The ocean is less intense in the cove and you can even move toward the mouth of the river where it is even calmer. The scenic view in the morning was my favorite part as I drank my coffee and listened to the birds feeding there babies. SOOO many birds. The river is only a 5 minute boat ride to the foggy awesome that is the Pacific Ocean. My son recently purchased his first boat and he, his Dad and his Grandpa took off for just 2 hours bringin home a boat load of fish. No joke. Abalone seems to be the big thing here. Guys in wet suits everywhere. Besides RVs there were tents and some just divers in trucks with BBQs on the tailgate. Seals swam into the marina. And again too many birds to count flew overhead. Chris is the manager and he is super accomodating. There are bathrooms and a shower too. As far as "glamping" goes, this was fantastic. There was one douchy guy that lived there in a trailer that didnt like my dog but his loss cuz my dog is awesome and just wanted to say hi. Oh and almost forgot, the fish cleaning stations helped so much! (the birds like them too)

There was another small parking lot closer to the trail. We walked past the camp sites to get to the trail. The sites were on the smaller side, but all of them seemed to have a spigot. I used the flushing toilets before starting the hike. We did the Fern Canyon Trail to Falls Loop Trail- 6.2 miles. The first part was mostly flat, but there is some elevation gain for the loop. We went counterclockwise, but you reach the waterfall quicker if you do the loop clockwise. The 36-foot waterfall might not be the most impressive, but it was nice. There's a fallen tree trunk in between the two streams for you to sit and take some photos. We sat on a bench afterwards and enjoyed the views while having some snacks. I guess we got there at a good time, right before a crowd of people descended. Overall, the forested hike was nice and peaceful, and we also spotted a banana slug. There are some muddy parts though. I wished I read a bit more about the park before going. I would've wanted to do the short trail for Devil's Punchbowl which also has views of the bridge. Darn...

Serene quiet park…read more great photo spots! There's the iconic bridge but in order to get on that beach you have to walk on a narrow wobbling log in the water. Pretty scary for me. I finally did it, with the help of a very kind stranger who held my hand and it felt all better. Interesting how a lot of the fear is in your head. Why is there not a better safer path to get there? The Rangers were lovely, the site host was very kind, we stayed at site 27 which was shielded from the wind, they had clean bathrooms and showers, a camp fire program on Friday night and sold wood onsite. We got to do a lovely hike, hang out at the beach, go to the Noyo fish Company in Fort Brag... it was great! We were also warned about a black bear who had been visiting recently. But alas did not have an encounter. However, we did find raccoon hand prints all over our table cloth and bear box. So do use your bear box!!

Returned to Van Damm State Park for a second time and already looking forward to future visits…read more I've yet camped at the upper campsites. Only experienced the two lower loops closest to the entrance as well as the beach across the highway. It's an overall great campground. The only concern would be your neighbors and the mosquitos at sites that are along the creek. Most if not all sites are RV friendly. Anything larger than a mid-sized travel trailer, you might want to be selective. For trailers that are low profiled, stick to the lower loops to avoid scraping. Opted to never pull a trailer here because I'm not a fan of towing on highway 1. Typically, the host would drive around the campground delivering firewood at 12 dollars a bundle. Otherwise, they are available at the host's designated site.

Fantastic secluded Bed & Breakfast near Mendocino!…read more We were looking for a place to stay near Mendocino, but didn't want to day in the big bustling village of Mendocino ( :-) ), so we chose this place. It is located a couple of miles away from the town, in a clearing in a forest. It is so quiet there that you can hear the silence! (Except in the evening where the frogs in the pond entertain with a pleasant concert of frog music; it is a nice sound and relatively quiet). It is very quiet since the house is located down a gravel road through the forest. The gardens are filled with a large variety of colorful flowers that were beautiful. The home cooked breakfasts are very good. The eggs come from the resident chickens. Very fresh eggs! We stayed three nights. We had the downstairs room in the main house, adjacent to the pleasant common living room, where enjoyed sitting in the evenings. Our room had glass doors that opened up to a deck that overlooked the woods in the back of the house. Beautiful. This was a relaxing trip for us. We spent the days on the nearby (1.8 miles away) beach watching the waves or at a shady cliff edge in the Mendocino Headlands watching the ocean.

The host has a strong personality and will let you know exactly what she's thinking. Since my stay here was for pleasure, I felt that the lack of hospitality took a bit away from the overall experience. Nonetheless, we met other pleasant guests whom we enjoyed conversation with over breakfast. I was happy with our room which was comfortable, cute, and spacious enough. However, there was a lingering dank smell of either mildew or animal urine which I couldn't exactly put my finger on. Overall, we had a pleasant stay here on our first visit to Mendocino.

Asked for the grill part for the fire ring helped us get it and even let us borrow a griller. The camp sites are nice with water and electricity also the site had WiFi. Some problems I could see happening is it seems there is only one bathroom and shower spot that if too many people camp at once could be a problem. The roads are decent but not perfectly smooth also the site I was in some of the ground was a little hard but it's okay. Other than that, I really don't have any complaints. It's a peaceful, friendly place to camp, and I think more people would enjoy it if they gave it a chance.
