Had the pleasure to stop by for a daily Mass and if I was in the area I'd be here every day. The outside and inside of the parish is serene and peaceful. I didn't walk thru the garden area near the parking lot but seemed like a perfect place to sit and let God's peace be with you. Didn't have a chance to take photos as I was captivated by the beauty of the altar and stained glass windows. It also has one of my favorite sculptures of Michelangelo's Pieta. You can definitely find the Kerygma proclaimed here daily. If you're nearby, make this a stop for some prayer and worship. God bless read more

Hello yesterday Sunday 26 I was at mass at 5 pm, I noticed they refused to give the Eucharist to a lady who may see with close duty but she got hurt she cried for not reviewing the Eucharist I know her she live in the same building where I live the reason why they refuse to give the Eucharist I don't know but, I don't think she does anything wrong other the try to receive Jesus as much as she could I thought, no body knows what kind of war we have to fight so please don't let the woman without the strength the she received from Jesus that what felt you refuse to give Eucharist to the who really believes the Jesus is there for her she lose her mother she doesn't talk but she understands the Jesus is in there so please don't let leave without receiving Jesus. read more

Great location for a baptism I baptized my god daughter here the service was great and the atmosphere is great. they do it in two languages which is very convenient for every catholics language needs...my only gripe is the lady that gives instructions and rules. She will jump on you if you break one of the rules which makes it more disruptive people just want their special day captured from every angle I think they should ease up on that rule other than that its a good service location. read more

This is one of the most beautiful churches in Ventura county. If you like the old world architecture, you will like the design of this church, built in the early 1900's. It is beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside. The details are absolutely breathtaking, from the stain glass from the detailed work on the ceiling to the carved wood around he confessionals. Such perfection. If you want to just visit and seat and take it all in, they welcome to that, too. The high ceilings make it feel spacious, so that even on a full mass, it does not feel crowded. I have attended a couple wedding and baptisms here but not weekly mass. If you're visiting Candy cane lane a couple of streets over this year, come early and take a look inside this gorgeous historical church. read more

Santa Clara is historical growing up in Oxnard. The Romanesque style church has been built since the early 1900's and has provided Catholic worship and services since then. I enjoy seeing a lot of regulars and locals here because it shows what a tight knit community Oxnard has become :) Also, I usual don't sit in the pews because sitting down makes me feel comfy and fall asleep :) read more

Very welcoming parish. I was visiting from out of state and felt at home. Very nice mass. Dynamic and enthusiastic pastor.

Do NOT attempt to get married at this church. This church books events back to back and staff does not make an effort to clear out the guests for the next service. They will triple book weddings on weekends and you won't get the wedding you envision. The church coordinators and staff are rude. You won't have time for photos after your wedding at the altar. I've read reviews about getting married here and I can see why they were so negative. These were just all obvious observations as a wedding guest. I saw a rude coordinator marching around the church and telling people that they had to change their outfit. Their lack of professionalism and judgmental comments is the reason for so many Catholics are straying away from the church. The wedding party entered so unorganized and they seemed so stressed. You will be restricted from doing a lot. There are other Catholic Churches with nicer staff and who treat you with the time and respect you deserve. If getting married your entire life is a dream come true for you and a wish you had since you were a little girl or boy, this is not the place for you. The church is beautiful and sacred and amazing, but just do your due diligence and get a feel of other Catholic Churches. read more

We came out here on Christmas Eve , we are new to the neighborhood so we have not had a chance to get situated and get to know our community well so we thought what better than church on Christmas Eve and we picked the midnight mass. Everyone seemed very nice however the mass was beyond boring and the story lines did not grab your attention as they do . I mean don't get me wrong the main purpose was not to have a good time but my favorite mass of the entire year is the Christmas Eve mass and this one not only barely had Christmas spirit , The annual Midnight Mass is the first event on the Catholic Christmas calendar so I guess I was just expecting more .... the building seems nice and very clean , there were enough parking and the crowd were great and it seemed like great community to be a part of however the program alone was sadly putting us to sleep .... read more

I have photographed at least ten weddings at this amazing church. This past weekend was the first one that reverend Lucio Juarez was officiating. I`m not sure if he is one of your priests on staff, but he was by far the rudest man I`ve ever met. He insulted the guests by casting judgement on their religious practices in front of the bride and groom. He stated if anyone was living in sin they were not welcome to take part of blessing. Is this man declaring he is sinless and only allowing those with certain sins to take part in communion? Blasphemy! Also, he insisted I stand in one spot in the doorway in a room in the back for the entire hour otherwise I was not allowed inside the building. How disrespectful to the bride & groom who hire someone to capture the biggest day of their lives only to have this man ruin it by insulting comments, and controlling behavior. Please have a serious talk with him regarding his ego. He is not someone who resembles Jesus. If I photograph another wedding there, I will disregard his controlling demands and do what is best for the bride & groom. read more

