very helpful and knowledgeable about the city. Overall, great experience. Would definitely book this one if I am around in the city again. read more

This an older hotel with creaky floors and old school decor. When i opened the door to my room, there was that old smell like when you went into Grandma's house when you were a kid. That said, I had a great stay. The price was right and the staff was very accommodating. They have a garage under the hotel and there is no charge to park (that was a pleasant surprise. But be warned, if you drive anything bigger than a sport sedan, chances are you won't fit through the narrow passageway. A truck or SUV doesn't have a chance but there is a garage about two block away on Leavenworth. Breakfast is nothing to scream about, but muffins, scones, juice and coffee all at no extra charge works for me. I would stay here again. Cheers! read more

Why 4 stars? Because I needed a cheap room in a decent location, and the Mayflower delivered. --- --- --- I needed a hotel for a couple of nights in San Francisco. I put in a call to Mayflower and was painlessly reserved. I spent the first few nights of my week at the W Hotel for a work event. I'll admit, going from the W to the Mayflower was a bit of a culture shock. But all in all, I really don't have any complaints. I checked in at about 10:30am and my room was ready immediately. The room felt like it had been virtually untouched since 1940, aside from the several thick layers of paint that coated all of the drawers throughout the room. It felt like they re-painted parts of the room annually, as you could tell some of the hinges/screws were buried deeply below about 20 coats. But all I needed was a room to crash in for a few hours a night. I was nowhere near my hotel 17 hours a day while I ventured into the city, so there was no need for luxury conditions. I thought it was funny how they don't even take your info down by computer while you're checking in. It's still all done by hand on carbon paper, which makes you feel like you've gone back in time to 1990...but I guess that's why the rooms are so cheap! Here are my minor complaints: 1) A TV Channel Guide would have been convenient. I was struggling to find the NCAA tournament games, which can make a guy crazy. 2) The bathroom could have used some semblance of a counter to place toiletries on. 3) No matter what direction I walked, I felt like I was hiking up Mount Rushmore. Obviously this is a problem that the Hotel cannot do a thing about, but I felt like adding it in there as a bonus complaint. People that have lived in Texas and Florida their whole lives aren't used to having to scale a mountain en route to breakfast. All that aside, it doesn't get more budget friendly than Mayflower, and I will definitely look into staying there again! read more

We stayed here for two nights during the middle of the week. It was reasonably priced. Very cute Hotel and a nice size room. Large walk in closet. Very clean. The room did have a funny smell that reminded me of a nursing home. We sprayed the room with Freebreze which helped. They provided breakfast which was a Continental breakfast, muffins, breads, ham and cheese slices. Not bad for free. Staff was very nice and helpful. Parking was included, but it's in the basement. Extremely small driveway for compact cars only. Had to fold in my mirrors and only had an inch on each side. It is a minimum 2 night stay. But we would stay there again. read more

I mostly just stayed here because I decided to drive to SF on a whim, didn't want to spend a lot, and my friend who lives down the street found this place for me. I couldn't find any other places available on such short notice, and definitely not for this price. It is vaguely reminiscent of the sort of place some low-life-step-above-a-hobo would stay for a weekly rate while drinking himself to death. But I think that is helped by the fact that it has a kitchenette. I think it is better than the last hotel I stayed at in SF, Hotel Des Arts, simply because it has an actual view instead of a brick wall, and the kitchenette is a nice thing to have too. Location of HDA is slightly better, and obviously the painted rooms are cool, but other than those small differences, I'd say the two are very similar. Kind of old, dingy,... but I think I am spoiled. The first hotel I stayed at in SF was the W. Now that's a hotel... or at least it was back in 1999. Another cool thing about Mayflower is they have a safe place to park your car for free if you happen to drive there. Also, there is an excellent little market right next door that has fresh produce and a deli. The continental brekkie had organic applesauce and green tea, which I found to be kind of amazing since I expected only danishes and coffee, nothing I could consume. There was free, unrestricted wifi in my room as well as a bath tub. I really can't complain. I would probably stay here again. read more

Excellent hotel for a great price!! We took the shuttle from the airport and the neighborhood looked a little scary passing tenderloin. But around the immediate area of the hotel was nice and we felt safe. Union square is very close. The room was nice and the bed is amazing! We parked in the garage for 1 night. It was so small and I had to direct my husband up and down the garage. Alamo and national rental place is 2 blocks away!! When leaving, we were given a coupon for the shuttle bus back. Paid 22 total for 2 people (coming we paid $18 each). Overall great stay!! read more

