The staff was relatively nice but the cafe was very busy. It was hard to find somewhere to sit. The food options looked great but I only got to try one pastry.

We clearly didn't plan things out well, as we had to scramble to hit stops 6 and 7 within an hour of closing, on our last full day in Edinburgh. But, in our defense, coffee shops close up super early in Edinburgh! We hustled our way from the Mile towards Cairngorm, side-stepping tourists and hurrying across intersections. On a normal day, it would've been a nice jaunt through town, but on this day, it was a hectic seemingly-longer-than-it-should-have-been-half-sprint to the front door. I did love the feel of this shop, from the steps leading down to the cozy interior and the bags of spent coffee bean lining the ceiling. The girl working that day was very nice and welcoming. We placed our order and settled into a small table near the back of the building. I kept an eye on the barista (hubby's back was to the counter) so that I could pop up to grab our drinks when they were ready, but she brought them to us, instead. She saw our Disloyal 7 cards out on the table, and said, "Be sure to bring that by before you leave so that I can stamp them!" The lattes were good, with a nice, rich and creamy flavor. I think I could've ended our night here, wrapped up in the warmth of a good latte and a comfortable chair, but my husband pointed out that we had time to get to the final stop on our list, if we hurried. So, we went up to the counter and had the barista stamp their slice, and then hurried once more into the cold Edinburgh dusk.

Fortunately, my wife could grab a salad box that was gluten free at Global Deli (or known as the Deli Global if the sign is any indication) and I grabbed a bacon roll and a haggis roll. Overall, it was good for what we needed to have on the go. It took a few minutes for my rolls to get done. The bacon roll was good, which worked well with the thickness of the roll. The haggis roll didn't feel as voluminous enough where you tasted more of the bread than the haggis. The millionaire bar was very good and held up well on the train ride back to London.

The menu looks quite tempting having paninis, wraps, sandwiches.... My wife ordered a wrap [ Mexican Hot Wrap], and I saw their soup of the day [Leek Potato Soup] on the menu and it looked quite tempting. I asked can I taste it before I ordered. And they agreed... It was yummy, it was a sweet potato soup with a dash of black pepper. The wrap was crunchy, it was grilled superbly with tasty filling.. and so was soup... Cool, cozy place, good food and warm owners.... 4/5 PS: They charge 50/70 pence extra for dine-in arrangements, that's fine though.

Finding a decent outlet for sandwiches and other items of a take away nature that suits your lunch…read moretime requirements can be a tricky investigative process. If you're going to give somewhere your lunch time custom on a daily basis, then the place has got to be a cut above, because there's nothing more disappointing than having had a stressful morning and looking forward to your lunch, then being sorely underwhelmed by your first ravenous chomp into a panini lacking in flavour or with not quite enough salad leaves. With Herbie, thankfully, you can buy your favourite lunchtime creation, safe in the knowledge it'll definitely rank highly on the tastiness scale. There is an ace choice of daily soups on offer, more than usual for a sandwich shop I would say, plus there's a super range of panini combinations, and other breads and fillings to select from.

There a 'filling counter' where you can pick & choose what to have on your sandwich, baguette or roll. When available I tend to go for the Brown multi-seeded granary with medium cooked roast beef, black pepper, some English mustard and red onion. Yumm! Their soups are daily made and are packed with flavours. This is the West End so expect to pay a premium for your food. (not fair but that is the way it is) - Herbie at least something to give back on your hard earned cash! (oh, and they have a loyalty card too) I say for a slightly more luxurious lunch you can visit them, you won't be disappointed.