My best friend got married here last week and I was the Best Man. It has been over 12 yrs since I've been back to this Church. When I pulled in to the parking lot for the rehearsal I saw the familiar steeple, trees, and grassy lawn in front of the Church. I felt like I had gone back in time.....not much has changed over the years. We were greeted by the wedding planner assigned by the parish and my friend's personal wedding planner and walked through the ceremony. It was pretty easy and only took around 20 minutes to review. Everyone was excited, especially my friend (groom) and the bride. The following day we came for the wedding ceremony and it went perfectly. Everyone from the Priest, Singers, and Wedding Planner was very professional and delivered an awesome ceremony. Will I return? I'm sure someday I will....when I'm back in town. read more

Absolutely love this church , not only is this church beautiful but father Carlos gives an amazing mass

I'm so disappointed, this is the second time, this year, that I tried to go to this church, just to pray in silence and it was closed. The First time which I thought was really odd was on Easter Sunday, around 3pm, and then again yesterday, Memorial Day, around noon. Even the side gate was locked by the candle stand, which is usually always open, was locked. Needless to say, I couldn't light a candle for the all the fallen service men and women who fought for our country. I understand closing the church at night to prevent vandalism, but this was daytime and a holiday. A holiday in which I believe people want to go to church and pray. While I was there other individuals arrived, who also just wanted to pray in silence, they also didn't understand why church was closed and also left upset. I thought church was was always open and it encourages people to come in and pray. It's such a beautiful church and it is really peaceful, It is just too bad that it's not always open. read more

The Santa Clara Church has and always will be a great parish to belong to. To those that complain about any of the fees that are charged they must remember that this a beautiful historic church and the maintenance and upkeep is rather expensive. So please try to understand. God Bless read more

Went here for a funeral a few weeks ago. Fr. Lucio was the the rudest priest that I have ever come across. He lambasted the congregation for chewing gum and then asked if anyone; had not been to mass EVERY Sunday, had not be to confesion recently, had been living with their boyfriend or girlfriend in sin that they please not come up to the alter for communion. Really at a funeral - he needs to be transferred to another church...maybe in central Russia. read more

I would like to make two recommendations: 1) Can you please consider adding a daily evening mass schedule. This will help to bring families together and the community of Oxnard. The early mass is not enough to cover the needs of the local area the church serves. 2). Please consider changing the mass intention process. I went this morning and was told all the masses are taken up except Sunday at 5pm. Can you either extend the list to include more or just take all the names for prayer and not call them out. In this way more prayer intentions can be added. Also please consider not charging $10 for mass prayer intentions. Jesus does not charge. Let's not confuse people with this practice. Also I would like to add that Santa Clara is open every single day from 8am-9pm. The only times the church is closed is on major holidays (after they have celebrated the 8am mass) which I believe is fair for the employees and priests to get the day off to enjoy with their families. read more

I strongly dislike Santa Clara Church. I used to come here when I was little and loved it but it's changed. I went for my aunts funeral and was supposed to serve the gifts but the lady did not let me due to a "short" dress. The dress was down half my knee! And the other person they let do it had a shorter dress than me. It was a very sad time and it made it worse that I couldn't even participate. read more

After reading the negative reviews posted here, I want to thank all of you folks who listed your reasons for giving this church one star. It lets me know there still a Catholic Church around that follows Catholic teaching. The lunatics that think they should come to communion regardless of the state of their soul, need to go back to catechism class. Thank you to the wonderful priests of the parish who recognize distribution of the Blessed Sacrament to those who are not fully in a state of grace is depravity. This post is addressed to all affiliated with Santa Clara Elementary School...As of Monday 2-2-15 Antonio my son was pulled out of class and sent home due to non-payment of tuition. This is not the first time in the past few months they have done this to Antonio. The reason why he goes there in the first place is cause my parents agreed to pay for it, and that's been the fact for the last 9 years. Yes Antonio has been going there since kindergarten. Last year they stopped paying it and kept putting it off without my knowledge probably cause they didn't want to bother me with it or for whatever reason. The last pastor worked with my parents to keep him in school last year but as every month went by I Antonio's legal father was not notified until a few months ago. Not by certified letter or a meeting or even by pulling me aside at any morning I drop him off! But my notification was a phone call telling me to come pick up my son we can no longer provide services to him. I explained my side of the story and asked why I was never notified of this a year ago and that I'll be taking over all payments if my parents aren't paying it anymore cause I need to keep in school. I explained I can afford tuition but all the past due I'm going to have to wait until my clients pay me to pay it off. I made payments the last few months as much as I could and told them I'm still waiting on a few big checks from insurance jobs I've finished. On Tuesday I had a meeting with The Father and Principal to arrange a payment schedule to keep him in school after them pulling him out of class for the third time. I offered to pay off last years balance that day and pay regular tuition rates every month until my checks come in and then I'll pay the balance in full. After a short talk amongst themselves My offer was refused and they told me Antonio is no longer able to attend Santa Clara Elementary School. Let me do some math now, about 400 a month for the last 9 years minus the months off for break plus fee's comes to somewhere around $36,000+ Santa Clara Elementary has made off us. Now at the last four months before Antonio graduates from 8th grade they decide to kick him out? Wow, Just Wow....I'm still processing it all and trying to look at the good from this situation, like I said, I'm trying...My Money is good, I just don't get paid like a normal job, most of my clients are on a billing system and insurance jobs take even longer to pay....I don't know, I'm just real disappointed by this whole thing...But I'm not the real loser in this whole matter, Antonio my son is....if this is the way the Church shows compassion and how they reward loyalty then I rather stay away... read more

