    I D.

Go in with the lowest expectations and you'll likely still be disappointed. The employees of the SB DMV have mastered the art of passing the buck, paper pushing, and wholly live up to the DMV stereotype. A great example of your taxpayer money being wasted in this ineffectually run entity. Good Luck!

Sign leads people AWAY from the Non-Appointment entrance. The actual entrance sign can't be seen because it faces a wall when open!

DMV visits are generally not expected to be a positive experience, but my business at the CA DMV Santa Barbara office was the worst ever. I needed to convert my out-of-state driver's license (OOS DL) to a CA one. 1) One needs to change licenses within 10 days, but the next appointment was over 2 months away. So, I went as a "non-appointment. 2) Online wait time stated 20 mins., but it was actually over 3 hrs., and I didn't even finish my business! 3) Signage is wrong, contradictory, and nonexistent. I've even attached an example: The entrance door for non-appts was open, so its sign could not be seen, as it was facing the wall. Yet, *right next to the entrance* is a visible sign advising people that the entrance is in another direction! 4) I had to deal with at least four different personnel, and most of them were gruff. Example: As I was explaining a detail in response to a question, I was interrupted with "It's a yes/no question; what's your answer?!" When I requested another employee to return of my OOS DL, they insisted that they had already done so. The matter was resolved only when I asked for a supervisor, and the employee suddenly "found" my license. No apology. 5) My OOS DL was rejected as legitimate (I've had it for 7 years) because it had an "M" for motorcycle endorsement, but no other classes noted. I explained that that's how my state listed things -- it normally would show "none" under "class," rather than a letter. I showed them a copy of my wife's DL, which had "none" listed. In spite of this evidence, and common sense, it was still rejected. There are other negative details as well, but this review is already too long. The bottom line is that the next day I drove to another DMV office that was some distance away. Non-appointments walk in the only entrance, where an employee filled out some paperwork for me and directed me where to go, within 30 seconds. Then I waited about 20 mins. for the next employee, took/passed my written tests, and received my provisional CA DL.

This office is inefficient and impolite. I had to pay to correct a mistake that someone at the DMV made. Ridiculous.

I mean i went in w/o an appointment and wham bang was accosted by a huge group of people seeking succor from the cali DMV! HA! I went through almost the entire process including taking a photo which made me look like Rock Hudson when it was published that he had AIDS! ( i swear. i look gaunt and ready to meet my maker!) Unfortunately i failed the test and decided to hightail out of the place. I spent over a week in SB for holidays and family illness issues and so i came here on the 27th to take my test over. First of all everyone working here were still on the high of Christmas and treated us all few applicants like long lost family members. It scared me initially and then i got into it. I did ask if i could take my photo over and the nice lady replied: $35 to redo. Ok for that. I mean for 35 bucks i could have a few drinks sitting at the Tee Off bar, right? In any event i passed the test easily, missed 2 and received graciously, my 2024 renewal. The peeps that work here are the best: full of smiles and helpful and caring. Why can't all of the DMZ offices follow that trend? And why can't it be Christmas the whole year 'round? Cheers!

My California state driver's license was going to expire on my birthday and I was well aware of the approaching need for a REAL ID to travel domestically without a passport in hand. I wanted to upgrade my driver's license into a REAL ID. After all, it is the same price of $35. The downfall: an in-person visit, proof of residency and citizenship, and another mugshot all required. I completed the majority of the semi-confusing process via the DMV online services website. I was boggled when it would ask me if I wished to receive a License or ID Card--since I view the REAL ID as being both of these in one. Nonetheless, I continued the process, paid for my renewed license online ("convenience" fee involved if you use a debit or credit card versus a bank account) and uploaded an image of my passport and two forms of residency. The system allows you to make an appointment of which were plentiful and provides a page with a unique identifier for them to access your account. I literally walked in and out within half an hour! This was a new time record for me. Kathleen and Shawn who worked the desks were lovely. Everyone I spoke to was surprisingly pleasant. I will forever go to this newly updated Goleta location for any future appointments.

I witnessed a male employee respond dismissively and rudely to a front desk worker who was simply asking for clarification. His tone was unprofessional, and it visibly affected her--she seemed startled and wasn't able to continue assisting me properly afterward. No one should be spoken to that way, especially in a work setting. It created an uncomfortable environment and made the overall experience feel disorganized. I hope management addresses this, because respectful communication between staff matters just as much as customer service.