This was my first time driving to San Fran by car (from Oregon)! There are tons of hotels around San Fran, but they are either overly expensive or really cheap+trashy. This hotel was excellent with unbeatable prices in this area. Seriously. I looked up hotels in the heart of San Fran for over 10 hours, but there were none that could beat the price, service, and convenience of Mayflower. I stayed two nights, which also happens to be their minimum stay requirement (keep this in mind when you plan your trip). I was VERY pleased with the service. The initial room I was given ended up being too small for my family, but I let the owner know; he happily (and quickly) changed me to a much bigger room! The owner at the desk also mapped out the city and all the good tourist attractions. In addition, my van was too big for their free parking garage, but the owner let me park right in front of the hotel. Other hotels charge $30-70/day for parking. The breakfast is pretty good as well. Not a lot of places in San Fran give you a free breakfast! Keep in mind that this hotel is old school (meaning lots of traditional antique-y things, 19th century decorations, etc.). Overall, amazing experience. Extremely clean. GREAT service. I had low expectations for San Fran but they were exceeded to the point where I'd stay at Mayflower everytime I visit and recommend it to everyone who comes to this city. read more

This hotel is awesome. The rate for it is VERY reasonable and truly amazing, considering the location, cleanliness and amenities this hotel has to offer. The room is very decently sized (I didn't feel like I was staying in a locker, which I feel for many other SF hotels.), and even had a kitchenette. The kitchenette comes with a fridge, a microwave, plates, and silverware, and a sink for rinsing the dishes. The bathroom is clean, with good shower pressure and comfortable towels, and the bed is VERY comfortable, and CLEAN. All of the staff are extremely pleasurable and helpful. Breakfast is also served in the AM - it's pretty basic, but it'll get you what you need to start the day. Lastly, my all time favorite amenity, they have a garage that is FREE to park in for your entire stay. The garage IS first come, first serve and you cannot call to "reserve" a parking space. The hotel was build in the mid 1920s, and the garage is extremely small, so you will not be able to get large SUVs / vehicles in it, sadly. They will usually also tell you to go down very slowly and to fold in your mirrors, AND DO IT. You may not think you need to, but you will. Still great though, especially since it's free! The only thing I would be weary about is walking around at night, by yourself. The immediate surrounding area feels safe / fine outside the hotel, but things can get a little shaky if you head a couple blocks down Jones or Taylor. read more

This event made the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle; on 11 February 1929, it read: "102 Room [Hotel] Last Word in Modern Guest Accommodations." In June 2010, I spent a while staying in hotels during a several-month-long work-related move to SF. During this time, I stayed in the Mayflower for a week. This hotel might be the best value accommodation in SF. It's usually south of $100 per night and here's what you get for that: excellent location; free internet access that's also fast and reliable (it's definitely not the type of "free" internet access offered by some hotels, which is actually just a connection so fragile you can barely remain online long enough to order their "premium internet service" for $9.99/night); you also get an (excellent) breakfast. The rooms are impeccably clean; again, it's an old hotel but things that should be new are new--like for instance the carpet and bed linens. The rooms are a good size. Each room's entry way has a 'kitchenette' along one wall, including a decent-sized refrigerator. The bathrooms are small and haven't been refurbished in a while, but they are very clean. In each room a massive closet. These are not coat closets; these are like, store-your-christmas-stuff-and-outdoor-gear-and-mountain-bikes-and-winter-cloth-kind of closets--roughly the size of my freshman-year dorm room. Paris Hilton would find these closets adequate. Why did hotels built in the 1930's have such big closets anyway? i don't know, but every old black-and-white (50's-60's) movie i've watched, in which someone takes a vacation, they travel with those large trunks, like the kind that magicians stuff their lovely assistants in and make them disappear (the assistants, not the trunks). In any event, if you are going to unpack and store a trunk, you need a serious closet. Like many old hotels, there's no air con, but the windows open, and there's a ceiling fan. So why haven't you ever heard of the Mayflower? I don't know. I don't think they like to pay for advertising. They also don't like paying an ecommerce site to handle their online bookings (seriously). So if you go to their website and click on 'reservations' it just invites you to contact the hotel by email. So that's what i did--thinking how pointless this is while i was doing it. About an hour later i get an email from Hester, confirming my reservation for the following week--no request for a credit card, etc., she just wanted to know about what time i planned on arriving. Anyway, I showed up a week later and they were waiting for me--not Hester, but Nancy, the other lady that runs the hotel with her. read more