I sure do hope the photographer from the wedding has not been photographing at this church anymore seeing how he can be so disrespectful and feel the need to completely ignore what this priest is trying to explain to you. First of all, perhaps you do not understand that people who take communion are receiving Jesus Christ himself. Canon Law does explain the need for all those to take part in a Eucharistic Celebration to have sufficient knowledge and careful preparation so that they understand the mystery of Christ according to their capacity and are able to receive the body of Christ with faith and devotion (Can. 913 1). Canon Law also clearly states, "A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to celebrate Mass or receive the body of the Lord without previous sacramental confession," (Can. 916). With grave sins being defined as those which destroy charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God's law; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate end and his beatitude, by preferring an inferior good to him. Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young man: "Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and your mother" (CCC 1852-1864). Now, policies, rules, and guidelines for wedding photographers and videographers vary from place to place and priest to priest, but the basic principle that should be kept in mind is that a Catholic wedding is first and foremost a liturgy--that is, the public prayer of the whole Church, not just a private ceremony for those present. People videotaping or photographing the wedding should strive to respect the sacred nature of the liturgy. This means not positioning cameras where they might interfere with or distract from the liturgy. Your parish will be able to tell you where photographers and videographers are permitted; however, generally, the area immediately around the altar (the sanctuary) is off-limits. The center aisle or other locations that might block the view of the assembly are also likely to be discouraged. Other restrictions on photographers and videographers might include wiring the bride and groom for sound, using flash photography or artificial lighting during the ceremony, moving around during key moments of the liturgy, moving furnishings or decorations. Perhaps you and the couples should consider speaking with the priest celebrating the wedding prior to the liturgy to make arrangements. As far as the funeral goes, yet another reference to Canon Law, "a person who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from any food and drink, except for only water and medicine," (Can. 919 1). Regardless of whether it was a funeral or a wedding, if one does not feel these "rules" are right, they should consider educating themselves perhaps through a parish bible study or RCIA program. Otherwise, continue to live their non-practicing ways BUT be aware of the consequences and be able to live with them. There is absolutely no need for anyone to feel sorry for you and you do not need to act as a victim simply because you choose to not live your life as a faithful Christian. Although Msgr. Jon usually celebrates the mass I attend and being that I have not been to many of Father Lucio's masses, I believe he is doing the right thing and preaches in the name of the Lord. This review is for everyone involved in the wedding process. Wedding coordinator very unprofessional. Did not return my emails in a timely manner. Set up all the appts I needed at the last moment,1mth before my wedding. After several calls and emails regarding our assessment test, she still didnt schedule a meeting with father Marcos to go over it. Complained to Father Marcos and he didnt do anything about it. Kept on telling me about the bridesmaids dresses and how they cant be sleeveless but yet when I "crashed" other wedding ceremonies the bridesmaid dresses for these weddings were sleeveless. He had the nerve to tell me something on my wedding day, which made me upset...who does that. The way they do everything for weddings is just wrong, such a hassle, nothing but headaches, and they just made me upset so much. Yes it is a nice church but if I could redo it over I would at another church. read more

Most of the references that I am reading concerning Father Lucio must be from non-Catholics. It's a sad state of affairs that the priest actually has to remind some "Catholics" that in order to take communion you must be free of mortal sin. Beautiful Church, great gothic architecture, awesome stained glass windows. You can really pray there, light a candle and bring flowers to Mary, or just site there in silence enjoying God's presence. The two priests there do so much for such a large parish! I am sorry to learn that some people have had a bad experience. I hope you can forgive. Jesus says to pray for those who hurt you. In my experience, Father Marco, the Pastor, is very open to hearing suggestions for improvements that are truly needed. I would suggest writing to him or meeting with him in person. He is a wonderful human being. The office staff always have a smile and have been very helpful every time I needed services. The $10 donation for Mass intentions is pretty standard in most local churches. If someone truly is not able to afford that, I think they could ask that it be waived. Santa Clara has been my parish for a long time. It is getting younger and better and there are wonderful changes in the works. Just visit. It's God's house.
