He commissioned Cairnwood Estate, a spectacular Beaux Arts home, for his wife Gertrude and their children. Sadly, Gertrude died only three years after the home was complete, in the late 1800s. Lesson learned: don't ignore signs of a ruptured appendix! Pitcairn's family followed the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg, founder of the New Church. The spectacular Bryn Athyn Cathedral, with an active congregation, is located on Cairnwood's grounds. The property -- I believe the whole thing, including Cairnwood -- is now owned by the Academy of the New Church. We took guided tours of the estate and gothic cathedral. Beautiful, fascinating and well worth a visit. The docents impart a wealth of information. Frederick Olmstead -- whose name you may recognize from NY's Central Park -- designed the grounds with preservationist Charles Eliot. The estate is a popular venue for wedding receptions, but unless you're a parishioner of New Church it's off limits for ceremonies. "How come?" I asked the woman who guided us through the cathedral. The building itself is quaint and well-maintained, and while the space is small, it's packed with interesting information and exhibits about its role in the founding of the country. (LOL things I learned while touring the hall) The surrounding garden is peaceful and beautifully kept -- a great spot to take a breather while exploring the area. Inside, they sell some charming little souvenirs like president rubber ducks, which are perfect for kids. It's completely free to enter, but there's a donation box in the center -- definitely consider dropping something in to help keep this gem open. A quick, meaningful stop that's well worth your time.

You are treated as an honored guest from the minute you arrive until the minute you leave, and it is amplified if you are someone's guest they really put the effort in to treat everyone with the utmost respect and make the dining and relaxation experience at the price point that I am sure the members are paying for the opportunity. The views of the city are wonderful. Having worked a job that allowed me access to the roofs of nearly every high rise in the city, I have seen every angle and panorama of Philadelphia from up high, but the windowed seat views of the entire city while dining here are unparalleled. So you shouldn't expect the customer service experience that you might be used to elsewhere while wedding shopping. That's what the review below is likely referring to. Personally, my wife and I found the pampering treatment annoying and were able to save a lot of money by using vendors who don't do the whole over the top wedding thing.

Most of the space is configured as an open floor plan, so the rooms are large and wide open. This can lead to issues with noise bleed if any presentations are planned, and I can't comment on the quality of the meeting rooms they offer. The food stand offered basic food options including hamburgers, French fries, chicken tenders, salad's, Coca-Cola beverages, deserts, and other items. I had the chicken tenders and fries, which were decent, and the prices were fine. Negatives were not enough large bathrooms with multiple stalls and I'd be concerned attending a larger event here with how small several of the bathrooms were. Overall, The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center is a reasonably good place to attend an event.