Even if the room had been clean (which it wasn't) and the beds had been comfortable (which they weren't) and the continental breakfast had been abundant (which... well, you're getting the pattern) I would have given Mayflower a low rating. Why? Because the owner relentlessly berated her employee in front of us while we were checking in. Have you seen those shows "What would you do?" where something crazy happens and you're supposed to think about how you would react? It was like that -- but just not a TV show. She actually interrupted our process to make him feel bad about something completely inane. Not once, not twice, but three times she called him dumb for wearing a short sleeve shirt. And by the way, he is *not* dumb. He was exceedingly nice and helpful, despite the fact that their reservation system is a huge paper book. And then she blamed the door not being open on him. "Don't mind him -- we RARELY put him on days" when she could have just as easily stoppered the door. Other things to note: The whole place feels like a horror movie. Maybe it's because it's old but there was this really creepy sense about it. I'm not one for "bad vibes" but I got them here. Our room smelled weirdly of cat. We both had terrifying dreams with similar themes. The elevators are tiny steel door contraptions that felt like they could plunge at any moment. As for more useful knowledge, the parking garage is so tiny i had to pull in my mirrors to squeeze in. The wifi is slower than molasses. We found a pair of male socks under my bed. There are about three electrical outlets in the rooms, total, and two are behind the bed. No guests after 9pm. Our heater didnt work. Oh and how did I forget this? We got TWO calls about people making noise complaints. The first time when we were sleeping (zonked out) and the second time when we were packing at 8am. Perhaps packing in your room whilst barely awake constitutes a noise violation. This was a stop we made because we were desperate for a shower and a bed to sleep in. We bypassed other cheaper options because of the high star rating. Two hours after checking in, we were ready to change our flights and get out of the city. Spend your $100 elsewhere. read more

I stayed here from June 23-26, 2014 in a family room for 3 people total. My other 2 friends got a regular room. I stayed in room 607, the most top floor. There was a queen size bed and a day bed. The day bed can fit 2 people so the room is actually good for 4 people. The hotel is in a very good location. Very close to everything. CVS, trader joes, and walgreens are about 4 blocks away so if you forget anything, it's a quick walk there. Union square and Chinatown are a few blocks away as well. It's a very safe area but I think if you walk a few blocks down it's the tenderloin which is not the best area in town. We checked in early around 12pm but regular check in is 3pm. The woman at the desk I think her name is Hester was so sweet and nice. She had our reservations on a desk and just asked for my name and then we filled out some paper work and charged the credit card. She gave us the wifi password and the keys to the room. She showed us how to use the elevator. It was cool, old school. The hotel is not a five star place like the marriott or anything like that so if that's what you're used to then don't come here. But I don't care for that stuff especially since I'm mostly gonna be using I for showers and sleeping. I'm not picky with my hotels. As long as it doesn't look rotten and gross and everything works, I'm happy. I actually liked the room. It comes with a tv but sound isn't the best. Also has a kitchenette (sink, mini fridge, and microwave). I never used the microwave though. Having the sink is a big plus to me especially when you have so many people trying to get ready at the same time. There's a big closet that you can walk in and change in if you wanted to. The closet has a full length mirror. The bathroom is a regular bathroom (tub/shower, toilet, sink). The towels are really soft! They give you extra towels and such too. They also give you shower caps, lotion, bar soap, and conditioning shampoo. I didn't use it because I had my own things. The only bad thing is there aren't a lot of outlets. I brought a 6 plug extension cord so I was ok. There was no hair dryer but we just asked the front desk and they gave us one. There is no A/C but the windows open and there is a ceiling fan. When I went it was pretty chilly 50-60s everyday so I didn't need an A/C. My friends actually turned on the heat in their room lol every morning there is a free continental breakfast from 7a-9a. Coffee, orange juice, tea, hot water. Different types of bread, plain bagels, muffins, scones, biscuits, Nutella, peanut butter, cream cheese, jelly, jam, boiled eggs, cookies, cereal. It was enough for me to eat a little and go on to whatever I had to do that day until lunch. I liked the bagels. I don't know what it was about them but I liked them. The wifi in my room was good. My room was in the middle of the hotel. My friends were on the side of the building and their signal wasn't the best. On our first day, we asked Hester what she suggested we do and she took the map they have on the counter and put a big X on the tenderloin area so that was pretty funny. I appreciated that. We knew it was a bad area but it's funny that she marked it as a NO. She gave us some recommendations on where to go and walk around so that was cool. Overall this hotel is great. I would definitely stay here again. Such a good price too. I paid ~480 for 3 people for 3 nights. I didn't use the garage so I can't tell you anything about it but another couple said it's $25 a day to park there. I'll be posting pictures soon. read more

