Plenty of parking, with dedicated parking for disabled/wheelchair-users, 24-hour lobby and p.o. box access. They charge 50% more for a p.o. box than the other post offices on Pine Island charge. I'm sure this post office has no control over the pricing, as that's probably set by administrators in the region or in Washington, so I can't really criticize them for that. It would be nice if they had Saturday hours, but that's no doubt a budget thing as well. Still, for many people who work elsewhere on the island or off-island, having only M-F 8:30 - 4:00 hours means not being able to use this post office for things like mailing or picking up packages.

The site is now the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Marker 128 was installed in 1965 by the Florida Board of Parks and Historic Memorials in cooperation with The Southwest Florida Historical Society. Florida became a US Territory in 1821 and forts were built throughout Florida to offer settlers protection from the Seminoles. One of the first forts to be built during the Seminole Indian Wars was a fort named for Lieutenant John Harvie. The fort was reestablished in 1850 and named Fort Myers, honoring Lieutenant Abraham C. Myers who was the son-in-law of the commander of Fort Brooke in Tampa. The Seminole War ended in 1858. During the Civil War Fort Myers was once more re-activated by Unioun troops looking to cut off food supply to Confederate troops in Georgia and to feed Federal troops patrolling the coast off of Sanibel. The Southernmost battle of the Civil War, a fight between Northern and Southern troops occurred across the Caloosahatchee River in 1865. In 1866, Manuel A, Gonzalez and Joseph Vivas took up residence at the recently abandoned fort. Other settlers arrived and this led to a post office when it was platted in 1876. In 1885 of the community of 349 people was incorporated as Fort Myers. Some of the wood from the fort was used in the construction of the downtown buildings.

It is next to a professional office and with an empty lot across the street so that's only slightly creepy. The marker reads, "During the Seminole Wars, this was the site of a military cemetery for soldiers of Fort Harvie, 1841-42, and Fort Myers, 1850-58. The cemetery was located outside the breastworks of the respective forts which were in the vicinity of the present Federal Building in downtown Fort Myers. When Fowler Street was cut through, the graves were moved to the civilian cemetery on Michigan Avenue." The original Fort Harvie was build on the grounds that no compromise downtown Fort Myers. The post was then renamed Ft. Myers in honor of Colonel Abraham C. Myers, who was soon to wed the daughter of Major General David E. Twiggs, then commanding Fort Brooke (Tampa). The expanded fort eventually became quite an impressive base. At it's peak, it featured a 1,000 foot wharf, and more than 50 buildings constructed of hardy yellow pine. Now I must say I do arrive almost two hours ahead of my flight. I refuse to put undo pressure on myself at an airport. It only took me one time to miss a flight to make sure I arrive early. Most agents probably think they are overworked and underpaid. They very well may be I don't know. But I do know I use yes ma'am and yes sir when they greet me. I also use thank you and please. Such simple words will usually make things go easier. I have found you get more with sugar than you get with vinegar.

Actually I'm a regular as I have passed through RSW close to a hundred times in the past 3+ years…read more I have TSA Pre-Check, so that helps (although sometimes I've flown early in the morning and TSA isn't even working yet). The airport is always bright and clean. Baggage claim is pretty quick and best of all - its a small airport so it's less crowded than most other airports. You could arrived most times just an hour ahead of time, and make it to your plane (with no checked bags and not at the end of season), but I always arrive 2 hours early. The only draw back to that is that they don't have a lot of "retail", so theres not a lot to do while you wait. Strangely, when we lived in NJ leaving out of Philadelphia we were alway conscious about snow and ice. At RSW, you have to think about thunder storms. Funny.