First of all, I review things for what they are. This is not the Ritz, let's just start there. If you are expecting immaculately clean walls, some grand cooked to order breakfast, and some 4 star room service, the Argonaut is a great choice at about 200 dollars per night extra. This little slice of home is absolutely fantastic for what it is. It's really inexpensive, quaint, and full of personality. My husband and I stayed for 2 days coming from Arizona. We got in at 2am, no problem. The guy at the check in counter was so nice, he was asking about our evening and stopped to say "I'm sure you guys are spent and want to lie down, I'll stop talking, here's your key." haha Cute. We were spent. We get in, check the place out. Tiny bathroom, cute little kitchen area with teacups and everything, and an oddly HUMONGOUS walk in closet. It was crazy big. Weird. The bed was not very comfortable. And it was a double, but that's what I asked for so no complaints here. I saw someone comment on how tiny the double bed was. Uhmmm... it's a double bed. They're small. Anyways, we hit the sack, and got up the next morning bound for Haight street. The breakfast had a very surprisingly wide selection of food. We ate muffins, toast, skipped the hardboiled eggs, and I think my husband had a scone. There were 6 different kinds of tea, coffee, and OJ. I had the tea. It was delish. Back at the room, I needed an iron, called the front desk, and they had one for me! woohoo! The lady at the front desk told us the best way to get to our destination, and we were on our way. That night went on without a hitch. We popped in at about 10, got our stuff and back later on for the night. Next morning, we used the absolutely adorable computer station on the 2nd floor. Then my husband used the computer (free wifi, free printer), and I sat and read one of their books from their bookshelf and sat on the comfy couch next to the computers overlooking the lobby. I was blown away by the cuteness of it all. Seriously. Our whole stay was great, but then I lost my wallet! I was so bummed, they didn't call me back after a couple days. I called and they still hadn't found it. Someone had stayed in our room and they still hadn't found it. But then they FOUND IT!! The sweet lady at the front called to let me know, and she mailed it out! Yaaaaay!! Bottom line is we love this place. We couldn't have had a better experience. read more

After I had to flee from a methhead roomie after less then a week I stayed here for about 10 days. Wish I could have stayed for good. All my troubles would have been over and I'd still be living here (@the time they had permanent rental units). I think I was the happiest ever in this part of SF. Damn my puny income. read more

Not bad not bad although there were a few quirks. I stayed here during the Outside Lands music festival. I stayed here for five nights and it totaled about $580 which isn't terrible. PROS: -I called the day before to ask what time check-in was and was told 3pm, which was a bummer because my flight came in at 8am so we had to kill some time. (Totally not their fault obviously since that's a pretty standard check-in time, just poor planning on my end). Exhausted, the boyfriend and I wandered in around 11:30am to see if we could at least drop off our bags, turns out the room was already ready! It was perfect to get a nap in, so I was happy. It's the small things haha. -Our reservation was ready to go with no hassles AT ALL! I don't think I've ever checked into a hotel with so much ease, usually they lose my reservation, have it under a weird name, the dates are wrong, ect. Maybe I just stay at shady places but I was surprised when these guys got it right the first time haha. -The staff was extremely helpful, polite and nice :D -The Mayflower Market directly to the left of the hotel was very helpful for buying those odds and ends plus snacks. -Tons of places to eat/shop in the immediate area, with Chinatown being about 6 or 7 blocks away. -The continental breakfast is nice, very basic stuff, coffee, muffins, toast, fruit, oatmeal ect. CONS: -This might be me being lame, but for the life of us we couldn't find the remote for the tv, yes this is petty but I feel I shouldn't have to hunt for it. We asked the front desk for a new one but they told us our room SHOULD have one so we should check one more time. Turns out it was under the bed...geez. Lol. -The tv was so static-y that it was hard to watch the few channels we did get. -Walls are pretty thin, I could hear our neighbors come in late and hear their conversations word for word. -While there was free wifi (awesome!) it was a bit flaky, my ipad was getting disconnected every 20 minutes or so. Annoying yes but not a deal breaker, that's what 3G is for! -Half the light fixtures in our room didn't work, the main ones did but various lamps didn't. -The bathroom door didn't latch all the way, it was...odd. So we are in the middle of our 10 day stay here and we both LOVE this hotel! It is nice to be welcomed by such a genuine staff each day, who gives great guidance on getting around the area, lower Nob Hill. Location is walking distance to Union Sq and all areas easily accessible by bus or cable car, also used Lyft a few times which is convenient. Nice room and free basic but good breakfast, cool second floor sitting area and 2 nice Macs for your use as well. Recommend Honey Honey Crepes for breakfast not a far walk! Can take cable car close to the Whole Foods for your typical yuppie necessities lol. Buy a week long pass for cable car, bus at nearby Walgreens, ask them how to walk there. Keep in mind do not walk into the Tenderloin neighborhood! Day or night not safe, but hotel area is fine. Highly recommend this place, even for lovebirds like us :) read more

I am a frugal traveler, make no mistake. I save my money for brilliant meals or extraordinary events. All I generally need for a hotel is internet, a bed, and a shower. So I read all sorts of reviews. I took a chance on the Hotel Mayflower. It had free parking, so that swayed me. It sounded a bit like the Moore Hotel in Seattle (except the Moore doesn't have parking). I was very pleasantly surprised. The Mayflower was a great frugal hotel. The rooms were very clean, relatively freshly painted, the hallways were fine, two eclectic elevators, a very clean restroom, a walk in closet, a microwave, a refrigerator, plates, glasses, coffee maker, sink, & utensils. There is an ironing board & you can borrow an iron. They also have a free breakfast, but it's not much. Cookies, breads, apples, ready to microwave oatmeal, coffee, juice, apple sauce, and not much more. But I wasn't counting on a free anything, frankly, so this was a bonus. I do wish they'd keep the coffee available other than just during breakfast hours. There's also a business center with computers available on the 1st floor. The internet in the rooms was variable & often fluctuated to where it was not usable. I have other sources, but that was a tad bit of an inconvenience. There is a washateria just around the corner. Their front desk people were the most helpful I've encountered in quite a while. This hotel is one of the best values I've found in quite a while. read more

Saturday night, 2 double beds, kitchenette with sink, microwave, fridge, silverware and cups - $135+tax. AND A PRIVATE BATH! So many places in SF to choose from, but this was great and very old SF. Each room has a painting on the door and in the room based on different SF landmarks. Pretty cool. Elevator was a little scary, since it's tiny and you feel like you're in a coffin - but can make a good talking point with your guests. *Nervous laughter* Walking distance to BART, Union Square, but not too close so you can avoid the throngs of people. Walk to Uncle Vito's Italian restaurant. Excellent. read more

This hotel is a great value in a convenient location. I stay at The Mayflower every time I go to San Francisco. The rooms have a classic charm and are always clean. There is a market located next door that sells food and liquor...what else do you need? If you want to get out and see the city the hotel is located walking distance from almost everything! The staff is always friendly and helpful! Free parking is available but the underground lot is TINY! I have had pretty good luck with street parking. All in all - this hotel is a gem! Why am I giving a 3 star hotel a 5 star review? Because it deserves it! The staff was beyond helpful, the rooms were clean and comfortable, and everything worked well. The hotel is old, and for us that just added to the charm. We were doing our best to not spend a ton of money this vacation, and this place was less expensive than the super eight miles outside of town. We walked everywhere from here, and were right in the heart of the city. I would absolutely stay here again, and recommend it to all of my friends. The old time elevator was very cool, and the breakfast was better than most. read more

I'd like to keep this place a secret but I can't help to leave a 5 -star review for this hotel. I've had friends stay here on many occasions over the years. I've stayed here a few nights several years ago. This place is very clean, affordable and charming. The location is excellent. At $70 a night in San Francisco, you can't beat it. The staff is very friendly too. I like the old style decor in the lobby as well. read more
